HD05 - Science Cadet Rismaeriiffa Qab'ataar - Amelina Whittaker - 04-12-2026

== Welcome to your holodeck, Cadet Qab'ataar

Read the following information carefully, because it has a fair amount of important information for you.  If you have any questions or difficulties at any time, please contact one of the following people for assistance.  We’d be glad to help you out.

Commander Jasal
Commander Shanth
Captain Allen

Remember, during your time at the Academy, people have responsibilities such as school, jobs, and family, as well as maintaining our site. There are times when we may have to wait longer than we’d like for a reply to a post or a question. Patience and treating each other with respect and dignity are two things that are absolutely required of all members.

On the flip side, the Constitution states that players need to post at least twice a week.  If you find you are unable to keep up due to something coming up in real-life responsibilities or you’re just going to be on holiday, please let one of the Admins know.  You can be granted a leave of absence for the length of time you think you’ll be away.  If you don’t let us know and you suddenly disappear, this could end with you being considered AWOL and eventually removed from the active cadet roster.

Now… with all of that said, let’s get to your character’s bio!

Please begin by posting your bio using the template below. Once posted, your bio will be reviewed by an Evaluations representative. They will post comments for you and suggest any adjustments your bio might require.  Once they approve your bio, you will be assigned an instructor and your adventure will begin!

Federation Space is a written RPG. With that said, we ask that you try to pay attention to spelling and grammar in your posts.  Posts properly formatted are easier and more enjoyable for everyone to read. I strongly recommend you run your bio and any posts you make through a spell check before posting them.

Next are a few resources that can help you as you write your bio:

Be sure to check out playable races.

Our character development page is a great resource to help you fill out your bio form.

One last thing, please take time to read and understand our site’s canon page.  This will help you understand what 'Trek' related information is included on our site.

Again, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!  And as always - have fun!

Pets: white ferret, "Squall"
Best Friend: T'rohhna, Vulcan classmate that encouraged him to dye his hair and paint his nails
Personal History:
- Childhood: born to an overall traditional Andorian family, they relocated when he was five years old to a joint scientific outpost with Vulcans. The outpost was an experiment, in and of itself, to see if the two groups of people could live and work in harmony, instead of keeping each other at proverbial swordpoint. It was not just to be a social experiment, but, a means for the two species to learn from each others' methods. Depending on whom you ask on each of the homeworlds, you might hear that it was a waste of time and resources, that it went well, or that it was a bit of a washout. The actual truth lies somewhere in the middle of that; for the most part, the initial years were rough as each group learned how to work with each other and not against each other. Tempers, yes, even amongst the Vulcans, occasionally flared. Thankfully, the delegation leaders chosen for the outpost wound up being the smartest choice of all, since they knew not only how to ease the concerns of their own contingent, but, how to communicate with their counterpart and form a partnership. Ris' parents were sent as research assistants (father) and reliable field worker for tests and samples (mother). It was during this time that Ris came to develop a fondness for teal - a color that blended the blue of Andorians and the green of Vulcans.
- Adolescence/education: Andorians pride themselves on their martial prowess, which is certainly well-earned. Ris struggled with reconciling that martial history with his passion for learning and science. As such, he initially hid his interests from people, even his parents, because they had lamented on occasion about their own lack of contributions in the military arena. When it came time to apply to the appropriate academy on Andoria, he knew that whatever he pursued he would likely be locked into for several years. Knowing he would be miserable if he didn't stay true to himself, he made it clear to his parents that he wanted to go into scientific pursuits. Their reaction was mixed - concern for how the Andorian society, as a whole, would view him, yet pride in his conviction and interest in a more intellectually honest path.
- Academy: his familiarity and comfort with Vulcans provided him with social opportunities at the Academy than he might otherwise have enjoyed. Although it took a little bit of time to dust off his rudimentary skill with the Vulcan language, his heartfelt intent carried through and eventually won over some of his classmates. Unfortunately, not all of his fellow Andorians understood; despite both planets having been founding members of the Federation and united under that banner for decades, there still remained some of the old friction and prejudices. Some of them either shunned him, or did their best to needle him with remarks intended to bruise his ego. Surprisingly, he was able to apply some of the tenets of logic to those situations, and kept his temper under control. It didn't hurt that he was aware that any sort of fighting amongst cadets was one of the quicker ways to get yourself marked down as a trouble case, and scrutinized for continued enrollment. It was during this time he met T'rohhna, who encouraged him to step outside his comfort zones when it came to self-expression. Both felt that there was chemistry between them, and discussed the possibility of becoming romantically involved; in the end, both felt that the timing wasn't right.

== Personality ==
Academy Majors: Science
Academy Minors: Physics (Electromagnetic radiation, thermodynamics)
Hobbies & Past-Times: oil paintings (abstract); listening to different cultures' analogues of fusion jazz
Short-Term Goals: Going on an away mission as a mission specialist; getting to study EM interactions, especially anomalies
Long-Term Goals: Away team lead; diplomatic aide
Personality: Gregarious, though in a muted way; they enjoy the company of people, but, are not typically the "loud" one; stoic, but not made of stone
Sense of Humor: Ris appreciates clever wordplay, and jokes that aren't just "low-hanging fruit"; there's a time and a place for said jokes, sure, but, not as a staple
Phobias: untreatable parasites, or irreversible conditions
Likes: music that taps into emotion more so than technique; any fiction media (print or visual) that rewards an intelligent viewer/reader, that doesn't spoon-feed the solution/answer
Dislikes: inane, "brain dead" social trends
Pet Peeves/Gripes: small talk in the sense of it just being used to fill time; pleasantries are good, the obligatory "social checklist" of conversations annoys him. A lot. In order for a conversation to be of interest to him, there has to be some intellectual or emotional investment within.
Bad Habits / Vices: when particularly nervous or unsure, he fiddles with the end of his pony tail, and/or cracks his neck
Achievements: helped pave the way for more joint Andorian/Vulcan social activities at the Academy
Disappointments: that his and T'rohhna's feelings for each other just aren't a realistic priority for each other at this stage of their lives
Illnesses: is actually allergic to Andorian ale
Strengths: can usually remain level-headed when others might allow their tempers to take over; despite his dislike of "small talk", he usually does well in making people feel welcome
Weaknesses: he's joked that he could burn ice cubes; while he's not that inept when cooking, he sticks to very basic, easy to follow recipes (the replicator is his friend)
Fears: being trapped in a hot, dry area with no means of saving himself
Prejudices: even if he logically understands the role counselors play, he's still uncomfortable around them, no matter what species they are

== Questions ==
Most Painful Experience: finding out that one of your favorite Vulcan mentors while at the outpost in your childhood was actually a Romulan spy sent to sabotage the effort
Best Time: getting to be a part of the cadet group assisting in the study of a new quasar, and studying its output in the EM spectrum
Most Crucial Experience: being able to connect some of the lessons (methods, techniques) he absorbed/learned as a child at the outpost with similar subjects he discussed with his Vulcan peers in the Academy; of primary importance was the lesson that you can always learn something from someone when it comes to science and research
Role Model: both of his parents, for being resilient in the face of difficult or challenging circumstances, and sharing with him not just their knowledge of science, but, their love for it.
Referrer / How you found Fed Space: I was talking with a friend who plays; he and I had both been part of the original group long ago, and I felt the interest to try again and dust off the creative cobwebs

== Congratulations Cadet, your bio has been approved and your Instructor will be starting your lessons shortly :-) ==

RE: HD05 - Science Cadet Rismaeriiffa Qab'ataar - Maddie Allen - 04-15-2026

== Hello Cadet Qab’ataar and welcome to Federation Space RPG, also known as Fed Space. I’m glad to have you here – Fed Space is a great game and fantastic community.  I’ll be your Academy Instructor, helping you get ready for your time on ship. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me here or email me.

Before we move onto the first lesson, I want to make sure you know about the great resource our wiki provides. It has a lot of information, including what your department duties will be. We also have an Academy and New Cadet FAQ among other things. Take some time to review as we’ll be using the wiki later in our lessons.
With that out of the way, let’s get started: Lesson one: Writing Format

Third Person, Past Tense:
Fed Space has players all over the world so we use a standardized set of formatting rules. By using one style, it makes it easier for everyone to follow and understand each other’s posts.

The first thing to know is that we post in third person, past tense.  An example of this style of writing would be: Samantha was so excited to be finally taking her final examination, she fell off her seat.  NOT: I fell off my seat because I was so excited to take my final examination.

We also use double spacing between paragraphs and character’s spoken lines. This means when you write a spoken line with quotation marks “ ”, leave a space after. This makes it easier for players to follow.  A good rule to follow is ‘When in doubt, double space.’

Your Character’s Internal Thoughts
To show your character’s own thoughts, we use italics.  When writing your character’s thoughts, it’s acceptable to write in first person.  An example of showing my character’s thoughts would look like: I can’t wait for another cup of chai. Maybe I should make it a dirty chai next time.

Showing Emphasis
To make something really stand out in your post, such as if your character was shouting, we use bold text. An example of showing emphasis for my character would look like: Maddie loved a good cup of chai, especially with a bit of vanilla and cinnamon.

Telepathic Communication
In general, it is rare a character has the ability to communicate telepathically and because of this, it is closely monitored by our Senior and Commanding Officers to make sure it isn’t abused.  With that said, there are a few telepathic races on Fed Space and on occasion telepaths will speak to each other through this unique skill. Telepathic communication is shown like this:

~ Hello, I am speaking directly into your mind. ~

If your character is not telepathic then, in general, you won’t need to worry about this technique, but I want you to be aware it exists in case you see crewmembers on your ship or others using it.

Using Communication Badges or Comm Badges
Characters can often receive verbal communications through a communication device, such as a comm badge, from another crew member or the computer.  When receiving a message, you should drop the quotations “ ” and instead use brackets [ ].

For example, if I received a message from another officer, it would look something like this:
[Commander Jasal to Captain Allen. We are out of chai.]

If you are the one speaking to somebody through a comm device, you would still use the quotations “ ”.

Out Of Character posting or OOC:
OOC posting is what I’m doing now. OOC text is surrounded by == ==.   Use OOC when you want to talk to another player and not write it as part of the storyline.  You won’t need to do this in general discussion areas such as your ship’s OOC sections like Crew Announcements as well as in Hailing Frequencies.

Proofing Posts:
When writing a post, it’s important to take time to run your posts through the spell check many writing software offers. Spell check won’t find all grammar and spelling errors, but will find many and help correct errors found. Rereading your post can help catch errors. We don’t need anyone to be a speller or grammar whiz, but taking the time to do this extra step will make it easier for everyone to understand what’s written.

A good way to get the feel of these formatting rules and to get a feel of the site in general is to browse the different ship forums. Take some time to look at the different ships. Take time to notice how our players use the elements listed above.

With all that said, let’s get to some posting!  Your first assignment is to respond to my post using the above formatting elements. If you have any questions, ask.  Good luck and have fun! ==

Maddie arrived to the next cadet’s holodeck well ahead of time, chai in one hand and PADD in the other. She had reviewed the cadet’s academy history and then began preparing for their last major assignment, their final examination. She loved her academy job and especially enjoyed observing a cadet’s exam. While she was always focused on encouraging cadets, supporting them through their years, she was also known to throw a wrench in as well, just to see what they might do.

As she waited for the cadet, she continued to finalize the exam, looking for just the right wrench.

That might do…

RE: HD05 - Science Cadet Rismaeriiffa Qab'ataar - Ris'maeriiffa Qab'ataar - 04-15-2026

[Cadet Qab'ataar, your instructor is ready for you in Holodeck 05. Please report there now.]

His antennae reflexively bent ever slightly inward when he received the message. He tapped his commbadge and replied, "Cadet Qab'ataar proceeding to Holodeck 05 as directed. ETA 5 minutes."

Satisfied he'd responded in proper Starfleet etiquette, he strode purposefully towards the assigned Holodeck. His thoughts and feelings vied for supremacy as he walked.

You know you are capable. You know your instructors had confidence in you, or they would never have advanced you onward. Remember the techniques T'rohhna and the other Vulcans instructed you in. Control and direct your feelings, not the other way around.

Squaring his shoulders, he pressed the door panel button, letting his instructor know he had arrived.

RE: HD05 - Science Cadet Rismaeriiffa Qab'ataar - Maddie Allen - 04-16-2026

== Cadet Qab'ataar, thank you for your entrance post! You did a great job using the formatting discussed!  It was great to read a bit about what you were feeling now. I think it’s time to move on to our next lesson. Remember, as we proceed through the lessons, keep using the formatting.

Lesson two: Plots, GM Input, Character Hijacking, and New Content:

We have two types of plots here on Federation Space: the main plot and subplots.
Main plots affect the entire ship and are directed by a Game Moderator (GM).
Subplots are an underlying story that’s being told within the main plot.  A subplot can be run by any player who has received approval by the ship’s CO (or FO).

An example of the difference between the two: The main plot is about the ship falling under attack, whereas a subplot would be a character dealing with an on-ship pregnancy or maybe trying to write the next great holonovel.

GMs:
Game Moderators (GMs) guide the ships’ missions along. Every ship has a mission, of which only the GMs of a ship know the mission details.

Your job is to write what your character sees and what their reaction is. The GM will provide any unknowns about the plot.  This input will have significance to the direction of the mission. This is why characters should keep posts open ended on anything that might affect the mission’s direction or outcome.   As your character performs an action, such as performing a diagnostic scan, leave the result of the scan unknown.  The GM will explain what the outcome of the action is.

When you need GM input on something, for example results of a diagnostic scan, one only has to make a request at the end of the post.  The request can look like:

== GM Input, please. ==

Or it can also be a more specific request, such as:

== GM Input:  Result of the diagnostic, please. ==

Take a look around at the active ships on Federation Space to see characters ask for GM input.

Character Hijacking:
The next element we’re going to cover is character usage. Unless you have permission from the player, you cannot post any speech, thoughts or movements for another character (PRC or NRC) that isn’t yours, unless the character has already done so in game. This is called character hijacking and is not permitted on Fed Space. Some players might not mind, but even minor things such as a nod of the head or a shrug of the shoulders can be considered hijacking.

For example, if you wrote in your next post that Captain Maddie Allen suddenly appeared and started dancing the Hokey Pokey, you would have hijacked another character.

Character Movement on Ships:
I’m sure you have noticed a ship has multiple threads on it for various locations that a player can post, such as the bridge, sickbay, and security offices.  Oftentimes while on a mission players travel throughout the ship to accomplish their orders. To help follow the plot when a player is transitioning from one thread to another, they should make a notation at the end their post like this:   >> Sickbay >>   The arrows and location found at the bottom of a post tells readers where this character will post next.

When the player makes their next post, the player should make a notation at the beginning of their post like this:   << Bridge <<     The arrows and location found at the top of a post indicate that is where a player has just come from.

Finding New Content:
I would like to mention the ‘view new content’ feature on the top right of our forum page.  This tab is a quick and handy way to see who has posted since your previous visit to Federation Space.

With all of that, I think it’s time for more writing!  In your next post, continue practicing your use of the formatting you learned in lesson one and ask for GM input. I will be acting as your GM.

If you need any help or would like more clarification on something, ask me! ==

The holodeck doors slid open and Maddie’s next exam was underway. “Cadet Qab’ataar,” she said, softly and welcoming. “Right on time. Good.”  She took a few steps toward him, not looming, just to meet him where he stood.

“I’ve been catching up, reading your Academy file. But files only tell me who you were before you stepped onto this deck. I’m want to know who you’re becoming.” Maddie gave a gentle smile. “Before we begin your examination, I want to hear something directly from you.” She paused. Then her voice because more serious for a moment as she asked, “Why did you choose science? I don’t want the Academy’s answer…Not something you’ve heard from instructors. I want your answer.”

Maddie listened to the cadet’s answer, giving him a positive nod. “Good. Thank you for your thoughtful answer.”  She tapped for a moment on her PADD as she continued. “I think it's a great day for a final exam. What do you say we get this formality done so you can move on to graduation?”

The grid dissolved into a compact research dome filled with soft green light, bioluminescent plants, and a gentle mist. A workstation blinked quietly and a habitat chamber hummed.

“This is the Eden‑3 Microbiome Pod. A stable, self‑contained ecosystem. It’s designed to be predictable.”

She gestured toward the habitat chamber as its lights flickered in an odd, uneven rhythm. There was one figure already inside, a young human ensign, who at the moment was frozen, waiting for the simulation to begin.

“Except today, it isn’t... Your task… Something in this biome has changed, and the system can’t identify the cause…”   Maddie paused a moment, giving the cadet a chance to survey what was in front of him. “Begin when ready, Cadet.”

RE: HD05 - Science Cadet Rismaeriiffa Qab'ataar - Ris'maeriiffa Qab'ataar - 04-16-2026

Ris absorbed what Captain Allen had imparted, then allowed his attention to broaden to include the simulated Microbiome Pod. His antennae flexed the way fingers might, briefly curling inward then relaxing.

Xenoflora definitely isn't my strong suit...but, Science is Science, as several instructors were fond of saying.

"Computer, begin program."

As the environment sprang to simulated life, Ris approached the Ensign.

"Ensign, I'm Cadet Qab'araar, what's the situation and what do you need me to do?"

An Ensign is fairly low on the rungs of command, but, they are two rungs above me.

While he awaited any directions from the Ensign, Ris readied his tricorder, setting it up for a few essential bioanalysis subroutines.

==Request GM input, awaiting Ensign's response.==

RE: HD05 - Science Cadet Rismaeriiffa Qab'ataar - Maddie Allen - 04-17-2026

== Hello Cadet! Thank you for your post! I enjoyed reading and seeing how you incorporated the formatting techniques and again and your GM input. I’ll give you that input after we discuss the next lesson, which is Lesson three: NRCs, character usage, and site navigation!  (...and funny fact, I personally just relearned a lesson... always proofread. If I hadn't, the word 'lesson' above would still be 'lesion.' ? Or maybe the lesson is don't write in the early morning? ?) Okay.. moving on...

Non-rated characters, or NRCs, are characters used by players as well as GMs to help fill crew gaps in ships. Starships usually have large crews and since we don’t have enough players to fill all those roles, we use NRCs. We have two types of NRCs: Independent and Temporary.

Independent NRCs are like a Player Rated Character (PRC), in that they get played as their own character. These NRCs are registered and you can distinguish them through their character names. You’ll see something along the lines of Ensign Doe {Allen}, with the PRC character’s last name in brackets at the end. And while these NRCs are similar to PRCs, they are not a second rated character (SRC). They also do not earn points or medals as you would with your PRC.  Also, your PRC must be a Lt [JG] or higher and have the approval of your Commanding Officer to create an Independent NRC.

Temporary NRCs on the other hand, can be created by anyone. They are not as developed as Independent NRCs or PRCs and they do not have bios. They are usually created for quick tasks, and are used for times when you need to post with other players on the ship.

To make a Temporary NRC post, all you need to do is place an OOC notation at the top of the post. You’ll probably see several variations, but they typically look like:

==Ensign John Doe, Temp Engineering NRC ==

In the case of both NRCs, you play the character from the NRCs perspective, almost as if you have a second character.  You can only play an NRC that is one rank higher than your own. This means that if you’re an Ensign, you can have NRCs that are Midshipmen, Ensigns, or Lieutenant Junior Grades.

Navigating the Fed Space Wiki
The Fed Space wiki offers a great resource to help you out with your posts.  Be sure to spend some time to check it out.  The information on the wiki is also ‘Fed Space canon,’ which can sometimes differ from Star Trek canon, so look there first when you’re researching something.  Don’t feel limited to only looking at the wiki pages for your department, because the other departments will have information you’ll find quite useful.

As previously mentioned, Fed Space canon differs slightly from that of Star Trek, mainly because this game happens 40+ years after the Dominion War. Since the Dominion War, there have been many conflicts and wars. It’s been very rocky, but all the history from the start of Year 1 to the last entry on that page have been written and played here on Fed Space.  Make sure you spend some time reading our site history

To help you get used to the organization of our wiki, please answer the following questions in OOC. Please make sure to identify where you got your answer.

1. Pick any species from our wiki and tell me one interesting fact about them.
2. Look up one piece of Starfleet equipment and tell me what it’s used for.
3. Find one starship class on the wiki and tell me something about it.

After answering the questions, continue with another post. In your post, please use Ensign Mara Tillen, the ensign in the simulation, as a Temporary NRC.

Have fun! ==

== GM Input ==

The young human ensign blinked as the simulation initialized and then snapped to attention when the cadet approached.

“Cadet, yes! Ensign Mara Tillen,” she said quickly, pushing a stray curl behind her ear. She lifted her tricorder, already half open but clearly not calibrated.

“So, um… the pod’s acting weird. That’s the technical term,” she added with a sheepish grin.  She pointed toward the nearest cluster of bioluminescent fungi. “They’re blinking in a pattern I’ve never seen. They’re not supposed to blink at all.”

Then she gestured to the habitat chamber. “And the chamber lights keep flickering, but it’s not any diagnostic code I recognize.”
Finally, she tapped the air quality monitor beside her. “Humidity’s up by a few percent, but the trace compounds don’t match anything in the database.”

She looked at him with relief. “I’m not really sure where to start. Where should we look first?”

RE: HD05 - Science Cadet Rismaeriiffa Qab'ataar - Ris'maeriiffa Qab'ataar - 04-17-2026

She's not sure where to start? Well, honesty is an important part of science, and acknowledgement of what you don't know is definitely integral to that.

"Ensign Tillen, even in my relatively limited experience, 'weird' is often the most efficient lead-in to a situation." He offered her a slight smile, as his antennae swivelled subtly side-to-side. "Now we have the enviable task of finding out what's causing it to be weird."

Ris paused a moment to gather his thoughts, and Ensign Tillen seemed to relax a little with the humor.

"Some first steps would be to analyze the source of the compounds, and as a precaution, we should both don our PPE."

He pointed towards a locker with rebreather style filter masks and goggles.

"Make sure the elastic band on the goggles is adjusted so it keeps them snug around your eyes."

Ris expeditiously donned his own respirator and goggles, his voice now slightly muffled as he spoke.

"I'll buddy check your fit, then you can check mine, sir."

After both had verified the fit of their PPE, Ris continued.

"I am going to check for any EM patterns that are out of the ordinary. I would like you to scan the fungi's capillary system and check it against baseline scans. We'll figure out where we go from there once we get that data."

==Ensign Tillen, Temporary Science NPC==
"Thank you for the reminder; Cadet, and that sounds like a good start."

She deftly configured her tricorder to scan fungal capillary tissue, and accessed the database for these specific samples.

==Request GM input, tricorder scan results.

PPE = Personal Protective Equipment; while it's a fairly common use acronym, I know not everyone would necessarily be familiar with it.==
