"Bajor is not the plaything of the Galaxy. We all know why the Federation desires Bajor to petition for membership. The Wormhole. It is that simple. If not for that random coincidence of astrophenomonon, then the Federation would have done just as it had before - left the Bajoran people to the savagery of tyrants. The Wormhole appeared and all of a sudden 'The Occupation' was some terrible tragedy. Bajor defeated Cardassia by itself. It stood alone. No help from offworld. No Saviors. No Federation. That is why I stand before you, and emphatically declare that Bajor decline membership into the United Federation of Planets, and with it ownership of the Wormhole within our borders."
The memory of her speech during the Federation Diplomatic Debate Finals was fresh in her mind. It was within this room that she had taken the stance of a Bajoran Political Hardliner, a stance that had left many surprised - a stance that Hallowette obviously didn't believe in - but one that she had decided would either make or break her final. A challenge. One that luckily paid off.
The Auditorium was more bare than it was before, filled with meandering Cadets waiting on their turn and instructors going about the business of running Starfleet Academy. Still, the memory resounded within her mind, a point of gratification that helped settle her nerves and inspired a little confidence when she needed it most. The reassuring presence of the Bajoran man wearing the uniform of the Federation Diplomatic corps also helped.
Hally glanced slightly at the man at her side, watching him carefully as she spoke with a Security Instructor she didn't know well. Her father had been a Resistance Fighter during the war; a legendary soldier and leader who had played a significant part in freeing his homeworld - and he did it all before the age of 18. After the war he had fought the Cardassian's with the Maquis, and then the Dominion. Then he had left his cause and joined Starfleet, all because he learned he had a child, and to earn the right to be in her life. Darl Brennan had served with Starfleet for a decade before he put down his sword and became a Diplomat to the very people he had spent most of his life fighting. Even in peace he was a formidable presence. Bearded, ice blue eyes, muscular physique and the same easy smile she herself claimed. He was her hero. One of the reasons she didn't really believe the argument she had made so passionately during the debates.
Hally smiled at her father as he looked down at her. Her tiny physique paling in comparison with the man's towering height. Still, the gentle look on his face and the softness in his eyes told her everything she needed to know.
He believes in me.

Hallowette acknowledged the computer and took one last look at her Father. He nodded to her, placed a large hand on her shoulder and said simply, "You have always made me proud. Now go do it for yourself."
The young Bajoran/Trill Hybrid bit her lip as a swell of emotions swept over her. She tried to think of something to say, but the words wouldn't come. 4 and a half years. A major and two minors. Friends, lovers, adventures, heartache and thrills. All leading to now.
"Go on Hals, the universe isn't gonna wait for you." said her father with a wink and a gentle nudge.
Hally joined the queue, PADD in hand, and she spent the last few minutes making sure her information was accurate, the last notes were perused and ensuring her mind was right. She was surprisingly calm, though the nerves were there - just dormant. There would be time for nerves later. Now was the time to perform. To meet the challenge.
As the Cadet in front of her, a tall Andorian with a slight limp departed for his holodeck, Hally took note of the familiar figure before her. Captain Allen had been a notable presence around the Academy, one whom every Cadet knew and could count on should things ever become difficult.
"Hi Captain Allen." Hally said warmly as she approached the console, her teal eyes sparkling like binary stars among the sea of freckles lining her cheeks and nose. The tone of her words seemed unintentionally informal, perhaps too familiar, so Hally adjusted her next sentence to meet the seriousness what she was about to undertake. "Cadet Hallowette Maxas-Darl, reporting as requested Captain."
