The event was as happy as it could be, they were all survivors of something that could have been much worse than it was. Now however it was a rare opportunity to socialize with people that she would not ordinarily get the chance too, and decided to take a bit of a stroll. There was one young man who caught her attention, but not really sure why. The way how he carried himself, that could have been it.

“Hello I am Beno Velaul.” She placed her drink in the arm in the sling. “I haven’t actually socialized much, but I though5 I should before this is over.” She said to the small group in front of her.

Riley seemed surprised by how honest and frank Jenny and Aitrus had been in their condemnation of the bureaucracy that permeated Star Fleet Command, bureaucracy that had once again cost the lives of thousands of Star Fleet officers and enlisted crew. Given he seemed relatively young, that probably wasn't as surprising as it might've been given Star Fleet Academy's record of trying to inflate Flag Officers into balloons of excellence, balloons that often burst the first time anyone ever had any direct contact with one when they themselves began to reach the higher echelons of the organisation. Colso excused himself, and Jenny sat back and swirled the dregs of her drink in her glass thoughtfully.

"Commander, I'd like to thank you for deescalating that situation for me. I... have a tendency to lose my senses when I become angry. I owe you an apology just as much as I do Captain Colso. The last thing this party needed was a fistfight started by an idiot."

Jenny snorted in amusement, lips parting in a toothy smirk that revealed her extended and sharpened canine teeth as she shrugged.

"I don't know, everyone loves a good brawl now and then. Unfortunately I've seen a mix of macho testosterone and the 'red mist' derail the career of many a promising young officer, and taking a swing at a command officer ranks pretty highly on the 'how to f**k up your snotty cruise' list."

Leaning forward, the smile faded and Jenny scratched one of the few scabs on the side of her face. As always, she'd opted not to get minor cuts and scrapes dermally regenerated when other wounded needed such treatment, but the downside was that every now and then the healing flesh itched like crazy.

"I'm going to let you in on a secret, and I want you to listen to me very carefully because this is something I learned the hard way, in a gathering much like this following the Battle of Tellar during the Krynar War. There is a time and a place for anger or self-recrimination; this isn't it. You survived, and because of what you contributed, other people also survived. If you feel the need to beat the ever-living crap out of something, the Holodeck exists for a reason. Those people out there, they all feel the same way; that things would've gone better if Star Fleet had better planned this, if they'd done their jobs better. It's all crap."

Jenny leaned back in her chair again, watching as a young-looking woman with her arm in a sling detached herself from a group of people and began to move towards them.

"A wise man once said it's possible to do everything right and still lose. Did we lose? Tactically no, strategically we'll find out soon enough. It's what we learn from the experience of this battle, how we move forward, that's more important than dwelling on the past. "

The young woman arrived, Trill spots barely visible on her neck, shifting her drink from one hand to the other as she seemingly focused her dark eyes on Riley.

“Hello I am Beno Velaul. I haven’t actually socialized much, but I though5 I should before this is over.”

Wondering if this woman maybe had an eye for Riley, Jenny slowly moved her chair back and picked up her glass.

"If you'll both excuse me, I need a refill."

Nodding to both officers, Jenny retreated from the table and yet the two young things get to know each other - would romance blossom between the two? Or was Velaul simply looking to expand her social horizons? Either was possible, but Jenny's glass was empty, her stomach was growling with the desire for nourishment for what felt like the first time in days, and as hostess she couldn't let one person dominate her time. Stopping by the buffet table, Jenny moved swiftly past the vegetarian options and went straight for the small but fragrant steak sandwiches, loading several onto her plate. The meat was cooked more than she generally liked, but the meat-eater in her wasn't about to complain.

With the plate now stacked high, Jenny moved cautiously back through the crowd to the bar. Quickly she found her glass replaced with another pint glass of bubbling amber liquid, using the time to stuff one of the sandwiches in her mouth; the meat was moist and well-seasoned, and the bread itself was also surprisingly good; obviously not replicated. Picking up her glass, Jenny was still chewing as she moved through the crowd and, ducking to one side to avoid being ploughed under by a tall Caitian, bumped into someone.

"Excuse me!"

Of course, with her mouth full, it didn't sound like that's what Jenny had said. Turning, Jenny noticed she'd bumped into a woman with vibrant violet hair and eyes; eyes that were a shade lighter than her own, which unnerved her slightly. The woman was taller than Jenny, and though Jenny couldn't tell by any other outward signs, she knew that violet were not colouration that occurred naturally. Swallowing, Jenny tried again, now noticing that Eli McKenna was standing with her.

"Excuse me, I wasn't watching where I was going."

Sitting on the edge of everything was dull. Ed knew that he could wander back to his quarters, but that was even more antisocial than what he was doing at the moment. Watching the goings on left him feeling like he was drowning in conversations that he had no context to. He knew of people, but there was that disconnect of how much was really a connection. How many officers had he met who eventually retired off to other things?

He couldn’t tell if numbers were starting to drop off amongst those present, but Ed did notice a couple of empty stools at the bar. He liked bars where the owner had taken some interest in the décor. He could spend time studying his surroundings taking in the detail. You needed to be well versed in alcohol to be able to recognise the array of bottles in some bars. Ed preferred to study the labels. He kept himself to a limit, but he was always curious and at least at the bar there was the opportunity of striking up a conversation with someone, even if he was sober enough to realise that he was getting an odd look.

Ed distrusted being drunk and always endeavoured to avoid it. He was a talkative sober and that really confused people when he started talking. Starfleet had a long established protocol regarding alcohol, but he’d often heard that synthehol never tasted right, so he’d avoided the stuff. That didn’t really matter as mostly he had no appreciation for alcohol in its forms. He picked up his cooling plate of nibbles along with his tankard and headed to the bar.

Ed wasn’t exactly hungry, but he couldn’t remember how long it had been since his last solid meal. The nibbles were very good and he methodically worked his way through what he had been able to recognise as he looked around. No uniform meant there was no way to recognise department or rank. He could recognise most of his current fellow crew members and some people he had worked with in the past, but there were more faces he had no knowledge of. After a disaster like what had finished a few days ago there were going to be a lot of displaced officers.

It couldn’t have been lack of planning or preparation, but this latest brushfire felt more off than usual. The enemy had been underestimated. What were the Borg doing with machines that dated so far back. Somebody had built them out of some very hard to obtain metals. Had to Borg who built the Megasphere learnt from the machines? Ed didn’t have the clearance to know. Ever since the destruction of the Tico he hadn’t been properly himself or maybe he had been and that was the problem.

Ed was halving a terrible time trying to unwind when he felt like he was going nowhere fast. He had risen through the ranks, then had gone all the way back to being a Science Officer. He wondered if he had learnt nothing in the intervening years since the war against the Krynar. They turned up and destroyed anyone who didn’t tow the line and apparently they were doing it for the good of the Galaxy?! Now the Borg were back and he felt like the boy who cried wolf. He had a few new tools for retrieving and carrying physical evidence. He just hoped he’d never need them.

There was no way to balance the scales after this one. Either something changed for the better or they’d be repeating recent events all over again. To explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations. Yet there was often somebody looking to pick a fight. There was a whole galaxy out there and barely half of it was explored. Those Doomsday Machines were evidence that there was a forgotten history. Was Starfleet even ready for whatever was waiting out there?

Commander Braggins seemed amused by his apology which there were worse ways for that to have gone. He also couldn't help notice the pointed teeth in her smile and put it together with how her body language had warned him not to push forward with his urge to fight someone. So maybe that's why I felt like I shouldn't push my luck? He didn't know anything about her but he knew that she probably was the last person in the room that he wanted to fight and that was enough to know. It's important to know a bad match-up when it rears it's head but it also gave him something to work towards. The natural competitor inside of him wanted to find out just how a fight with her would go but he was nowhere near ready.

"I don't know, everyone love a good brawl now and then. Unfortunately I've seen a mix of macho testosterone and the 'red mist' derail the career of many a promising young officer, and taking a swing at a command officer ranks pretty highly on the "how to f**k up your snotty cruise' list."

Being gestured at that he was promising was flattering, yes, but he was also well aware that it was his testosterone that had gotten the better of him. Anger was a problem for him. It helped him in bad situations like it did on the Magellan where fear could have crippled anyone else. Aside from a fight, though, anger just got in the way and made a fool of him. He appreciated the frankness of her gesture, wishing he hadn't been so quick to turn down the offer of more coffee. It would at least give his hands something to do aside from clinch themselves into awkward fists.

She must have sensed his tension still pent up inside of him and slowly he opened his hands back up. He had known that it wasn't the place or time to get into a fight but it hadn't stopped him from trying. If they all felt the same way as him, they certainly did a better job of processing or coping with the situation than he did. With the tension slipping away as much as it had, he finally got a read on the room. While everyone seemed friendly and were sharing drinks and conversations, there was also this sense of loss under it all. They had lost people and ships... but not just ships... these were homes for the people who had served on them the longest. While the Commander was right about him being partly responsible for people in the Magellan and even the initial infiltration team still being alive, it hadn't really hit him until that moment. He ran his hand over his hair and stared down at the table, nodding his head.

"A wise man once said it's possible to do everything right and still lose. Did we lose? Tactically no, strategically we'll find out soon enough. It's what we learn from the experience of this battle, how we move forward, that's more important than dwelling on the past."

What she had said about doing everything right and still losing was true. He'd lost fights despite hours of practice and failed exams despite studying. He had a hard time letting things go but carrying them around with him hadn't been doing him any favors either. Alec nodded his head in agreement when he noticed someone else had walked up to the table.

"Hello, I am Beno Velaul. I haven't actually socialized much, but I thought I should before this is over."

Alec turned to see a woman with a smile and her arm in a sling. He stood immediately and cleared his throat.

"If you'll both excuse me, I need a refill."

Commander Braggins excused herself from the table leaving Alec and Beno Velaul. He looked at the sling and noticed her drink was sitting in there.

"I'm Alec Riley. I think I've been socializing incorrectly so I would appreciate a chance to get it right for once. Would you like a seat? Do you need anything?"

He gestured to the empty seats at the tables.

Eli was there as Robin returned, though Julia had gone to get some food herself. The Security Lieutenant said "I don't mind at all and Acoustic mainly but the last time I played, was when I was assigned to the Gettysburg, its the ship that most of us transferred to the Artemis from."

Robin grinned. "Me too. I prefer acoustic, but can play electric too. I picked it up a few years back when I was serving on a freighter. I used to jam with some of the crew." She paused. "I just realized that was six years ago, before the Academy. I'm thinking I really need to practice."

Eli said "I also need a refill and perhaps get some food, will you be okay on you're own till Julia gets back?, or I can wait until she does, then I'll check in on a friend and hopefully bring them over with me."

The young nurse nodded pleasantly, starting to feel at ease now that she had some food and some good conversation. She was more than happy to not have to think about the death and destruction she'd witnessed, even during an event like this. But then, she supposed, that was the point. To honor and remember the fallen, but also to celebrate being alive. "I'm fine here, so feel free. I didn't mean to monopolize your time, and I'd love to meet some other people."

Robin briefly contemplated returning for more food, but decided against it. Three sandwiches were enough, at least for now, and it wouldn't do to come across like a starving person in front of people that she barely knew. She turned to look out a viewport, mesmerized as always by the streaks of light that seemed to pass by the ship at warp. It never got old. She was lost in her own thoughts when she felt someone bump into her from behind.

"Excuse me!"

Her reverie disrupted, the Midshipman turned to see a brown-haired woman about her height wearing a hoodie with a fleece-lined leather jacket over it. She still had a few cuts and scrapes visible, remains of the battle. Robin automatically started to give a polite greeting and let her know that there wasn't a problem. It was getting pretty crowded in here, after all.

But she stopped as she looked into the woman's eyes. Purple. She has purple eyes. Not the same shade as Robin's, a bit darker, but the last thing the young augment was expecting to see. Robin couldn't help as her own eyes widened for a moment.

The woman in the bomber jacket swallowed the bite she'd been eating. "Excuse me, I wasn't watching where I was going."

"Oh, umm, nothing to worry about." She smiled, sorting out her confusion and still determined to make a good impression as she met people. "I'm surprised it isn't happening more often with how crowded it's getting." She extended her hand. "I'm Robin Mayfair, by the way, fresh out of the Academy. Nice to meet you."

After getting more food from the buffet table, Julia returned with her food and drink. "Sorry about that when I focus on any type of work I hardly eat or sleep. I've never learned how to play any guitar, but I've learned how to play the piano and how to sing. " Julia said.

She actually liked making new friends from other ships and seeing friends that she made at the academy. Surprisingly no one asked what she was eating. Julia liked talking to other people and meeting them. Everyone that she met has or had an interesting story.

Tess stayed at the bar while Riley talked with the officer, and another who had joined in. After a few minutes they moved over towards a free table, with the officer looking over at Tess, in what she assumed was a thank you. Riley waved at Tess, in what was clearly a gesture to come over, but she refrained from doing so. Better to let him cool down and socialise a bit more, as well as because she needed something to drink desperately.

Tess ordered a glass of mead from the barman, and drank it rather quickly. She had discovered that alcohol didn't affect her as much as it did some, provided she didn't go overboard. Her two best friends, Amanda Foxx and T'Mal, had been having a drinking competition once, and Tess had ended up getting drunk. They had decided to keep that incident between them, and Tess didn't remember anything of what had happened. She tried to keep the amount she drank at manageable levels to avoid anything stupid happening.

Ordering another glass of mead, Tess noticed Commander Zan walk out of the lounge. Clearly she had had enough, and Tess couldn't blame her. Tess didn't know Zan well enough to bother to guess at why she had left, but she guessed Zan had come simply to be polite and had never wanted to attend to begin with, like herself. Looking off to her right, Tess could see Robin and Julia were still with one of the people they had been talking to earlier, and the female who had gone over to Riley had bumped into them.

People really need to stop bumping into each other here, although I doubt they will almost start a fight like Riley. Hopefully.

Looking over by the tables, she noticed a cat-like creature sitting at one, reminding her vaguely of Commander Archen on the Magellan. Clearly the Commander had decided not to attend, for reasons probably only known to himself.

Oh what the heck.... got to meet someone new tonight...

Tess walked over towards the officer, glass of mead still in hand, and stood near his table.

Smiling friendly, she said: "Hello, I'm Tess, one of the new Midshipmen from the Magellan. Nice to meet you."

God I hope this goes well

Kit could tell that Vari was surprised by her past, that had been one of the reasons why Kit told the young woman. Not everyone was cut from the same cloth but many had similar pasts or similar demons Kit had come to find. It wasn't always the person that walked up to you at the bar that had similar ones and oft times it was hard to find anyone that could come close to you in that way. But, sometimes fate had it's way of intervening and putting the right person at the right moment in your life. Kit had always been a firm believer in fate, karma, and destiny. She had gone through the whole 'why did my mother abandon me' phase, and sometimes there were still shadows of it that punctuated her thought processes. However, that was probably true of most adopted children especially ones that were adopted into cultures that weren't native. Still, she was just glad to have had the family life she had been allowed to grow up with. Who knew what kind of life she would have had with her birth mother or father.

Kit smirked as Vari laughed, she had a nice laugh even when it was a little sarcastic. Vari might not see herself as beautiful; truthfully few women saw themselves as beautiful. Even Kit herself had moments where she wished some parts were bigger, or smaller, or something was different. She had definitely done enough body modifications to make sure that her body was most certainly her own creation. Vari admitted that it might have been different if she had not grown up on a postage stamp size island with people around that weren't anything like her. Kit chuckled.

“With ya there. Japan is pretty well known for being the height of all things weird and abnormal but that doesn't mean you're accepted.” she admitted with a shrug. Kit had gone through the hiding herself phase and the hoping no one noticed she wasn't inhuman phase. But, Kit had come around in her teenage years right before the Academy and began to stop hiding who she was. Why should she be ashamed that her genome was different than the Terrans. She wasn't, she began to be proud of who and what she was and allowed herself to just be. It was hard at first, brushing off the snide comments and learning the art of sarcasm and snark.. well it had always been there but letting it out was a newer thing. Now, she hardly ever kept her mouth shut.

Vari began to speak again about how she had been better for a while, she had been engaged, and everything. Kit's brow rose, and her eyes darted to the woman's hand. No ring. Bummer. she thought as Vari continued on about how the Vulcan had up and vanished. He could have abandoned her he could be dead, and neither one of those things were something that Vari probably wished for. If he was alive he had chosen to leave her and if he was dead then she would never know. It was a hard path to walk when it was easy to tell that Vari still cared for the boy. It wasy to see that Vari had already been in a vulnerable place and now with her ship gone it was even harder to have that foundation that she probably needed. The rock on which to stand. Kit didn't know where Vari was going to go, ship wise, but at least she hoped they could keep in contact.

“Eh. He was training.” she brushed off the ex for a moment. “Obviously he was here to train you in what you do and don't want. Early mornings, heck no, strike one boy. Can't get touchy feely? Nope! Strike two, so you already have a running list of nopes. You can forge ahead with that when you find the guy you actually want to be with. I am a firm believer that no one walks into your life for no reason. Each and every person has a reason. To teach you something, to learn from, to guide you, and some of them are there to come and go and that's how it was meant to be. That isn't going to put bandaids on your broken heart but, I just wanted to say that if he did walk away and he's still out there, well .. when he comes back he's going to have a Kit fist shaped nose. And if he's not, and you ever need someone to practice the lost art of tear showers, well I'm your girl there too.”

Vari thanked her for being.. a person. Kit chuckled and brushed a hand through her short silver hair giving a shrug. “Nah. You needed someone to drag you out of the rut and I volunteered.” she grinned. “Besides, I can't just let someone suffer, not when I can at least take their mind off of it for a little bit.” Vari went on to talk about how Prince Charming would have carried her after she fainted. “Well I have more muscle mass that I look like I would but can we save the fainting for when it's necessary. I have had alcohol so you're likely to end up with an actual concussion.” she chuckled taking a sip of her drink.

“So when Vari isn't being a nosy doctor, a sad ex-pat, and a heartbroken ex-girlfriend what does she do for fun?” Kit asked hoping they could get onto other happier subjects for the young woman.

Beno could tell that some of the tension was calming down, he was the third person she had talked to the entire time there. “Pleasure too meet you Alec, a pleasure too meet you.” She said with a good smile. “I would love to have a seat with you.” She said and waited to see where to sit.

“Have you been having a good time here?” She hadn’t really had a good time yet, after everything they went through. The loss of her ship, it was all too soon. However she didn’t want to be rude to her hosts. “Do you know many people in this room?” It was unusual for her to be in unfamiliar surroundings, and this wasn’t her ship. People here were mostly happy, and even she was attempting to pick herself up from this.

“You kind of remind me of a man I knew years ago, back when I was in the academy. A good thing I assure you, he was in security.” She had no way of knowing what department he was in, as uniforms were forbidden. “Sorry if I ramble a little, you are one of three people I talked too all night.” She was a little out of practice but still coming a long way.

When Robin shared with her that she also played the acoustic guitar, Eli smiled, thinking it was nice to have that in common. Although was also interested in hearing that she could play the electric guitar, as well as how she used to jam with those that she served with on a freighter and could understand the need to practice after not playing for a while.

" Perhaps we can practice together sometime" Eli suggested, before Robin assured her that she would be fine, if she left her to refill her drink and get something to eat. Appreciating what she then said next about not meaning to monopolise her time and that she would love to meet other people.

" That's okay as I've enjoyed talking to you and awesome, hopefully he'll want to join us" she said sincerely, as she prepared to move off, before Julia rejoined them and Eli acknowledged her return. Although didn't get far as someone then accidentally bumped into Robin, realising that it was Jenny as the Arty's FO noticed her, before speaking to the Middie.

" Hi Jenny" Eli said in greeting to the FO, before leaving the two to talk, as Robin responded to her and introduced herself.

Being close to the bar, Eli found a spot, acknowledging her two best friends in the process as she received another vodka, lime and lemonade, before making her way to the buffet table. Taking a plate, Eli then proceeded to fill it up with some of her favourite foods, then made her way carefully towards Ed's table.

" Hey Ed, I noticed that you were sitting by yourself and wanted to ask if you would like to join us?".

Onyx played the role of observer, and watched as certain dramas came up and saw that things were best for him to stay out of it. For the most part, it reminded Onyx of home, when the wine flowed and the hunters became more liberal in their speech and actions. Onyx had opted that the best thing for him to do was to enjoy his drink, sample some of the food, and stay out of everyone's way. He did enjoy observing individuals, which the art of observation was often times as pleasurable as the actual killing of a prey, if not more so. When the Mirak was younger, he had to observe the movements of the workers at the scrap yard in order to get a time table of when to infiltrate the facility and when not to. It was a game to him, and Onyx got a chance to learn from the various species and other peers from different ships. His ears twitched on his head and his eyes moved from one person to another. He did have to be careful, though, as sometimes his actions could be perceived as non-friendly. It was not the case however when he observed someone coming his way.

He spotted her, and on her approach he could not help himself but to narrow his eyes slightly. What could be construed as a mean and unfriendly look was simply Onyx's instincts taking hold. Friend or foe? Predator or prey? Easy to kill or not easy to kill? What followed was a twitch of recognition. It was this young individual who caused his crew-mate to have a panic attack for whatever reason Onyx could not remember if he was told. Onyx kept a lock on her as she walked closer, holding what looked like a drink, and stood near his table. There was a smile on her face.

"Hello, I'm Tess, one of the new Midshipmen from the Magellan. Nice to meet you."

Onyx gave her a quick look up and down, noting her height, weight, hair, and he could even catch her scent. Everything about her spoke friendly, and Onyx visually relaxed. He heard what happened to the Magellan, and he could not help but think of his own.

"Onyx, son of Krylix. I am...was, the acting Chief Engineer from the Ozaki."

His voice was friendly, though he did not really smile much at all. Onyx was still trying to find a reason to.

"Was this battle your first experience outside the Academy?"

Tess couldn't help but notice the narrowing of the cat's eyes as she approached. Having a cat of her own, she decided it was more likely to be the officer identifying anything he could about her, as normal cats and predators did. She decided not to be put off, she had spent far too long having people be cautious and hostile around her for how she appeared to suddenly get nervous.

As she spoke, however, the cat gave her a look up and down, and seemed to relax after a few seconds. Tess wasn't entirely sure what he had been doing, but at least he wasn't all tensed up, and he seemed to be rather friendly.

"Onyx, son of Krylix. I am...was, the acting Chief Engineer from the Ozaki." Onyx said, in a friendly tone.

Onyx.... interesting name. At least I can stop calling him "The cat" now.

"I'm sorry for that, must be hard to be the Chief Engineer on any ship during that battle. I'm sorry that happened." Tess said, sympathetically.

Tess hadn't been through what Onyx had, but being Chief Engineer on a starship, and losing said starship in combat normally affected the Chief Engineer a lot more heavily then say, a doctor, as the ship had been their task to keep operating and running.

"Was this battle your first experience outside the Academy?" Onyx asked after a minute.

"Yes, it was. I'm fresh out of the Academy and got thrown into this mess," Tess said, slightly irritated, "It wasn't like we lost the battle, but we were far from winning... at least from my point of view. I was on weapons for the Magellan at the end, watching the carnage of the fight was horrible."

Tess waited a second, before curiosity got the better of her, asking: "Sorry to ask, but I have never met anyone of your species before. Would you mind telling me a bit about them? You don't have to, just curious."

Onyx listened to her discuss about how that losing a ship as a Chief Engineer is hard to live with. That in and of itself was not too much of a problem. Any ship in the fleet can be replaced and be re-designated. There will always be another Ozaki, but never another Antess or Nobir or Nebd.

"Yes, it was. I'm fresh out of the Academy and got thrown into this mess,"

Onyx took a sip as he listened to her talk.

"It wasn't like we lost the battle, but we were far from winning... at least from my point of view. I was on weapons for the Magellan at the end, watching the carnage of the fight was horrible."

At least she was doing something.

Before Onyx had a chance to respond, Tess had opened up to speak some more. Onyx did not mind, as he really did not want to think about the battle.

"Sorry to ask, but I have never met anyone of your species before. Would you mind telling me a bit about them? You don't have to, just curious."

Do not be a jerk to the kid, Onyx.

"I am what is known as an Onca, one of the races of Mirak. We are hunters, and...curious creatures by nature. We believe that our lives submit to the Hunt, and we must be ready for it, body, mind, and soul, to the Hunt. We hunted a great foe, even though the price was high."

Onyx paused as he thought about his fallen crew, as well as his ship. He also thought about how he could provide some kind of reassurance to the Midshipman. After all, it is uncommon to graduate from the Academy only to watch almost an entire fleet destroyed in one battle.

"One thing that we cling to is the premise that the fallen are never truly gone. Stories of this battle will be told to many. The words are spoken with the breath of the living, being consecrated forever with the memories of the fallen."

Onyx took another ship as he paused before asking.

"I take it your family is aware of your survival?"

The problem with these sort of events is that you don't really have any idea who you were talking to. With everyone in casual clothes there was no telling who was a captain and who was a fellow midshipman. There could even be an admiral walking through this room and he wouldn't know them from a person off the street. As such, he knew he'd need to be careful with how he carried himself considering he damn near threw a punch at a captain just moments ago. Though as he looked at the smiling woman throwing anything was the furthest thing on his mind.

"Pleasure too meet you Alec, a pleasure too meet you. I would love to have a seat with you."

A pleasure to meet me? She must have missed me making an a** out of myself. Perhaps it was a second chance of salvaging the evening? Alec moved to where Beno was standing near the table and pulled a seat out for her. He took the seat beside it and offered to help her take her drink from her sling. Whether it was a break, a strain, a torn muscle or whatever, Alec wasn't a doctor by any stretch of the imagination but it didn't look comfortable.

"Have you been having a good time here? Do you know many people in this room?"

She really hadn't seen his confrontation with the Captain and Commander then. If she had she'd probably be on the other side of the room, pretending she hadn't seen anything much like he thought everyone else was doing. Even Tess had seemingly decided to keep her distance. Alec rubbed the back of his neck and sighed to himself softly.

"I've had a time to say the very least and not really. Another member of my crew is here and I think I saw Captain Zan a couple of minutes ago. Aside from that? No one at all. How about you?"

He looked around just then to see if he could see them or anyone else, but the moving masses of the room only gave him glimpses of what laid beyond them. The mood in the room was still an odd mixture of relief, grief, and bittersweet. If he hadn't been so blinded by his sense of alienation and own temper he would have been able to get a better read on the atmosphere when he first walked in. He thought back on what Commander Braggins had just told him moments ago and reigned in his negative emotions. He didn't know anyone here and now there was an opportunity to do something he normally wouldn't feel too comfortable doing.

"You kind of remind me of a man I knew years ago, back when I was in the academy. A good thing I assure you, he was in security. Sorry if I ramble a little, you are one of three people I talked too all night."

He laughed a little to himself. He wasn't compared to many people often or, if he was, it wasn't always positively.

"No need to apologize. You're one of four for me but I think you're doing a far better job at this than I am. Besides, I'll take a compliment whenever I can get one. I'm in tactics, helm mainly. Was this person a friend of your's?" "

He really wished he had gotten that cup of coffee if for any other reason than to give his hands something to do.

Mirak huh... odd, he does look like Commander Archen, or perhaps Archen is a different race of Mirak... I need to read up on Mirak history....

"One thing that we cling to is the premise that the fallen are never truly gone. Stories of this battle will be told to many. The words are spoken with the breath of the living, being consecrated forever with the memories of the fallen." Onyx contrinued.

The idea of a hunt seemed to be very similar to the Klingon tradition of Honour, and the idea of the fallen never being truly gone, similar to the idea of the Klingon Sto'Vo'Kor. However, Tess had read enough about Klingons to know about two wars with the Mirak, so she decided not to point this out to Onyx, causing some sort of scuffle or him taking offence was the last thing she wanted.

Onyx took a sip of his drink, before asking: "I take it your family is aware of your survival?"

Oh lord..... I was expecting this eventually... but why now....

Tess turned a dark shade of green, clearly uncomfortable with the question, and if Onyx bothered to look close enough he would see a small trail of green blood from where she had accidentally bitten her lip too hard in stress. Tess avoided most discussions about her family, and didn't like talking about them, considering how half her family were either missing or dead.

After a solid minute of looking down at her feet, Tess looked up, and with a slight nervousness to her voice, said: "Well, my sister and younger brother know I am alive... thats about it. I can't remember my father or mother, and my oldest brother is at this point a fading memory. I have a few images, but thats all I have. M-my father was killed by Orion pirates when I was six, and my mother and brother were kidnapped. I haven't seen them since. "

Tess seemed to sigh slightly after saying that. She didn't understand why she had opened up to the Mirak in such a way, but she seemed more comfortable getting it off her chest. The Mirak seemed the type of person who would, maybe not understand the loss she left, but at least not judge her too harshly over it. She knew the fear of opening up to people was stupid, but she had to try...

Onyx felt eight shades of guilty and disgusted with himself as Tess was clearly uncomfortable with the question. His eyes focused down on her lips, and a small trail of blood flowed from it. Onyx never liked talking about his folks with people, it was one of his pet peeves. Then again, he figured others liked talking about their families. Big mistake. After what seemed like an eternity and Onyx about to excuse himself for causing offense, she looked right at him, her voice as nervous as he could not expect.

"Well, my sister and younger brother know I am alive... thats about it. I can't remember my father or mother, and my oldest brother is at this point a fading memory. I have a few images, but thats all I have. M-my father was killed by Orion pirates when I was six, and my mother and brother were kidnapped. I haven't seen them since. "

Onyx could not feel worse for having asked that, although she did seem to sigh in relief after she told him. This was not what he was expecting, and he did feel prangs of guilt for bringing up an uneasy subject. Onyx then reached over the table and pulled out a napkin for her to help wipe the blood from her lip. After taking a moment to look around, he figured what he could say to help her feel better.

"A friend of mine once told me, a crew is like a family, albeit with rules and regulations and a rank structure, but still a family nonetheless. You have your mother and father figures,"

He motioned to a group of Captains and First Officers.

"Your aunts and uncles,"

He pointed over to those who were Department Heads, not including himself. As far as he was concerned, his Department Head days were numbered with the Ozaki.

"Your older and, heh, younger siblings."

He finally motioned to a group of people who were both higher rank but not department heads, as well as fellow Midshipman like her as well as some of the enlisted personnel. Onyx then looked around as he figured there were no Admirals present.

"You also have your grandparents who would rather be at home polishing their Admiral uniforms for the twelfth time this hour."

He grinned a little at the sarcasm, hoping it would make her relax somewhat.

"The point is, there will be a bond you have with your shipmates who, wither you like it or not, will become your family. You will live together, eat together, suffer together, and mourn together. I should know, I found myself being more, appreciative, of having a family here in Star Fleet."

Onyx hoped that helped her a bit.

Onyx reached over the table, and picked up a napkin. He handed it to her, and Tess realised he must of noticed the blood from her lip. She wiped the blood away, smiling uneasily at him. She rarely got asked about her family, and she tended to avoid the subject where possible, it was hard for her to talk about it.

Onyx looked around and Tess was unsure what he was looking for, probably a way out of the awkward conversation. Then he said: "A friend of mine once told me, a crew is like a family, albeit with rules and regulations and a rank structure, but still a family nonetheless. You have your mother and father figures,"

He motioned to a group of Captains and First Officers.

Onyx grinned at that, and Tess smiled slightly, she didn't know why it made her smile, maybe because of how spot on she felt his description of some Admirals was.

"The point is, there will be a bond you have with your shipmates who, whether you like it or not, will become your family. You will live together, eat together, suffer together, and mourn together. I should know, I found myself being more, appreciative, of having a family here in Star Fleet."

Tess nodded at that, she appreciated him trying to make her feel better, and it had worked in and odd sort of way.

"Thank you, I feel better. I'm so sorry if I made you feel awkward, I generally try not to talk about my family. Some people find it strange to hear of Orions killing other Orions, and I never really felt like sharing it with people. Thanks again for that. If you are like this all the time, your engineers must be extremely lucky to serve under you." Tess said, smiling faintly.

Tess almost forgot she was still holding her glass of mead, she drank half of what was left, leaving some for later if she needed something to numb any strong feelings.

"I know this is probably a very personal question, but I am curious. Why did you join Star Fleet? Sorry if it causes offence, I just have never seen a Mirak in Star Fleet until this point."

And yet I know how to kill one of my own quickly to ease their suffering.

Onyx shrugged as he thought of just really how wrong she was. Before the battle, he was a leader, but her was not personable at all. He was difficult in the Academy, he was difficult on the Ozaki. It gave him a pain of guilt  and remorse for the one person who tried to get close to him to teach him that lesson. She helped bridge the gap between the Hunt and Star Fleet, and in turn, saved his department from all transferring off the Ozaki before the battle took place. In a sense, it was Antess who had to answer for Onyx's new wisdom. Antess answered with her life.

"I know this is probably a very personal question, but I am curious. Why did you join Star Fleet? Sorry if it causes offence, I just have never seen a Mirak in Star Fleet until this point."

The uneasy look Tess gave him when he asked about her family, so did she receive it when she asked about his. The pain of being held down while his siblings grabbed his belongings, resisting with all of his might as they carried him hand and foot to the shuttle, and how against his will he was ordered to go by his father. The look of utter shock and disbelief must have registered on his face, because they knew who badly he did not want to go.

"It is very personal, and I appreciate the curiosity. I was..."

Onyx paused as he tried to come up with a reasonable answer.

"...convinced to come. Mirak are seldom seen in Federation space in general and I had to have a sponsor to join. My sponsor had been trying to recruit me since I was a, what is that word? Teenager. That is a, long story in and of itself."

Onyx then glanced at her gently, also being curious.

"Since you are so curious about me, it is only reasonable that I ask you what made you want to join Star Fleet?"

Onyx shrugged when she complimented him for being a good inspiration, so clearly he didn't think much of that. Possibly because of losing people on the Ozaki, but Tess couldn't tell the Mirak's mood, and she knew cats tended to hide their feelings well.

When Tess asked him why he joined Star Fleet however, she got an uneasy look, and realised he probably now felt exactly how she had moments before. It was a stupid question to ask, especially of someone she had just met, and she blushed at the look, feeling rather ashamed of herself for asking it. She was always curious around new species, especially one she had only heard of occasionally, which could lead to her embarrassing herself.

"It is very personal, and I appreciate the curiosity. I was..." Onyx paused, probably deciding how much or little to leave out of the story.

"...convinced to come. Mirak are seldom seen in Federation space in general and I had to have a sponsor to join. My sponsor had been trying to recruit me since I was a, what is that word? Teenager. That is a, long story in and of itself."

"Oh alright, I won't ask anything more about that then." Tess said after a pause.

Onyx glanced in a rather gentle way, asking: "Since you are so curious about me, it is only reasonable that I ask you what made you want to join Star Fleet?"

"Uh well..... I was bullied when I was young. Earth isn't the most accepting environment for Orions, considering the whole pirate thing which is what most think of when they see an Orion. When I was about 10, my friends convinced me to make the bullies stop. To make it as brief as possible, there was a small scuffle and they didn't mess with me after it. That gave me the courage to try and join, but I loved the idea of exploring and also defending people from pirates and hostile empires. Its a good thing to be doing, I guess." Tess said, with a smile. She wasn't the best at talking, one of the reasons she would never try to be a diplomat.

Tess drank the last of her mead, and put the glass down on the table gently, and decided not to order anymore of it, the last thing Onyx needed to see was her drunk, especially since they had just met.

"So, do you have any particular hobbies or things you like doing? I prefer swimming and reading, the first is useful the last a little mundane. Do you do anything like that?" Tess asked, relaxing a little more, and trying to keep the conversation from going too awkward.

Onyx nodded as he admired her much more noble reason for joining Star Fleet, Onyx was not so fond of the idea of telling her the full truth. After all, they did just meet. She did finish her drink, and made no indication that she wanted another. There was no telling what she was capable off if she was intoxicated, and Onyx did not want to find out what an Orion is like in that state.

"So, do you have any particular hobbies or things you like doing? I prefer swimming and reading, the first is useful the last a little mundane. Do you do anything like that?"

Onyx thought about it for a moment before he noticed the weight of his tool kit hanging on the side of his hip. He wore it for so long he always forgets that it is there until he thinks about it. A thoughtful face however did appear first.

"What you call a hobby, Mirak calls it a survival skill. If a 'hobby' benefits the Hunt, then it is not viewed as a hobby. That does not mean we do not enjoy it or have fun or make it interesting, it is just viewed differently."

Onyx then what he could define as a hobby. At first he did not want to say it, but Antess' encouragement flowed through his veins.

"When I was a Cadet, a local cub...I mean children's, choir was going to perform. Their holo-emitter broke and their performance was almost canceled. One of my instructors had a niece in the choir and knew I liked tinkering with things, so she offered me a weekend pass if I could fix it by the performance. Long story short, word got around and suddenly everybody's niece or nephew had something broken. I'd later find out some of them were projects, and boy did that not end well for some of them."

Both got a good laugh, even if it hurt a little the laugh was always worth it. Medical Science has determined that laughter helped with longevity, and made life more pleasant over all. She was just uncertain in the room, but it was doubtful anyone else. Then she started to think about Michael again.

“The man you remind me of, we were closer than most.” She started. “He was a in Security, and definitely knew how to have a good time, and keep us out of trouble.” She had a little deeper thought about it a bit more. “I never really thought I would let people that close to me, but there we were. Two crazy kids living it up on Earth, with him in Security and me in Science we made an indelible team.” She thought of the times at Mardi Gras.

“He drove this thing called a Motorcycle, and at first it was nerve wracking but we made it.” There were a lot of events they drove too on it, and it made it a lot better. “If you don’t mind, what made you get into Tactical ?” She asked because most people have different reasons for everything that they do.

The other woman's eyes had widened, and Jenny knew they were both probably thinking the same thing; violet eyes were not a natural Human colour. Fortunately, Jenny could get away with it by the fact she displayed one or two Hermat traits, namely the teeth and the taste for rare meat, so she could get away with it nine tenths of the time; this other woman, though, unless she'd had major cosmetic surgery, something was most definitely up with her.

"Oh, umm, nothing to worry about. I'm surprised it isn't happening more often with how crowded it's getting. I'm Robin Mayfair, by the way, fresh out of the Academy. Nice to meet you."

Placing her plate down, Jenny reached out and took the outstretched arm. The name sounded familiar, and if Jenny recalled correctly she'd been a new addition to the Artemis crew just before they had departed. Science department, or something. Either way, she was new and despite Jenny's reputation for breaking Midshipmen when they arrived (in one case literally beating them to a pulp and another breaking their middle finger on the Bridge), this was a social gathering and the Middy hadn't done anything offensive or tried to challenge her in any way.

Yet...

"As Eli said before you left, I'm Jenny. Not long out of the Academy again myself, though I was picking up my PhD."

Sipping her beer, Jenny glanced to the side as another woman approached and began to speak about playing the piano. Obviously the young lady hadn't noticed that the participants of the gathering had changed somewhat with Eli's departure and had intended to continue as before. Mentally shrugging it off as a peculiarity of this particular officer, Jenny smiled in greeting; being careful not to show too many teeth.

"The piano is a fine instrument and it takes a brave person to sing in public. That lack of sleep is bad for you, though, you might be young and resilient now but after a few years it'll catch up with you!"

Laughing at the things Kit had to say about Sebok, Vari couldn’t help but agree with some of it, and it felt like a weight was physically lifting off of her. It was nice to have someone to talk to who wasn’t judging, and the other woman honestly reminded her a little of Blue, which was comforting in times like these.

“So when Vari isn't being a nosy doctor, a sad ex-pat, and a heartbroken ex-girlfriend what does she do for fun?”

Shrugging, scratching the back of her head, Vari let her legs fold underneath her. “Oh. Well, I comm my brother quite a lot. We’re twins, can’t leave him out in the dark for too long. Plus he has two daughters, my nieces, and I need to consistently make sure they’re doing okay. Oh, and my stepsister just had a baby too, so I like to bug her about taking care of herself, because I know all about how to keep one’s body together post childbirth,” she sighed. “I don’t think Arya’s taking her vitamins, though. Typical.”

She rested her head on her chin, “And then there’s my younger sister. She’s… God. Seventeen now. Elizabeth. My mum had her when she married my stepfather. I comm her a lot too, because she’s started to get distracted by girls at school and I’m trying to remind her that grades are more important than some pretty lass she’s staring at in drama class, but no, she’s still distracted.”

She smiled a little to herself at that. Liz really was frustrating at times, much as she loved her – Arya had told her with a fond grin that she was a bit like Robert at seventeen, an assertion that had Vari smacking her head constantly off the table. Nobody needed a carbon copy of Robert at seventeen. He was a mess.

“Other than that? I read, I draw, I talk to Pond when I can. And I work,” she frowned and gazed into the middle distance for a moment. “And work. Oh my God. I need to get a life.”

She sighed and shook her head with a laugh, meeting Kit’s eyes, “So. What do you do in your spare time?”

"I'm as okay as I can be right now. I think that if any of us were actually okay, Cera wouldn't have had to organize this party."

Isn’t that so very true… Nathan thought to himself as he turned and reached for the coconut water that was now perched on the bar top. Taking a small sip of it, the soothing sensation as it went down was delightful. Then, when it hit his stomach, there was a slight rush and even a little gurgle before it settled. Thankful that it didn’t try to come back up, Nathan turned his attention back to his friend now leaning back.

Raising his glass for another sip, Benjamin spoke once more,

"I still think you were an idiot for joining the infiltration teams…”

That nearly made Nathan snort, though he gave a conciliatory nod. It certainly wasn’t one of his brightest ideas that he ever had. As Ben kept speaking though, there was a derisive smirk that spread out on Nathan’s face, especially when the engineer said, “…great job this time around.”

Of course, there was nothing in Elias’ tone that lent to the emphasis that Ramius heard – it was all in his own head. Still, the man wasn’t wrong. It was perhaps the first success that Nathan could put into his books. Perhaps, even, a change the fortunes of his career…

Thought that might be wishing for a bit much…

“And I'm glad you're back in one piece. If nothing else, it means I don't have to break in a new roommate."

At that, Nathan chuckled and nodded again.

“Well, the same could be said for you and your heroics,” Nathan’s face changed as he said it, even though the tone had been playful, “from the sounds of it, you saved the entire ship, despite the peril. Though you really didn’t have a choice I suppose, whereas I volunteered for mine…”

Taking another mouthful of his drink, he turned squared up to Ben as he continued to speak,

“I’m grateful you are okay too,” Nathan said, not quite sure how to put into words exactly how he felt. Ben was quickly becoming a brother to the security officer. Especially after everything they had been through, it certainly felt like a camaraderie that went a level or two deeper than just good friends.

“And if we need to have a few drinks back at the casa, then just say so. Though I totally understand if it isn’t right now. Everything is still pretty raw.”

Pausing, his eyes conveyed far more emotion than his words could carry. Then, Nathan shifted uncomfortably, taking another swig before facing back out towards the room.

“I wasn’t going to ask this initially,” Nathan said as he patted his own stomach, with the coconut water that seemed to be settling perfectly in his stomach, “but, ahh… you and Cera?” a slight smile peeked out from behind the rim of his glass.

“I haven’t been back aboard long enough to get a bead on you two from the rumor mill. Anything doing in that arena, or should I be minding my own business?”

That slight smile was quickly morphing into something much more like an impish smirk.

“Cause it seems like you two have been spending an awful lot of time together…”

Sothrick quietly moved through the room though his large form did not make him easy to miss.

He had taken up a drink, not really sure how he got the glass handed to him he took and absentminded sip and gave the glass a sharp regarded look at the dark liquid inside.

It was some type of alcohol, terran, if he remembered but it had been a long time since he had such type of drink.

He had noticed Crawford across the room. He felt compelled to greet her though he was not sure what to say.

She was few people he had a deep respect for. She was more than his first CO for him she was the first to yell at him, scold him, early in his career. However she also trained him better than he had been as a Marine grunt and was the mold that he wished to emulate as a Chief of Security and hopefully one day a ship Captain himself.

He was proud to be able to hold the rank of Commander as well as the First Officer of a ship.

He continued to make his way to where she had moved to. A table with a couple of others and he waited a moment there before introducing himself, hoping she would remember him.

"Excuse me, Captain Crawford..." He said trying not to be to imposing with a respectful nod and left his words hang there.

Onyx seemed to take a while to think about any hobbies he had, but after a minute a thoughtful look appeared on his face.

"What you call a hobby, Mirak calls it a survival skill. If a 'hobby' benefits the Hunt, then it is not viewed as a hobby. That does not mean we do not enjoy it or have fun or make it interesting, it is just viewed differently."

Tess nodded, kind of intrigued at how differently the Mirak viewed things compared to most other species. They seemed to have the view that they had to have skills to benefit the hunt, and that they view a hobby differently. It was odd the way this hunt thing worked, and Tess decided she would have to read up about it.

Typical, someone does something nice and people take advantage.

"Well I guess they deserved what happened, as long as it wasn't too harsh. Thats the issue with being good at fixing things, someone will always find a way to take advantage of it." Tess said.

After a minutes pause she asked, "Do you know many of the people here? I'm sort of interested in getting to know some of the people here better as I don't know too many outside the new Midshipmen from the Academy"

"Do you know many of the people here? I'm sort of interested in getting to know some of the people here better as I don't know too many outside the new Midshipmen from the Academy"

Onyx looked around and he recognized his shipmates, though the others were a bit of a mystery. He did think about it and he realized that he never bothered to remember that many of his peer's names. Before hand, he could care less what people's names were, and in a way he still does not care. However, he thought about making an effort. Then again, he also thought about his classmates who might have been killed in the battle. Onyx realized that was one of the dangers in serving with an army or a navy. There might be a chance that someone who they studied with, took tests with, shared bunks with, and perhaps suffered with, were no more. That thought did not sit well with Onyx, who for reasons unknown to him at the time, wanted it to change for the better.

"I know very little if I am honest. But that over there is Captain Simmons, my CO. Velaul, the Chief Science, Sothrick the FO, and I believe...ahh yes."

Onyx pointed in Vari's direction.

"That is Doctor Toreen, she is the Chief Medical Officer. I believe she shares some of your blood as an Orion. She is, friendly, although the battle is still fresh in her mind, as is the rest of us."

Onyx then thought about it, she did have a very negative reaction to the sight of Tess so a familiar face might be able to help her.

"I could introduce you to her if you like."

When asked if he knew any of the others at the party, Onyx looked around, trying to see how many he knew amongst what was a large sea of people.

"I know very little if I am honest. But that over there is Captain Simmons, my CO. Velaul, the Chief Science, Sothrick the FO, and I believe...ahh yes."

Captain Simmons appeared to be talking with a woman, most likely one of the people from his ship, but Onyx didn't identify them. Velaul was talking to Riley, which Tess smiled at, at least he was getting to know some new people as well. Sothrick appeared to be Vulcan, and was talking to a ginger-haired woman. Tess decided she would like to meet them at some point, but not right now. Talking to Onyx was all she could handle at the moment, and large groups tended to freak her out.

Onyx pointed over to an area in the lounge: "That is Doctor Toreen, she is the Chief Medical Officer. I believe she shares some of your blood as an Orion. She is, friendly, although the battle is still fresh in her mind, as is the rest of us."

Some of my blood? A half Orion? Never heard of that before....

"I could introduce you to her if you like." Onyx said.

Tess couldn't see why not, if she was friendly that would be enough for her, plus her being Orion would hopefully mean they could get along. Tess rarely saw other Orions and she was really hoping that if she met one she would be able to talk to and get along with them. Tess wasn't entirely sure if Toreen was where Onyx was pointed, she couldn't see her, but there was a lot of people so she decided to give it a go.

"I would like to meet them, if thats alright with you, and if they are still over there that is." Tess said, somewhat excitedly

"The man you remind me of, we were closer than most. He was in Security, and definitely knew how to have a good time, and keep us out of trouble. I never really thought I would let people that close to me, but there we were. Two crazy kids living it up on Earth with him in Security and me in Science we made an indelible team. He drove this thing called a Motorcycle and at first it was nerve wracking but we made it."

Alec watched her open up about this other person and could see that it warmed her up. It was almost bittersweet for him to see. He had never felt particularly close to anyone and had been very guarded most of his life against it. Perhaps he was just vulnerable due to the inadequacies he felt with the rest of the world around him. Most people felt like they were speaking another language when he spoke with them and, unless his adrenaline was going, he felt ill-at-ease around others. When he was alone he was fine. Things made sense then and he could go about his day without any issues. Other people made him second guess himself, made him feel like everything he was doing was wrong.  It must be nice to feel that way about somebody... to be someone's something. She had mentioned that she used to feel the same way that he did, so maybe there was hope out there for Alec to feel connected to someone other than himself?

"If you don't mind, what made you get into Tactical?"

He had gotten caught up in his own thoughts, feeling sorry for himself and then irritated that he was feeling that way again. He thought back to what Braggins had told him about reading the room. Not the time or place for self-pity, Riley. Alec cleared his thoughts and smiled.

"Well, I was no good in science or medical - just couldn't absorb it. My dad is an amazing engineer and my brother is just as good. Me though? I just break things. Security probably wouldn't be a good fit because... I will leave it at that. Tactics made sense to me though. I like the rush of it... the feeling that all you can rely on are your own instincts and your ship. My mom is a pilot so I guess I got the idea from her."

He laughed a little to himself. Him in a security operations would be asking for trouble. Sure, on the surface it seemed like he'd be a great fit since he never shied away from conflict but it would be too easy to lose himself in it. Tactics, especially flying, made him feel more comfortable. He could lose himself in space but in a peaceful way.

"How about you? What about Science took your interest?"

Aitrus was probably one of the only people at the party that Tyra didn't feel like she needed to put up a front for. He understood, as well as she did, just how heavy the mantle of command felt after a battle such as this but he also understood why a gathering like this was so important for everyone, even if they didn't realize that in the moment. As such, their conversation was on the somber side with a few wry jabs at the brass for putting them in the situation and a subtle toast to the workhorse and old faithful that had been the Philadelphia and her faithful crew.

They'd reminisced about some of the good ol' ships and some of the wilder times they'd had aboard some of those relics before Colso had noticed that his crew, specifically his Chief Engineer, might have had a little too much and likely needed to be stopped from irreparably destroying her dignity. Apparently, not everyone was born with the alcohol tolerance of the Irish or German... or Klingon as was evidenced by the fact that her glass was once again empty and she felt little more than a slight warmth.

With a promise that she'd make a point of having dinner with the Colso when they were all back on Pioneer, she had headed for the bar and collected another old fashion before turning to survey the lounge once more. She caught sight of Cera, who had broken away from Elias and Ramius to begin making her customary party rounds. The blonde was so much better of a host than Tyra would ever be and that was fine; with Cera's help, she could, at least, give the impression of a marginally competent host. When Cera made a point of checking on her, she handed her the bands provided by the Ozaki's security officer, relaying their purpose and advising Cera to get them into the correct hands.

With that done, the redhead began making rounds again, keeping a subtle eye on those she needed to track down prior to the end of the night. She was just sweeping past the window, blue eyes quickly glancing out to where she could see some of the vessels being towed, when the sound of her name caused her to pause. The voice was familiar, oddly distinct in its tone and volume, but not so familiar that the owner immediately came to mind. However, she knew the answer before she ever turned to face the voice's owner, the reflection of the view ports offering her a great deal of assistance with the mystery.

Her smile was broad as she turned to face Sothrick. It was always a pleasure when she ran into former officers of hers, especially ones that had reported in to her as green, sparkling new midshipman. Sothrick had reported into her on the eve of what she would later know to be one of the hardest moments of her professional career, the battle for Carraya, and he had fought alongside of her during that battle to get out of the palace in one piece.  Or mostly one piece as she seemed to remember Hrothgardii carrying Sothrick out at the end. She could only hope that Hrothgardii had done as well for himself as Sothrick clearly had.

"Well hello there, Commander," she said with a warm smile. "It's been a while, hasn't it? I think the last time we saw each other, you had just made Chief of Security on the Sheridan and look where you are now!" Her tone was warm and proud, like an older sister happy to see a younger sibling flourish, even if Southrick was significantly her senior in age.

"Have you enjoyed your taste of command? Having trained Jason, I can confidently say you're in good hands but I know going from security to command is hardly the easiest transition ever. It's been seven years and I still miss security more than I'd like to admit. I may still drive my COS crazy by meddling more than a should," she said the last with a self-deprecating smile.

"I would like to meet them, if thats alright with you, and if they are still over there that is."

Onyx finished off the last of his drink and he started to make his way over to Toreen. Part of him was concerned slightly that she would have an adverse reaction to Tess' meeting. Their friendship did not really extend past the fact of they were both department heads. As he thought about it, of all of the people on board, he only interacted with the physician once, maybe twice. As he also thought about it, both times it was not a social call. The first time he believed it was when he first got on board and he had to inspect the replicators as an Ensign. The following time, he thought, was when Pond and herself got trapped in the turbolift when the Ozaki lost power. If Toreen did have a problem with the Midshipman, perhaps it would make things a little easier if Onyx was there, provide a familiar face.

Familiar, not friendly?

I have to work on that.

Making his way, he eventually tracked down Toreen, which was an easy task for a hunter. He did see that she was still conversing with the other woman who was more..."alive" than most of the others who attended. When there was a break in the conversation.

"Excuse me, ma'am, miss, pardon the interruption. This is Midshipman Tess, she just graduated from the Academy and was on the Magellan in the battle."

She had a little giggle about his explanation, and could definitely understand where he was coming from. His question was also a fair question. “Actually there are a few funny circumstances that resulted in my interest in science, most of them revolving around childhood.” She thought of some of the memories, some that could be talked about and others that shouldn’t.

“All of it really started at a carnival, the rides were something else. Centrifugal force as people were held in place during the ride, plus it was a lot of fun. Then I needed to find out more, one experiment led to another then it expanded.” She had a smirk on her face as she remembered some of the really dumb things she attempted.

“My brothers are pilots, and I got interested in the science of flight. I wasn’t ever good at Engineering, or the real mechanics of much. I did try and make a few things that flew, but they dropped like bricks. I did have one that flew, until it exploded. Fortunately there was no one in it. Naturally it again expanded, I got into a lot of mischief in ways I probably shouldn’t talk about.” She got a good laugh.

“My first year on Earth I got into more mischief, and learning about chemical reactions. Real fun times all around the world, high above and sometimes in the depths of the deep blue sea.” She was on Earth for a few years, and made a giant impact, all while learning how to be a Science Officer. “You would be amazed on how much fun you can have while adding just a little bit of scientific knowledge.” It was a little on the odd side, and she knew it.

Nathan seemed a little tense as he listened to what he was saying, though just enough for his roommate to notice. He felt bad for a moment, and wondered if he should've been more circumspect in his word choice, but it was too late now anyway, and he seemed okay as he chuckled and spoke in turn. “Well, the same could be said for you and your heroics,” Nathan said, playful of tone but his face putting a bit of a lie to that, “from the sounds of it, you saved the entire ship, despite the peril. Though you really didn’t have a choice I suppose, whereas I volunteered for mine…”

Benjamin chuckled in his own turn, taking another sip from his glass as he did. "Oh, that part I didn't have a choice about," he said. "Being on the Voltaire at the beginning... that one I had a choice over. Damn fool thing to do, but..." He stopped for a minute, taking a breath as he set his now-empty glass back on the bar and waved for another. "That damn L'Haan got me worked up, right there at the start."

Nathan squared up to him as he kept going. “I’m grateful you are okay too,” Nathan said, a little awkwardly. Benjamin completely understood, though; after everything that'd happened, everything they'd been through, they were more than friends. Despite having two younger siblings, Benjamin had been forced by circumstance to be almost a parent to them, and so just having a brother, without having to worry about them and take care of them, was a new thing to him. Also, just a weird realization to have at a party like this, he thought as he took another sip, and wondered if maybe he hadn't had a bit too much already.

“And if we need to have a few drinks back at the casa, then just say so," Nathan added. "Though I totally understand if it isn’t right now. Everything is still pretty raw.”

"Yeah," Benjamin said, "we probably do." Of course, they probably shouldn't have too many given the potency of his still, but they'd both grown to be fairly adept at moderating it, though he'd also taken to cutting it with water a little bit during their sessions.

“I wasn’t going to ask this initially,” Nathan continued on, patting his stomach as he did so, “but, ahh… you and Cera?” a slight smile peeked out from behind the rim of his glass. “I haven’t been back aboard long enough to get a bead on you two from the rumor mill. Anything doing in that arena, or should I be minding my own business?”

Benjamin was caught a little off-guard, and the smirk on his friend's face didn't help. He tried to muster some kind of defense, but Nathan kept going before he could. “Cause it seems like you two have been spending an awful lot of time together…”

Cera came up beside him as if on cue, raised her still mostly untouched glass and turned out towards the crowd. "On that note," she said, "I think I'm heading away from here. See if you can dig your way out of this one," she teased him, and was gone before he could say anything.

That... he said in his brain, his mouth opening and closing like a fish on dry land. This is her revenge, isn't it? he thought. He finally got his mouth to stay closed and turned back to Nathan. "Nothing's going on," he said. "We're just friends, though right now I'm reconsidering that one too," he added, though there was definitely a smile growing on his face as he finished the sentence. He downed more of his drink and set the glass back on the bar.

He stopped for a second as he looked at the back of the bar and tried to focus on one of the bottles there. It was harder than it should've been, but he did get it fairly quickly. He waved at the bartender and then pointed at it. "Give me a glass of that, and then a shot of it too." The bartender gave him a look, but turned around and got the bottle of Denebian Fire Whiskey anyway. As he poured, Benjamin turned back to Nathan. "You're right, though, we do need to talk, and soon. I just..." he sighed as he took the shot and handed it back to the bartender as he finished the taller drink. "I just don't know when we can. I don't know when it's going to get any better..."

As the petite but yet somehow powerful red haired turned and looked at him he could see that she not only recognized him but remembered him. She then brought up the fact that he was carried back to the safety of their ship after a trying mission. It was a humbling experience and it resonated with the last mission that they were gathered for, now.

He took a big breath and a nod. "It is always good to see you, Captain. I can understand what you mean. It is still hard for me to get out of the idea of Security but I find that whether in command or security it is still our duty to protect the ship so perhaps us Security officers are better suited for command than most." He gave then added.

"However the fact that brass has decided that First Officers of smaller ships like mine will wear two hats. I drove my Chief of Security crazy too however that was easier as he was already a bit crazy." He said with his lame Vulcan attempt at a joke. He never was really good with them.

"It was a pleasure to serve with Jason but not my first. In the past we had served on the Sheridan and for a time I was acting Captain and he my First Officer. However I think we make a good team period." He gave with almost a smile or what could be considered a smile from the usual stoic Vulcan.

"I am a little surprised they pulled you out of Security. Not that you are not completely suited as Captain. I just figured brass would have to big of a fight to pull you from Security."

"As Eli said before you left, I'm Jenny. Not long out of the Academy again myself, though I was picking up my PhD." She took a sip of her beer and smiled.

Jenny... Jenny... wait. Jennifer Braggins? The First Officer of the Artemis? Robin hadn't had an opportunity to look at the crew roster, but she knew the names of the ship's department heads even if she hadn't met most of them. And over the last week she'd heard quite a bit about Jenny among the crew who'd come to sickbay, half heroic idealized stories and half grumbling for the wild ride and damage the Artemis took during the battle. A couple of the crew members were openly angry with her, believing that it was only sheer luck that the ship had survived, an opinion Robin didn't share. She laughed inwardly. So now I've met both of my commanding officers at a party. At least I'm not shoveling sandwiches into my mouth now.

Julia had rejoined them. Jenny said to her "The piano is a fine instrument and it takes a brave person to sing in public. That lack of sleep is bad for you, though, you might be young and resilient now but after a few years it'll catch up with you!"

The young nurse could definitely agree with that. Last night had been the first real, lengthy sleep she'd gotten in a week, and she felt better than she had in a while. She was definitely loosened up (at least somewhat) and was less nervous now.

"It always happens when I get to focused on what I'm doing. Singing in public is nothing new to me anymore since I've been been doing that since I was very young." Julia said while listening to the others talk.

I wonder if they assigned quarters on the ship I'm on yet, and if they let me be a counselor that I was originally been trained to do. thought Julia.

Julia always been patient while listening. She liked to be in off-duty clothing when she wasn't working.

Ed decided that if he’d be better off joining a table, then he would at least be able to focus on one conversation. It was good of Eli to invite him over. He picked up his plate and tankard with a smile and followed her over. There were two young ladies one with faint purple hair and another with long dark brown hair. Amusingly Jenny had been drawn into a conversation with the purple haired lady.

Ed heard Jenny say something about playing the piano as he sat down at the table. Singing on one’s own in public was pretty brave. He was familiar with the tension you felt while you tried to relax so that the vocal cords didn’t constrict. The fun of being yourself while not being self conscious. Singing could be cathartic. He’d found some songs that really resonated with him in the archives. The mania for digital entertainment that started in the late 20th had been a mixed blessing of sorts.

“Did piano lessons for a while, never made it to grade one. It’s been an age and then some. Not sure I could play anything from memory and I doubt my timing would be up to scratch even with sheet music.”

Ed had preferred the music from his preferred era and before. He’d heard rumours that Klingons had discovered punk rock. Some of the works of Shakespeare resonated with them. Most notable was Hamlet. He wondered what they would have made of Macbeth. Probably it would have been their kind of play. When he came to singing it varied and certainly wasn’t stage worthy.

He did wonder what had driven his sister to learn to play. She was the family overachiever and he was happy to leave it at that. Ed had been something in his own right up to a point. He was where he wanted to be and he was mostly doing what he liked doing. You couldn’t stare at the stars all your life and not long to be out there. Danger and beauty in equal measure. He was still fascinated by space. It was all out here and he often wondered why. It was nice when you could get along with the neighbours.

It still puzzled him that so much of the Milky Way Galaxy had been explored in what felt like such a short time, by Terran standards and yet barely a third of that was known. Utopia Planitia was pushing the boundary of what was possible with space travel and the Artemis was part of that. Other cultures were still far ahead. Ed had spent almost over half his life among the stars. Some of it he wasn’t proud of, but if he could pull himself together there was always more to do and see.

When Ed agreed to join her and the others, Eli smiled glad that she didn't have to use any further persuasion in order to do so. Although if the Science Chief had insisted that he was okay, then she wouldn't of hesitated to remain with him and talk to him. However that hadn't happened as he followed her back to over to where she had left Jenny talking with Robin and Julia.

It seemed as though the conversation had returned to music, in particularly the piano and realised who Jenny's comments were primarily aimed towards. Even though she had been part of this crew for a while now, she never forgot the advice that had been given to her, from not only Tyra but also Jenny. Eli respected both of them a lot and they had influenced her in a good way, to help shape her and allow her to be the officer that she was now.

"It's great advice, especially when it comes to sleep".

Reminiscing a little as Ed added his own comments to the topic, after Julia had answered Jenny. That in itself gave Eli an idea, as she had offered to do the same with Robin.

" Well I know that I'm out of touch with guitar, so you're always welcome to join me and Robin as we talked about arranging some practice time" she offered, before Julia then excused herself in order to return to her ship and said goodbye to everyone.

" Bye Julia, it was good to meet you".

With their group down by one, Eli took a sip of her new drink, her plate forgotten for the moment.

Mayfair hadn't said anything, and the odd woman who had joined them mid-sentence without truly realising that the participants in the conversation had changed along with the topic took it upon herself to announce she was leaving and left; leaving Jenny wondering (and not for the first time) just what kind of people Star Fleet Academy was accepting these days. Despite knowing that not everyone was a social butterfly, herself included, she couldn't help but think that the newest classes of Midshipmen over the last few semesters had all been rather...odd.

Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, or just strange and stranger? Speaking of strange...

Eli had returned with Ed Gregg who voiced his own thoughts on playing the piano. Gregg was an odd duck, and had seemed to get progressively more odd as he got older; now in his fifties, Jenny remembered him as a (slightly) younger man aboard the Ticonderoga, when he hadn't shunned social gatherings and had taken a more active and assertive role in his duties. Had the destruction of the Ticonderoga broken him? Perhaps his brief tenure as Commanding Officer of the USS Pegasus had affected him in some way? All Jenny knew was that something was bothering Ed, had been for years, and she wondered if he even knew what it was.

Would probably need to remove his brain and interrogate it directly to figure out what was wrong, since I don't see our chief nerd reporting to counselling willingly...

With the group now standing in a decidedly awkward silence, Jenny took it upon herself to attempt something she didn't usually attempt. Not outside of the circle of those who knew her best, anyway, none of whom were at the table.

Small talk.

"I expect we'll be given leave while Star Fleet comes to terms with this mess and deals with any repairs and crew reshuffles. Any plans? Or is waiting until we get back to Earth more your style?"

"Actually there are a few funny circumstances that resulted in my interest in science, most of them revolving around childhood. All of it really started at a carnival, the rides were something else. Centrifugal force as people were held in place during the ride, plus it was a lot of fun. Then I needed to find out more, one experiment led to another then it expended."

It was funny how things that happen in childhood impacted their adult lives and the differences between Beno and himself. Whereas as a positive one had resulted in her discovering her love of science, a negative one had resulted in him whittling away at options until he found one that fit finally. He still remember how bad it hurt when that panel blew up in the kitchen when he was a kid. His dad had been walking him through a simple repair, he hit the wrong wire or something, and the next thing he knew he was on the floor ten feet away. Dad really lit into me on that one too. His dad was the type whose default reaction was to get mad. His son was hurt and the only way he knew how to react was to be mad at that fact, not necessarily at Alec, but he still lit into him about it anyway.

"My brothers are pilots and I got interested in the science of flight. I wasn't ever good at Engineering or the real mechanics of much. I did try and make a few things that flew but they dropped like bricks. I did have one that flew until it exploded. Fortunately there was no one in it. Naturally it again expanded, I got into a lot of mischief in ways I probably shouldn't talk about. My first year on Earth I got into more mischief and learning about chemical reactions. Real fun times all around the world, high above and sometimes in the depths of the deep blue see. You would be amazed on how much fun you can have while adding just a little bit of scientific knowledge."

It was funny to hear her talk about Earth that way. He grew up there and never had left before the mission with the Borg on the Magellan. What was ordinary and everyday things for him had been totally alien to her. Seeing Earth through her eyes must be like something else. He had grown up by the ocean and didn't think much of it, while she must have been bewildered by all the various lifeforms under there that just seemed boring to him. There were fish, squid, mussels, and barnacles... ordinary stuff... but these were new things for Beno. Everything from the mountains, to the grass, and even the color of the sky must have been a real trip for her when she was a kid. No wonder why science stuck out to her. Alec smiled as he rubbed the back of his neck.

"Well, no worries on the exploding things. I can't tell you how many panels, replicators, holodecks, or phasers ended up in the scrap heap because of me. Some people have the touch and it sounds like you and me aren't those people. So, what ship were you assigned to again?"

"Excuse me so I can go back to the ship I'm on. See you all around some time." Julia said.

"Take care of yourself, Julia. It was great seeing you again!" Robin said. She didn't know the counselor well, but any familiar face had been a welcome sight.

There was an awkward silence, which Jenny broke. "I expect we'll be given leave while Star Fleet comes to terms with this mess and deals with any repairs and crew reshuffles. Any plans? Or is waiting until we get back to Earth more your style?"

Robin shrugged. "Honestly, I hadn't gotten as far as 'plans.' I've been working so much that I was only focused on the next patient, but now that things are calming down I suppose I need to figure that out. I'd like to spend some time reading while we're en route, but once we arrive I think I'll play tourist on Earth. The colony I grew up on was kinda... limited. While I was at the Academy I loved seeing the sights every chance I got. Hmm... maybe Tokyo. Or maybe I'll spend some time in New York looking at the tall buildings like the country bumpkin I am." She said that last part with a smile, and emphasized her slight southern accent to a comical level.

==My apologies Vari, it's been a rough week==

So it seemed that Vari really needed a life as much as she needed a friend. She explained that when she had free time she tended to com her brother, they were twins and then he had a couple of daughters and she wanted to make sure that they were all right. She smiled softly, Kit didn't have any siblings so she couldn't relate in any way to needing to call and check in with people her own age really. It seemed that she also had a stepsister that had a baby. Kit's brow rose curiously but she didn't blame Vari for wanting to keep in contact with her family. Kit called home when she could to talk to her Mother and Father, she appreciated everything they had done for her and she also loved the way that they lit up the moment that they got a call.

But when she wasn't doing that or talking to someone named Pond she would draw. Vari turned the question on Kit and she smiled.

“Well I don't have siblings, so, I call my parents when I have time and can check in. But, they live on Earth so I don't always have time to give them a quick check in. Otherwise, I usually spend my free time bugging people with my stunning wit and my charm.” she chuckled softly with a shrug. “I usually find myself swimming when I have time to find a pool or a holodeck. I hit the gym more than anything, my stunning physique doesn't come naturally.” she grinned playfully again.

She brushed a hand through her bangs tucking them behind her ear again, and looked over at the green skinned newly found friend. Glad that she had stepped in, it seemed that the two would get along well enough. “I guess that's why I brought you here, this is my zen place. Where I can blank out my mind and just get in touch with myself again.” she admitted with a shrug looking around the gym before her dark eyes returned to the woman across from her.

“I have a boyfriend too, you might have noticed him in the room. It's pretty new but pretty serious so.. it's kind of scary but at the same time exhilarating.” Kit admitted with a bit of a chuckle. “He surprised me, I'm used to being sought after .. I call a lot of attention to myself with my skin and my piercings and what not. But, while he stopped me on my walk because of those, it hasn't been what has kept him around. And I like the complete trust. I've never really known that before, being a Betazoid.”

Ben’s reaction was notable and exactly what Nathan expected when he asked the question. However, when Cera came up beside and spoke, it took everything to whole other level,

"On that note, I think I'm heading away from here. See if you can dig your way out of this one," and with that, Cera was gone, a huge cavernous hole left beneath the engineer.

"We're just friends…” Ben started, though Nathan nodded with an even wider smirk on his face, along with a raised brow.

“…though right now I'm reconsidering that one too.”

I bet! Nathan wanted to say it out loud, but decided against it.

Oh Whitby would love to hear about this. Too bad I'm not a gossiper… Ramius took a sip of his coconut water as Ben ordered something else from the bar, having just finished his previous glass. A bit of a gurgle came from the security officer’s stomach, and a pang of regret reverberated in his brain. Romulan Ale was not his friend, nor would it ever be he reckoned.

"You're right, though, we do need to talk, and soon. I just..." Ben sighed as he took a shot and then finished the taller drink. "I just don't know when we can. I don't know when it's going to get any better..."

“Yeah…” Nathan nodded, his face quickly turning back to something more somber.

“I’m sure that we’ll get a chance on the next mission. Surely our next assignment won’t be as harsh and dangerous as chasing after and destroying a Borg, unh, ‘death-star’,” Nathan chuckled, though a thought did cross his head about what had escaped from the ‘egg’ when it did blow up.

Watch our next mission be us hunting down those damned things that the Megasphere spawned. If that is our next mission, I hope it is somewhere far flung so that we do have some time to chill.

There was something though that Nathan caught at the end of Elias' words. It wasn’t just about what was coming up next for the ship and her crew, but maybe something more specific to Ben. There was a lot that Benjamin had been through in the last little while, and they hadn’t been able to talk about any of it. Still, there was another shoe that had yet to drop – another piece of a puzzle that his friend, his brother, was keeping close to his chest. What that was, Ramius had no idea. And though the event was a wake, it certainly wasn’t the place to be having a deep conversation about whatever it was that plagued Elias’ mind.

“We’ll make time,” Nathan finally said, nodding with certainty.

There was yet another gurgle from Ramius’ stomach, this time causing him to clutch his belly.

Please, please no… it was unpleasant enough going down…

“I uh…” there was a grimace, and he clutched his coconut water even more tightly, “I’ve got to go, now, I think…”

Another gurgle and rumble, this time being audible enough to possibly reach Ben’s ears, erupted from his gut.

“Yeah, I do have to go. We’ll catch up soon. Promise.”

A weak smile later, and Nathan turned tail and headed for the door…

Beno was loving her time with Alec, and for a brief time forgot about her arm. It was funny hearing about the touch. “Sure we have the touch, but for equipment it’s the touch of death.” She giggled at the joke, and really felt at ease. Probably more at ease than she felt in a long time, like back on Earth with Michael. Even while being personable with members of the crew, she felt a bit of a distance but it wasn’t of their doing. Her view on romantic relationships for herself was, not the best. She would rather have a great friendship with people, and not allow them too get too close. Something she failed with Michael, and knew it could happen again.

“I was on the Ozaki, but I don’t think anyone is going to return there. I am not exactly sure what, or when the new assignment. Even though I do look forward to it, part of me would miss it. My second assessment, and by far the most successful. What ship are you on?” She wondered in delight.

Alec laughed along with her and rubbed the back of his neck. It was a nice change of pace to make someone laugh as opposed to start a fight. He had never been the "life of the party" nor would he ever be. Large groups of people in social settings would always make him uncomfortable but if the stars aligned and the right person came along... he could actually get on with someone quite well. He wasn't sure what it was about Beno Velaul but she seemed to make him feel less hyper vigilant than normal. Maybe it was the carefree way she was talking about her own inadequacies with engineering or she seemed to be unaffected by whatever put her arm into a sling. Regardless, the night had taken a better turn for him.

"I was on the Ozaki, but I don't think anyone is going to return there. I am not exactly sure what, or when the new assignment. Even though I do look forward to it, part of me would miss it. My second assessment, and by far the most successful. What ship are you on?"

He hadn't really given much thought to re-assignment but it made sense that it would happen. There was no way the Magellan was going to be suitable for action in her current state and he doubted that he would be allowed to just hang around until all the repairs would be completed. More than likely, he was going to end up on some new vessel with some new crew and be separated from the Bridge that helped him succeed with the Borg mission. Would the new ship be able to withstand the amount of punishment he had put the Magellan through? Would the new captain even allow him behind the helm as he was just a Midshipman whose last assignment saw him run his ship into the ground for all intents and purposes? Well... nothing he could worry about now.

"I'm assigned to the Magellan or what is left of her. I put her through a lot and I have a bad feeling that she and I won't be on good speaking terms when they finish with her repairs. So, reassignment sounds likely... just not sure where I'll be going..."

Tyra chuckled at Sothrick's joke, nodding her head slightly. There were pros and cons to such an arrangement. She envied that he had been able to keep his hands and boots in security for longer and that he hadn't endured the personnel headache that was a larger vessel, like the Avenger. However, she also knew that it was harder to truly become a fully fledged member of command, making the ship as a whole a priority, when you were still so heavily involved in a specific department. It certainly would have made Tyra's transition to captain even more painful if she'd been forced to fully give security up in favor of the four pips, whereas she had been forced to make that sacrifice years earlier.

"It was a pleasure to serve with Jason but not my first. In the past we had served on the Sheridan and for a time I was acting Captain and he my First Officer. However I think we make a good team period," he added.

Tyra nodded. "I would say I agree with your crew's survival from this battle as a testament to that," she commented.

"I am a little surprised they pulled you out of Security. Not that you are not completely suited as Captain. I just figured brass would have to big of a fight to pull you from Security."

The redhead's lips curved into a self-deprecating smile. "They played dirty and didn't give me much of an option when offered first officer. Not only did they have my husband do the offering, they played heavily on the 'good of the fleet' angle and every good soldier struggles with that one. When they presented me with captain, it was the height of the Krynar war and saying 'no' likely meant my crew would be handed to a CO that got them all killed. I couldn't do that to them so here we are..."

"I won't say I haven't considered whether I'd be more use in mustard but for now, that's just an idle thought. I could leave my band of misfits if I tried," she said, her smile warming slightly as she glanced around at her crew that was scattered through out the room.

"What about you? How did they twist your arm into the crimson uniform? It didn't have to do with that young wife of yours I met a few minutes ago, did it?"

Again Beno didn’t really want to laugh, she had a bit of a play on words on that one. What she put the ship through, and how much more it was able to go through because of her work. “I know how you mean, I put the Ozaki through a lot and in return the Ozaki put part of her bulkhead through me.” She said while looking at her shoulder, and it still hurt still.

It was also a time she really didn’t want to think about reassignment, it wasn’t the time or place. Now was time for a good time, and she was definitely enjoying his company. The conversation was very stimulating, and she was smiling “I am just wondering, and this might be out of the left side of the field.” It was her attempt at a sports reference, but she didn’t understand them. “What are your views on romantic relationships.” A lot of people viewed them differently, and she wasn’t sure how to explain hers.

Alec looked over the sling again and nodded his head. So that's what happened... The only personal injury he had suffered were bruised ribs from hitting the panel in front of the helms seat from the impact of the Magellan taking fire and swollen knuckles from punching things in his anger. It was an ugly habit. Something he had been meaning to break but his temper always got the better of him. Whatever had happened with her shoulder looks like it did a number on her. She was wearing it well though. Not many people know how to handle pain without it showing.

“I am just wondering, and this might be out of the left side of the field. What are your views on romantic relationships.”

She was right, it did come out of left field. Romance and Alec didn't go particularly well. He kept to himself a lot in the Academy. Not much in the way of flirting or interacting with others. His time before that was awkward with school and fighting. He had crushes and that sort of thing, but a majority of them were unrequited and he spent a lot of time living in his own head imagining what that perfect someone would be like. Alec rubbed the back of his neck and sighed.

"I like the thought but never really had much luck in that area. Always felt like other people and I were talking other languages when it came to someone I was smitten with. Maybe I'll luck into it someday. How about you, Beno?"

She had a pretty smile and he felt his face get hot at her question. It was flattering that she was talking to him at all.

This was a question that Beno seldom asked, but when she did the answer was always uncertain. For her the answer have been mixed for a long time, but mostly clear. “This is the one area of life I envy others for, people with only the one life to live.” It was a bizarre opening and she knew it.

“I haven’t completely shut the door on long term, but not really looking for one either. The hard fact that any joined Trill have to face is in this area. In Velauls past there are husbands and wives, children and grandchildren. If this host dies any romantic feelings I have for anyone must die with me, this is why romance is so difficult. Then there is position and Authority, if I did get into a relationship with anyone. I have to be careful if it’s anyone on my ship, I can not show any form of special treatments. It’s all real complicated but it can be done.” It was a little vague but he can get the point.

Sothrick nodded as Crawford talked about how she was pulled into being a Captain. He figured it would have had to be sold to her more like that. He knew when first serving with her that she was more than well suited for command but she was a Security Officer almost born and bred.

She was always dedicated to her team and of course that would make her a perfect Captain as well. When she turned the question back on him and mentioned his wife he gave a nod.

"Actually yes it did. She by herself was a surprise. That is another story. I will admit that I do have a goal of Commanding my own ship some day as well though and it obviously was the most logical step."  He said giving a look across the room as he wife moved about.

"I am not sure I am fully ready for command though." He added "I found being a First Officer even a little odd to be honest. May I ask what it was like for you as a First Officer?"

He nodded his head. The Trill were fascinating race of people but also very bittersweet. To have a long lifespan but also not, to live a long, fulfilling life whilst also living other long lives in a relative term of speaking. There was an inherent tragedy. Having a family and then essentially not having them any longer even if Velaul continued living long after Beno was gone. He thought about what it must have been like from the family members' perspective. Grandpa passes away but not really because half of him is inside of a new host who has their own life to live. Do you mourn their passing? Do you have a funeral? Well, Alec couldn't possibly truly understand what Beno was talking to him about. As a human, he only had the one life to live and then he was gone forever.

Then there was the other part about a relationship among your peers. His parents had both been in Star Fleet when they met but came from radically different worlds. Plus, by the sound of it, Beno was in a position of authority. He couldn't remember discussing their ranks when they were first introduced but it sounded like she was doing quite well for herself. He felt self-conscious suddenly. Would she be speaking to him so openly if she knew he was just a Midshipmen who had just completed their very first mission?

"That's all very true but, and I'm sure you can comment on it from Velaul's perspective better than I can, isn't romance and love an integral part of the living experience? If you don't experience those, can you say that you ever truly lived? Pablo Neruda in particular said "to feel the love of people whom we love is a fire that feeds our life."

He was coming across sentimental which surprised even him. It was the first time he had ever admitted to anyone in Star Fleet of his love of poetry. Beneath all the anger, discipline, and deserve to cut himself from stone was a soft spot he was trying to protect. However, Beno was perhaps the most sincere person he had met so far and was enjoying the conversation.

His reply was incredibly insightful, and for a rare second Beno was completely stumped. When she was involved with someone, everything seemed to be better. Both her success and failure, both of them seemed better with him. “I do have to admit you are not wrong on the issue, and it’s a level of happiness that can only be lived. To observe it from a far, it just doesn’t doesn’t give it the appropriate level of justice.”

Everything had taken an interesting turn, almost even feeling like a unexpected date. She wasn’t sure if he felt the same way. “Your point of view I do have to say is really interesting, and the reason I have not sealed the door on romantic relationships. I just don’t know how to get one started, my last one just started and it happened so fast both of us were in too deep to understand how it happened. Has this ever happen to you?” She wondered because this area was a mystery to her

The night had shifted so quickly and so unexpectedly that he didn't even feel like the same person who had boarded the Artemis just an hour or so ago. It was weird to be moments from throwing a punch at a commanding officer to... this. He really wasn't sure of what to refer to this as. One moment a beautiful woman is introducing herself to him, completely catching him off guard, and now they were talking about love and relationships. Maybe I'm just reading too much into this... He smiled and nodded his head in agreement.

"Maybe? I don't really ever click with most people. What usually happens with me is slow and sometimes so slow I don't realize what is happening until it's too late. Sometimes, it's an idle conversation or a passing smile, and then it's lit like a fuse on a ticking time bomb that is waiting to explode. I find myself looking forward to the next time I see that person and then I find myself thinking about them when they aren't around and then it kind of just hits me."

Of course they were mostly one-sided affairs. He had met someone at the Academy briefly, too briefly really, and he had thought about her for weeks until he eventually just got over it. Crushes come fast and hard, most don't make it very far at all. Still, until he was otherwise told to do the opposite, Alec sat with Beno and snuck glances at her eyes whenever he could.

"To use a phrase you used, I get caught off guard by how deep I am but didn't realize that I had been sinking for a good long while."

It definitely wasn’t everyday that Beno became speechless, but this was the second time in this conversation it happened. Long term relationships were not her strong suit. “Even with that said sometimes science and romance have one thing in common, you can’t force the results and allow it to run its course.”

“There are a few categories they fall under, and this can go on for hours.” She got up and gave Alec a kiss on the cheek. “Sometimes the spontaneous is the most fun of all, and then again sometimes you just need to do what you feel is right. Even when it doesn’t make sense to other people.” She knew a lot on the subject, but not really how to put it into practice.

Alec had felt tension over the last few minutes of his conversation Beno but wasn't sure how much of that was in his head. It was easy to do things like that. When he's engaged someone, spoke to them, and learned more about them, he had a habit of interpreting it all wrong. He'd spent days thinking of someone he had met at the Academy. Someone who had grabbed his attention from the first moment he saw her but she didn't seem to remember him at all. It could be that he was so eager to meet someone who he felt might understand him that he couldn't see someone's true intentions. An idle conversation doesn't always mean more. Keep a cool head, Alec. She's just trying to be friendly.

“Even with that said sometimes science and romance have one thing in common, you can’t force the results and allow it to run its course. There are a few categories they fall under, and this can go on for hours.”

Beno stood up from her seat and kissed him on the cheek. He felt his heart jump up in his throat.

“Sometimes the spontaneous is the most fun of all, and then again sometimes you just need to do what you feel is right. Even when it doesn’t make sense to other people."

Alec stood up and smiled, not very sure of what was going to happen or what even he should do. The room was still full of officers in various stages of laughter, grieving, and sharing stories, but Alec didn't pay much mind to them at all. When he had walked into the room he was painfully aware of each and every person that were sitting at tables or at the bar. Now it was like they weren't even there. He reached out to hold her hand.

"Beno... would you like to go for a walk? I'd like to hear more about these ideas of yours."

He wasn't sure where they would even walk to if she said yes - this wasn't either of their ships. Regardless, the party was going to end soon but Alec didn't want his night to end just yet.

There wasn’t much of an area that they could take a stroll too, but there was lots of space for two people to take a walk. With him reaching out for her hand, made the evening a lot more interesting. Other than Alec there was only one other person in the room she was keeping an eye out for was Carley, and she seemed to be doing just fine. The prospect of going for a walk was spontaneous, and she loved it.

“I would love to go for a walk with you, I doubt we can go far.” Placing her hand in his, knowing it was always cold. “This is the perfect place for a conversation like this.” There was a healthy mix of men and women, and no one there was intimidated by what rank anyone else held. Just letting the hair down, and having a good time.

“In evenings like this, what isn’t said is more important than what is said.” People’s body language always said a lot about people, and most of the time intent. “Whaat areas do you want to talk about?” She asked wondering how he would respond

Her hand felt cold in his whereas his always felt warm. A lot of him felt warm at the moment. He wasn't really sure what was happening between the two of them if anything but he felt his breathing grow more rapid. She was now holding his hand and she had kissed him... that had to mean something right? Or did it? He instinctively wrapped both of his hands around her's in an attempt to warm it.

She'd made a good point about sticking to the party. They could wander around on someone's ship and potentially get lost or they could stick to the party. Plus I could still be reading too far into this. He looked around the room for another member of the Magellan but didn't recognize a familiar face among the others. If anything, if he screwed this up at least he wouldn't have embarrassed himself in front of someone who knew him.

"Would you believe me if I told you that I didn't know? I'm kinda just winging things right now and after everything that happened with the Borg I found out that I'm actually pretty good at that."

He leaned forward and kissed her on the cheek, a receipt for the one she had given him earlier. It felt like a jolt of adrenaline pass through his veins quickly. He'd been so on nerve from the Academy, the Borg, and almost ruining his Star Fleet career with a punch that this felt like a release of some sort. Finally something positive. He let out a sigh and smiled at her, waiting to see how she'd react.

"I'm just not sure if I should keep pushing my luck."

She knew what he was talking about all too well, the playing it safe card. “Ask anyone Lieutenant Commander and higher, how many times they played it safe. I bet the collective answer is zero.” It was a play on words, but none the less accurate. “Listen to your instinct, pick your battles. Always stand by your convictions, and it will take you far.” She has made a career of pushing her luck, but making sure none of it was going out too far.

Feeling the kiss in the cheek, Beno blushed a little. “Another thing to remember is a phaser is deadly thing, but a kiss can be deadlier if you mean it.” It was a saying that she liked to say, but it originated from a previous host. The only question she had in her mind again, was why is she allowing anyone to get this close. Her body language started to indicate more clearly that she was opening up, there were only two people that got this close too her and they are completely irreplaceable.
