AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Daniel Brooks - 01-26-2025

==Other Science Labs located on Decks 8,10 and 11==

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - GM-07 - 08-12-2025

The lights of the science lab flickered slightly as power was rerouted to erect a level 10 forcefield around the primary testing station. Moments later, the shrill hum of an incoming transport signaled the arrival of a dilithium sample from the planet below. The pinkish crystal was streaked with veins of sickly green, which the computer identified as rianite — a highly volatile compound in its pure form, though relatively stable when bonded with dilithium.

The door to the science lab slid open. A silver-skinned Riani entered, escorted by a security crewman.

“Remarkable, simply remarkable!” The alien cooed, their telescopic eye implants stretching and contracting as they admired the lab’s various instruments. “My people are experts in cybernetics, but we’re clearly far behind the Federation in many other fields.”

The scientist settled their focus on the sample inside the forcefield, tapping their chin thoughtfully.

“This rianite junk is endemic to all dilithium on my planet. Trust me, plenty of nations would use it to build weapons if they understood its potency. Fortunately, my nation’s government has ensured that the capacity to process dilithium is highly restricted for the time being. Still, nothing stays secret forever. With the Federation’s technology, perhaps we can find a solution that will allow us to share our technology without arming our adversaries.”

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - GM-07 - 08-14-2025

The security crewman accompanying Luraim tapped their shoulder and muttered something urgent.

“The captain? Are you sure?” They asked, their face somehow whiter than usual. “Well, I suppose we shouldn’t keep him waiting. I’m sure he’s a busy man. I’ll come back as soon as I can.”

With that, Luraim and the crewman exited the lab in the direction of the Observation Lounge.

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Samira Khasim - 10-23-2025

>>>>Observation Lounge>>>>

[Khasim to Mister Slav, meet me in the science lab. Bring a container of duridium.]

Once Samira arrived with Luraim, she could see the sample was still there, contained in a forcefield. She was a little surprised at seeing rianite-affected dilithium, the pink clashing with the green; it was almost like looking at a "sick" rock.

"Okay, we have something that can help the rianite en route, one of my officers is bringing it now."

==Tag GM, I figured I could leave bringing the duridium to you, but if you'd like me to NPC Slav bringing it, I understand==

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - GM-07 - 10-25-2025

Luraim followed Khasim to the science lab, looking much more at home in this environment compared to the observation lounge. Their ocular implants were fixed on Khasim for the time being, temporarily resisting the urge to study every piece of equipment.

Moments later, the doors slid open once again to reveal Slav with an anti-grav sled in tow. “One duridium container, Lieutenant,” he announced. He stood by with a curious look in his eye, seemingly not bold enough to ask for an explanation.

Luraim, too, seemed anxious for an explanation. “Duridium, you said? This is the key to safely disposing of rianite? Is it rare?”

== For Khasim ==

Samira could think of a few solutions for bonding the rianite to dilithium, though most of them were better suited to a proper processing plant, rather than aboard a starship. One viable option would be to merge the patterns of both compounds using the ship’s transport buffer. The timing would need to be calibrated very precisely, though, or the results could be explosive.

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Samira Khasim - 11-04-2025

"Rare in a sort of way," Samira said, not saying everything while being honest. She pondered as she stared at the rianite. Within the past few hours, she had gone from thinking like a detective to thinking like a genuine scientist all the way to thinking like an engineer: She was given an impossible option, but she'll do it anyway.

Suffice to say, the options she figured to bond rianite to duridium would've been more ideal to perform at a processing plant than a starship, so they will just have to make do. And she had the one option.

"I might have a way to bond the two metals together, and to do it without having to use a processing machine...a transporter." She looked at Luraim and shrugged. "It's an insane option, but at the moment, it's the best one possible."

She then tapped her comm badge and said, [Transporter Room, this is Lieutenant Khasim. I need you to lock on to two compounds here in the lab and merge the patterns of them into the transporter buffer. Activate upon my signal.]

She felt she had to time it correctly. Otherwise, things would get messy. "Doctor? Mister Slav? Best that you get close to the door. If this goes wrong, we'll have seconds to get out and erect a force field around the lab."

Checking to see if the transporter room was standing by, Samira counted seconds in her head, then said, "NOW!"

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Beno Velaul - 11-07-2025

<<<<<Ready Room <<<<<<

Beno didn't waste any time getting there, she was relieved in a small way that the Observation Lounge was empty. 8t would make things less awkward when the President arrived, Beno wasn't sure about howshe would react when she received the news. Beno walked in still looking like she was going to a Business meeting, skirt was above the knee and heels. Eventually she would change but not at that time, there was a lot to do still. Two of the people there she did recognize while the third she didn't. It made recognizing their guest easier, then again he would stand out anywhere on the ship.

Beno stood close to the door but out of the door way, she didn't say anything at all at this time. She would wait for someone to recognize that she was there, chances were good that their guest would notice first but not have a clue about who she was.

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - GM-07 - 11-09-2025

The transporter sequence took much longer than usual. Multiple safety overrides were necessary to isolate the hazardous material. After a few false starts, the familiar sound of matter rematerialization filled the science lab. Where once stood a single dilithium crystal streaked with sickly green rianite, now there was a chunk of pure dilithium and a grey cylinder of rianite-infused duridium. A couple of stray pieces of rianite failed to bond with the duridium and exploded upon materialization. The science lab shook, but the force field held. Luraim watched the process intently, trying to memorize everything.

The scientist jumped as Velaul entered.

“Oh! Hello there,” they said, looking guilty. “I hope you’re not here to send me back to Riani. We’re making so much progress here.”

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Beno Velaul - 11-09-2025

While watching the transformation happen Beno almost forgotten why she was there, the small explosion reminded her of the reason. This was the thing that was going to enhance peace talks, or out right kill it. She wasn't sure how this was going to go, but Daniel believed in the plan and she believed in him.

“Oh! Hello there,” they said, looking guilty. “I hope you’re not here to send me back to Riani. We’re making so much progress here.” For a brief second Beno just looked at him without a word.

"If I was here to send you home, I wouldn't be here alone. However my Captain believes this can work and I believe in him." Looking at what happened in that room, she wasn't sure if they could replicate the same kind of environment, if the same thing happened down there how many people would get hurt?

"Something you should know is we are expecting Presidential company soon, I am just not sure when she is going to be here. What we need is some kind of plan that can safely do on your planet, or this doesn't have a shot at success." If this had a chance they would have to be able to be done by everyone, all without giving them advanced technology that would outright violate the Prime Directive.

"Khasim I am sure there is a better way of doing this, we just need to find it." Beno had no intention of taking over the experiment, she had a lot on the go as is.

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Kalli Thorn - 11-11-2025

== Posted with guidance from the GM... ==

The door to the lab swished open and Lt Thorn strode in, looking around anxiously, "What in the bloody..." Her nearly shouted words stopped dead as her eyes fell upon the FO, her tone dropping instantly, "Oh, sorry. No offense, sir, but I get a bit out of sorts when I register unexpected explosions on the ship."

Her attention returned to looking around and quickly focused on the containment field. Having grabbed a tool belt that was set up for damage control, it was draped over her shoulder and she put it on, then removed the scanner from it to point at what was inside the field. "Hmmm...interesting...well, that explains quite a bit."

Thorn was speaking to Khasim, but then finally noticed the tall visitor in the lab and did a double-take before glancing to the FO, but not saying anything about it. Finally she spoke once more, "I'm presuming this came from the surface. That contained material matches a substance I noticed in our detailed scans. Lieutenant Khasim, you appear to have succeeded in removing the impurities, but it was only a partial success. It reformed the sample without the impurities, leaving gaps in the structure where the impurities have been removed. It's entirely understandable, as it literally did what you told it to do."

She lowered the scanner and gave a sigh as she stared at the now pure but flawed sample. After only a few seconds of concentration, she turned to Khasim and said, "What we need to do is to scan in a sample that is already refined and configured for use. When you run the new process, it will still need to place the components in the buffer as before, but then it will need to superimpose the restructuring process with the prescanned matrix. In this way, it will turn the one sample into the other, leaving the remainder as secondary structures to be contained. The forming of new crystalline structure is going to need something though, as dilithium is hard to make it form or reform propper crystals for use in anti-matter reactions. You should flood the containment area with ionized radiation, like that from nuclear fission. That should help. Use a four times oversampling to ensure that there are no flaws in the assembly process as well. I think your duridium did the trick, but you just didn't have quite enough in the process and it allowed for a tiny amount of this unstable contaminant to be reformed in a free state. Be sure to have more of it than you need, so you end up with excess when you're done. You'll also want to be sure you have more dilithium than it will take for the end product. You can write it into the program that it will not execute the formation sequence until the minimum quantities and ratios are met in the processing, but that should be simple enough."

Kalli then gave a mock stern look at Samira that was punctuated with a hint of a grin, "Next time you plan to play with things that have a potential of blowing up part of the ship, Engineering would appreciate it greatly if you would be so kind as to inform us in advance. I'm glad to see that nobody was injured in this, as it appears that you had the foresight to use a containment field that was more than adequate to the task."

Finally glancing back to the FO, Kalli commented, "By the way, nice outfit..."

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Samira Khasim - 11-11-2025

Samira didn't blame Luraim for jumping, the concentration they had, she was equally surprised by Commander Velaul's appearance, but she kept concentration on the rocks assembled. She could see how the transporter particles were sluggish to assemble...

She hadn't forgotten how much false starts there were, how difficult it was to get the separated materials together. It was successful, but it seemed to Samira it was a difficult process...

"Well, I can say it works," Samira said, "but restoring the crystal structure had been difficult. You're right, Commander, we do need a better way to do this, we could burn out the transporter to do it...or worse...and that's me thinking more like a forensics investigator than an engineer..."

Samira was quite relieved when Kalli Thorn had entered, someone who was a real engineer. After hearing her out, Samira nodded, chuckling in agreement. "I can definitely do that, Lieutenant," she said. "In all fairness, I tend to think better as a forensics investigator than an engineer, and here I was trying to apply my forensic principles in an engineering way..."

She recalled the mention of ionization and nodded. "Sounds like a better idea. Let's see about bombarding samples from the planet with ionizing radiation. Proceed with flooding the containment area," Samira ordered. "And we'll need to proceed quickly if officials are coming aboard soon," she added, looking at Commander Velaul before she called in to the transporter room.

[Transporter Room, it's good work. But it made it struggle somewhat...we're going to try something new. Once you get another sample aboard, we'll bombard it with ionizing radiation and we'll see if that'll help. Proceed to energize on my mark, then I'll signal you again when to send the sample to the buffer again.]

She knew what had to be done before getting a new sample. So she set to scanning the refined sample, so as to determine the refined sample, as a guarantee to show the computer and the transporter systems what the rocks need to become, rather than having to duplicate the original unrefined sample.

==GM Input - per the new ideas, will the ionizing work better?==

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Beno Velaul - 11-12-2025

Beno nodded as Thorn entered the room, her anger was justified with Khasim. She should have had some kind of arrangement in place, Engineering could have had better safety protocols in place. Fortunately the protocols were in place that were more than adequate, but if they had a bigger sample it might not be. Hearing the compliment from Thorn made Beno smile. "Thank you, it feels nice to get out of the Uniform from time to time even for a short while."

There was a lot of information that was being thrown out there, and it all made sense. What they needed was something they could build on, the pure sample would give them what they needed. What they didn't need was too many samples being beamed up at any given time, the more they did it the higher the risk.

"Right now that is the last sample that gets beamed up to the ship, your new friend that I have never met can explain to you what risk this carries. The more samples that get beamed up the higher the risk someone notices, if that happens it makes our task more difficult." Beno took a second to think about it further.

"When I was Chief of Science there was always a co ordinated plan with the Engineering department, for the safety of the Ship and crew. Right now the consequences are even higher than that, we can't afford any mistakes. What I need from the both of you is a detailed report about the refining process, how it starts to how it ends. I also need a report on the risks of what is being done, and safety procedures to keep people from blowing up. The last thing anyone needs is someone's death on their conscience,  once that happens its hard to get over believe me I still haven't." Beno was about to leave for her quarters, but stopped for one last comment.

"If we work together on this it can go a long way towards solidifying the peace process, or this whole thing can explode in all of our faces. We can all agree that is to be avoided, now its time for me to get changed back into uniform." Beno left it at that, she wanted this whole thing to work and this was the best chance for this to happen.

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - GM-07 - 11-17-2025

== For Khasim ==

Thorn’s advice seemed reasonable for maintaining the dilithium’s crystal structure while also removing the rianite deposits. This process would be quite energy intensive — almost eclipsing the potential gain of usable dilithium. Under current supply conditions, most major powers in the quadrant would opt for an easier source. For the Riani, though, this appeared to be their best and only option.

== For all ==

Luraim looked woozy as Velaul explained that the president would be joining them.

“President Khushku is coming here? You must realize that what I’m doing up here is treason. Everything related to this topic is highly confidential — only a handful of people on the entire planet know about the potential threat of rianite weapons. Please, I need to request asylum before she arrives.”

The scientist looked toward Khasim. Somehow, the lenses of their ocular implants seemed to widen with fear.

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Cologero Coppola - 11-17-2025

[Bridge to Science.. We registered a small explosion in your department. Just making sure that everyone is still alright.] There was some level of concern in his voice.

RE: AQ/D06 - Science Labs - Samira Khasim - 11-26-2025

"Most definitely," Samira said in agreement to Commander Velaul; she had to agree that too many samples and somebody will notice. "And again, my apologies for not coordinating with Engineering..."

She stirred in realization and at Luraim's reaction. "Shit, their president is going to be here?" She looked at Luraim. "Well, the less people who'd know you're here, the better. You can stay here for the present, but if it looks like she's going to come here, we'll transport you to one of my quarters...hell, maybe my quarters. Nobody would expect a visitor in quarters not guest, much less VIP, quarters."

She gave a reassuring look to Luraim and then set up a PADD, set to keep an eye out for any Riani bio-signatures that'll come to their section. She also added: [Computer, prime for site-to-site transport on Doctor Luraim from this present lab to my quarters. Initiate if Riani bio-signatures besides Doctor Luraim approaches within a dozen meters of this lab.]

Looking at Velaul and Thorn, she said, "Well, if it's all right for the precautions, of course. Now, let's do this. Let's get this sample up and get the ionizing going."
