==Science Lt. JG Theo Suttcliffe==

It was well-known that in matters of the Quantum Slip-Stream Drive, Science and Engineering worked together. The Federation would never admit it, but they still felt like they didn’t understand the drive, and that made them nervous. If a ship was equipped with it, they were supposed to use it sparingly, only in cases of absolute emergency, and only as a last resort… Theo wasn’t sure Captain Braggins knew what that meant.

He didn’t care.

Theo loved the slip-stream drive.

In fact, when learned that he was being assigned to a ship with one, he contemplated putting in a department transfer to Engineering just so he could be near it.

First Officer Jensen’s message to Engineering was forwarded to Science, as a way of them asking for help. When Theo shot out of his chair, he knew he got a couple of odd looks, especially since he was excited, not worried. The special drive had recently been used; surely Braggins didn’t think they could do the job in less than half the time? There was a reason it was called the “cool down period” - cool downs couldn’t, or shouldn’t, be rushed.

[Jensen to Engineering. I'm going to need you to power up the Slipstream Drive ASAP, Captain's orders. Your priority is that, and the Cargo Bay pod storage. Shut down what you need to. If necessary, evacuate decks and concentrate people on other decks to save on life support.]

In order to power the slipstream drive, power had to be re-routed from the main deflector. If they had no power from the main deflector, that left them vulnerable. They could either defend themselves or run, but not both, if they chose to use this method of propulsion.

[So what can we shut down?] The text-form message came from Engineering, with the signature ID being from Ian Elliot. That man made Theo nervous; his history had him coming from scrapyards, which were well-known for being Engineering playgrounds. If he could, Theo had no doubts that Elliot would have shut down the whole ship just to power the slip-stream.

He’s as reckless as the Captain is! Theo thought, his eyes wide. I’d better get down there and keep him from turning off life support.

“I’ll go help Engineering!” He said out loud, and booked it.
