HD01 - Engineering Cadet Callan Campbell - Maddie Allen - 12-15-2024

== Welcome to your holodeck Cadet Campbell

Read the following information carefully, because it has a fair amount of important information for you.  If you have any questions or difficulties at any time, please contact one of the following people for assistance.  We’d be glad to help you out.

Commander Jasal
Commander Shanth
Captain Allen

Remember during your time at Academy people have responsibilities such as school, jobs, and family, as well as maintaining our site. There are times when we may have to wait longer than we’d like for a reply to a post or a question. Patience and treating each other with respect and dignity are two things that are absolutely required of all members.

On the flip side, the Constitution states that players need to post at least twice a week.  If you find you are unable to keep up due to something coming up in real life responsibilities or you’re just going to be on holiday, please let one of the Admins know.  You can be granted a leave of absence for the length of time you think you’ll be away.  If you don’t let us know and you suddenly disappear, this could end up with you being considered AWOL and eventually removed from the active cadet roster.

Now… with all of that said, let’s get to your character’s bio!

Please begin by posting your bio using the template below. Once posted, your bio will be reviewed by an Evaluations representative. They will post comments for you and suggest any adjustments your bio might require.  Once they approve your bio, you will be assigned an instructor and your adventure will begin!

Federation Space is a written RPG. With that said, we ask that you try to pay attention to spelling and grammar in your posts.  Posts properly formatted are easier and more enjoyable for everyone to read. I strongly recommend you run your bio and any posts you make through a spell check before posting them.

Next are a few resources that can help you as you write your bio:

Be sure to check out playable races.

Our character development page is a great resource to help you fill out your bio form.

Along with character development is information about the Star Fleet Academy Curriculum, including Majors and Minors.

One last thing, please take time to read and understand our site’s canon page.  This will help you understand what 'Trek' related information is included on our site.

Again, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!  And as always - have fun!

Personal History: Cal was born on Earth, in San Francisco, but only spent the first seven years of his life there. His mother was born and grew up there, and eventually stationed there as an instructor at Starfleet Academy, while Callan’s father served as an engineer on a starship.

Whenever his father was on Shore Leave they would spend time as a family on outings, or he would help his father tinker with various projects such as fixing up hovercars or gravcycles. He learned a lot about engineering from his father, or as much as a six year old could take in.

Just weeks after Cal’s seventh birthday his parents were tragically killed in a shuttle accident. He didn’t hear until years later that his father had been blamed for the accident as he had been the engineer working on that vehicle. Callan didn’t believe this. His father had served as engineer through the Dominion War and Borg incursion onward, had been given medals for his service, he wouldn’t have made such a mistake that caused the shuttle accident. It must have been just that, an accident. Upon his parent’s deaths, his only living relatives were his paternal grandparents, and he went to live with them in Scotland.

Life in Scotland was very different for him. His grandparents home was in a somewhat remote area, and Cal found it difficult to make new friends at school, so while he missed the hustle and bustle of life in a big city, he found he grew to enjoy the space of Scotland. His grandparents allowed him a lot of freedom and when not studying at school or from home, he roamed the surrounding countryside. The hills and lochs and mountains were his playground. His grandfather encouraged this and often took him further afield, hiking in the mountains, and at the young age of nine Cal completed reaching the summits of all 282 Munro mountains (peaks at least 3,000 metres above sea level). He still had memories of his time with his father, and kept the tinkering with gravcycles whenever the weather was too bad to go out wandering. As he got older he used the gravcycles to get him to the further mountains, leaving the vehicle at the base while he climbed to the summit, finding the gravcycle still where he’d left it when he descended.

For a career, his grandparents wanted him to become a chef and run some swanky restaurant in Edinburgh, and he underwent some of the training for this, but in his heart he knew he wanted something else. He had continued with his hiking and mountain climbing into his teens, and at 18 he went backpacking around Europe and South America with his best friend Rosie Adair. He had known her since starting school in Scotland as her family lived on the next croft to his grandparents. He loved to go to new places, to explore, and the prospect of staying in one place, running a restaurant of all things, for the rest of his life just didn’t appeal. He always wanted to reach the next peak, to explore further. He often thought about his parents' lives in Starfleet, and the places that they must have gone to and things they had seen. It was an awkward day when he had to sit down with his grandparents and tell them that he was applying to join Starfleet. He wanted to go further than backpacking around Earth, he wanted to roam the stars, he wanted to learn more about the lifestyle that his parents led, go to the places that they had gone, then go further, much further. His grandfather was against this, still blaming the allure of space exploration for losing his son in that shuttle accident. But, with some coaxing from Callan’s grandmother, he said that he wouldn’t stand in his way.

At the Academy Callan unsurprisingly found that the Engineering department was the best fit for him, following in his father’s footsteps. Rosie also joined up, but dropped out of the Academy in the second year. She returned to Scotland where her family had moved to live in Edinburgh.

Shortly before Graduation his grandmother called to say that his grandfather had died of a heart attack. He was devastated, and worried for his grandmother. How could she cope alone? Rosie kindly offered to let his grandmother move in with her in Edinburgh. Moving to the city was a big change for Callan’s grandmother but she seemed to be adapting well and keeping busy. Callen promised to visit as often as he could, but would call via subspace every week.

Having finished his studies, Callan’s excitement mounted as he awaited his first assignment in Starfleet…

== Personality ==
Academy Majors: Engineering
Academy Minors: Warp theory, holography
Hobbies & Past-Times: Likes outdoors, hiking, camping, mountaineering, sailing, cooking, reading about these subjects on other worlds
Short-Term Goals: To become a good team member on board a starship. To start exploring uncharted planets.
Long-Term Goals: To win the Charles Stark Draper Prize for Engineering
Personality: Easy going, altruistic, always eager to help
Sense of Humor: Witty observational humour
Phobias: Deep sea creatures. Along with a fear of deep water he had a phobia of the weird creatures that survive and thrive down there.
Likes: Seeing new landscapes and places
Dislikes: Card games, chess
Pet Peeves/Gripes: People not returning tools to where they got them from
Bad Habits / Vices: Snacking
Achievements: Climbed all 282 Munro mountains in Scotland by the age of 9
Disappointments: Disappointed that his best friend dropped out of the Academy so didn’t join him on a starship. They’d talked about it all the time in their first two years of study, then she dropped grades and quit.
Illnesses: Various climbing and hiking injuries e.g. broken ankle and collar bone, but no major viruses etc
Strengths: Mental endurance and psychomotor speed and accuracy skills built up through climbing.
Weaknesses: Sometimes lacks the confidence to lead a team, which he knows he will have to overcome if he’s to rise in the ranks of Starfleet.
Fears: Being deep underwater. Heights he was fine with, one could still breathe at the top of a mountain even if the air was a little thin, but deep water… but strangely he wasn’t afraid of the lack of air in space, it was the water…
Prejudices: None, and he hoped to keep it that way.

== Questions ==
Most Painful Experience: Learning of the deaths of his parents and grandfather. Losing his closest family and role models was harder than anything else he had encountered in life, bringing grief and self doubt that he could go on without them. Now he has to find a way to put a brave face on his true emotions for the sake of his grandmother, and for his career.
Best Time: Callan really enjoyed his time at Starfleet Academy, after a lot of apprehension. He had expected to hate crowds and noise compared to the Highlands he was used to, but once acclimated he really enjoyed the experience.
Most Crucial Experience: The day after learning of his grandfather’s death, he pushed himself by acting as the experienced climber helping someone reach the summit of the Inaccessible Pinnacle, second highest peak in the Skye Cuillin and rising from Sgùrr Dearg munro mountain. Considered to be the hardest Munro as it required rock-climbing and abseiling, it could only be done by a novice with the help of an experienced climber. Until that day Callan had been the novice, once he returned to the base camp he realised that he had the inner strength to not only do the climb but to help someone else achieve their ambition. He learned that he could push his limits to be strong and help others. He felt that his grandfather would be proud, and maybe if he pushed himself in Starfleet then his father might be proud as well.
Role Model: Father for serving in Starfleet and helping people, Grandfather for teaching him how to be strong and independent, yet be a good member of family and community.

RE: HD01 - Engineering Cadet Callan Campbell - Carrs Jasal - 12-15-2024

==An excellent bio, Cadet! My only concern is the concept of doing all of the Munro mountains by age nine, as it takes (on average) twenty-odd years. That said, your bio is approved. As you are a returning member, I will now administer the opt-out exam:

1. What is contained in a Standard Medkit?

2. What could be the possible effects of Dark Matter on normal space?

3. Where can you find important news for all site members?

4. Who, besides the Captain, can give direction in a plotline or subplot?

5. Who currently commands the USS Artemis?

6. What is the highest security rating in Starfleet?

7. What is the definition of a Type F plasma Torpedo?

8. List all player Starships currently used on Federation Space.

9. Describe the “Sulu Loop”

10. What class area will you find a chart of "Technobabble" terms?

11. Where are the rank abbreviations located?

12. In what way is a Binary Star a twin?

13. How many points do you need for promotion to Lieutenant?

14. What type of star is the Sun in the Sol System?

15. Write an example of your introductory post when reporting aboard your assigned ship. This post must contain all standard formatting. This is an exercise in creative writing and we need to see what your writing abilities are like. 3-4 line posts are not acceptable and will be considered failing. We are looking for 3-4 good length paragraphs.

Good Luck!==

RE: HD01 - Engineering Cadet Callan Campbell - Callan Campbell - 12-21-2024

== Sorry for the delay. Unexpected family visit as I’ll be working through Christmas, also brought me the Christmas gift of ‘influenza’. Both gone now ==

== Thank you, I'm glad you like the bio. The completion of all 282 Munro’s by age 9 is possible, I’ve met someone that did it. In 2012 Daniel Smith claimed the record with a few more 9 or 10 year old's since, and I figured in the time between then and the 25th century there will be a good number more. ‘Bagging’ them all by his mid 20’s wouldn’t have been as much of an achievement so I set it at age nine to show an accomplishment made with help of his grandfather and help illustrate the connection between them.  Shy ==

1. What is contained in a Standard Medkit?
> The standard medical kit contains a variety of equipment including:

A medical tricorder
Two hyposprays preloaded with up to six pharmaceuticals each.
A dermal regenerator
A tourniquet
Gauze
Other emergency equipment

2. What could be the possible effects of Dark Matter on normal space?
> Dark matter is currently believed to be a form of matter accounting for approximately 85% of the matter in the universe and about 27% of its total mass–energy density.

Primary evidence for dark matter comes from calculations showing that many galaxies would fly apart, or that they would not have formed or would not move as they do, if they did not contain a large amount of unseen matter.

3. Where can you find important news for all site members?
> Red Alert

4. Who, besides the Captain, can give direction in a plotline or subplot?
> The GM

5. Who currently commands the USS Artemis?
> Captain Tyra Crawford

6. What is the highest security rating in Starfleet?
> Rating 9. Ultra Secret.

7. What is the definition of a Type F plasma Torpedo?
> The least powerful plasma torpedo, the Type F still packs a pretty good punch. This variation of the Plasma requires roughly the same amount of energy to arm as the photon torpedo. However, it takes approximately 33% longer to arm this weapon. Like all plasma torpedoes, it begins losing warhead strength the instant it is launched. A full strength strike yields twice the power of a photon torpedo. All plasma torpedoes lose 5% of their warhead strength for every 10,000km travelled.

8. List all player Starships currently used on Federation Space.
> USS Artemis, USS Aquila, USS Titania, USS Yeager.

9. Describe the “Sulu Loop”
> Often referred to by pilots as "s-looping" or "slooping", the Sulu Loop is ideal for a ship quickly turning around and returning to the fight. The Sulu Loop involves banking the ship to one direction, before using attitude thrusters to rotate the ship 180° along its axis so ultimately it has changed its heading by 225°. Due to the stresses performed on the spaceframe during this maneuver, especially at greater velocities, it is not recommended to attempt this maneuver in anything larger than a Light Cruiser.

10. What class area will you find a chart of "Technobabble" terms?
> In the In Game Problem Solving section of the Academy Curriculum

11. Where are the rank abbreviations located?
> In Rank Explanations found in Rank and Positions of the Academy

12. In what way is a Binary Star a twin?
> A binary star system contains two stars orbiting around their common center.

13. How many points do you need for promotion to Lieutenant?
> 7,500 - 14,999 points are required

14. What type of star is the Sun in the Sol System?
> Sol is a Class G yellow star

== Stardate 202412.20 ==

Deep Space Nine had been a blast, really. After weeks of tedious travel all the way from Earth to reach the distant Bajor Sector, arriving on the highly cosmopolitan DS9 was like arriving at the best party you could be invited to. In the limited experience of Callan Campbell at least. He had enjoyed a week of entertainment in the famous Quark’s Bar and Grill and spent more than a few wistful moments thinking about his father walking these very deck plates back before Callan had even been born. He’d learned how to play dabo, very badly, and had almost been ripped off by one of those Ferengi bar staff plying some allegedly sought after souvenirs to send back to his grandmother and Rosie back in rainy Scotland. But the party was over, and instead, the adventure was about to begin…

Stepping out of the station’s archaic lift from upper pylon two, Callan set foot on board his first assignment since graduating from Starfleet Academy. He was to be one of the newest engineers on board the USS Yeager.

It was an exciting day. From the moment he stepped off the lift onto the deck plate of his new home on the USS Yeager, Midshipman Callan Campbell was living his dream.

First things first, he thought, I’d better drop my bags off in my quarters before finding where to report to.

Checking his padd for the umpteenth time, he saw that his quarters were to be found on deck four, in the primary hull, with other officer quarters. As a midshipman he was the lowest rank of officer, but enlisted crew were quartered in the lower decks of the secondary hull. Hmm…

“Computer. Show me the most direct route to deck ten, officer’s quarters.” he said aloud.

His request was answered by the omnipresent ship’s computer immediately.

[Current location deck eight, docking port. Please follow directional arrows on corridor panels.]

At this, a nearby display panel set into the wall changed the image displayed to show an arrow pointing along the corridor. This feature had been installed in Starfleet’s starships since the Galaxy Class but most people forgot it was even there. Callan thought it was a shame that these little details were swept aside. There were many seemingly redundant features known only to engineers these days. So, indulging the little detail, he followed the arrows that lit up to lead him to his destination.

His Quarters were larger than he was expecting, but still compact. It didn’t matter to him though as he expected to only be here briefly in between shifts to sleep and eat. The place he wanted to be most would be in the engineering department or just about anywhere on the ship, getting to know every ODN relay and isolinear chip as a good engineer should. He dropped his bags onto the floor and turned to leave. His next responsibility was to report in, so he headed for the Bridge. This time he didn’t ask the computer for directions as the turbolift wasn’t far from his room.

== Bridge ==

At the opening of the turbolift doors, Callan got his first view of the Bridge of the ship. He found his breath catch as his eyes cast around taking it all in. He noted the stations, the crew posted to them, and of course looked for the central chairs and whichever duty officer had the conn. Taking a deep breath again he stepped forward and approached the central chairs.

He waited patiently for the moment it took for his senior officer to look up from what they were doing, then spoke up.

“Midshipman Callan Campbell, reporting for duty, sir.”
