HD02 - Medical Cadet Tyris-McEntyre - Carrs Jasal - 05-17-2025

== Welcome to your holodeck Cadet Tyris-McEntyre

Read the following information carefully, because it has a fair amount of important information for you.  If you have any questions or difficulties at any time, please contact one of the following people for assistance.  We’d be glad to help you out.

Commander Jasal
Commander Shanth
Captain Allen

Remember during your time at Academy people have responsibilities such as school, jobs, and family, as well as maintaining our site. There are times when we may have to wait longer than we’d like for a reply to a post or a question. Patience and treating each other with respect and dignity are two things that are absolutely required of all members.

On the flip side, the Constitution states that players need to post at least twice a week.  If you find you are unable to keep up due to something coming up in real life responsibilities or you’re just going to be on holiday, please let one of the Admins know.  You can be granted a leave of absence for the length of time you think you’ll be away.  If you don’t let us know and you suddenly disappear, this could end up with you being considered AWOL and eventually removed from the active cadet roster.

Now… with all of that said, let’s get to your character’s bio!

Please begin by posting your bio using the template below. Once posted, your bio will be reviewed by an Evaluations representative. They will post comments for you and suggest any adjustments your bio might require.  Once they approve your bio, you will be assigned an instructor and your adventure will begin!

Federation Space is a written RPG. With that said, we ask that you try to pay attention to spelling and grammar in your posts.  Posts properly formatted are easier and more enjoyable for everyone to read. I strongly recommend you run your bio and any posts you make through a spell check before posting them.

Next are a few resources that can help you as you write your bio:

Be sure to check out playable races.

Our character development page is a great resource to help you fill out your bio form.

One last thing, please take time to read and understand our site’s canon page.  This will help you understand what 'Trek' related information is included on our site.

Again, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!  And as always - have fun!

Best Friend: Christian Johansen, dorm neighbor from Starfleet Academy
Personal History:

Emery is the sole child of Rear Admiral Elias McEntyre and his husband, Captain Dr. Gil’an Tyris. He was born by surrogate at the Methodist Medical Assisted Reproduction Center, in Mansfield, Texas on the 23rd of October. Emery’s family has been Starfleet officers since before the Federation was founded, going back to the Earth-Romulan War. Growing up, Emery spent most of his life aboard starships with his father. Emery was just four years old when he joined his father as he took command of the U.S.S. Guinevere. As a child, Emery absorbed everything around him and took advantage of every opportunity to learn from the ship’s crew and see new worlds.

When Emery was only 8, he experienced his first real traumatic event when he was kidnapped and held for ransom, not knowing if he would ever see his family again. Emery was taken from the Guinivere while the ship was exploring the Triangulum Galaxy. A hostile Triangulum race known as the Zandaryi were able to penetrate the ship’s defense systems and took Emery, the commanding officer’s child, as a negotiation tactic against the small Starfleet Contingent. Emery was held for several months in a jail on Zandaryi Prime beneath the palace of the Zandaryi Royal Kingdoms. It took the combined efforts of several Starfleet vessels and a detachment of Federation Marines to recover him. During those months in captivity, he was displayed as a war trophy and paraded through the capital city. It left him with scars, physical and emotional which still causes recurring nightmares to this day. He continues to receive therapy to this day to process these nightmares along with feelings of hatred toward the Zandaryi people.

Despite this traumatic experience Emery maintained his hope for the future. He continued to have a zeal for exploration. He knew that he still wanted to join Starfleet, despite the risks. It was time spent with a family member, an uncle to him, Dr. J.R. McEntyre turned Emery’s interests toward the medical profession. Emery was inspired to become a healer, and J.R. gave him the confidence that Emery also could pursue a career in medicine. As Emery prepared for entry into Starfleet medical, J.R. helped prepare him for his entrance exams and supported him throughout the process.

When Emery first started the Academy it was an adjustment to be surrounded by peers at first. As an only child, Emery had spent much of his childhood around adults, and when there were others his age there were usually just one or two others. Thankfully there was another cadet living on the same floor at the Academy with similar interests. They had many of the same classes, since they were both premed. Christian Johansen quickly became a close friend and confidante, and helped widen Emery’s social circle quite a bit in his first few years. Emery learned that while he can tend to be an introvert, he actually really enjoyed the company of his peers and would make a point to socialize somewhat regularly.

== Personality ==
Academy Majors: Medicine
Academy Minors: General Surgery, Biomedical Technologies
Hobbies & Past-Times: An academic at heart, yet the body of a gym rat, Emery spends equal time in the library and the gym. Due to the McEntyre line disposition of large Caitians, it takes effort to maintain their bodies.

Short-Term Goals: Growing as a doctor. Inspired by his uncle and the medical officers that came before him, Emery strives to do his best at whatever he puts his mind to.

Long-Term Goals: Emery’s hope is to be a Ship’s Surgeon, and run his own medical department or Starbase Hospital focusing on advancing the frontiers of medicine across the new frontiers of the 25th century.

Personality: Emery is a focused and driven person, and when he sets himself to a task he tends to be single minded. Emery’s focus on goals can sometimes be to his own detriment. He will forego sleep, and sometimes food when he is spending hours in the lab.

However, Emery strives to put people first, as he is very sensitive to feeling left out. When someone stops by, even if he is in the middle of a project he will make time for them. Emery likes to accept invitations to social engagements, and enjoys networking events. However, he can be somewhat of an introvert, and requires some time to himself to recharge.

Sense of Humor: A weakness of Emery is not understanding much humor. While he enjoys humor, most of the time the minute concepts elude him.

Phobias: Spiders, Snakes, Poisonous Animals.

Likes: Reading. He enjoys classic novels, westerns, histories of the great eras of Starfleet. His most treasured possession is a copy of “In the Raptor’s Claw” to which he has a signed copy. He also enjoys exercising his mind and body.

Dislikes: Cold weather, being from Texas and growing up on Starships with artificially controlled climates, he’s not used to extreme cold. Getting Wet. Not that he doesn’t enjoy swimming, it’s mainly the aftermath of drying all of his fur afterwards.

Pet Peeves/Gripes: Being talked over, feeling ignored or invisible.

Bad Habits / Vices: Emery tends to be blunt. Much like his father Gil, he’s honest to a fault and sometimes is not the most tactful, but is working on it. His coffee habit has become a concern of his fathers.

Achievements: Graduating from Starfleet Medical in the top 10% of his class

Disappointments: Feeling left out generally. As an only child, Emery struggled to learn how to make friends in new places.

Strengths: Honesty, Sincerity, Driven, Booksmart with medical knowledge

Weaknesses: Being too blunt. Emery tends to be just as blunt and honest as possible though he is making the effort to learn and grow his bedside manner, it has been compared to the early days of Leonard McCoy in terms of how he projects himself.

Fears: Failure primarily. Emery fears the thought of bringing dishonor to his family’s name and legacy as one of the founding families of Starfleet.

Prejudices: Emery does not harbor many prejudices. Growing up in an inclusive family and being a proud gay man himself, he is repulsed at the idea of ever excluding or in any way harboring prejudice against others. Emery has been noted as being open to others and new ideas. However, when encountering hostile races, Emery maintain suspicions and still holds a grudge against the Zandaryi.

== Questions ==
Most Painful Experience: Being taken hostage by an alien species when he was a child.

Best Time: The summers spent on Deep Space 12 with his “Uncle” J.R at the Starbase hospital learning about the medical field first hand as an intern.

Most Crucial Experience: His time spent as a hostage of the Zandaryi Kingdoms haunts the young man to this day. Content recurrent nightmares still plague him even after almost 15 years.

Role Model: His Uncle and those medical officers who came before him gave the Caitian many to look up to, and the Dogtags of his ancestor Josiah McEntyre is with him wherever Emery goes, hanging from his neck as a reminder of duty.

RE: HD02 - Medical Cadet Tyris-McEntyre - Carrs Jasal - 05-17-2025

==Good Afternoon, Cadet! I am Commander Carrs (yep, me again!) and I will be assisting in the development of your bio.

Overall, it's a solid start! Though there are some items we need to address before we continue:

1) Which parent contributed the Caitian DNA? There is no mention of any Caitian heritage in the bio.
2) Triangulum Galaxy: On Federation Space, we're still very much exploring the Milky Way. We've expanded exploration into the Delta and Gamma Quadrants somewhat in the last decade, but nothing beyond that. That part of the bio will need to be altered to fit site canon.

Aside from that we're pretty much good to go! Please repost the bio with the changes/clarifications so I can look it over again in one document, and we'll move onto the next stage!==

RE: HD02 - Medical Cadet Tyris-McEntyre - Carrs Jasal - 05-18-2025

==Thank you for making those changes! Your bio is approved!

Now for the fun part! I don't get to do this often, but for players who are returning to the site or who have demonstrated their writing abilities elsewhere, we offer the "Opt-Out Test". This skips the Academy lessons we use to determine player skill level, ability to navigate the wiki, etc, and jumps you right to the end. As you meet these requirements, I will be administering this test for you.

It can be a little involved, so my recommendation is to save the test as a Word Document, work on it, and submit it in its entirety when complete.

Good luck!

EXAM BEGINS

This test will help you to learn the navigation of Federation Space, as well as test your ability to search for answers to common and not so common questions. Everything on this test can be found on the Federation Space wiki.

For the General Question part of the test (“who” and “what” questions), all you have to do is give the answer. For the Site Navigation portion of the test (“where” questions), you must give the answers as well as the page link where the answer can be found.

Lastly, there is a small essay section which you must complete before you graduate. In some ways, this is the most important part of the exam. You must demonstrate the ability to use what you have learned about our posting formats; third person past-tense perspective, italics for thought, bolding for emphasis, double spacing, proper spelling and grammar and open ended posting.

General Questions:

1. What is contained in a Standard Medkit?

2. What could be the possible effects of Dark Matter on normal space?

3. Where can you find important news for all site members?

4. Who, besides the Captain, can give direction in a plotline or subplot?

5. Who currently commands the USS Artemis?

6. What is the highest security rating in Starfleet?

7. What does Section 4.2. of the Federation Space Constitution cover?

8. List all player Starships currently used on Federation Space.

9. Describe the “Sulu Loop”

10. Where will you find Federation Space’s "Technobabble" list?

11. Where are the rank abbreviations located?

12. In what way is a Binary Star a twin?

13. How many points do you need for promotion to Lieutenant?

14. What type of star is the star in the Sol System?

15. Write an example of your introductory post when reporting aboard your assigned ship. This post must contain all standard formatting. This is an exercise in creative writing and we need to see what your writing abilities are like. 3-4 line posts are not acceptable and will be considered failing. We are looking for 3-4 good length paragraphs.==

—--------

The Shuttle ride had been long. Too long for newly appointed Midshipman Emery Tyris-McEntyre. Not that he was complaining, mind you. He was used to the long boredom of intersystem flights. Five hours on a small shuttle, especially for one of his broad stature could be challenging. He shifted in his seat, trying to get comfortable. After four long years of Starfleet Medical Academy, he had finally gotten his first duty assignment and a Starship, no less. If he was anyone else, this would be an exciting moment. First time on a starship could be overwhelming to some. For Emery, it was just another day. He’d grown up on starships. His fathers were both Starfleet. His Caitian father, an Admiral. His Betazed father, a Science Officer. It had surprised them both when Emery, all of 12, came up to them and told them he wanted to be a surgeon, like his Uncle J.R.

The shuttle banked, snapping Emery from his thoughts. He looked over to the window aside his seat, seeing the line of drydocks with various ships. The one he was heading for drew closer. A Steamrunner class starship. Small, nimble, agile starships. Small crews too. Something he could ease in too. He wasn't a fan of crowds, though, his roommate, Christian, had drawn him out some during their years at the Academy. Both of them got lucky, being on the Medical track together. They hit it off almost immediately, sharing stories and quickly falling into routines. He learned from Christian to socialize more, get to know his peers. It had been some fun. Now, the real work began. Duty was at Emery's forefront, something that his father, Elias, had instilled in him from as far as he could remember. Duty, Honor, the guiding principles of Starfleet.

“This is it. Remember what dad said, the first step of the journey is the hardest." Emery smiled to himself, it had been his first day at the Academy when his father, Elias, had told him that gem of wisdom. How right he had been.

The shuttle gracefully flew between the frames of the drydock, angling for the shuttlebay of the Steamruuner. He heard the static of the shuttle passing through the forcefield, slowing down and with a small thud, landed on the deck. He stood, picked up his duffel bag, and with a tug of his uniform tunic, stood before the ramp. A few moments later, it opened, thudding to the deck with a clunk. Emery took a deep breath in, and stepped aboard.

The shuttlebay manager, Emery saw, stood before the large double doors, checking in the new arrivals. Emery approached, setting down his duffel and snapped to attantion.

"Midshipman Emery Tyris-McEntyre, reporting for duty." He announced as he presented his PADD to the officer before him.

RE: HD02 - Medical Cadet Tyris-McEntyre - Carrs Jasal - 05-18-2025

==Congratulations, Cadet! You have demonstrated sufficient site navigation and posting skills to complete the Opt-Out exam. You are hereby promoted to the rank of Midshipman!

To prepare for your new assignment, go into your profile and change your rank image to Medical - Midshipman, and position to Medical Officer.

A member of the Administration and your new Command Team will be reaching out shortly to discuss your assignment.

Congratulations again, and welcome to Federation Space!==
