Tyra didn't particularly consider herself a creature of habit, not when compared to someone with a rigid need to have everything scheduled like her husband, but with her position came a certain necessity to carefully schedule important things in or else they'd be swallowed by the inevitable crises and responsibilities of command.  For instance, she made sure that twice a week she had time for an extended bedtime routine with Evie to give Thomas a break. She made sure that she made time for coffee with Jenny periodically during the week and tried to check in with each of her department heads over two week periods. The things that were important and vital needed to be given time to protect them from the erosion of duty and crushing demands.

In that same vein, she was just as careful to make sure that she allowed time to keep her skills sharp. Every week, she had four strength sessions with Thorsdottir that pushed both of them immensely. It was amazing how much power was packed into her training partner's tiny frame. Additionally, they had two or three combatant sessions with diverse styles, some like BJJ favored Thorsdottir and some like traditional boxing favored Tyra. Tyra also still worked through Haslet's running program, though she alternated it with the combatant sessions. And lastly, Tyra continued regular shooting sessions, sometimes on the holodeck for a training session and sometimes on the range for a more focused approach. Some likely would view the regimen as overkill for someone no longer wearing the orange of security but she knew that skills faded far faster than they were developed; she had worked far too long and fought through far too much to allow the very things that had kept her alive to rust like unappreciated gifts.

Today, her day off, had been a particularly grueling training day as far as strength training had gone but that was a good thing for her current needs.

There weren't many people mulling about the security office when Tyra walked in, looking less polished than usual. Her braid was pushed over her should and sweaty tendrils framed her face. Her uniform had been exchanged for a tank top and what looked to be leggings secured with a EDC belt. A black pair of tennis shoes carried her through the office towards the armory with a gym bag slung over one shoulder and a range bag over the other. No one questioned her presence or her destination, knowing she had a standing arrangement with Coleman for use of his range when she pleased. Plus, in her current state, she likely appeared more intimidating than usual.

The range was quiet when she stepped inside and moved towards one of the furthest bays, preferring to remain out of the way for those training. She dropped her black and teal gym bag near the back wall and then, set her range bag on the stall's bench.

Her hands shook as she unzipped the bag and pulled out her holstered ballistic pistol. The tremors made attaching the holster to her belt difficult but that was the point. Training when tired and battered was more accurate than training in ideal situations because conflict never came when one was fully rested and bouncing with energy.  With that in mind, she pulled Valkyrie, her trusty Type 3 rifle and survivor of the Rogue Planet, from the bag. She carefully examined the weapon, noting a few nicks she had missed when caring for her after their harrowing Borg adventure, and made a mental note to address them later.  She had taken similar care of Nemesis after Nathan had returned her, following his trip through the heart of the Megasphere.

Once the bag was fully unloaded and her targets set, the redhead took a deep, steadying breath. Her hands still shook ever so slightly and her muscles were tight and coiled but any soldier that claimed their hands hadn't shaken and their muscles hadn't ached in the heat of battle probably had some ocean front property in the heart of the Sahara for sale as well. What mattered far more was the ability to push beyond and adapt to such reactions to adrenaline and fatigue, which was why she liked to do the occasional confidence session to remind herself that she was capable of pushing through it all. This session wasn't about speed but about accuracy and muscle memory.

She carefully picked Val up, positioning the sling over her shoulder as she replaced the power pack in the rifle with one of the ones off the bench. After a power check, she nodded slightly and brought the the rifle to her shoulder with all the confidence and surehandedness of someone who had spent hours upon hours with the weapon. She'd always found that, despite their weight and the difficulty shouldering them when absolutely exhausted, rifles were far more forgiving of the tremors. Maybe it was added stability of the shoulder placement or maybe it was the front hold she had installed on Val but it was easy to account for the ever so slight shifting of the reticle as she stared down the sight. The smooth trigger pull was harder to accomplish but she let off three deliberate rounds with accuracy all the same.

Her fourth trigger pull was met with the click of a deadman's trigger. The click wasn't as pronounced in the Type 3 as it was the PR-1 but it was a sound that struck fear the heart of even the most experienced marksman, which was why it was so important to encounter in training. There wasn't even a moment's hesitation before her right hand was coming off the rifle and moving down towards her holster to draw her side arm as her left hand escorted the rifle down and behind her to hang out of the way on the sling. Her pistol was already up and firing before the rifle had stopped jerking on the sling. If she was timing, it was likely a little over 2 seconds to transition between the two, which felt like an eternity while in the fire but was certainly faster than trying to determine why the rifle had gone down during a fight.

With three rounds released and on target, the redhead re-holstered her pistol and pulled Val back over her shoulder to hang in front of her. "Not too bad... let's do it again..."

Downtime had still been anything but restful for Nathan, ever since their launch to the Delta Quadrant really. But as other things in his private life happened, he pushed himself even harder to keep busy in the Department. Extra duties, shifts whenever someone needed coverage, and any small or miniscule task that people didn’t want to do, Ramius swept them up. Amongst his colleagues, he was winning plenty of points. However, it wasn’t long before Coleman started to notice a sharp uptick in Nathan’s working hours. For the young man, he thought for sure the Security Chief would be happy to see him being so active. It wasn’t the case.

“Are you going to tell me what’s going on?”

“Just trying to stay busy sir.”

It wasn’t a lie. But it wasn’t the whole truth either. It also wasn’t the answer that Coleman was looking for, that much Nathan could read in the Chief’s face. Whether it was how he had answered, or perhaps it had been a rough day for Damian, his boss only let out a frustrated sigh and shook his head. Nathan had stood tall then, waiting to be berated. Though secretly, he hoped that perhaps he might be given more work to do. Instead, it was a horrendous turn of fate,

“Fine. I’m relieving you of your duty shifts for tomorrow and the day after. Enjoy your next couple of days off. When you return for your next shift, pop into my office first thing.”

Slack-jawed and stunned, Nathan had mumbled his ‘yes sir, thank you sir’ without thought. It was the worst-case scenario that he could think of. After leaving the office, he had considered turning around and spilling everything to Coleman about what he was going through. However, something told him that even if he did do that, the Chief would keep him on days off; whether for effect, or otherwise.

A heavy weight settled on Nathan’s shoulders that next day. The early morning was filled with the usual routine, save for a particularly intense cardio routine. Though, even that was becoming a hallmark of high stress levels for the Ensign. Once the everyday procedures were through, Ramius found himself sitting in his room alone, with nothing but his thoughts to contemplate. It was a place he’d rather not be. There were just too many things to deal with, and even more had a string of emotions attached to them as well.

Woodworking, cello playing, puzzle solving, paper writing, and another workout helped to pass some of the time. It had been a solid keep-busy solution. Yet, even after all of that was done, it was only the evening of the first day, with plenty of hours left before lights out. Nathan had considered calling up someone. He reconsidered it when the realization of the possibility of having to open-up about things came with every possible scenario, which included going so far as having a chat with Commander Braggins; she would beat the issues out of him, Nathan had no doubt.

Instead, Nathan tried nearly an entire catalogue of relaxation programs, in and out of the holodeck. None of them had worked, as the moment where he managed to clear the stress away, two faces appeared in his mind’s eye that he was attempting to escape. The first face was a long-standing anguish. The second face, however, was much more recent. And much more Nathan’s fault than even the first. However, his sheer determination to try and not face his demons worked for the first night, as he came back to his quarters too tired to even change clothes.

The next day started much the same as ever; an excruciatingly long and intense workout session, followed by cleaning himself up and downing some quick chow; dodging any intrusive thoughts through sheer will. However, his heart dropped when he realized what day it was. Amongst staying physical fit, Nathan always made sure to spare time for keeping himself at top form in all aspects of his Security job. There was always some training to be done, and he would have normally focused on his marksmanship that day. The problem being, was that it was a forced day off.

Would Coleman take issue with me doing some shooting for a bit? Only one way to find out.

Normally, he would have been in uniform to go out onto the range. However, in order to keep with his exile orders, he entered the Security Complex in a black crewneck t-shirt, gray sweatpants, and white cross-trainers. Crewman Brubaker, manning the front desk, eyed Ramius with suspicion. In return, Nathan raised his finger to his lips and carried on toward the door leading to the Armory and Range.

Thankfully, things were relatively quiet in the front of the complex, though it sounded like the Range was in use as he strode through the doors. Looking over, the man was struck with a dumb look when he saw who it was; or, at least, who he thought it was. A smile slowly danced across his face as he walked over to the Armorer, and requisitioned both a P-1 and a PR-1. It was a habit of his to practice firing both ballistic and energy weapons since the Rogue Planet, but especially after his foray a second time into the Megasphere.

With weapons, rounds, and magazines in hand, Nathan moseyed up and watched as Tyra discharged her weapons. When the shooting stopped, he entered the main range area and parked himself in the booth next to the Captain. It seemed, that Tyra kept up with her practice quite often, Nathan thought. The grouping on her targets were tight, though he supposed he shouldn’t have been too surprised. Crawford had been a security officer first, and even during missions tended to take a security-style approach to most situations.

“That’s a nice grouping,” Nathan said as he rounded the booth with a warm smile and trying not to stutter, “and definitely better than some of the people on Rapid Response team I’d wager. You can take the Captain out of Security, but you can’t take Security out of the Captain?”

Nathan’s smile had morphed a bit as he did a hatchet-job on an old turn-of-phrase. That’s when he took notice of the clothing Tyra was wearing, and it felt odd to see her out of uniform again. Not that he hadn’t ever seen her out of uniform. It was more of the fact that he was getting the chance to speak with her out of uniform and in a casual manner. The last time had been back in Elias’ quarters for a drink.

“I don’t even know if I should squeeze off any rounds with you on the range, as it looks like you’d put me to shame,” he laughed despite being quite serious.

“Actually, you might be able to protect me if Coleman finds me in here. I’m supposed to be anywhere but Security today, but I ran out of…” Nathan paused and considered his words, “…productive things to do on my forced time-off.”

== Office, Chief of Security ==

It was done. Clear. Clean. Crisp. Damian had worked hard to get his office back to where it was now, with everything in its place, his desk barren of anything but a singular PADD and the console. He had completely underestimated just how much information would come to him in the form of reports, recommendations, and then having to disseminate all of that back out to his Department. Of course, Coleman knew that paperwork was the bane of any Security Officer; he had known that since being an Ensign. Now, though, he had a new appreciation for his old Chiefs, and even Command.

“Computer, set lights to morning,” the change was instant, with the lighting getting a bit brighter and significantly warmer in tone.

Striding across the room, he went over to the small replicator and tapped on the control surface as he tried to decide what exactly he wanted. It took a few minutes for him to go through the various menus, though he wasn’t feeling particularly hungry. In the end, it would be the same thing he would always have.

“Coffee in a four-servings container, dark roast, black. Add an extra five percent caffeine. Two cups for serving.”

The replicator spun up and left behind exactly what he had asked for, which Damian then carted off to the small table near the entrance of the room. Pouring himself a cup from the carafe, he held the mug aloft and took in the aroma of the coffee before taking a sizeable sip of it. It was strong, a little bitter, but still was exactly what he was craving.

Walking back over to his desk with a smile on his face, Damian grabbed the PADD up and took a look at his schedule for the day. As was his custom, he put his toughest meeting first. However, if anyone asked him, it was probably one of the easiest days he’d ever scheduled himself. Meeting with Lieutenant McKenna, as he had come to learn, would mean a congenial and fruitful discussion.

Unlike certain other officers I’ve dealt with…

Another minute passed, before Coleman found his seat at his desk, and he visibly relaxed, re-reading McKenna’s mission report from the Talaxian Asteroid Colony. The door to his office was already open, and he had instructed McKenna to invite herself in as soon as she arrived to the Security Offices.

Whilst Eli knew that this was a scheduled meeting with Coleman and the reasons behind it. There was still a little apprehension lying at the bottom of her stomach. It wasn't as if she didn't get on with the Chief and that this was her first ever meeting with him, yet she could entirely shift that feeling, despite telling herself that she was overthinking it again. Although as she walked through the complex, her thoughts turned to her report and even though she wasn't exactly a hundred percent herself on the inside, had already decided to stick with what she had written finding no need to change or pretend otherwise, even if she was being hard on herself as a result.

So by the time she reached Coleman's office and after exchanging greetings with those that she had passed on the way. Eli was ready to face Coleman, determined and well like other usual self. Having already been told to enter instead of pressing the door chime. Eli did just that as she walked in and stood at attention in front of his desk. The aroma of the rich and inviting coffee enticing but she didn't waver as she addressed the Chief.

"Reporting as requested Chief".

The sound of the doors to the office swishing open broke Damian’s concentration on the report in his hands. Of course, he knew exactly who it was, and she was punctual as ever.

"Reporting as requested Chief,” he heard her say, even as Coleman rose from his chair, resting the PADD back on the desk.

“McKenna, on time as usual. Coffee?”

Damian hadn’t waited for a reply to his question from the Lieutenant, as he already knew the answer; if there was ever a shortage of coffee, at least half of his Department would have trouble coping. Still, from what he knew of the Captain, a coffee shortage would be heretical. Walking over, Damian poured a cup of the darkly roasted nectar, and then offered it up to Eliana. There was a warm smile on Coleman’s face as he did so.

“Here you go. It has a little extra zip to it; I needed it from the long week I’ve had clearing my desk,” his voice sounded joking at the end, though the reality had been that it was the truth of the matter.

Gesturing to one of the two open seats on the other side of his desk, he went back and sat in his own, grabbing another sip before speaking again. Damian leaned back a little in his seat, the mug still in his hand, and inquisitive look on his face.

“How is William doing? And Liam, how is he? Actually, that is something I intended to ask you once, but never got the chance,” he leaned forward, sipping once more, “isn’t Liam short for William too? Or does Doc McConnelly just go by Liam?”

He smiled broadly now, as he awaited Eliana’s response, the PADD on his desk still unturned. And he intended on it staying that way, at least for the first while. So many of his other meetings had been rushed as Damian tried to clear his slate. It wasn’t how he wanted to run things. He did intend on getting to know his Department. But some of them required a firmer hand before he could get more personable, if at all.

Despite how she had felt initially on the inside and even though it still lingered in the recesses of her mind. Eliana found herself smiling as Coleman commented on her punctuality and asked if she wanted coffee. The fact that he didn't wait for an answer well it proved he knew her well and most of the department when it came to such a beverage.

"You know me well and thank you" she replied as he returned with a mug of dark nectar and told her that it had a little extra zip in it and why he had needed it. "Ah sometimes we all need an extra nip every now and then".

As she then sat down in one of proffered empty seats, the warmth and aroma from the drink in her hands, felt soothing and reassuring as she took her first sip. The extra nip it was very welcoming as Coleman then asked about William and Liam. "William is doing great and has just started to crawl so that's been interesting and as for Liam, same although busy with some of his research" she said happily, then again she always was when she got to talk about the two special men in her life.

Although when Coleman then asked about Liam particularly in regards to his name being short for William and if he just went by Liam. It was something that Eli hadn't realised until now other than the similarities between her son and boyfriend's names. "I've always known him as Liam but now you've said that, if it is then my son was named after two very special men in my life".

Whilst it had never come up, Eli was definitely intrigued and would certainly mention it to her beloved later. For now she was enjoying the conversation with the Chief and he was definitely putting her at ease.

Damian was glad to see McKenna relax a bit from when she first walked into the office. There were uses to having people uneasy when entering the boss’s office, but mostly it was better for people to be honest about things. Especially for senior department officers. They were his eyes and ears, but also the ones to toe the line as needed. Coleman did wonder sometimes if a Department ever got to the point where self-policing wasn’t needed.

As Eliana started talking about William, it was obvious how much heart and love that she had for her family. It was a topic that engaged her immediately, and to hear her speak, Damian could hear just how excited she was. It was pleasant to hear, and he listened intently as she answered the questions. Then, as she spoke of Liam, there was a strong attachment there too. It made Damian smile again, as her happiness was apparent.

“That’s good to hear. I know that once I learned to walk, I was a terror for the family. Sounds like you’ve still got time before finding out how William will be.”

Taking a sip of his drink, he then listened as Eliana explained Liam and his given name. It seemed interesting that the two most important men in McKenna’s life, as she put it, might share a similarity in name. It did make Damian wonder about coincidences, fate, and the like. After all, he never thought ever that he’d meet someone like Kit. But he had. And he was better for it.

“It was interesting when I thought about it. But I’m glad to hear you have such a strong family backing you. We all need good support out here in the Dee-Qu.”

Gently, Damian placed his coffee off to the side of his desk, and then grabbed up the PADD.

“Well, let’s shift to business for a bit here. I apologize for not getting to your report. I did read it when it came across my desk, but there have been other items I have had to focus on first. Plus, I needed some time to consider some things.”

Sitting back in his chair, Damian’s smile waned a little, but his body was still relaxed. Bringing the PADD up a bit, he took a look down and read his notes that he had made.

“First, I want to commend you on your work on the asteroid. There was quite a lot that was thrown at you and the Department, and you did your best to handle it all professionally. And I have to agree with you and what you said at the end of your report; there were a lot of moments that we can take away and learn from. But I think it is important to realize that we can’t always anticipate everything during a mission.”

“Specifically, I want to address the incident with Miaxia and Doctor Sydesh. There is no way you could have known what was going to transpire between them, and just how traumatized the young Talaxian woman was. We did our best under the circumstances, and we can’t control the actions of civilians. If you are still affected by it, I want to encourage you to talk about it. To me, the ship’s counselor, anyone really.”

“It was a critical incident though, and leaves a lot for all of us to consider while on such an Away Mission. In this case, there are takeaways for me too. We needed more personnel down there. That is on me. No one should have been left alone, and we should have been clearing civilians before allowing them to be treated. Even a quick tricorder scan for weapons would work, which is something we didn’t do. We, and Doctor Sydesh, were lucky that the outcome wasn’t a poor one from a much stronger and less improvised weapon.”

It was at this point that Damian paused, taking time to look to Eliana and giving her a moment to consider things.

“Anything that you’d like to add to those points? Speak freely, because I want to hear criticisms if you have any. Also, I do want to check in with you and make sure that you are taking care of yourself. An incident like that is hard to watch, let alone be a part of. I want and need to make sure that you are doing okay.”

Grabbing the mug from off the desk, he took a good swig, though kept his focus on McKenna.

Talking about William, Liam and well anyone she was close too came naturally to Eli and never really hid her happiness at doing so. Coleman maybe her superior but she found him as easy to talk to as any of her friends and appreciated the insight into his own background as he revealed what he was like when he was younger.

That brought out a smile as she tried to imagine Coleman being a terror and he was right in what he said about still having time before finding out if William would be the same. " We do indeed, although he's already quick so I can only imagine what he's going to be like when he gets more mobile".

She may be jokey but she was looking forward to witnessing that milestone, before Coleman commented about the similarity of the names and how he was glad that she had a strong family. Not to mention how they all needed support out here in the DQ. "Thank you me too and I agree, it's definitely important to have that".

When Coleman turned the conversation to why he had wanted to see her. Eli sat up a little straighter and gave him her full attention. Listening as he apologised for not getting to her report straight away and his explanation as to why. "No need to apologise Chief, I understand".

With that out of the way, Eli once again focused on what he had to say. Feeling a sense of pride as he commended her even if she didn't feel like that at the time. Although having her and her teams work acknowledged was certainly appreciated and his feedback was positive. Eli liked how he took their thoughts and was willing to use them especially if it benefitted the department and as difficult as it was down there, he was right you couldn't anticipate everything that could happen on a mission.

Yes she had been hard on herself but that was one of the job hazards and rather than interrupt, let Coleman continue as he moved onto the incident where Beka got hurt. He was right again they had no way of knowing and it had been beyond their control. Yes it had affected her but no more than if it had been her or another member of her family. But she had learned to talk about it and not bottle it up but again it was good to have the offer to do so with him or the counsellor.

They were lucky that it wasn't more serious and that they could all take away something from it, including the Chief and learn from it so it didn't happen again or at least take more of a, preventative step. When he then paused to give her time to process it all, Eli then spoke up to acknowledge what had been said.

"You're right we did do our best and we had no control over it but as scary as it was, I've learned to not bottle up my emotions, anymore and to talk about these things. Going forward I think we can all take away something from this and maybe take a more preventative stance by issuing Tricorders to our teams before an away mission".

That said, Eli realised that she had included an idea before Coleman encouraged her to add anything else and speak freely even if it was a criticism which only proved why she liked him as a Boss. As well as wanting to know how she was and that she was doing okay. "Aside from what I've just said, I don't think there is anything else other than perhaps have an initial team of say six beam down first with at least two maybe three teams on standby depending on the situation".

"As for me, yes I did take it hard and pushed myself more than normal but I have people making sure that I'm taking care of myself which I'm grateful for. I also appreciate you looking out for me and I will admit that I've had issues with my right knee but that's been rectified and I'm like brand new".

Listening carefully while he took in the aroma of his drink, Damian was happy to know that Eliana was taking care of herself; as there were more than a few officers in his Department that tended to bottle things up. One in particular came to mind, but he dismissed that issue for another time. McKenna though, he knew, had a large support network. Ultimately, he hadn’t been particularly concerned for her, but was glad to check-in regardless.

Still, he waited until McKenna was completely finished her thoughts and what she was saying. Coleman didn’t want to influence what it was that she might add to the conversation. There were already plenty of things to move forward on, but he needed to know if he had overlooked something. Most policies weren’t even Damian’s, but standard Star Fleet protocol. So, in making any alterations, Coleman had to be sure about what it was that he was changing. Plus, he also wanted to make sure that it would pass muster with the brass, particularly Captain Crawford, who had ran Security herself once upon a time.

“I’m glad to hear that you are taking care of yourself, both physically and mentally. Our jobs are tough, and we often put ourselves in harm’s way. It is important that everyone in the Department is at their best, not just for the job, but the principle of the thing.”

“As for security tricorders, those and Type-2H phaser pistols are standard equipment all Security officers should have on them for pretty much every Away Mission. If anyone isn’t taking those with them, then I want to know about it. I do agree with you on a pre-sweep team of some kind, particularly in scenarios where we have some time before the primary Away Teams need to go down. That is something I’ll have to clear with Commander Braggins likely, and Captain Crawford too, possibly on a case-by-case basis.”

Damian ross from the desk, and walked back over to the carafe. Pouring himself some more coffee, he walked back over with the jug, and topped up Eliana’s drink too.

“Standby teams are also the norm too, including the Rapid Response Team. In the case of the Talaxian Asteroid, we got caught in a situation where our ship ended up having to leave Area of Operations. Could be that we create a new protocol with Command and Tactical: if for some reason the Artemis has to jet, they beam down one of the standby teams just in case.”

There was a brief pause, as Coleman considered that, then placed the carafe beside his console. Then, he took a quick sip of his drink before setting that down too, and adding a note to his PADD. The next item was already listed in his points that he wanted to cover with McKenna. So, he continued.

“The next part I want to go over is the ‘freighter incident’,” his voice dropped to a slightly lower pitch, “the one where we forcibly removed a resident of the Colony from their home, who also happened to be a minor. That whole situation had me concerned, and I still worry about how things were handled.”

“There were a lot of factors that influenced the situation, some of which we as a Department have no control over, others from the perceived severity and potential outcomes if we failed. In your report, you mention that training might help for the future, and I’m interested to find out if there is anything specific that you have in mind? I have some thoughts already, but I want to hear from you first. I also want to give you the chance to add more detail, or give your thoughts to how things unfolded on the asteroid too.”

Taking a moment to have another reassuring sip of her coffee. Eli was grateful for the delicious dark nectar, almost as if it was giving her another boost. So when Coleman then spoke again to tell her that he was glad that she was taking care of herself. Eli looked to him with another genuine smile as he continued and agreed with him about the importance of the department being at their best.

"We do and I agree with that as it's something we can't ignore".

As he moved onto her recommendations regarding tricorders. Eli understood that they along with the Type 2-H phaser pistols were standard equipment so that was something to double check prior before beam down. Then again she usually did but it was still something to be mindful about. Eli also appreciated how Coleman agreed with her pre sweep idea and that it was something to run by the command team and monitor on a case by case basis.

"Understood, it's something that and others can double check before we leave the department and as for the pre sweep team that's how I also envisioned it operating and being dependant on approval".

As the Chief then got up to fetch the carafe, then refilled both of their mugs. Eli thanked him for the top up, before the conversation moved onto her idea of having teams on standby. Whilst it was the norm along with rapid response, the situation that they had found themselves in when the ship had to take off, would serve as a lesson to make improvements. So the possibility of creating a new protocol that would guarantee the arrival of at least one team was something that she could get behind.

"That's a good idea and one that I can get behind so we're better protected and can deal with a situation with more efficiency".

At the very mention of the freighter incident, Eli tensed a little as Coleman's voice lowered slightly. Not that she had forgotten what had happened or what she found out afterwards. The whole thing had felt like one big frustrating disaster and understood why Coleman was still concerned and worried about it. Yes they could never of predicted the outcome or how things were against them but she didn't want there to be a repeat of it.

With Coleman giving her the chance to offer up more ideas in relation to her training suggestion in her report and the opportunity to add anything and share her thoughts, she was going to take it. "I was thinking that we could recreate the incident on the holodeck or as close to it as we can, that way we can see what works and what doesn't. I will admit that it was frustrating as nothing we did seemed to work and when we finally started to get somewhere, it was either try to remove the occupant or have us and the entire asteroid blow up".

Eli paused for a moment then went on. "I don't think we had a lot of choice but I'm glad that we had Lieutenant Elias there to help and we did the best we can, but at the same time, all we can do is learn from it, see what we could change as it's something that has stayed with me".

Tyra had sensed someone enter the range during her fourth stage of fire but it wasn't until she completed the stage that she turned her head enough to see whether it was Brid checking in before the start of her shift or a poor, hapless security officer stumbling upon their captain out of sheer poor luck. It seemed it was more of a case of the latter, though Nathan was hardly an unknown element who needed to stutter and cower in her presence. Then again, while she did appreciate a level of respect and intimidation that matched her hard earned reputation, she would rather the young members of her crew not look like puppies about to wet themselves when they ended up in enclosed spaces with her.

“That’s a nice grouping,” Nathan commented as he came fully into her view, “and definitely better than some of the people on Rapid Response team I’d wager. You can take the Captain out of Security, but you can’t take Security out of the Captain?”

The redhead smiled and then, shrugged. "I mean I always said you can take the girl out of the honkytonk but you can't take the honkytonk out of the girl... but those are likely two very related statements," she answered with a chuckle as she set Val onto the bench with an affectionate pat.

“I don’t even know if I should squeeze off any rounds with you on the range, as it looks like you’d put me to shame,” he joked, though she wondered if there was some intimidation.

"Nathan... I'm not sure I need your lips that close to my ***," she shot back, her eyebrow arched but her lips pulling into a grin. She actually laughed as she came to rest an arm on the side of the stall. "In all seriousness, this is a casual round with no movements and no timer so it better look damn clean. I've got a reputation to up hold, after all."

“Actually, you might be able to protect me if Coleman finds me in here. I’m supposed to be anywhere but Security today, but I ran out of…” Nathan paused and considered his words, “…productive things to do on my forced time-off.”

Her eyebrow somehow managed to arch higher, her lips pursing together slightly as she regarded him closely. She hadn't immediately noticed that the black shirt he was wearing wasn't one of the tactical shirts a lot of the Rapid Response members wore under their vests but now she definitely realized he was in civvies, despite it being an hour or so into his normal shift.

"Is this an "oh **** I screwed up" type of time-off or a "you're working yourself to death so leave my sight before you die at your desk" type of time-off?" she asked, knowing that with Nathan it was a toss up but hoping it was a case of the latter.

“I think recreating the incident on the holodeck is a good start,” Damian replied in response to Eliana’s suggestions, taking a moment to keep up with his caffeine intake in between speaking.

“But I don’t think it quite goes far enough. Part of what I see was the issue that day was that there were some critical elements missing from the equation. There was a question of command authority, and so there was confusion as to how to proceed. There should have been no question at all as to who was to lead the team toward a solution.”

Damian took a moment to soften his voice so the criticism didn’t seem too harsh.

“The freighter incident was purely a Security matter, and as the senior officer responding, that leadership role fell to you. I don’t think you failed at that, and I want to be clear here, I don’t blame you for the outcome. And there were certain aspects that, again, you couldn’t have had control over. However, even if you lead from the front, you’ve got to be able to stand back, make strategic and tactical decisions, and be able to relay those assessments to Command staff in a timely and regular manner. Deferring those communication responsibilities to someone else, particularly someone inexperienced, only results in more confusion.”

There was another brief pause from Coleman, whose face softened,

“As I read through various reports, including those from outside departments, I think it became clear that you had to juggle a lot. There just weren’t enough security officers with experience for you to free yourself enough from the situation to do those things I just spoke of. It wouldn’t be fair at all for me to level a poor assessment, because I believe you weren’t supported enough. Again, that falls to me.”

With a smile, he placed the PADD back on the table and leaned back in his chair.

“That is why, as of today, I’m giving you a Team Leader position McKenna. You’ve already been a leader in the Security Department for a long time now, but I think it is time to make it official. I’m giving you your own team. Your focus will be their focus. You’ll train them, and lead them, to act together in concert with you. So, when the time comes that we have another incident, you’ll have a group of people you can rely on so that you can be confident in taking a step back from the immediate situation.”

Leaning forward, Coleman turned the console on his desk toward Eliana, so that she could see the roster. His hand made a ‘go ahead’ sort of gesture, so that McKenna could feel free to scroll through the dossiers.

“That is a list of officers and enlisted that you can comprise your team from: specifically one Junior Officer, and four Non-commissioned. I did make some suggestions as to who I think would work well together, with each other and you... but the decision of who to choose from the list is ultimately yours. You’ll be in charge of their training and development. Along with that, you’ll also oversee the general administration of your team too; assessments, shift assignments, that sort of thing. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that having you take the reins of some staff frees up some of my workload, so this isn’t a purely noble appointment,” he chuckled.

Reaching for his coffee, Damian gave Eliana some time to review and consider things. It was an undertaking, what he was giving to her, but it wasn’t like McKenna wasn’t already doing those things. She was, just in a mostly unofficial capacity.

“If you have any questions, concerns, or any comments about the incident itself, now is the time.”

As Coleman replied to her positively in regards to her idea to recreate the incident as a training exercise. It went some way to validate some of the guilt that still lingered as a result of what had happened. Not that she sought complete redemption as Coleman reminded her as he continued. Of course she hadn't been perfect and it would of been foolish to think she could escape criticism.

But there it was even if Coleman was trying not to sound harsh. There had been confusion and having her authority questioned and she had no issue admitting her mistakes, even if she hadn't realised it fully at the time with everything else that was going on. She had her own lessons to learn from it, as she acknowledged Coleman, finally meeting his gaze as he spoke more about the freighter.

Hearing that he didn't think that she had failed and that she wasn't to blame for the outcome, did go some way to lessen how tough she was being on herself. Ready to admit that she made the wrong call but at the same time Beka had only been trying to help with them trying not to get everyone blown up. However Eli was listening to every word despite her own internal monologue, understanding that there was still some things that she had to work on.

When he then mentioned the other reports and how she had a lot to juggle he wasn't wrong and yet she had been determined not to fail. There was something that stuck with Eli as he admitted that there wasn't enough officers for her to take that step back and how he couldn't give a poor assessment because of her not having enough support.

Then came a surprise that she hadn't expected when Coleman smiled and told her that he was making her an official Team Leader. Taking a moment to actually believe what she was hearing as yes she had been doing that already but to know that he trusted her enough and had faith in her to do this, was a tad overwhelming at first. Recovering from the shock as he explained what it would entail and allowed her to look at the roster and scroll through potential members for her own team.

It would be a big undertaking but one that she knew that she could do as she nodded and began to form an idea of who she wanted. Nathan, Nat, Charlie Sanderson were just a couple of names that came to mind. Grinning slightly at how this and all of the administration that came with it would lessen his own workload. Not that it bothered her as she found the words to actually speak again.

"I look forward to this undertaking and having it being official. Yes it maybe challenging but as you've said, it's not like I haven't done this before and I appreciate you giving me this opportunity and having that faith in me" she replied as he then told her that this was also the time for her to talk about the incident.

"As for the incident, I know I don't need to take the full blame, but I realise that I could of done some things differently with what I could control. So lesson learned and I can take a lot from it, in order to grow and understand what I can change".

It wasn’t hard to see that Eliana was excited by the prospect of being a Team Leader. It would challenge her, in a good way, Damian knew. And it helped him out too. Coleman thought back and had to consider himself when he somehow managed to beat out other candidates to get the COS position on the Artemis, and the all the thoughts that went with it. Even though he was the same officer he had been before being given the role, just the title alone drove him to be even better than he was on the Atlanta. For Eliana, Damian hoped it would have the same effect. The extra responsibilities would engage her to think differently, while the position alone would hopefully bolster her.

“I am confident that you’ll find a way to learn from recent events. It will change how you approach future issues, and the training that you’ll come up with will share that knowledge with others. That’s how we grow as a Department, learning from one another,” there was a genuine smile on Damian’s face as he leaned forward.

“I’ve gone ahead and had your schedule cleared for the day, and booked one of the Offices to work from for the next while. Don’t worry about duty patrols or anything like that, just focus on putting your team together and figuring out the next couple of months for them and you. This isn’t an idle assignment. I expect to see preliminary assessments, and to be invited to audit training sessions. It is important to get a jump on all of this, because the lull we’ve had won’t last for long.”

With a nod, he returned more deeply into his seat, while his right hand grasped the mug and brought it back up to his lips. Damian was pleased to see that Eliana was ready for the assignment, and that happiness spread across the rest of his features. Though, it was just the start of some shifts he wanted to make. In the end, he hoped that all of his choices would make for a stronger Department; something that he could be proud of.

“Alright McKenna, if there is nothing else… feel free to pop in through the week if you have any questions.”

Eli's mind was awash with ideas and there had definitely been a change in her demeanor too. Coming in here there was a lot of nerves, anxiety and guilt but as the conversation progressed and Coleman had given her that promotion of sorts, that had virtually diminished. She could actually be excited about having her own team and having that extra responsibility before Coleman further bolstered that feeling by what he said next.

To hear that he was confident that she could learn helped immensely and yes deep down, she knew that she had it in her. But to get that vote of confidence from the Chief, well that made all the difference. Besides he was right, as that's what she wanted too, to grow and learn and to do everything she could to strengthen the department.

"Thank you, just hearing that helps a lot and I agree, that's the important thing to remember, especially growth".

When he then informed her that he had cleared her schedule and set up one of the offices for her. Eli couldn't help but smile at the thought of doing something different and whilst she would miss her usual routine for today at least, welcomed the prospect of what he wanted to do and his expectations.

She wasn't going to let him, herself or her chosen team down and knew that there was going to be some difficult choices to make. As Coleman then brought the conservation to and end. Eli looked towards him and nodded before speaking. " I understand what's expected of me and I won't let you down. I'll definitely remember that should I need to pop in and thank you again Chief, for everything especially your belief in me.. oh and the coffee too".

Admission made and not wanting to get emotional about it all, Eli smiled again and got to her feet, ready to leave.

" I understand what's expected of me and I won't let you down. I'll definitely remember that should I need to pop in and thank you again Chief, for everything especially your belief in me…”

A rather large, reassuring smile, drew up onto Damian’s lips. The ball was squarely in Eliana’s court now, and Coleman put trust in his instincts that this is what she needed to expand on herself. The opportunity to teach others was a big factor. An officer with as much experience as McKenna, and seen half the things she had, would have a lot to impart upon the more… ‘green’ types. But it wasn’t just the knowledge that others got. It would serve for Eliana to look at what she knows. To realize just how much she knows. And then to have to manipulate all of that, chew it up in the brain, and regurgitate it to others. Teaching, in the beginning, was often about learning for the instructor as much as it was for students, or so Damian thought. It was a big chance for Eliana to learn about herself, and trust in the things that she did know.

“…oh and the coffee too.”

That made Damian chuckle just a little.

“Of course,” he said as he began to rise from his seat in tandem with Eliana, “this Department runs on the stuff. Plus, it is good to talk things out over a beverage; something I hope to do more often with people.”

Walking forward to the side of his desk, he gave a final glance to Eliana.

“Like I said, you need anything, you let me know. Now, I’m going to replicate some more coffee for my next guest. If you happen to see Miss Claymore out in the lobby area, please let her in. I told her my door was open, but also that I was meeting with you first thing.”

There was another smile that Damian gave Eliana, before making motions toward the replicator, where he would indeed make more coffee… and another drink too.

"I mean I always said you can take the girl out of the honkytonk but you can't take the honkytonk out of the girl...”

The phrase made Nathan’s brain do a barrel-roll, and a sort of stupid smile managed to wedge its way onto his face. It amazed him that Tyra still managed, despite becoming a Star Fleet Captain and even a de-facto Fleet Commander as an Expedition leader, to not lose her roots. While he had no doubt that Tyra could be the ‘belle of the ball’ so-to-speak, Crawford did strike him as much more the sort of self-reliant outrider-explorer. Though, he did have to remind himself that there was another, softer side to her too; one that he somehow managed benefit from.

"Nathan... I'm not sure I need your lips that close to my ***…”

A brief wash of worry was quickly dispelled by Tyra’s grin, and Nathan let out a little bit of breath he hadn’t known he was holding onto. Then, when he heard her laugh and relax against the booth, it put him back into his initial casualness and he chuckled with her. He continued to listen to Tyra even as he considered a few more things in his mind. Specifically, he was happy to realize that it was getting easier to talk to the Captain.

Perhaps, finally, I’m making a connection and moving past my awkward start?

It was Crawford’s turn to show a bit of worry at his comment regarding forced-relaxation. In fact, Nathan found it almost comical to see the heights that Tyra’s eyebrows could reach. Though, he managed to hide his amusement even as she spoke. He didn’t interrupt her, but Ramius was already shaking his head and raising his hands up slightly in a mea culpa sort of gesture.

“Definitely the latter. I’ve been pulling doubles for a couple of weeks now. The triggering event was probably when I was covering the front desk for Rarona, and the Chief left for the day. Annnnnnd I might have still been there when he came back the next morning?” there was a bit of a cheesy grin that formed on Nathan’s face, but it faded as he dropped his eyes for a moment.

You’ve never not been honest with Tyra yet, Nathan. Might as well not stop now.

Finding some courage to continue, he spoke, those the volume of his voice dropped,

“I’m still hurting. It’s silly, I know. I should really get over it already, but I still have feelings for… Michelle,” the mention of her name still struck him, and he bit his tongue a bit in response.

Finally, his brought his eyes back up to look to Tyra, and in that moment he might have looked a kicked puppy.

“I thought I could escape it. Be able to bury and move past it. I started dating Beka Sydesh, which I now realize was unwise on my part. Not because Beka isn’t a good person. It was my fault entirely. People warn others about having rebound relationships, and now I know why. It wasn’t fair at all to Beka, to spend time with her, when I still have feelings for another woman.”

Nathan sighed.

“I’m starting to sound like a broken record,” he laughed at himself a bit, but there was still the hint of a pained expression around his eyes especially.

“I’m just trying to spend energy doing productive things, instead of spinning wheels in my head.”

It was gratifying to see that large reassuring smile on Coleman's face once Eli had finished speaking. Not to mention the chuckle that she received in regard to her coffee comment before he copied Eli and responded to her. He was right again on both counts with how the department ran on the delicious caffeine filled nectar and how it was good to talk over a cup of it. Eli also didn't doubt that the Chief would be able to achieve his goal of talking more with his staff.

"That it does and agreed, I've felt better already for it and I've got a good feeling that you'll get to do that".

As the time for farewells rushed ever near, Eli smiled as Coleman gave her a final glance. Reiterating what he said about letting him know if she ever needed anything before mentioning who he was due to see next. "I will and no problem I'll send her in" she replied mainly to acknowledge his request to send Juice in, if she was outside.

With her dismissed as Coleman went to the replicator. Eli exited the office and with no immediate sign of Juice, the Lieutenant left a message with one of the non comms and made her way to what would be her office for the foreseeable future.

“Definitely the latter. I’ve been pulling doubles for a couple of weeks now. The triggering event was probably when I was covering the front desk for Rarona, and the Chief left for the day. Annnnnnd I might have still been there when he came back the next morning?” Tyra offered a sympathetic wince, having been both the workaholic officer and the exasperated department head in that particular scenario.

While Tyra would admit to there being a soft spot for Nathan, likely because she saw a lot of herself in him whether she liked it or not, she felt that most independent parties would feel sympathy for Nathan. Yes, most of his early woes had been of his own creation but he had come leaps and bounds to overcome those self-inflicted wounds. However, despite all that effort, he seemed to not be able to catch a break. In truth, Tyra felt that, in the long-run, Nathan had likely dodged a bullet with Price but that didn't negate the hurt he was feeling or the that those hurts could fester to the point of permanent scarring on the soul.

“I’m just trying to spend energy doing productive things, instead of spinning wheels in my head.”

The redhead was quiet for a minute. It would have been easy to tell him what she had been told on different occasions, that time healed all wounds, but in her experience, time only healed wounds if you made peace with it and allowed it. It didn't magically heal wounds that you kept picking at or you kept running from or that you kept trying to drown with whiskey or that you kept trying to beat back physically. In fact, time's healing powers were incredibly fickle in her experience.

"Have you thought that, maybe, you're just prolonging the good-bye by trying to stay busy instead of breaking bread with your feelings?" she asked gently, though it was obvious that she wasn't expecting an answer.

"I've had a lot of experience with broken hearts and a lot of experience with coping with them, both effectively and very ineffectively. You loved her and with love comes pain. There's no shame in that and anyone who tells you otherwise is a damn fool. Or hasn't done much living of their own," she shrugged as if it wasn't something she was too concerned with. Then again, Tyra rarely did seem worried about the opinions of others but that hadn't always been the case.

"I'm in no position to lecture you on the dangers of trying to overwork yourself through heartbreak, or frankly, rebound your way through heartbreak either, as I probably hold black belts in overworking, dating, drinking and punching my way through heartbreak and trauma but what I can tell you is that if you let that hurt fester on the edge of your subconscious, all you're doing is opening yourself up to much greater problems down the road. Eventually, you'll find a trauma that you can't bury under work and it'll combine with everything else to eat you. And then, you'll realize that it would have been so much easier to face that initial pain than let it build and combine into a legitimate monster."

"But it probably seems easy for me to tell you that, hm? And like a legitimate mountain to consider undertaking," she stated simply, as if she knew from experience.

The silence between them was loud, and Nathan could hear his own blood pumping through his veins; this time it wasn’t for the usual reasons. Trouble. It was an apt nickname. And that was what Ramius was usually in whenever he spoke with Tyra, though that reality was changing too. As Nathan thought about it just a bit more, it was a downward trend, as he hadn’t caught flak from the Captain in some time. Though it wasn’t the normal relationship between two people who worked on the same ship, and probably not quite like what other people experienced in terms of knowing their Captain either. Theirs was a complicated affiliation, and what Crawford saw in Ramius, Nathan didn’t know. Whatever it was, though, it had saved his ***. And now, it would serve to help him again in trying to wrangle his own demons.

Listening as Tyra’s voice broke the quiet, it was a different tone than usual; softer, though still controlled. It made sense, what she was saying. And it was sensible. In fact, it triggered what would be a full déjà vu moment as she continued. Though, the change in wording and perspective from how Ben had posited things helped to make everything a little clearer to Nathan. Or, at least, easier to digest the wisdom.

Though, as she continued, Nathan found it harder to maintain the tough face that he was perpetually putting on for the world. His expression especially softened as she used the word ‘loved’. He could have taken issue with the fact that Tyra had used past tense to describe his feelings for Chell. But… it wasn’t wrong either. His feelings were changing, and how he had loved was different than how he was still in love in that moment. There were plenty of emotions that encircled his heart, many of which had never been there when thinking of the person he had lost. Plus, to judge word-tense when someone was trying to be helpful would be pedantic, he knew.

What he appreciated more, was that Tyra didn’t deprecate what he was going through. And he laughed at her humor regarding her martial prowess in dealing with heartbreak and trauma. There were more than enough people who felt that Nathan should have moved past things, and hearing the acceptance, particularly from the Captain, was much needed validation for him. It was almost too much, and he stifled an emotional sigh.

"But it probably seems easy for me to tell you that, hm? And like a legitimate mountain to consider undertaking,” the last bit was a statement from the tone and pitch of her voice. It wasn’t a question to him, that it might feel like a mountain to climb. Instead, she knew it was.

“Yeah,” he replied after a moment of his own silence.

“I’ve just, never been in this position before. I mean, I’ve dated before. I’ve loved before. But this. This was different in some way that I can’t fully articulate.”

Nathan took a deep breath in, and then leaned even more heavily on the booth-edge.

“If someone had asked me a year ago, if I knew what love was, the answer would be significantly different than what I’d give now. I mean, some of it would be the same. But… anyway. It doesn’t matter,” he chuckled somewhat nervously as he realized his babbling. Reflexively, Nathan started rubbing his left arm.

“Dealing with it hurts a lot more than I’d care to admit to anyone. Except Ben. And you, now, I guess,” another nervous chuckle escaped him.

“It isn’t like I’m trying to escape the reality of everything. I’m just trying to… divide everything up into smaller, easier to deal with chunks, instead of having these huge waves crushing me. At least, that is what I’m telling myself.”

There was a brief pause, his eyes staring off,

“I never really thought how hard it would be. I’ve had my own trials and tribulations. I’ve had those aplenty,” an almost hidden grimace crossed his face before he continued, “I never thought a breakup could hurt like it has. Like it does. Just rips your guts out and feeds it back to you. Grabs your heart and makes it beat to a different tune. And then I feel like such a fool, for letting myself get so caught up in all of it that I couldn’t see the endgame. It made me question myself again.”

“And I know I shouldn’t blame myself. Or, at least, not just myself. It takes two to make a relationship work. And somehow something got lost in translation. I just didn’t see how my work… or the danger inherent in my chosen line-of-duty, affected her. I feel like I should have seen it. There were plenty of times before the icy hell to recognize her feelings on it all. I was just blinded I guess. Seems kinda fatalist though, to say it all like that. As though what ended up happening probably couldn’t have been avoided in the end anyway…”

Nathan’s voice trailed off, before he straightened and his eyes suddenly darted to met Tyra’s gaze; as though an epiphany struck him.

“This, what I’m going through, it won’t affect my work. I promise. I’m not going to lie to you and tell that I’m going to stop working so hard. I’ll slow down a little maybe, but I can’t stop now. Not when I feel like I’ve been making a lot of progress and learning a lot of new things, despite where I’m at… you know… ah, emotionally.”

Finally, his expression lightened, and his right hand moved from his arm to rub his neck before he spoke again; Nathan’s tone turning somewhat sheepish.

“Maybe, I could… you… we… if it wasn’t an imposition,” he stumbled but collected himself, “maybe I could talk to you more? Just to… talk? I know you are incredibly busy but… I trust you and Ben. More than I’ve probably ever trusted anyone else. And even though you are my Captain…”

There was a lingering statement that was dancing on his tongue, caught by his consciousness and whether or not he should say it,

“…I don’t know, it just feels like something has changed. I don’t just feel like I can talk to you, but that I should talk to you, about a lot of things. Does that sound weird?”

There had been numerous times in her dealings with Nathan where the similarities had just smacked her in the face. From his stupidly idealistic view of how things should have been to his equally stupid view of duty to his foolish need to do what he felt was right, even if he didn't have all of the crucial details, her initial impression of him had been like looking into a displaced mirror of a tiny segment of her life. Because unlike Nathan, she had had someone to knock all of that stupidity and all of that foolishness right out of her head before it dragged her down the path that he had stumbled down. Partially, she thought that might be part of the reason for her soft spot for him, a desire to save him from that fate while knowing that, as captain, she wasn't in a position to truly save him like a true mentor could and should.

Right that moment though, she felt like the mirror was making another appearance. She'd stood exactly where he was standing with her heart entirely shredded and no idea of how to fix it.  She'd been so madly in love with Rexar and he'd left without a word, sending her a message almost a week after just leaving that did nothing to truly explain things. There had never been closure and for someone like her, that was more maddening than being left.

And lord, had she made a mess of the comeback from that rock bottom moment, which had led her further into the second issue at hand. Not only was there a broken heart at play but there were questions that only someone walking their path would encounter, about whether it was fair to allow someone to love them when they were in such a dangerous line of work, whether anyone would be willing to accept the baggage that came with them, and whether there was a way to balance it all.

“…I don’t know, it just feels like something has changed. I don’t just feel like I can talk to you, but that I should talk to you, about a lot of things. Does that sound weird?”

"No, not at all. My door's always open," she said simply, pausing to weigh what to say next. Her blue eyes flickered down the range before her decision was seemingly punctuated by a sigh.

"I... I fell head over heels in love shortly after becoming Chief of Security for the Gettysburg. I thought he was the love of my life but he left without much of an explanation. In hindsight, I'm not sure it would have survived the war and all of the **** I was asked to do in that Hellhole but at that time, it destroyed me. It sucked and while someone might say that it made me who I am today, I really just think it left me with more baggage to overcome and more obstacles to climb over to get where I am today with a healthy career and relationship and less destructive tendencies. If I can help you avoid even one of the many holes I fell into in the aftermath, maybe it was worth it," she answered, her expression self-deprecating.

"And those pitfalls are not limited to matters of the heart. I'm pretty sure I have literally mapped out every damn one that's possible to find while wearing that damn uniform. Fortunately, though, unless the Cardassians or the Romulans decide to be confrontational ******** again, you shouldn't be in danger of seeing half of them." The statement was punctuated with an almost wolf-ish grin.

Then, her expression softened into a more serious expression. "For what it's worth, I'm not worried about Ensign Ramius. He's been a pain in my *** but he's showing signs of growth and maturity that suggest he might be up for some bigger responsibilities soon. I'm worried about Nathan and making sure Nathan doesn't get overshadowed or pushed into a corner to avoid dealing with things or because it's just easier that way. It's easy to let that uniform swallow up everything in its path until you realize you're only leaving the office to sleep and haven't spoken to a soul outside of the office."

Watching Tyra take a moment, her gaze tracking down the range, and hearing the sigh… Nathan could have sworn that he understood her. It was as if the sigh was a language, full of information and emotion more than any polysyllabic word could ever contain. It was only when Tyra started to speak that he realized that they, both her and he, really did understand each other.

It was unexpected, to hear her open-up.

Again, he had to remind himself.

There, amongst the empty booths of the range, it wasn’t the first instance she gave a piece of her story to Nathan. It did strike him. And as he thought about it, he felt sheepish. Of course Tyra had felt something similar. His situation wasn’t an exclusive one; heartache was near universal. However, it resonated fiercely within him. Tyra had been ‘left holding the bag’ too, abandoned without much, if any, explanation. Then, she added that the relationship likely wouldn’t have survived the dredges of war it would have had to suffer made Nathan nod instinctively. It would take a special kind of person to be able to survive the anxiety that their role would inflict upon those that loved them. Nathan had a thought to ask about her relationship with the Admiral, and how that differed from her previous relationships. But, instead, he held back and continued to listen.

"For what it's worth, I'm not worried about Ensign Ramius. He's been a pain in my *** but he's showing signs of growth and maturity…”

The statements caused Nathan’s face to screw up in a mess of competing emotions. First a bit of a smile, with the barest hint of a grin. It morphed quickly though with a wave of humility, before rebounding into another guarded smile. He tried, after those rapid changes, to temper his reactions, though it didn’t work; his face continued to ebb and flow with the context of Tyra’s words.

“I’m happy to hear that Ensign Ramius is making inroads,” there was mirth in his voice as he spoke. Yet, his eyes hinted that he didn’t just take her words at face-value. Nathan’s eyes showed determination at the subtext, in that he intended to continue growing and maturing out of his rough fledgling phase.

“And he isn’t going to stop growing. The path he’s been down was probably the hardest way to learn what he needed to, but he has learned from it all. Even if it still stings to think about sometimes,” there was the slightest bit of a wince, but it disappeared.

“Though, that is good too, so that I never forget those lessons. Even saying that, I know there is more to learn too. I’m taking things a little more slowly, evaluating situations more carefully, and internalizing what the outcomes of actions might be. It is a process for someone that likes to react impulsively,” another mini-grimace rolled along his lips.

“As for Nathan… I think he’ll be okay. Talking to Ben was good. But now, talking to you, things are starting to make even more sense. I’m understanding more of what he was trying to tell me. And, I have to thank you for telling me what you went through; it makes me feel less… isolated? I mean, just about everyone gets their heart broken. But the details matter. Context and circumstances can make things entirely different…”

Then, he found himself standing up straight and changing the subject; leaving the rest of his thought unsaid.

“I can’t lie to you, and say that I won’t keep working hard or pushing myself to my limits. That’s who I am, whether or not I have something to brood over,” the punctuation was an exhale stopped from being a full chuckle.

“But this has helped. You have helped… again, like you always do for me. I’m grateful. So, thank you.”

“Don’t suppose I can help you at all? I owe you a significant amount of sizeable favors, so, I’ll even eat a bowlful of mashed leola root for you if I have to,” Nathan grimace-grinned as his hand came up to his stomach in protest to his oath.

The answer bubbled up faster than she had expected but she managed to catch it before it rolled off her tongue. As well meaning and deserved as it was, now wasn't the time to request that Nathan consider changing his type from difficult medical officers with questionable qualities and decision making skills for the sake of everyone around him. Oh, it was true that he seemed to have a type and it was quite likely a type that would lead to nothing but heart break. However, no one reacted well to having salt poured into their still opened wound so that was something to discuss during a later conversation, when he was a little more receptive to the idea that maybe he hadn't been the only problem in the equation. She'd have to consider how long it had taken her to reach a point where Steve telling her that her taste in men was **** had actually become helpful, instead of just irritating, and she had a feeling it had taken longer than she'd like to admit.

Because she'd caught the words, there was a pause in her answering. She'd looked down the shooting lane again, as if considering the offer, before looking back at him. "What you can do for me is just keep proving that I was right to give you a second chance," she stated simply, though she knew that didn't entirely make sense as he had and was still proving her right.

She made a tiny little clicking noise with her tongue, one that those closest to her would know was one of her "thinking" noises. Her blue eyes shifted back to look at Nathan and they had lost some of their softness in favor of the sharpness they usually held.

"I actually went out on a tiny limb for you this week -- I put in the paperwork requesting that you get another pip. I'm not telling you this because I want you to feel indebted or any nonsense like that. I'm telling you because in the very unlikely situation that they tell me to pound sand on the request, I want you to know that I think you earned it. You have proven that you are more than the sum of your very, very terrible first impressions. You were willing to make the sacrifice that everyone says they're willing to make but few actually are when the cards are all down. That shouldn't be taken for granted. You also fulfilled your assigned duties, even when they weren't glamorous and involved more leola root than any assignment ever should."

"So... what you can do for me is when you get that pip act surprised and please, for the love of God, do not make me eat crow over this."

The pause had Nathan wondering what exactly it was that Tyra was thinking about. Trying to read her body language was harder than it was for others, and he didn’t know why. He did consider that there might be a bit of a mental block. That consideration had more merit when he took into account his history with her too. Still, Nathan waited, keeping his eyes on Tyra’s face even as she turned to look down the lane. Then, when her ice-blue gaze returned, he had to stop himself from tilting his head like a puppy.

"What you can do for me is just keep proving that I was right to give you a second chance.”

That was a lot of thinking for a sentence…

There was more behind her words. Nathan didn’t try to imagine too broadly what it might have been that she was considering, as it could have been quite a bit. And Ramius knew all too well how close his balls had been to the blade, and he did work hard to try and ensure that the chance she had given him wasn’t wasted energy or effort, for her or the crew.

The click of her tongue brought him back to focusing on her face, and specifically her eyes as she continued.

"I actually went out on a tiny limb for you this week -- I put in the paperwork requesting that you get another pip…”

Nathan’s jaw dropped. It was almost as if he was winded too as his lungs refused, for a couple moments, to even fill. It wasn’t something he had been expecting at all, even with his work during the fight against the incredibly odd, but still very Borg-like, Borg.

Then, it was hard listening for him. The praise seemed like too much for something that he would have normally done regardless of the situation. It didn’t even feel like a drop in the bucket compared to the sand he needed to fill the holes he’d dug many months before. Though, Nathan did have to consider that the side he had intended to show initially was finally rising above the dark horizon of where he had started. Out of all the people on the ship though, he was glad that Tyra was seeing more of what he considered his true self.

Or is it my true self? Where I started and where I am, are two very different Nathans. I mean, old Nathan would have signed up for the Sphere mission too. But there have been changes, subtle though they might be. Whatever has changed, it seems Tyra has taken notice. More notice than maybe I’ve even given myself credit for.

“…You also fulfilled your assigned duties, even when they weren't glamorous and involved more leola root than any assignment ever should."

At that, Nathan let out a chuckle.

“That is the Talaxian’s real weapon, isn’t it?” there was a cheeky grin on his face, but it melted away as Tyra continued.

"So... what you can do for me is when you get that pip act surprised and please, for the love of God, do not make me eat crow over this."

“I am surprised. And trust me, I’ll still be surprised if it does come in,” the mirth was gone, and his voice was more solemn than anything else.

“More than anything though, I am committed to proving myself, and that won’t ever stop. It is something I’ll keep doing until I retire from the Fleet probably. The best version of Nathan is the one that questions himself and doesn’t react off impulse for everything. Obviously, there are instances where reflex isn’t just needed, but life-saving. But, for the other stuff, where I do get a chance to think about my actions. Those are the moments where I still plan to keep my pledge to you, Mihar, and technically Logan too.”

There was a longer than normal pause from Nathan, as his eyes drifted to the floor while his mind considered something.

“I’d make the same choice again too,” he looked up into Tyra’s eyes, “with the Sphere, even if it meant all this hurt again. I’ll just have to be prudently careful and make sure that anyone who wants to get into a relationship with a Security officer knows what they are signing up for upfront.”

Taking a breath in, a smile finally broke the seriousness in his tone,

“And I’ll have to make sure that I’m ready for such a relationship too. Maybe extend that careful consideration I’m using for professional situations into personal life too,” Nathan chuckled again.

“Thank you, Tyra. For… well, everything.”

Changing gears, there was a smirk on his face. He knew for a fact what he was about to propose would likely mean getting humiliated at the hands of the red-head. However, he couldn’t keep his competitiveness at bay any longer.

“So. How about some friendly competition? I’ve been putting in a lot of range time, and I’m pretty sure I can at least match you with the pistol. But my rifle marksmanship has been consistent too,” he winked as the grin widened.

“Could also put a bottle of bourbon on the line?”

I’m probably going to owe her that bottle, but if I did manage to squeak out ahead, she’s got way better bottles of bourbon than I could ever buy…

Ever since she had arrived for her scheduled shift, a well rested Eliana could be found tucked away at one of the bullpen consoles. A freshly brewed mug of coffee sat to the side of her, not that it stayed in one position for very long as she took warming mouthfuls, of the delicious nectar.

Considering that she'd actually gotten a decent night's sleep now that William had stopped teething, nothing could stop her from partaking on her usual hit of caffeine. The slight buzz helping her to focus on reviewing the last training exercise that she had put herself and her team through.

With each one, the Team Leader could see the improvements that they were making, but even if they did achieve everything, there was always room to do more. No one was completely perfect and that included her, yet they were becoming more efficient in working as one. That was the difference and what she had been learning from each individual. Their combined skills, strengths and weaknesses coming together until they knew what worked and what didn't.

Eliana was extremely proud at seeing that, of making sure that no one was left behind and just as importantly have the freedom to tell her where she had gone wrong. No matter what the situation was and if someone messed up, it fell on her, so it was important to at least own up, learn from it and move on.

Reaching for the coffee mug again, Eli took another generous sip, then returned to the screen. Her mind firmly on the replay, pausing occasionally to make notes, before moving on to the next part.

While Tyra didn't exactly consider herself to be predictable, there was still a level of pleasure to be had at catching people drastically off guard and from Nathan's reaction, her news was likely the last thing he had expected to hear anytime soon. Admittedly, he was likely still feeling fortunate to have dug himself out of midshipman after some of his missteps; Hell, in the beginning, she had been amazed that he still even had a uniform to slap on. If he was truly like she had been when she still had a touch of idealism and naivety, he likely felt he was being rewarded for doing something any officer would have done but experience had taught her otherwise -- idealism and duty didn't always override someone's desire to survive at all costs, including the cost of one's brethren.

“I’d make the same choice again too,” he looked up into Tyra’s eyes, “with the Sphere, even if it meant all this hurt again. I’ll just have to be prudently careful and make sure that anyone who wants to get into a relationship with a Security officer knows what they are signing up for upfront.”

Tyra offered a wry smile. "That does tend to make things a little less bumpy..."

“And I’ll have to make sure that I’m ready for such a relationship too. Maybe extend that careful consideration I’m using for professional situations into personal life too,” he added, drawing out a nod of agreement from her.

The career progression of a security officer could be a lonely road to walk but it was only a slippery slope away from heartbreak caused by ill fitted band-aids for that loneliness. There was a balance to be found but typically only after a couple of slides down the slope and resets into the forest of loneliness. She could tell him what to do but only he could find that balance.

“Thank you, Tyra. For… well, everything.”

She waved it away with a flick of her wrists. "You earned it and there's nothing more to it."

“So. How about some friendly competition? I’ve been putting in a lot of range time, and I’m pretty sure I can at least match you with the pistol. But my rifle marksmanship has been consistent too,” he winked as the grin widened.

“Could also put a bottle of bourbon on the line?” He quickly added.

She hummed slightly, blue eyes shifting to regard her target from earlier. Her arms weren't shaking as much as they had been immediately after her work out and even if they had been, she knew she always rose to the occasion when it came to a challenge or competition. Her competitive nature in her youth had bordered on being a flaw but she had managed to channel that focus into useful energy, though it occasionally reared its ugly head in a less than productive manner.

"The last guy to challenge me to a shooting competition owes me the naming rights for his firstborn but I think bourbon is a safer bet for the sake of any of your future progeny," she answered with a wink and a grin as she turned back to her bay to pick up her faithful side kick.

Having been summoned first thing in the morning to Coleman’s office, there was some hesitancy that loomed in the back on Nathan’s mind. Though he hadn’t really done anything wrong that he could think of, being ‘called into the office’ never seemed like a good thing to Ramius. Perhaps it was because of his past. Or perhaps everyone felt some apprehension when told ‘we have to talk’. Either way, it left a nest of snakes in Nathan’s stomach, and they writhed around as he stepped into the Security Complex foyer.

There was some hustle and bustle in the Complex, as it looked like most teams and patrols were gearing up. Though the one person Nathan had expected to see in the dispatch area wasn’t around at all.

I wonder where Ziggy is? Usually she’s here first thing, ready to give me a hard time about… well, she doesn’t care what she bugs me about, she just bugs me.

A sort of curious look was accented with an uncertain frown regarding Zh’kol’s absence. However, Nathan had to shake the feeling loose to focus on his own current issues. With a quick march, the officer headed further in, nodding to others as he passed them by.

Upon arriving to the Chief’s office, Nathan straightened his tunic and stood as upright as he possibly could. Then, just as his hand reached out to hit the chime on the console, the doors slid open suddenly. It took Nathan off-guard, though the shock only showed in how fast his arm retreated back to his side. There, standing in front of him, was the Andorian Petty Officer. It seemed Ziggy was found, alleviating any concern Ramius had had about her. Though, it didn’t eliminate his curiosity.

Wonder what they just finished up talking about?

“Hey Trouble,” Zh’kol teased with a whisper, inviting him in with a wave of her arm.

Trouble? Ah ****…

“Come in Nathan, have a seat. Though, I suppose I should be calling you Lieutenant now,” Damian greeted Ramius warmly, gesturing to one of the seats across from his desk.

“Thank you sir, but I’m not a full lieutenant at all. Even if I ever get to that rank, I think it’d be odd to hear you call me that.”

Coleman watched as Ramius crossed over and found a seat, while Tassa meandered her way back over and sat next to the young man. Obviously, Ziggy had said something to the man in the doorway, and whatever it was had put Nathan on edge by the looks of things. Damian could only smile at that. It made him happy to see that people in the Department were good with each other, as a little teasing now and then made levity when their jobs often were anything but lighthearted. It was often why Security officers tended toward darker humor; the kind of stuff that others in Star Fleet might find distasteful.

“Can I get you anything? There is coffee in the carafe on my desk here, or I can replicate you something?”

“Coffee is fine sir, thank you. May I?”

Damian smiled and nodded,

“Of course, help yourself to a cup. While you pour, I’ll kick things off.”

Picking up a PADD, the only one on his side of the desk, Coleman took a moment to reacquaint himself with the information contain within. His pause also gave Ramius the time needed to pour a cup, and take the first sip.

Caffiene and Dilithium. What a modern space faring Fleet needs to operate.

“I was doing a review with Petty Officer Zh’kol here, taking a look at shifts and such, seeing how many hours personnel were putting in. Trying to determine if changes were needed. Of course, I wasn’t surprised to see your name pop up near the top of hours worked, still. Now, before you interrupt and defend yourself, cause I know you want to, I will admit that you’ve at least reduced how much you have been working significantly since our last chat.”

“However,” Ziggy stepped in, “when looking at your working hours, and combining them with the training hours you’ve been putting in…”

Damian nodded and finished Zh’kol sentence,

“…you are still on par with where you were before. You’ve just traded that time from actual shift hours, to training hours.”

The color in Nathan’s face seemed to drain away at the revelation that he’d been caught out.

“Now, originally, I warned you that I would take other measures if you didn’t at least try to balance your work-life situation. But when I saw this, and then Ziggy ran the numbers to confirm, I have to say I was slightly impressed with how you found a bit of a loophole in how I structured my initial warning. After all, I was pretty specific about reducing your shift-hours worked, and didn’t say anything about training, did I?”

Here, Coleman paused. Normally, if he actually was upset with someone, he’d let them dig their own hole. This time though, he was just interested in what Nathan had to say for himself.

“Sir,” the young man started, “I can explain. I just… I can see how the numbers don’t look good, I’m sure. But I thought I was reducing my hours… I must have gotten carried away again.”

Damian waved his hand and smiled.

“Ramius, listen. I get it, I do. You want to improve yourself. You are trying to follow the rules and the guidance that I’ve set out for you. But, and let’s both be honest with one another: you are still trying to avoid being alone. You need to give yourself time to rest in between everything. If you are always going full bore, how do I know that you’ll be properly rested when it comes time to call upon you for a mission? The only answer to that is that you need more supervision.”

The look that fell upon Nathan’s face made Damian feel bad for a moment. It was the exact expression that Crawford had mentioned to Damian, about how the ex-Ensign had the exact look of a hurt puppy absolutely on lock.

“The only answer to that is putting you on a new team. Now, I had considered letting you join McKenna’s team, but you two have history, and are close. That won’t work out in the long term, I think. Plus, if you are interested in so much training, I might as well give you a proper focus for all of that desire for knowledge.”

“According to Zh’kol and information I’ve gathered from other sources, there was a specialized team on the Gettysburg that focused on dangerous and high-risk situations. After what happened on the Talaxian Asteroid Colony, I have revived that initiative, and created two Special Reaction Teams for the Artemis…”

Damian took a moment to pause, while Nathan was taking another sip from his coffee cup, as Coleman didn’t feel like getting covered in the stuff if the man took a spit-take.

“…and I’ve decided to give you a chance to join one of those teams. From now on, you’ll report to the SRT as a trainee. You’ve been removed from standard duty patrols so you can participate in all SRT meetings and training exercises. Ziggy,” he nodded to the Andorian who picked up where he left off.

“You’ll be expected to be on-call in off-duty hours in case a call comes in,” Zh’kol pulled a PADD from where she sat, and handed it to Nathan, “and you’ve now been authorized to access special weapons from the Armory, and to carry them during duty shifts and away missions.”

“We don’t have a lot of the fancy stuff that the Rapid Response Team did,” Damian took back over.

“But I have the expectation that the SRT will be the best trained teams: have the best scores on all certifications in both energy and ballistics, and will use every trick in the book when it comes to tactics. Do you have any questions?”

=== COS Office ===

Stuck with a perpetually confused look on his face, Nathan stared at Lieutenant Coleman. Then, his head bounced to Ziggy who wore a tiny grin, before returning to the Chief. While he understood what was happening, he could scarcely believe it. Ever since being assigned to the Gettysburg, Nathan had hoped to be a part of the Rapid Response Team. However, his missteps proved fatal to his dreams, and the decommissioning of the venerable Cruiser was the final nail in that particular coffin. As he sat in his chair, he realized he was being presented with another chance.

A fast stream of thoughts, mixed with emotions and concerns, fired like a gatling gun through his neurons. Was he ready for the assignment? Nathan did consider that his work aboard the Megasphere might have at least proven himself capable of the courage for dangerous work. Or was it just to keep a better eye on him? Tyra had kept Nathan close at hand during the last mission, he reflected as well. Despite all of the internal fighting and dissonance, however, there was a huge welling of excitement. That, was what Nathan couldn’t deny himself.

This is just another chance to continue to prove myself. A risky chance it might be, but a calculated choice for a venture all the same. I can’t say no to something like this. Well, it isn’t as though Chief Coleman posited the position as an offer; it is more of a command it seems. But this is my chance to seize an opportunity I thought would be closed to me!

“Nathan?” Ziggy said softly, interrupting his stream of consciousness.

“Yeah, I mean, yes. Yes sir. I’m… happy to have the chance sir,” Nathan replied to Coleman, before giving a quick, sheepish grin to Zh’kol.

“I guess that means you don’t have any questions then?” Coleman was smiling, probably at seeing the jubilant enthusiasm from a usually broody Ramius.

“No, no sir,” the words were eager, and Nathan clasped his hands together to kept from propelling himself out of his chair.

“Good. You’ll have the first-half of your shift to yourself, in order to grab your gear and orient yourself to your new schedule. Then you’ll report to Lieutenant Junior Grade Praasn, who is your Team Leader for SRT Two. Good luck Nathan. Dismissed.”

“Yes sir. Thank you, sir,” there was a big smile on Nathan’s face as he eagerly left his chair, turning only for a moment to give a little wave to Ziggy.

As he exited the Chief’s office, Ramius contained his giddiness, strolling over to the Lounge to grab a glass of water. It was less because he was thirsty, and more to steady himself; running around like a lunatic would be a bad look even if he was ecstatic.

“Water, ice cold, tall glass.”

The replicator whirred and just finished as his hand went reaching in. Now, with a liquid in hand, he was forced to focus. His movements slowed, and Nathan managed to take a little sip before moving over to one of the chairs to sit.

I’ve got so much to do! Gotta check the schedule. Get the gear. Do a little research, the list continued, and he felt like racing to get it all done, even though it was still quite early in his shift.

As fast as he had sat, Nathan got back up. He was about to speed off out of the Lounge, but decided first to finish his drink. A quick hop over to the replicator to dematerialize the glass was the only other diversion before he sought out a spare PADD. It wasn’t particularly hard to find one, and as he logged in, he began going over things. Somewhere in his search for information, he noticed that Eliana was logged in at one of the bullpen consoles.

Even though there is a lot to do, I need to make time and chat with Eli.

Trying not to run, but also avoiding an odd-looking quick walk, Nathan settled on taking longer strides to get him to his destination. It wasn’t far, and Ramius’ pace brought him up to where McKenna was sitting.

“Hey Eli,” Nathan said, his voice noticeably chipper, and slightly higher in tone than his usual, “I saw that you were logged in and thought I’d come over to say ‘hi’!”

The grin was still on Nathan’s face that he had been wearing since exiting out of Coleman’s office. The critic in his brain told him he had no right to be as happy as he was, that everything going on was just another layer of supervision. But the pessimism couldn’t outweigh the lucky feeling for him; that things might finally be working out.

“I heard from the Chief that you got your own team. Congratulations!”

== Petty Officer Second Class Tassa ‘Ziggy’ Zh’kol – Temp NRC ==

=== COS Office – Recall Timeline ===

Tassa had managed to quell the desire to laugh out loud as Ramius very nearly skipped out of the Chief’s office. Ziggy enjoyed it though, knowing that Nathan had had a rough time as of late, which was to say that his whole career until recently had been tough. Then with all the personal drama, the man just didn’t have a chance to come up for air. As an added bonus, it would give the newly made ‘Junior Grade’ a focus. The fact that Prassn would be keeping an eye on him was just icing on the Chief’s cake, Ziggy knew.

“Well, that is another item off your list Chief,” Tassa’s finger zipped across the display of her PADD, crossing out one of the many ‘to-do’ lines.

“Alright, what else is on there?”

“Did you send that status update to Commander Braggins yet? Fairly sure today is the deadline.”

Zh’kol’s antennae leaned forward when Coleman’s face went from a smile to neutral.

You didn’t did you? You forgot! I knew it!

“Let’s see here,” Coleman had gone straight for his console, and was trying to make it look like he was pulling up previously sent messages.

“You could just order me to send a message for you, sir.”

“No need Ziggy,” the Chief’s smile returned to him, “I had it drafted and ready to send. There, it is already on the way!”

The PADD pinged in the Andorian’s hands, and she looked at the message,

[Coleman to Braggins, Security is ready to Charlie Mike.]

“Charlie Mike?”

“Continue Mission,” Coleman replied, leaning back into his chair, “I could say condition green, but we’ve been green for awhile now. Hopefully Commander Braggins doesn’t mind a change in lingo every so often.”

“Your butt not mine,” Ziggy grinned and leaned back into her chair too.

Now that the simulation run through had finished and grimacing slightly at the now cold remnants of her coffee. Eliana decided against drinking what was left as a more nicer distraction arrived in the form of one Nathan Ramius. Realising as he approached, how much she had missed talking to her friend. Although had to admit that it was so good to see him and smiled as he greeted her. The chipper and slightly high tone to his voice was noticeable but just hearing him speak was like music to her ears. "Hey you and I'm glad that you did as I've missed you" she admitted, glad to have this time with him.

She knew that their shifts didn't always coincide lately what with her being a Team Leader now but she would always make time for Nathan as him, Ben and Liam were her first real friends since becoming part of this crew.

It was also good to see that grin and him looking happy, reminding her of the Nathan she loved like a brother. So when he then congratulated her about getting her own team, she knew it was genuine as she answered her friend. "Thank you and congratulations on the new pip, you deserve it".

He deserved this new promotion as she knew what it would mean to him, especially with what he had been through and she was proud of him.

"Hey you and I'm glad that you did as I've missed you," Eliana smiled.

“I’ve missed you too. Haven’t been my usual self lately. Sorry for that,” he admitted, though didn’t dwell on it long.

When Eliana congratulated him on the pip, he smiled somewhat sheepishly. It still felt odd. There was still the feeling that he didn’t deserve the promotion, though he was trying his best to silence that critic; getting a chance at the SRT would likely prove to be helpful in that endeavor. The only other change was a couple of officers calling him ‘sir’, and Lomax specifically had done it on several occasions. After the first couple of days, Nathan was quick to offer to keep things at surnames, unless it was official or in front of the Commander or Captain.

“Thanks. Feels… weird,” he rubbed the back of his neck, then cracked it using a twist of his shoulders.

“I wasn’t expecting it at all. I mean. I just don’t think I really earned it, you know? Still feel like there is a huge hill to climb to get back to where I should have been. Though, I guess, it doesn’t help to think like that. I am where I am, and there isn’t any changing that. I should focus on the present, and not get distracted by… the past.”

Nathan puffed out a small bit of air, and looked around the bullpen. For how busy the Security Complex was, there weren’t many people making use of the consoles. Instead, they seemed to be moving to and from the Lounge or Armory.

The last bit of his statement was loaded. While he could have meant the distant past, there was also the recent past that was haunting him. Most of that was personal life issues. Michelle and Beka being the two people that seemed to have staked claim in his brain, and neither were allowing themselves to be evicted from it, try as he might.

“Though now I have something else that will require my attention and dedication. Which will be good. I think the Chief saw I needed a direction for all of my energy, and so he is allowing me to be a trainee for the Special Response Team,” his grin returned, though blunted from what it was before.

“It sucks that it isn’t your team specifically, but I understand why that choice was made. Hopefully there will be joint training and that I’ll get to see you a little more often. I didn’t realize how long it had been since the last time we just, well, talked.”

“Since we are getting the chance now, how have things been for you? William doing well? Liam too? I’ve heard through the grapevine you’ve been spending a lot of time with some of the other ladies; namely Robin and Beka.”

It wasn't difficult to get caught up in the emotion of this moment, especially when Nathan admitted that he had also missed her. However she felt as though his apology wasn't needed because she knew that he hadn't been himself, ever since the Megasphere. Whilst she didn't know the specifics and nor would she ask, her friend had certainly been through a lot. "I know you haven't but you don't need to apologise, you're family and always have been".

As he reacted to her congratulations about his new pip. Eli understood why it might feel weird for him and listened as he explained why. There was the vulnerable side to her friend and the same self doubt that she had gone through albeit in different circumstances. Yet she had never given up on him and was always there if he ever needed her. Although it was good to hear that he had realised that he didn't have to be distracted by the past. Okay he wasn't specific but he didn't have to be, considering everything he had been through lately, including the break up with Beka.

" I get why you feel that way Nathan, I really go but I agree, don't let the past dictate you as that's something I've discovered and I'm always here for you".

When he continued and revealed that he was joining the SRT as a trainee. Eli smiled at seeing his grin, even if it wasn't as beaming as before. Not that it mattered as Coleman clearly knew his team well by giving them both a chance with their respective new assignments. "That's great news Nathan" she said as he then went on. Finding herself agreeing with him in regards to how it sucked how he wouldn't be part of her team. But there was a silver lining if there was joint training and being able to see him more.

"It does but hopefully we will see more of each other and have joint training. I knew how long it had been, however I was happy to wait until you were ready".

That's what good friends did for one another and now they could make up for the tone that had been lost. Smiling again as he asked after her and her boys, as well as what he had heard through the grapevine.

"I'm good, well even better now that I've had my dodgy knee fixed. William is almost walking, he'll be one soon and he's just as adorable as ever. As for Liam, despite us being on different shifts, we make it work and it also means that William gets to be with one of us, instead of going to the sitter all the time".

It had worked out well and she still loved every moment of family life and getting to share it all with the man who had showed her so much decency, respect and love. " What you heard is correct, I do spend time with Beka and Robin. Beka is the one who did the surgery on my knee".

Eli would understand if he didn't want to talk too much about Beka and yes, they were both her friends but that didn't mean she couldn't be there for them both.

Thinking back to all the times that he could have spoken to Eli, Nathan regretted not going to see her sooner. Talking with her was nice. Calming. Almost soothing. The way that she reassured him was what really mattered, as there was far too much of Ramius chastising himself mentally. It wasn’t the past that he could affect, it was the present moment. Even if he didn’t feel completely in control of his situation all the time, what he did in each and every moment was what he could influence.

Nathan leaned to one side a bit as they continued chatting, his eyes focusing on Eli as she spoke despite some people walking past. It felt like things were busier than usual, and his mind wanted to wander, wondering if they were moving on from New New Talaxia. Instead, Nathan smiled and let his subconscious mind worry about his periphery.

If we get orders to move out, I’m sure we’ll hear of it tout suite.

“That’s good that you got your knee fixed!” Nathan widened his grin.

Maybe I should have mine looked at? My ACL was patched up a long time ago, and they did a great job on my femur too. But sometimes it still gets sore. Wonder if it is just in my head, or if there is something physical to it?

“All the better for you to keep up with William once he finds his feet, I have no doubt. Time flies when it comes to children. It seems like such a short time ago since he was born. Hard to believe it’s been nearly a year!”

That realization put a few more things into perspective for Nathan, but he didn’t dwell on it, at least in the moment he was sharing with Eliana.

" What you heard is correct, I do spend time with Beka and Robin. Beka is the one who did the surgery on my knee".

It wasn’t surprising at all, that Beka was the one to do surgery on Eliana. Despite things between Nathan and Beka, he still heard his fair share of information about her. Usually, it was whenever he patrolled down to Engineering; Whitby was a font of knowledge when it came to the rumor mill. And rumor had it that the redheaded doctor was working on becoming a surgical wunderkind. Nathan knew a little of Beka’s focus and drive, so he had nodded in affirmation when he had first heard. Though now, this was eyewitness testimony greenlighting the rumors; something Nathan was careful about even if something did sound correct at first pass.

“That’s good, I’ve heard that Beka has really been working on surgical qualifications. She is a very committed, very focused woman. I’m certain she did a fantastic job, as Beka wouldn’t allow it to be any other way,” he smiled.

“But I’m also glad you’ve been hanging with the girls, as it were. It is always important to have a good social circle. Heh, I should probably take my own advice on that,” Nathan winced slightly, and rubbed the back of his neck again.

“I think things between Beka and I are okay. What happened… it wasn’t okay. But I did chat with her, and it seems like I’m forgiven. I mean, I am forgiven. From Beka. Just… I don’t think I deserve her forgiveness on everything that happened. I’m trying to work through it still. But if I saw you all having a drink, what happened wouldn’t dissuade me from coming over and saying hi.”

There was a short pause from Nathan, as he considered something, before he continued.

“I just hope that she is actually alright though. It wasn’t an easy situation, and I complicated it by how I went about things. I just…” he sighed, “…I think I just need to focus on me for awhile, because I haven’t been good at multitasking.”

Now Nathan let out a little chuckle at himself, and shook his head in response.

“Anyway. Do you know what is happening at all? I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to shove off from here. The Talaxians are nice and all… but… I’m ready for a change in locale and for something new. Maybe not necessarily exciting, because exciting can be bad. Plus, I’m not going to say the ‘Q’ word either.”

Even if I hate when things are quiet in the office. I’d much prefer to be busy with something. Though, with this SRT stuff, I doubt I’ll have time to worry about being bored for the foreseeable future.

Eliana was acutely aware just how busy the department was starting to get as she continued chatting with Nathan. Although not completely out of place depending on the shift rotation, it did give pause for thought at the prospect of leaving New Talax. However until told otherwise, Eli was happy to make the most of whatever time they had left, catching up with her friend. Answering his questions and just generally being around him, felt like they had resumed where they had left off as if nothing had kept them apart.

When his grinned widened and told her how good it was to hear that she had gotten her knee fixed. Eli knew that his response was genuine as she replied. "I agree as I couldn't put it off any longer, especially after what happened on the asteroid" she admitted, knowing that she didn't have to elaborate about their introduction to the DQ. As talk then shifted to William and how she would now be able to keep up with him better. Eli smiled and he was right about that and how it was hard to believe that it had been almost a year.

"Exactly as he likes to keep us active and it is, as I never imagined that I would be divorced and in a much more happy and rewarding relationship".

Even though she had gone through some tough times and came out stronger and happier because of it. She wasn't completely insensitive to think that she was the only one. Yet they were still here and that definitely counted for something, even if you didn't fully realise it immediately. As talk continued, the subject of Beka was likely to evoke difficult emotions in Nathan giving their history and how things hadn't quite worked out. But when he did speak, Eli could tell that there was still a fondness there, before Nathan spoke about how glad he was that she was hanging out with the girls. " You're right she wouldn't and everything is a lot better than it was before, so there's no holding me back and thank you, I do love being around them.

Nathan was also right about taking his own advice about having a good social circle, before he explained in more detail his last encounter with the Doctor. Eli understood that things were difficult so she listened, letting him get it all out. "I know it might feel as though you don't fully deserve her forgiveness, but from the sound of it you do and it might take a little time but exactly you're always welcome to join us, if you ever see us. I still want to hang out with you regardless".

Following his pause, there was still that concern and yet taking the step to focus on himself was the right thing to do. " It might not have worked out but Beka is strong and so are you. Although I do support the idea of you focusing on yourself for as long as you need to and you'll always have me to talk too".

Eli didn't blame Nathan either for changing the subject to something work related as he asked if she knew what was going on. Thinking in a similar way to him about leaving the Talaxians and seeing what else the DQ had to offer. " Good because we know that word is forbidden in here and I don't but considering how busy it's getting. Hopefully that means that we're getting ready to leave as I'm ready for something different".

Nodding at Eliana’s remark about the asteroid, it was hard for Nathan’s face not to drop slightly. He hadn’t realized that Eli hadn’t taken care of her knee before then. Thinking back to all the other scenarios that they had been through; he was surprised that it hadn’t happened sooner. Though, for a time, things happened rather rapidly. There wasn’t always an opportune moment that allowed for recovering from surgery, much like a great many things that got dropped by the wayside until their journey to the DQ.

As Eliana shifted the conversation, the smile returned to Nathan’s face as he listened, paying intent attention to Eli as she spoke. There was always such excitement and verve whenever she spoke of William, or Liam for that matter too. He was happy for her. How could he not be? Though the slightest pang of envy surfaced, before Ramius reminded himself what Eliana had also been through. It wasn’t an easy road that the blonde-haired Team Leader had travelled to get to where she was now. However, it certainly was good to see that she finally had not just what she needed, but deserved: a loving family.

“You are deserving of the love you are surrounded by Eli, and both your boys are lucky to have you,” Nathan said, before moving on.

Hearing her talk about Beka and Robin made him smile even larger, and her comment about wanting to still hang out with him did help buoy his feelings. Despite being on a relatively large ship, things felt smaller sometimes. Talk travelled fast on the Artemis. Officers were not as numerous as Enlisted were. There were only so many places for recreational activities, and eventually, it would happen that even actively avoiding someone would lead to a chance encounter somewhere. It just didn’t work to act in such a manner.

“…Although I do support the idea of you focusing on yourself for as long as you need to and you'll always have me to talk too".

This time he gave a shy smirk, his eyes briefly darting to Eli’s before he looked away and changed the subject. Eliana’s reply to the switch in topic wasn’t surprising. Most people Nathan had spoken to were looking for a change in locale. Others wanted to carry on with one of the major objectives of coming to the DQ: finding Voyager, if she was still to be found.

“Yeahhhh… I’ve caught enough flak recently about using that word to know it is taboo,” he chuckled.

“I’m surprised that nothing has come down the pipe yet. Though I’m sure that Tyr… er, Captain Crawford, had a lot on her plate regarding decision making, especially when considering things surrounding the Callisto and such. I’m curious, but not enough to go poking and prying; that lesson was learned long ago,” there was another small laugh, though this one was less of levity and more of regretful release.

There was more movement around them, and it reminded Nathan that he needed to get his gear sorted sooner rather than later.

“I should probably let you get back to work Eli, and I should get myself in motion. Thank you for chatting with me and… well, thank you for being you.”

A rather large beaming grin popped up onto Nathan’s face, and he regarded her again for a moment. He waited for her reply, before giving a small wave, and turning about in order to head toward the Armory.

It was good to see the smile return to Nathan's face as the conversation moved away from her knee, especially as it was something that she luckily didn't have to worry about anymore. Although as her friend counteracted what she had said, by telling her that she was also deserving of the love that surrounded her as well as how lucky her boys were to have her. Eliana smiled, very much feeling the emotion of it all. "That means a lot to hear you say that and I'm lucky to also have you in my life".

For a moment, Eli thought that nothing could stop the smiles from either of them as talk continued, even with the truth that was being spoken and potential awkwardness of certain topics. However the shy smirk and chuckle, especially when mentioning or not mentioning the 'q' word, had Eli grinning again.

" Yeah as I think we've all regretted saying it at some point".

Eli didn't have to go into too much detail regarding that reply as Nathan talked about his surprise regarding where they were likely headed next and their possible departure from New Talax. Then again as he brought up Tyra, the Callisto and everything associated with being one ship down. Eli could understand the headache that would come with that and Nathan's own curiosity. Grinning once more at his reply and admission to learning his lesson when it came to poking and prying. Agreeing that it was best to just wait and be prepared as much as possible.

Then their time together began to come to an end as Nathan spoke again and he was right, they both had work to do. The large sincere grin matching his words perfectly and Eli definitely felt a lot more brighter due to seeing him and having this time. " Good idea and anytime Nathan, I've really enjoyed it too and getting the chance to talk. I look forward to doing this again".

Returning the wave, Eli watched her friend as he headed for the Armory, then it was time for a refill before getting her team together for their scheduled patrol.

== One Week Later ==

Finding herself between training exercises and having caught up with her reports. Eliana had taken herself off to the firing range whilst the rest of her team enjoyed a well earned break. There was no better feeling than changing things up and going back to a more simpler form of training, especially after spending the last week putting her team through their paces. Ever since she had become an official Team Leader, it had given her a sense of purpose and a renewed determination to prove that she had what it took to remain in her current position.

Not that anyone had said anything but her last meeting with Coleman and wanting to pass on what she knew. Not to mention her surgery and not wanting a repeat of the Asteroid incident, it was good to remind herself what she was capable of. However as she neared the end of her allotted time, Eli was suddenly and inexplicably thrown to the ground. Unable to stop herself as she bounced off the panel on her way down. Momentarily stunned and wondering what was going on, the security officer tried to shake it off as she was forcibly reminded of their arrival in the DQ.

Having no idea of why they had dropped out of warp other than the working assumption that it wasn't anything good and it had no doubt surprised them all. Eli stumbled to her feet, ignoring the pain from where she had awkwardly landed and the slight disorientation and carefully made her way into the main hub of the Security complex.

" Okehampton, Lewis, you're with me, Sanderson gather the others, whilst I find Ziggy and the Chief, so we can try to figure out what the hell just happened".

Orders given and feeling almost normal, Eli immediately sought out Ziggy. " Ziggy, whatever that was, it wasn't good" she said as she spotted her friend.

== NRC – Petty Officer 2nd Class Tassa “Ziggy” Zh’kol ==

Things had become progressively less stressful for Tassa. Her antennae twirled a bit as she contemplated whether or not it was because she was getting better at her job, or if things had slowed. Or both. Either way, it was a nice change of pace, she considered. There was more time for the finer things, like actual leisurely activities, where she could enjoy herself and not have to worry about a glacier worth of paperwork waiting for her.

Sipping her iced raktajino, Zh’kol leaned back into her chair and savored the drink. It was a rare display of repose for her, and most might not even realize that she was relaxing, if it wasn’t for the fact that her antennae withered low to almost rest on her head.

For a brief moment, Ziggy closed her eyes. A tingle swept up her back as she remembered what it was like to walk Lor’Vela, particularly New Therin Park. So many fragrances could be found there, but Tassa struggled to remember all of those wonderful smells. It had been such a long time since she had been anywhere near Andoria, and that drew a longing sigh that heaved from her chest. The sensation was surprising to her, as Ziggy didn’t consider herself the sentimental type, at least not often. But now, out in the far-flung Delta Quadrant, distance and time seemed to warp her sensibilities. When the Artemis returned to the Beta Quadrant, Tassa decided just then, that she would request some leave.

Then, a sort of epiphany struck Ziggy, causing her antennae to whip upwards, alert, while her eyes flickered back open. Something in her body told her to finish her drink. Not just take a sip. Not just a gulp. But to finish it. The impulse to do so was so strong, that Tassa immediately down the rest of the cold beverage.

Milliseconds later, the floor seemed to shift.

“What the…” it took all of Tassa’s strength to keep herself seated, but it was made easier in that she didn’t have to worry about spilling anything.

Leaping up to her feet, Ziggy deftly exited the small room, charging forward toward the main foyer.

“What’s going on? Are you okay?” she asked the dispatcher.

“I dunno. We’ve dropped out of warp, but that’s all I know for sure.”

“Get a hold of Engineering, find out if they need hands for heavy lifting.”

It was then that the blonde haired Lieutenant McKenna, seemed to also emerge sounding just as concerned as Tassa felt.

" Ziggy, whatever that was, it wasn't good".

“No, it wasn’t.”

Tassa’s antennae sensed movement, and they angled toward that area as the rest of her body followed. It was just in time to see into the COS office.

Stepping out from his office, it was obvious that Damian hadn’t had the same foresight that Tassa had. Coleman’s front uniform was soaked, with pieces of what looked to be ramen noodles hanging from threads in the clothing. Ziggy had seen quite a few of the Lieutenant’s many expressions, but his face now was a new one; a mix of disbelief, anger, concern, and perhaps a smidge of chagrin.

== Lieutenant Damian Coleman ==

Seeing that both Tassa and Eliana were okay, a bit of his concern was alleviated. But not all. Whatever they had just hit, might have caused some serious injuries throughout the ship.

“Ziggy, get on the horn with whoever, and find out what is going on. Get the dispatchers to relay that information,” he said coolly.

Then, his eyes fell to McKenna who was also standing near the Andorian.

“Lieutenant McKenna. Get teams together for both damage control parties, and emergency medical assistance. Call personnel in from off-shift if you need to. And recall SRT teams that are training in the holodeck. I want them combat ready in case whatever just happened leads to that.”

He paused for a second or two, before nodding to both Eliana and Tassa.

“I’m… going to go get changed.”

With that, Coleman marched toward the Locker Room, each step sounding off a soggy squelch beneath the treads.

Seeing Ziggy had definitely helped Eliana as the Andorian PO answered her and shared the same concerns as she did. They may not know exactly what had happened and yes, Eli was just as worried about Liam and William. However she couldn't exactly abandon her post to go check on them. No the best way for her to help them and everyone else she cared about, was to do her job and focus on whatever she was ordered to do.

Of course the worry clawed at her chest but this wasn't the first time this had happened and it was unlikely to be the last. The DQ held a lot of secrets and mysteries and this was just another mystery to solve. Eli was about to respond to Ziggy when her friend's attention moved towards Coleman's office as the Chief emerged covered in noodles and the remains of his lunch.

The expression on his face was one she hadn't really seen before, but then again considering the circumstances, she didn't blame him in the slightest. As he looked to each of them in turn and issued orders. Eliana was quick to acknowledge him before he left them in order to change. " Acknowledged Chief" she said keeping it brief as he left and focused on her orders as opposed to the squelching sounds that he made.

Her first task was to bring in those who were currently off shift, thinking it was better to have extra hands without the need to ask for it later. Plus experience had taught her to be prepared, especially with recent history. Turning towards dispatch to do just that, before tapping her comm badge.

" McKenna to Prassn, all SRT teams are being recalled, please report to the complex immediately".

Call made, Eli then began to address those who were present. " Okay people, I want everyone in teams of five, we don't know what's going on yet but that doesn't mean that we can't be ready. Let's start by getting weapons and tricorders" she ordered, not wanting to waste precious time as people started to follow her orders.

That is worrying! The antimatter storage pods?! If the containment is breached on those… doesn’t half the ship or more go boom?

Suddenly, Tassa felt somewhat better about often being left behind in the Security Complex to perform all the duties that logistics and communications entailed. Though that was small solace as she continued to think about it more. If antimatter did somehow escape, the cascade would be… tragic.

Wonder if they’d send an Expedition to come find us…

[Acknowledged Lieutenant], Praasn’s no non-sense tone came back to McKenna’s comm badge, [Ramius was already sent down to check things out. The rest of the teams here are RTB.]

== Coleman ==

As Damian stepped back out from the locker room in a fresh uniform, the Complex was buzzing with activity, which he was glad to see. He also had come back just in time to overhear Praasn’s reply to Lieutenant McKenna regarding whom he chose to send from his team to fact-find.

Ramius and Elias, in such close proximity, during a crisis? I’m sure I remember a conversation with the Captain regarding such a scenario.

“McKenna, gear up and take some extra sidearms and munitions with you. Catch up with Damage Control Team…” he paused to check his PADD and see which team Ramius had assigned himself to.

“DC Team Eight, and…” there was another pause, and Coleman’s eyebrow raised knowingly, “backup Mr. Ramius and company. Remember to gear up for potential radiation before going in, and escort Chief Elias and his team. Report back your status regularly.”

With those orders given, Coleman turned away from Eliana and towards Ziggy.

“Put us at a readiness level two, and get everyone geared up…”

His voice continued in a firm and steady tone, calmly giving orders and getting Security ready for a whole host of potentialities. Then, after that barrage was completed, he tapped his comm badge.

“Coleman to Crawford. Acknowledged. Security is en route to provide Damage Control and Evac assistance.”

Hearing the call from the Bridge after securing her weapons and tricorder. Eliana could only imagine what was going on down on Deck 18 and that whatever it was, didn't sound good at all, further confirming her earlier concerns. Yet she wasn't about to cast any assumptions until they knew more and by that, it meant waiting for updates or if Coleman chose to send her to assist. Either way she was ready for more orders as Praasn answered her in his typical no nonsense tone. That's what she liked about him as she acknowledged his response.

[Understood Chief.]

Having Nathan already down there checking things out would no doubt save some time as Coleman reappeared in a fresh uniform and gave her a direct order. The pause and the knowing raised eyebrow told her everything that she needed too and understood it perfectly.

" Acknowledged Chief" she responded, her brief answer acknowledging everything that had been said as Coleman turned towards Ziggy. Leaving Eli to fulfil her new orders as she gathered her team then sought out the extra side arms and munitions. Once they had everything they needed, Eli then led them out of the complex and into a waiting lift.

[Ramius to Dispatch. Deck Eighteen has been cleared of all non-essentials. We have a possible large, and advanced, explosive device...] there was a pause.

[Actually, it is potentially a partially phased-mine next to the antimatter storage pods. Please advise Lieutenant Coleman. We will await further orders.]

Coleman sat at one of the consoles in the Dispatch area of the Security Complex, monitoring the situation while Ziggy was handling the logistics of placing teams in vital areas. The Andorian was extremely good at her job, which meant that Damian was relegated to mostly sitting, watching, and giving the occasional order as the situation changed. He didn’t think he would have longed for the Talaxian Asteroid Colony ever again, but somehow as he sat in his chair watching things rather than participating, a part of him did consider it.

[McKenna to Security, Deck 18 has been evacuated of all non essential personnel. My team are taking position in strategic points as well as maintaining a patrol of the deck. Proceeding to assist Lieutenant Ramius and Chief Elias, McKenna out].

Ziggy had turned to look at Damian, and he smiled at her when she realized that he was monitoring the comms.

“Guess I don’t have to reiterate that to you?” she said sarcastically.

“Nope.”

The Andorian Petty Officer whipped about and continued her duties as Coleman let out a sigh. His fingers thrummed against the console rhythmically, until he decided to pull up visual/audio feeds. Checking through several decks of the ship, it showed that Security teams were in place; not just to help, but to protect other vital areas of the ship.

[Ramius to Dispatch…]

Damian turned toward the source, eyes narrowing slightly.

[…Deck Eighteen has been cleared of all non-essentials. We have a possible large, and advanced, explosive device... Actually, it is potentially a partially phased-mine next to the antimatter storage pods. Please advise Lieutenant Coleman. We will await further orders.]

“Unh,” Ziggy’s antennae whisked the air as they forcibly turned hard, locking onto Damian.

And that is why you don’t wish for interesting things to happen on a shift.

“Which of our Ordnance Specialists are not out on patrol right now?”

Ziggy turned back to her console and punched in a couple of commands, her finger tracing the display until she stopped on a name.

“Petty Officer Tegg is in the Armory right now sir.”

Coleman sighed, a little bit more heavily than he had intended, but nodded.

“Fine, send that sarcastic Denobulan down there with two assistants and whatever gear they need, pronto. And tell them not to get blowed up.”

Cause if they get blowed up, so do we…

“Coleman to McKenna. Move the rest of your team out of Deck Eighteen if you haven't already, except for a couple of officers who will restrict access to the deck at the turbolift, in case any non-essentials try to wander in. Stay onsite and continue to give updates. Specialist Tegg is en route with an EOD team. Coleman out.”

The coffee was smooth. Silky even. There were some officers who were great at their security jobs, and Damian appreciated them. Then, there were others who were not so good; who required a little extra attention. He appreciated them too, because so far, all of them were at least trying to be great security officers. Then there were the ones who could make an amazing cup of joe.

I wonder if I could ever find the unicorn that is the perfect Security Officer and coffee maker?

Heading back to Dispatch, Coleman was worrying about the entire situation. Which, was why he went and got coffee in the first place. The entire ship didn’t blow up in some fiery explosion from the detonation of antimatter, so he assumed that all was, still, as well as things could be. However, the last update he’d received from McKenna was that they had located the mine, Tegg was on scene, and they were going in. Though, part of that message did have him slightly confused as to why the First Officer was down there. He didn’t recall her having EOD training, but there were many aspects of her file that were off limits even to the Chief of Security.

Which only makes sense when considering Jenny’s family tree.

“Ziggy, any updates?”

“Not since the last time you asked me Chief,” she said in between a communication with a patrol team, “did you want me to contact them?”

“No, no,” Coleman said apologetically, realizing he’d caught Tassa busy doing her job, while he was getting refreshments.

Carefully, he waved the other cup in his left hand near her as an offering, and smiled when she took it from him without looking.

“I’ll get on the horn with them.”

Stepping over to one of the other dispatch desks that wasn’t in use, he sat down and keyed in a series of commands on the LCARS; logging in and opening a comm channel to Eliana.

“Coleman to McKenna. Status update if you are free and clear from working on the device.”

After a few minutes delay, Eliana responded to Coleman.

[Apologies for the delay Chief, however I can now tell you that the mine has successfully been disarmed. Turns out it was of Vaadwuar design and had a malfunctioning phase shifter which worked to our advantage. I'll return to the complex, once we've finished here.]

After going through a near death experience and feeling very much alive, now that they had dealt with the Vaadwuar mine. Eli had gone back to the security complex, before being sent out to assist with damage control. Then from there, she had returned exhausted to her quarters and hugged William tightly, happy to see her son, before doing the same with Liam. Recounting everything that happened over dinner, her fears, the relief and all the emotions that came with it.

It felt good to get it off her chest, rather than bottle it up, especially with someone who understood their way of life. Afterwards it was nice to relax and forget about it for a little while and now she was back on duty, ready to do it all again. Although there had been a slight difference, after being asked to stay on call, in case of a possible away mission.

Their destination was a repair station that had been detected and were currently waiting further details. So with that in mind, Eli had geared up, rather than be ready at the last minute and was stood refilling her coffee cup. The heady aroma filling every sense and its warmth soothing her hands. Caffeine was definitely needed and made the most of that moment.

<< Recreation Complex <<

Fixing up the way his armor was sitting on him, Nathan fidgeted with just about every aspect of it. He was used to wearing such equipment, that wasn’t the problem. However, it was all the things on his mind that were the real source of his frustration. It was the first time in a very long time that he had something external to be at odds about. Still, he knew he had to focus up, and thankfully a new distraction was about to make way onto the stage of his thoughts.

“El-tee jay-gee,” the voice from behind the gun cage called.

“Yeah?” Nathan turned about, looking confused as to why he was being called back over.

“Here is your newly issued weaponry sir. You’ve been authorized to carry this for the current mission by Chief Coleman. The case will be taken back up to your Quarters and secured in your weapons locker. Inside is a maintenance kit and instructions are available on your console, if needed.”

Nathan knew he pulled a dumb face, as the Armory officer seemed amused at him. Stepping forward, he opened the case and was surprised to find a PR-1A inside, gleamingly new. It wasn’t quite like Tyra’s; hers was much more customized than what was presented before him.

“It is the standard issue, semi-automatic variety," the officer seemed to read his mind.

“Did Coleman say why he thought I might need it?” Nathan asked as he pulled the rifle from its protective compartment.

“No sir. He has ordered all SRT members be issued PR-1As while we are in the Delta Quadrant. Authorization has been extended to select and certified Away Team Security Officers, should the Away Team Lead, Command, or the Chief, deem it necessary.”

Checking the weapon over, he went through the process of making sure that all the components were in working order. More than a few times he flipped it over, while the other officer simply crossed their arms. It wasn’t that Nathan didn’t trust them, but he was always very careful to ensure that anything assigned to him was in tip-top condition.

“Sorry,” Nathan finally said, “I’m a little… very, attentive to details with firearms.”

“No offence taken sir. Here are your magazines. If you need anything before you go, let me know.”

“Thank you,” Ramius smiled and nodded without looking up, much like a kid at Christmas.

A few moments passed where Nathan fiddled with the sling until he had it to his liking. The five magazines he tucked away to the various holders and pouches located on his body armor, but he left the weapon unloaded; they weren’t at General Quarters, and weren’t finalizing any mission prep that he knew of just yet. Plus, Nathan still had a phaser pistol holstered at his hip, which was ready if needed.

Must be getting close to our next destination if details like this are getting ironed out.

Walking out into the main foyer, the place was nearly empty and not as bustling as it often was just before each shift. One of the dispatchers looked both bored and tired, a dangerous combination he knew. There was a bit of a grumble from his stomach, and Nathan placed a hand on his gut as if to calm the thunder.

“Hmmm… I suppose I could grab a quick snack and some coffee.”

With new purpose, he made his way toward the Lounge area. Entering, he immediately smelled the intense and wonderful coffee. However, it was seeing Eliana that put the smile on his face.

“Eli!” he sort of excitedly spoke, catching himself so that he didn’t yell.

“That coffee smells delicious, any snacks on the table?” the question was rhetorical in nature, as Nathan did a quick check of the tables to see what was out, if anything.

“I’m peckish for some reason,” he admitted to his friend as he went over to the replicator.

“Want anything to share? I kinda feel like nachos.”

There was definitely several benefits of having a lounge within the complex. It may not be massive but it certainly served its purpose as a place to chat, unwind and silently contemplate whatever was going on in your mind. Of course that contemplation could cover a range of emotions and thoughts. However the respite that this place offered, had proven to be invaluable to Eli ever since she had stepped foot on the Artemis.

From missions to the demise of her marriage and the struggles of trying to raise a child on her own. Her determination to do her best, the admission that she should never be afraid of asking for help when she needed it as well as inevitably helping others, thanks to her own experiences. Nat Okehampton sprung to the forefront of Eli's mind from that last thought and how she had since become a valued member of her team. So as Eli stood there, enjoying the delicious elixir known as coffee, those moments played out in her head. Allowing her to draw strength and purpose from it as she waited for further news as to why she was suited up with the added surprise of the new PR1-A that was now part of her on call readiness.

Being one of only a few that had been given authorisation for a such a weapon, felt like a testament to how much she had endured and achieved in her time here. As with everything, it would be well taken care of as her thoughts were happily interrupted by Nathan's excited greeting. " Hey Trouble" she replied, clearly happy to see her friend.

At the mention of the coffee and snacks, Eli grinned slightly, knowing that they were spoiled by having such things available to them. She liked how they all looked after each other by bringing snacks to share and that included the Chief. "As it always does and yes, there's some cookies and birthday cake from yours truly" she said, thinking of her recent birthday as Nathan admitted that he was peckish and asked if she wanted anything to share before suggesting nachos.

That sounded good and without knowing when they would get the chance to do this next, decided to take him up on his offer. " That sounds good and I could go for nachos".

Hearing Eliana reply with his semi-nickname made Nathan smirk a bit before shaking his head. There weren't a lot of people that called him that. But there were enough. Before it might have bothered him, but as time went on, he started to get more accustomed to it.

When did that start happening?

His hands went over the replicators controls quickly, as if in a rehearsed manner. For some reason, he had been having cravings for nachos rather often, and had run the gambit on most of the menu options. Having tested something around fifty different types, layouts, and combinations, he had built a palette for the cheesy, crunchy, spicy, covered chips. With that knowledge, Nathan then took the bits and pieces from his favorites to build his own ‘Nathan Super Nachos’, and programmed the recipe in every replicator he came across. That way, if the craving struck him in his frequent haunts, it’d be available to him.

“Oh, that’s right you don’t like olives, do you?” Nathan said, as his fingers jammed the controls, quickly substituting black olives for more pickled jalapenos.

Turning his head, the other words that Eli has said finally struck him. He stared back at the table, looking over the sweets and hummed for a brief moment.

No. Savory first. Then sweet.

“I hope you were okay with my gift. I’ve still be trying to toil away at the whole woodworking stuff, and I’ve found myself in a rut, trying to perfect making bowls. Which is why you got a set of four for your birthday,” he chuckled as he finalized the replicator order.

“Speaking of which,” Nathan shot an impish look back toward Eli, “what did Liam end up getting you for your birthday?”

The sound of the replicator whirring punctuated his words, and a mere moment later, the glorious smell that was nachos wafted up into his nose.

“Last time I had talked to the Doc, he was desperately trying to give you the entire galaxy as a gift; I think I’ll helped him narrow a few of the more outlandish ideas down.”

Turning around, he brought the tray of nachos and napkins near to where Eli was, and set them down on one of the empty tables. He set out some napkins for her, and then a couple for himself, before waiting for her to sit.

“Though, I’m probably the last person that should be giving out relationship advice,” he chuckled, the usual tortured tone when speaking on such a subject curiously absent.

“Actually,” Nathan looked to Eli with a contemplative face, “I was actually really good about gifts and surprises. At least, with Chelle. Didn’t really get much of a chance to do that with Beka.”

There was a small sigh, but nothing as heavy as he’d usually make.

“Dig in!” he gestured.

Nathan's response to her calling him Trouble, only made her grin, knowing that she was one of only a select few who could get away with doing so. It was always meant in jest, especially with how much he had changed in the time that they had been friends. Having grown up with an older brother, she definitely saw Nathan as a younger brother and was very fortunate to have him in her and William's lives.

Having moments like this and watching him create a nacho masterpiece thanks to the replicators, made shifts like these more bearable as he then remembered that she wasn't so keen on black olives. "You know me so well" she remarked with a smile as Nathan then glanced at the snack table. Not that she blamed him for wanting savoury before sweet and now that he had mentioned nachos, Eli herself was looking forward to sharing them with him.

When he then brought up the gift that he had gotten her, Eli smiled again as she thought of the handmade bowls that he had made for her. They had been a nice and thoughtful surprise as well as something that would be used, every chance that she got. " I loved it Nathan" she admitted with honesty, thinking how spoiled she had been with gifts off her friends and loved ones. At the mention of Liam and how Nathan had helped when her boyfriend wanted to give her the entire galaxy. Eli's smile brightened as that was typical of the Irishman and she loved him for it.

" That sounds like my Liam, he loves to spoil me and would give me everything if he could. However he got me a lovely necklace with a jewel to represent us and William, as well as this gorgeous silver dress. He also got me flowers and a little trinket box from William" she revealed, answering her friend's question as the delicious smell of nachos permeated the air, before Nathan brought them over to an empty table.

Sitting down as he then spoke about being the last person to give relationship advice. Eli immediately noticed the lack of the usual sadness within his words as Nathan chuckled about it instead. That was nice to hear, because she knew how much that side of him had hurt, not to mention the pain it had caused.

" Oh I don't know about that as I remember coming to you when I realised that I liked Liam and look how that worked out" she said softly, giving him a reassuring look as he then brought up Michelle and Beka. Reaching out to offer comfort should he want to take it, because she knew how much that had affected both him and Beka. Michelle she couldn't really speak about, unless she wanted to break something.

" I know you didn't, but you'll get the chance again someday, whether it's Beka or someone else".

Leaving it there, unless he wanted to speak about it further, Eli grinned when he told her to dig in and so she did. Her first mouthful was like a taste explosion and soon made a compliment. " These are so good, we'll have to do this more often".

" That sounds like my Liam, he loves to spoil me and would give me everything if he could...”

“Oh yeah,” it was the quickest of interjections, with a broad smile accompanying it. The Irish doctor was a doting boyfriend of Eliana’s, which Nathan approved of, if only because he felt like a sister should deserve such earnest attention, which Eliana practically was.

Is.

Another smile crossed his lips when he heard of the gifts that Liam eventually gave to Eliana. Nathan was surprised that the man could be a doctor, because he was incredibly excitable. At one point, during their most recent wide-ranging conversation, Ramius had to wonder how Liam managed to find focus with his energy. Though, as Nathan thought more on it, that was probably the secret to having a true passion like Liam did for medicine, Eliana, and William. That sort of unerring ingenuous zeal, meant that when it came to those subjects, focus was probably easy.

Once Eli had finished off her list of gifts, including from her son, Nathan had to reply,

“Well, sounds like he did somehow manage to stop short of giving you the entire galaxy. I’ll have to chat with him every year then I guess, just to keep him in check,” there was a wink before they continued their conversation.

It was nice when Eliana reached out. Nathan’s face softened when he heard her tone and saw her body language change when it came to talking about the tougher subjects. It wasn’t that they didn’t hurt anymore. They still did. But slowly, he was coming to better terms with what had happened. It didn’t mean that there weren’t moments where he found himself melancholy again. However, the episodes became fewer, and were shorter lasting, as each wave rolled over him.

“Thanks Eli,” he said.

“Slowly but surely, I’m making it through. I just hope that they are too, y’know?”

There was one more small moment where he thought fondly, before shaking his head slightly and changing gears.

Once Eli had taken her first bite, Nathan jumped straight into the nachos as well. As he crunched down, he heard Eliana compliment the concoction, though his mouth was full. So, instead, he gave her the thumbs up sign as he tried to chew through the large helping he had shoved in his mouth. Eventually, he managed it, and grabbed a napkin with which to clean the edges of his lips.

“Thanks,” he stuttered out, “a lot of trial and error. A lot,” he laughed as his stomach made a slight rumble in thanks.

“I’ve been finding that my appetite has been coming back, especially after workouts, so I balance my calories to allow for a little bit of indulgence.”

Sitting back a bit in the chair, he continued,

“I’ve been thinking. We really should have some kind of get-together night. Play some games, have a few drinks, eat good food. It’d be nice for all of us to hang out; you, me, and Ben. We could extend the invitation outside of the three of us of course. The more the merrier if we decided to do a poker night.”

Leaning back in, he grabbed another sizeable chunk of their tasty snack, speaking before eating it.

“Things just get so busy when we are in mission mode. And I know I’ve been a little…” he paused briefly, “anti-social. But looking at how much time Ben is putting in as Chief, and you trying to balance work and life… it might be good for us to set a date and time to just relax. If it is scheduled, and we invite Cera, we are almost guaranteed she’d bring ‘Chief Elias’ with her,” Nathan smirked an evil grin before eating another sizeable serving of nachos.

Eliana grinned at Nathan's brief interjection and the genuiness of his smile, seeing the Nathan she knew behind it as her first real friend since becoming part of this crew, commented about the gifts that Liam had gotten her. Her relationship meant so much to her but so did her friendships and whilst Nathan was being jovial about it, having her best friend get on with Liam was important to her. She had definitely found the right balance as no one had liked her ex and that had been a realisation that wasn't easy at the time.

She also didn't doubt that he would do what he joked about and yet as the conversation became more serious and Nathan accepted her reaching out with her words and comfort. There was only one thing she could say in response to his thanks. "Always" she replied, before he became a little more thoughtful.

" That's what it takes sometimes and I'm proof of that, so I'm sure they are too".

Okay she didn't know Michelle all that well and couldn't really comment but with Beka, she could. As Nathan then jumped in with the nachos and reacted to her comment, Eli had to refrain from chuckling and focused on taking another handful of nachos. Only joining in once he managed to stutter out a thanks and laughed at his prior attempts in the quest to find the perfect nachos.

" It definitely paid off" she remarked, finding the whole combination moreish as Nathan told her about his appetite coming back which was definitely a good thing as he then continued and suggested a get together with Ben, as well as possibly extending the invitation to others.

"I'm glad that your appetite is coming back and as for a get together, count me in as I'd love to hang out with you both and whoever else wants to join us, if we decide on poker".

Agreeing with what he then said about how things got busy when they were in the midst of a mission, before the admission and brief pause that followed. Not that Eli blamed him for being that way as then spoke about her and Ben. He wasn't wrong and she loved the idea of spending time with them and the others that might join them. "I know what you mean and I think it's a great idea" she said in agreement. Although when he became the impish Nathan that she knew so well and grinned evilly at the mention of Cera and Ben. Eli was glad that she had already swallowed her last mouthful of chips as she chuckled.

"I've missed this side of Nathan and it's a good thing, that Ben isn't here" she teased again as she reached for more nachos.

Nathan laughed at the last part of Eliana’s sentence, and shook his head while diving for a couple more nachos of his own. Taking a couple of bites, he realized how dry his mouth was starting to feel, and excused himself with a hand over his mouth. Quickly, he ran over to the coffee, and poured a half cup. It took him only a moment to chug it back, before filling it up.

“Ah, mmm, coffee,” he said quietly, before projecting his voice again so Eli could hear him, “I’ve missed this side of myself too. Being sociable. I’ve missed you and Ben, everyone really.”

With a full cup of joe, Nathan turned and started to stride back over to the table that held his friend, and their small feast.

“I’m not saying that I don’t still get… well, mopey sometimes. I do. It hasn’t been as bad as usual though. I’m trying to look at this whole adventure out to the Delta Quadrant as a blank slate now. Really just letting go of the past and seizing this as the opportunity to build on myself.”

He sat down again, finding a spot for his coffee.

“I mean, I’ve already messed up a bit,” Nathan grimaced slightly, “but hey, it wasn’t to the same extent as… as you know.”

The briefest of pauses separated his words, as he rushed to carry on.

“That isn’t the point though. What is the point, is that we are here, now, having nachos and…” he screwed up his face some as he realized the flavor combination he’d chosen, “coffee. Not a combination I would suggest to most. If we weren’t on call, a margarita would be fantastic right at this moment.”

Nathan, again, laughed at himself and smiled up at Eliana.

“Ben has been working his butt off lately. He’d probably like to take a moment and enjoy some nachos with us. Actually, we’ve all been pretty busy haven’t we? I know you’ve been putting in some hours with your team. How has that been? I was kinda worried about you finding a balance with family and work, what with William being the age that he is now. But Team Leads mostly make their own hours, don’t they?”

The last part was a genuine question, as Nathan wasn’t entirely sure just how much leeway Eliana got with running her team. Coleman seemed pretty relaxed in the grand scheme of things, so Ramius could only assume that his friend generally got to figure out most hours. There were still times when the whole Department had to do training, and meetings, but other than that, Eliana might be able to carve out time for herself.

When Nathan laughed, it was a sound that Eliana wanted to cherish as it wasn't something that she got to hear often and at the same time, couldn't help but chuckle in response. They may be on call but having this time together was likely doing them both some good and even Nathan's sudden dash towards the coffee, threatened to send her into hysterics at his antics. Eli wasn't sure why she found it potentially hilarious, especially when he was clearly suffering from dry mouth thanks to the over indulging on nachos until she realised that it was more to do with being around her friend and the fun they were having.

Reaching for her own mug, Eli took a sip as Nathan then projected his voice so she could hear him. " I get that and it's easy to forget sometimes but I'm glad that we're getting to do this" Eli replied to his admission, before he rejoined her and continued. Again Eli could understand where he was coming from and had experienced that herself after the whole complicated and almost soul draining experience that was her very brief marriage.

"I know and I understand why you want to let go and better yourself as I did the same after the whole... shambles that was my marriage. So it can be done and I've been able to finally move past it all".

Of course it had taken some time but the main thing was that she had gotten past it, especially when she had realised that her ex had never really loved her and how Liam had shown her what a real relationship was. As Nathan then moved on and passed comment about how coffee didn't really go with nachos and how a margarita would be good if they weren't on call.

" Exactly and a margarita does sound good" she said as she picked up a smaller handful of delicious cheesy chip goodness and devoured it as Nathan spoke about Ben. Agreeing that their friend would probably enjoy this too and how busy they had all been lately. It was an inevitable down side to their careers but one they all got on with regardless to get where they were. Appreciating his concern about how her new role might be affecting family life and his genuine questions about it.

" I'm sure Ben would love to be here and agreed we've all been busy and I appreciate you worrying about me. But to answer your questions, being team leader has been going better than I thought it would and yes, I'm not always tied to one specific shift rotation so it's worked out quite well, especially with William and spending time with him and Liam".

== Office of the Chief of Security ==

Staying up late wasn’t usually Damian’s style. The man liked a tidy schedule, which included getting to bed at decent time so that he could get up quite early. However, with their approach to their potential destination on the second day, he decided to stay up. Thankfully, Coleman had managed a power nap in the evening, but it wasn’t ideal. Though, little in the Security world ended up ideal anyway. He’d deal with it, and continue on as always.

The PADD in his hand showed a replay of a training incident that he’d been reviewing and thinking on for the better of the day. It came down to two instigators, but involved five officers from his Department getting into fisticuffs with one another. There were some strong personalities, which was unsurprising. Security usually needed people like that, as the stresses often involved dictated certain personality traits. However, that also meant that there was the occasional head butting and **** measuring that occurred. It wasn’t something Damian approved of, but people had to let off steam or else major incidents would occur.

Like this…

The tension had been building with Reeve ever since another training exercise where he had had his butt handed to him. It was an indignity which, among those who had witnessed it weren’t keen to let him live down. Teasing, mocking, and heckling could only be taken by someone for so long before they reacted; and react Reeve did. The problem wasn’t the fight, but how it was fought. Reeve had sucker punched another enlisted man, dropping him instantly, and that man’s best friend then joined in to protect his fallen comrade. The rest of the squad had been trying to separate the fighters, and extricate the wounded, but some of them got caught up in the fighting themselves. Ultimately, the lot of them ended up getting stunned by Praasn and company when they arrived to see what the problem was about.

After reviewing all of the evidence, witness statements, and letting Reeve cool his heels in the brig, Damian was still deciding on his next course of action. Had it been a fair fight, he probably would have let the whole thing slide with a stern discussion from himself with the initial parties. But because of the sucker punch, and the near riotous actions of the rest of them, it meant he had to be more heavy handed than blasé with it all.

“A formal reprimand I suppose,” Damian said with a sigh, dropping the PADD to the desk and pinching the bridge of his nose.

[Crawford to Coleman. I need a security escort for an exploratory expedition to the repair station -- it appears abandoned but operational. I'd rather us not look like marauding invaders if the owners return so let's keep their gear more low key and store their back-ups and full tac gear on the Orion. Have one of them bring some toys geared towards booby traps, just in case.]

I need? Us? The Captain is leading another Away Team?

Damian knew that Tyra had been a Security officer in her own right, but it still stressed him out every time she decided to lead an Away Team herself. However, he knew better than to question her on it, and damn well knew better than to fight her either. There were other battles he’d prefer to spend energy on than ones in which he was sure were lost before they started.

“Understood Captain,” he started, a hint of grudging acceptance leaking into his tone, “I have officers readied, and will have them meet you in the Shuttlebay ma’am. Coleman out.”

Getting up from his desk, Coleman made a small noise as he stretched his muscles. Then, he pushed the chair back further, before starting to make his way to the door. A part of him considered strongly that he should be going on the Away Team with the Captain. Most Security Chiefs would probably demand that they go with their COs in such situations. At the same time though, Tyra knew the risks better than most, could handle herself better than most, and didn’t need to be coddled by a worried, parent-like, CoS. Plus, there was someone that was already on call more well suited to sticking to Tyra’s side, and whom Tyra could also keep an eye on herself.

Stepping into the main foyer, Coleman walked over to one of the dispatchers who seemed surprised to see him.

“Get De Fonto on the horn, and tell her to get geared up with her gadgets and gizmos, including tac gear. Send her to the Orion pronto.”

“Aye sir,” the dispatcher went straight to the board and began calling the Petty Officer up.

In the meantime, Coleman walked over to the main desk, and smiled at the duty officer.

“Where is McKenna and Ramius?”

“In the Lounge sir.”

With a nod, a smile, and a simple ‘thank you’, Damian turned and started toward the Lounge. He hoped that both of the Officers had geared up prior to getting a little R&R. When the door opened, he was happy to see they both were ready to go, though the smell of nachos instantly made Coleman hungry.

“McKenna, Ramius. Get down to the Shuttlebay ASAP, and get aboard the Orion. You’ll both be heading over to the repair station along with Captain Crawford and a small expedition. Petty Officer Third Class De Fonto will meet both of you down there; she’s a Sapper, as the Captain requested someone with experience with traps,” he sighed a little, remembering Tegg and the mine debacle.

“Ramius, you’ll be on your usual escort duty,” Coleman grinned, “McKenna, it’d be best for you to stick with any newbies that are going along for the ride. De Fonto can stick with the Engineers. Tyra wants things to look low-key, but take your gear and stash it in the Orion; in case you need it for some reason. And for my peace of mind, take a set of pattern enhancers to keep on the runabout too.”

Damian’s stomach grumbled a bit as he looked at the nachos.

Hmmm.

“Get going. I’ll take care of cleaning up,” a hint of an impish smirk peeked out from the corner of his lips.

Luckily Eli had already finished the rather messy and moreish bite of cheesy goodness when Coleman entered the lounge. Quickly checking herself for any wayward bits of cheese, chips or other toppings as it would of been highly embarrassing if she had things dripping off her. Once she had given herself the all clear, Eli listened as the Chief informed them that they were to get to the Shuttlebay asap, along with the mission details and their orders.

It wasn't a huge surprise to learn that Tyra was leading the away team and it seemed pretty straightforward along with including De Santo with her box of tricks should they encounter any unexpected surprises. Although experience had taught her not to get complacent when it involved this crew and was glad that she was ready to go. The specifics of their roles in this expedition was committed to memory as was the instructions of what they had to do with their gear.

Looking after any newbies was something Eli did well and it would be interesting to see who that would be. For now she acknowledged the order and got to her feet. "Acknowledged Chief and thank you" she replied as the Chief offered to clean up. Having a shrewd idea as to how thanks to his stomach rumble and impish grin.

Then Eli straightened up and grabbed the rest of her gear, then waited for Nathan to join her.

It wasn’t surprising to be called up to go on the Away Mission; that was, after all, why he and Eli had gotten geared up. What was surprising, was seeing the Chief walk in and give the orders to them himself. Though, it did amuse Nathan to see that he wasn’t the only one that enjoyed a late-night nacho dish.

Listening to their orders, Nathan nodded when told what his duty would be. It was unsurprising if he was honest with himself. Tyra often went on Away Missions. In fact, she was at the front lines for every mission, regardless of the circumstances. Ramius had learned long ago, in a rather public fashion, that questioning Tyra on her desire to be part of Away Teams was a bad idea. It also reminded Nathan, again, of an adage he attributed to Tyra whenever things like leading Away Teams came up: you can take the officer out of Security, but you can’t take Security out of the officer.

Eliana seemed to be happy with her assignment, and it did make sense, as she was extremely personable. Plus, her knowledge and training would help to temper greenhorn officers who might be having their first exposure to an Away Mission. Whereas Nathan… well, some might consider him to be the greenhorn still.

"Acknowledged Chief and thank you" Eliana said.

“Yes, thank you, and understood sir. I’ll keep a good eye on the Captain,” Nathan then added.

Without looking back at his meal, he grabbed a napkin to remove any final bits from his hands and fingers, before grabbing his gear. Then, with Eliana, they headed to the Shuttlebay.

The stream from the shower had done a number on clearing Hunter's head,  though it hadn't done as great of a job removing the tingling sensation that felt like it was lingering just under his skin.  It felt like the warm steam had merely opened the pores up more, allowing that extra post-lift blood flow to churn away. Unfortunately, that might be a great post workout feeling but it wasn't what he needed going into his shift.

He'd spent extra time drying off, hoping that the towel might scratch away the feeling that was starting to resemble spiders dancing along and under his skin.  He'd even turned to examine the skin on his back, noticing the way the hot water had given it a flushed appearance but fortunately,  no signs of actual spiders.

With the clock ticking ever closer to shift start,  he'd given up and had begun slowly piecing his uniform together.  Hunter had combed his brown hair into its usual style, noticing that his cheeks still looked a little red. In fact, the locker room felt a little warm now that he had more clothing on,  causing him to tug on his collar a little.

He couldn't help the slight grimace that curled his lips as he put his bag back into his locker and began shuffling towards the exit. He was on desk duty today until he finalized his reports from his previous shift and there was nothing about desk duty that enthralled. However,  it was also a way to get people to actually finalize their reports,  which he struggled with.

The crewman had always been described as an exceptional security officer, if not a little slow at the paperwork side of the house, but today, he was struggling. The struggle had begun shortly after taking the desk closest to the coffee pot. It was as if the words were blending together and just as quickly as a thought entered his head, it was gone. Hunter felt like the environmental controls had been turned up just a bit, catching himself pulling at his collar as he tried to focus on his report.  And speaking of his collar, it felt like the dancing spiders on his neck had been replaced by something with much itchier legs.

As the words on the page melted together again, he let his hand fall to the desk with a heavy thud of frustration.  His head fell forward with it and a passing party might notice at that angle that the skin along the back of his neck had a blotchy,  almost purple look to it. It almost looked like abstract shaped purple spots had been tattooed along his collar but even Hunter Maxwell wasn't that adventurous...

== Ens Nat Okehampton, Security NRC. Bio and a picture are here if anyone is curious! ==

Nat had missed most of the excitement of the gathering of the away team and their subsequent departure, just about managing to hear Eli and Nathan leaving with their gear. The brunette had been fixing a couple of PR-1 rifles, the weapons apparently taking the brunt of some wild swings as an exercise had gotten out of control. Still, they were working fine again now, and the armourer-in-training had been released back to her regular duties.

As she wandered back into the main office, chocolate brown eyes took in the usual scene. Groups of officers gearing up for patrol. Paperwork being perpetrated by tired minds. Some of the typically robust exchanges back and forth. It wasn't remotely like anything Okehampton had experienced before she joined the Artemis, but it was rapidly becoming familiar and almost comforting to hear the buzz of conversation around her. She was starting to settle after a difficult opening few weeks, finding her niche on the team and gradually earning their trust.

That's certainly easier now they don't all look at me like I'm the ice queen in the corner she thought to herself. I think that was the hardest thing for me to learn, how to talk to people without coming across like I'm being condescending. I just don't have the same reference points a lot of them do. And it's really embarrassing when I don't get the jokes, even when they do the gestures...

She figured a cup of coffee was deserved to keep her going for the rest of her shift so she headed towards the coffee pot. On her way past, she caught sight of Crewman Maxwell face-down on the desk, and she stopped dead in her tracks.

"Maxwell? Hey, Maxwell! You alright?" Nat asked. Of all the people to find apparently asleep at their post, the well-regarded Hunter Maxwell wasn't an immediate suspect. She reached out to shake him gently, but quickly pulled her hand back when she saw the weird purple spots on the back of his neck. Something made her immediately wary, and she took a half-step back.

"OK, that's not right at all," she murmured to herself, and quickly tapped her commbadge. "Okehampton to Coleman. Chief, I think we've got a problem out here. Maxwell is down at his desk and there's a rash on his neck like nothing I've ever seen before."

Plucking up some courage, Nat gently prodded Maxwell in the ribs.

"Hey! You OK?" She tried again before turning to the nearby crew members. "Did anyone see him go down?" the Ensign asked. "How was he earlier?"

== Tags to Coleman! And GM input please. Does Maxwell respond to Okehampton at all? And what did the nearby crewmen see? ==

With his head bowed and eyes focused on a small imperfection on the desk, Hunter was trying to gather just a tiny bit of focus to propel himself through the current task at hand. No, he did not enjoy the paperwork side of the job but he had never struggled this mightily with such a simple task.

And the struggle only seemed to get worse as someone decided it was a good idea to practically yell his name, the noise level making him think the person was literally right at his shoulder.

His head jerked up from where his chin had been resting on his chest, his body twisting to evaluate the intruding loud speaker.

"Yeah... I'm..." he started to say but Okehamptom, one of the department's younger officers, was already rolling down hill at full steam as if Hunter was dead on the desk.

He couldn't help the frown as she called the Chief, wondering what the Hell he had done for her to feel the need to rat on him to the boss of all people. There were always challenges between the enlisted and officers but there were also lines that didn't need to be leaped across.

He sighed, rather loudly as he got to his feet. His hand rubbed the back of his neck, scratching an itch he had forgotten about, as he considered why the Chief was being brought into something as minor as him losing focus.

"Listen..." He started to say but again,  her attention seemed to move to him and away quicker than he could manage.

"Hey! You OK?" Okehampton said to him, not giving him a chance to answer before throwing words at the next nearest crewmember. "Did anyone see him go down?" the Ensign asked. "How was he earlier?"

The nearest crewmember, Crewman Hassar, looked from Hunter to Okehampton with an expression that clearly showed he had no idea what was going down or who had gone down since Hunter was very much conscious.

"I'm fine. You can stop talking to me like I'm deaf and about me like I'm a ghost and tell me why you felt the need to call the boss on me," Hunter said with a wave of his hands before adding, "I lost focus for five seconds but you've never come across like the tattle telling, slave driver type before so what gives, Oke?"

== Ens Nat Okehampton, Security NRC ==

Nat paused, taking a deep breath to calm herself down. Her mind was racing far too fast and she had to get a grip before she confused poor Maxwell even more than she already had.

"OK, point taken, but can you sit down please?" the brunette replied. "You're worrying me. Take it as a compliment, because normally you're never in any danger of passing out on duty."

She was silent for a moment, trying to phrase things in her head in a way that wouldn't make things worse.

"I didn't call the chief because you were struggling. That happens, we all know that," she said earnestly. "I, er... I called him because you've got something on your neck. It's a really strange looking rash that I've never seen before, and I live with a doctor who likes to show me the grossest things. Combine that with how you're feeling, and I want you to get checked out. It could be nothing. But we're in the middle of the Delta Quadrant in unfamiliar space, so it could also be something, and it needs to be the chief who makes that decision."

It wasn't the most reassuring of pep talks. Okehampton knew that, but there wasn't a lot she could do about it.

"Whilst we're waiting for him, can you run me through your movements the last few hours please?" Nat asked. "Better safe than sorry. If it's nothing, you can call me what you like and I'll make you a coffee of your choice."

Coleman had long ago finished cleaning up in the Lounge, and had went back to his office in order to finish up a few more tasks. If he was going to be up late, he figured he might as well try and get a few things done while the offices were quiet. It wasn’t long, about halfway into his first item on his to-do list, that he heard the stressed voice of one Ensign Natalie Okehampton.

[Okehampton to Coleman.]

There was a little sigh, mixed with a smile, that formed on Damian’s face.

No rest for the wicked.

[Chief, I think we've got a problem out here. Maxwell is down at his desk and there's a rash on his neck like nothing I've ever seen before.]

That smile changed instantly, being swept up and removed by concern for the crewman.

“Understood, on my way.”

Tapping on his console, he pulled up his security officer’s location. It wasn’t far, thankfully. Damian got up from his desk, and stopped near the entrance to grab the first aid kit that he kept in case of emergencies. With the kit in hand, in headed toward the desk that had been indicated to him by the computer. It wasn’t far, and Damian’s fast-walk gait carried him to the location rather quickly.

“…If it's nothing, you can call me what you like and I'll make you a coffee of your choice.”

“Hunter, Nat,” Damian addressed them informally, as was his way when dealing with non-administrative issues.

Carefully, he planted the first aid kit down on the desk across from the queasy looking enlisted officer, nodding to Hassar as he did so. When Damian turned back around, he managed to catch a glimpse of what Okehampton was talking about. However, it wasn’t enough to determine what exactly was happening with him.

“What’s up?” he again was addressing Okehampton and Maxwell, his tone reassuring and sounding open to casual talk.

It didn’t look like the crewman was injured, but he certainly didn’t look good either. He was still talking though, and seemed coherent enough. So, whatever the situation was, it didn’t look to be a medical emergency. Damian didn’t want to leave it until the worst happened though, and so he took a moment to extract a tricorder from the medical kit he had brought with him.

As he waited, listening to any replies, he ran a quick scan on Maxwell to see just how far along the spectrum of ill he fell on.

== Hunter Maxwell ==

At the mention of a rash, Hunter had grabbed the collar of his shirt and craned his neck as if he would somehow manage to see the back of his neck with that strategy. All it did was create a similarity to a dog attempting to catch its tail before he gave up.

"I--" He started to say before the arrival of Coleman and a med kit stopped him.

He finally agreed to Okehampton's request he sit down and slumped into his chair heavily as he watched Coleman pull out the tricolor.

“What’s up?” The COS asked with a non-chalance that Hunter was not feeling.

"I, uh, have a rash, supposedly. Does it really look that bad? I guess it itches a little but like dry skin itchy, not whatever you all are seeing. It freaked Oke out so, uh, how bad is it?"

== Tricorder Readings ==

The readings were fairly bare-boned. Maxwell's heart rate was slightlu elevated as was his blood pressure but nothing outside the high end of the normal range. It could be explained by his recent workout or an anxiety related reaction.

The scan did show that his body was reacting to something but to determine what or to start extent, better equipment and training would be needed.

The reassuring presence of Chief Coleman arrived just in the nick of time. Nat was fast running out of small talk and she had no idea how to respond to Maxwell doing his best to look at the back of his own head. In the situation they found themselves in, it was bizarre enough to make her laugh. Luckily she was able to keep a carefully blank expression.

“Hunter, Nat. What’s up?"

"I, uh, have a rash, supposedly. Does it really look that bad? I guess it itches a little but like dry skin itchy, not whatever you all are seeing. It freaked Oke out so, uh, how bad is it?"

"It's an actual rash," the Ensign replied, trying to keep her voice calm. "Purple spots aren't normal for human skin, and if it's itching then it's definitely doing something it isn't supposed to."

Brown eyes watched Damian take out the tricorder. Okehampton found herself idly tapping her right heel against the carpet, a sure sign she was nervous. She was just about managing to keep a lid on her emotions but it was a close-run thing. She'd seen far too many bad movies about alien plagues and most of them started a lot like this. Something relatively innocuous that spread amongst the unwary. The parallels between those films and the present were all she could think about.

I have got to stop thinking like this... The Chief won't let it happen. And we have a strong medical team a few decks up that will know exactly what to do.

After a few seconds, she found her voice.

"Chief? How's it look?" Nat asked. "Is it worth calling in Sickbay, get a doctor down here to give things a proper check over? I've not seen this before but I'm no medic." The word 'quarantine' had presented itself in the brunette's mind and she was keen to avoid that, seeing as she would almost certainly be blamed as it was her who had called attention to whatever was on the crewman's skin.

"It's an actual rash. Purple spots aren't normal for human skin…” that comment from Okehampton nearly made Damian chuckle loudly, though he managed to hold it in somehow.

However, despite the directness of the comment, it was obvious that she was trying to stay calm; her foot tapping was not going unnoticed by Coleman.

Between Natalie’s report and obvious feelings on the matter, and Hunter’s determination to make it seem like nothing, Coleman was hoping to find more clarification in the readings on the tricorder. Other than Maxwell’s vitals being elevated, which could have been for any number of reasons, there was nothing more that Damian could determine with his level of medical knowledge. There was something there, but what it was didn’t scream medical emergency for the time being.

He is trying to hide it well though. I’ve seen people do the same with fractures and broken bones.

Natalie brought his attention back to the moment by asking him how things looked. Coleman only responded with a shrug as he took one last look at the readings.

"Is it worth calling in Sickbay, get a doctor down here to give things a proper check over? I've not seen this before but I'm no medic."

“I’ve seen a lot of things. Some similar. Others odder. Without more information from someone better trained in medical knowledge than me, I don’t think this will be solved.”

I think that is the answer then isn't it?

With a bit of a sigh, Damian tapped his comm badge.

“Coleman to Sickbay. I have a crewman presenting with a rash, elevated heartrate and blood pressure, and maybe a bit of asthenia. Requesting an examination of Crewman Maxwell to be sure. I don’t think he is ambulatory, so a visit by someone who is free, or site-to-site transport might be the best option. Coleman standing by,” he tapped his badge again.

“We’ll get you checked out just in case Mr. Maxwell,” Coleman upgraded his wording to denote a bit more authority from his decision to involve medical, before turning to Nat.

“If Medical decides to do a site-to-site, I’ll have you go as well so that you can report back to me.”

When the Chief put the call in to Sickbay, Nat felt a surge of relief. It justified her calling things to Coleman’s attention, even if she did feel bad for making Maxwell uncomfortable.

“If Medical decides to do a site-to-site, I’ll have you go as well so that you can report back to me.”

“Yes sir.” The Ensign nodded, her hands clasped together awkwardly behind her back as the Chief Medical Officer replied.

[Tyrol to Coleman. Doctor Sydesh is on her way to you now. Please advise if the crewman becomes worse or unstable prior to her arrival.]

Okehampton could have laughed at that. Of course it was Sydesh. The two roommates had been thrown together on the Talaxian asteroid and looked set to repeat the feat here. And the brunette couldn’t overlook the drama of the colourful history between Beka and Damian, all the while hoping the two of them found common cause again.

“Chief? I’ll go meet the doctor at the front desk, bring her through,” Nat said, before darting away.

Beka stepped off the turbolift and strode quickly towards the Security office. Her red hair was tied back in a rough ponytail, her sleeves rolled up to the elbows and a medical bag slung across her shoulders. As she stepped inside, she nodded to the familiar face of Ensign Reeve who was behind the front desk.

“Doctor Sydesh. I was called?” she said, a ginger eyebrow raised.

“You’re going to behave yourself this time, I hope,” Reeve replied easily. “No more injuring our valiant officers.”

“They really should learn to defend themselves better,” Beka threw back, her easy confidence very much back in place as she grinned and threw her fellow Ensign a cheeky wink.

“Beka! This way please.” Nat Okehampton had appeared behind the desk, and she quickly waved for her friend to follow her. The two officers hurried past the rows of desks until they got to where Maxwell was sat, Coleman standing over him with a tricorder.

“Sir.” The redheaded doctor nodded to the Chief of Security first, as the ranking officer.

“Hunter, isn’t it?” Beka said to the crewman, as she kneeled next to his chair, laid her kitbag on the floor and opened it up. “I’m Dr Sydesh. Although as everyone else will tell you, I also answer to Red, Please Shut Up, or Oh Hell Not Her Again.” There was a disarming smile on her lips as she tried to put the man at ease.

Flipping open her tricorder, she started to run her initial scans.

“So what did you guys see?” Beka asked. “Lieutenant? Anything of interest on your scans?”

“There’s something on his neck,” Okehampton said. “On the back. It’s purple, and it’s new.”

“OK, let’s take a look.” Sydesh rose and gently but firmly turned Maxwell around on his chair so she could see the offending rash. She frowned, and focused the tricorder’s attention on that particular area.

“Hunter? How are you feeling?” she asked. “And can you give me a rough timescale on when things started to feel wrong? An hour? Two hours? Ten minutes?”

== Crewman Hunter Maxwell ==

Hunter, hunched forward with his elbow on his knees as Okehampton and Coleman discussed him like he wasn't even present, didn't even look up when another voice joined the chorus. He glanced up at his name, brown eyes briefly eying a fire-headed doctor, before letting his eyes drop. He was sure that she had introduced herself and said something to try to put him at ease, Doctoring 101, but he was struggling to focus now that there were multiple voices, questions and people to pay attention to. It felt like he was moving at .25 speed while they were moving at 5 speed; the only thing keeping the frustration at that fact at bay was that frustration required energy that he no longer felt like he had.

“Hunter? How are you feeling?” she asked, his head slowly coming up so he could look at the doctor once more. “And can you give me a rough timescale on when things started to feel wrong? An hour? Two hours? Ten minutes?”

His answer was slow, whether because he was trying to assess how he was feeling or struggling to find ways to put that into words that would make sense. "Tired. I can't quite focus, like everything is a little... fuzzy. And apparently, I'm now the proud owner of some high fashion polkadots," he said, trying to manage a grin at the last but it just looked like a weak, tired smile.

"I started feeling tired, oh I don't know, fifteen minutes ago? I worked out before I ate this morning so I thought I might just be hitting that post-workout wall but then, about five minutes after that, I just stopped being able to focus. I honestly thought I might have grabbed some decaf over caf," he waved at his cup of coffee," or that maybe Rollins had thought it would be cute to swap the pots again like an buffoon."

"As for the polkadots, I don't know. My neck itched just a little during breakfast but honestly, that's normal. My ex use to say I was scaly like a dinosaur and while she's an absolute piece of work, she's not wrong on that point. And not a soul in the mess said anything about my new fashion accessory and while most of them are asses, at least one of them probably would have said something, I would hope."

== Tricorder ==

There had been no change to his vitals from when Coleman had scanned him only a few minutes earlier. He was stable and did not appear to be in danger of de-stabilizing in his current state.

The tricorder scans indicated that he was suffering an allergic or allergic-like reaction. Typically, when dealing with allergen related issues, the tricorder could pinpoint the approximate cause of the reaction and in the worst case scenario where it couldn't provide the exact source of the allergen, it could recommend whether it was environmental or dietary. In this instance though, the tricorder provided the result as an inconclusive reading.

== Observations ==

Hunter was sweating slightly, certainly more than he should be in a controlled environment but not entirely impossible if he had finished a work out not long before and had failed to properly cool down. While Sydesh had not met Maxwell before, it was easy to see that his face was paler than normal. The way his eyes moved back and forth seemed like a clear indication that he was, indeed, having a difficult time focusing.

As for his current decoration, they were somewhere between spots and splotches, disappearing below the collar of his uniform.. Categorizing them was less clear as they were too large to be considered hives and had no noticeable raise to them. However, they also didn't match the typical presentation of a rash, where individual red spots bled together to form a large mass of angry, redness. These splotches had a distinctive separation to them, not to mention they were purple. Rashes, hives and chicken poxes, the big three of weird, red spots, were all typically red in Humans.

Tyrol had spent no time at all in getting back to Coleman, which didn’t surprise him as he considered her background. Jasmine always seemed on time, always had a clear outlook on things, and had a sense for when things needed a shakeup to keep things fresh. It was a style that had elements that Damian was wanting to work on. And it was something he considered talking to the CMO about at more length. That time wouldn’t be right away however, as there were more pressing matters.

“Chief? I’ll go meet the doctor at the front desk, bring her through,” Okehampton said without requesting leave from caring for her charge.

On one hand, Coleman was happy to see that Nat was finding her initiative again. There were several training exercises when she had first come aboard, the results of which labelled her as cautious. And the incidents on the Talaxian colony had not helped that either. Slowly though, it seemed like she was coming out of her shell. Damian would have liked to say it was from his guidance, but he knew that wasn’t the case. The real reason was the other person who would be joining them shortly. Sydesh had instilled a fire in the Ensign that hadn’t been there before; or at least, wasn’t the same type of fire. On the other hand, there were moments of apparent recklessness cropping up too; something he also attributed to a certain doctor. However, in Okehampton’s case, he could gently course correct her by teaching a bit of delegation, as well as having her do more First Responder training.

Damian stayed with Hunter to ensure he was alright until Doctor Sydesh arrived. While waiting though, he continued to look through the tricorder and see if there were any changes to the young enlisted officer’s health. It wasn’t long though before he started hearing voices, one booming expressive one in particular, from the Security Complex foyer.

“The doc is almost here,” Damian updated Maxwell, his tone warm and reassuring.

“Sir,” Beka nodded to Damian the moment she approached.

“Doctor Sydesh,” he replied, then stepped back to give Beka the room she needed to do an assessment.

There was some initial pleasantries before Sydesh looked to him again,

“Lieutenant? Anything of interest on your scans?”

“Elevated blood pressure and heart rate,” he transferred the data from his tricorder to her’s, so that she could have a brief history, in case it helped at all.

Okehampton offered up her information as well, which gave Damian time to take a step back and close his tricorder. Putting the device away into the medical kit, he rose back up, staying near, but not too close so that Beka had freedom to conduct her examination. Then, he listened and watched intently.

Beka took in everything that she was seeing and hearing, the stream of information rolling around in her mind as she processed it and tried to work out a plan of action.

I know the tricorders are telling me allergy, both mine and Coleman’s. But this isn’t like any allergic reaction I’ve ever seen. He’s experiencing cerebral impairment and that thing on his neck isn’t a rash. Humans don’t respond to allergies like this.

One thing the redhead didn’t struggle with was confidence in her own decisions. She was used to being the one that had to make the call and do so quickly, something that had been ingrained in her since she was 15. That confidence made her stand out because it really wasn’t a common trait in freshly graduated medics. But even she wanted to be absolutely sure sometimes.

And it’s not just Maxwell I have to worry about either. He said he felt it in the enlisted mess. If he’s picked it up there then that could be dozens of other people wandering around the ship scratching their necks. And he’s been to the gym earlier as well. That’s… That’s a pretty big potential problem.

The redhead made her decision.

“Hunter? I’m going to take you to Sickbay,” Sydesh said, slowly and carefully. “It’s probably an overreaction. But I want to be sure you’re OK.”

She turned to Coleman and Okehampton next, and her expression betrayed the concern she was feeling.

“I won’t lie, this isn’t good,” Beka said, her voice soft as she tried to keep it so only the senior Security officers could hear her as she relayed her concerns. “He’s deteriorating in front of us and I don’t think that’s an allergy. It looks to me like an external infection but I need the equipment in Sickbay to tell me more.”

She paused, before looking to Damian.

“Lieutenant, can I borrow Ensign Okehampton here please? I need a full trace of Maxwell’s movements, where he’s been and who he’s been mixing with. It might yield some more information about what’s happened to him, and potentially we could have to trace everyone who was in the mess with him earlier.”

To give Coleman time to think, the doctor touched her commbadge.

“Sydesh to transporter room. I need an emergency site-to-site please, Crewman Maxwell and myself to the Sickbay isolation lab. On my mark.”

== Tag Coleman! And GM, would you be able to set the scene for me on arrival to Sickbay please? Do the transporter biofilters allow the beam-out? Does Maxwell arrive in the same condition? ==

Watching Beka work, Damian had intended to attempt to glean useful knowledge from seeing her go through her initial triage of Maxwell. As he observed though, it became obvious that he was many levels below her when it came to the speedy efficiency that Sydesh managed. Which was good. Sydesh had been trained for that exact profession, so it was only right that she be as skilled at it as she was. But being a part of Star Fleet meant being cross-trained in many different areas, because sometimes it took an entire ship’s worth of effort to complete a task or project. The realization Coleman was having, was that he needed to brush up on those other cross-trained skills a bit more, having let them lax as he focused more on his Department; or simply having not been formally educated to a high enough level. All of that would have to wait, as Beka finally spoke after some time,

“Hunter? I’m going to take you to Sickbay.”

Yet another brow raise, this time mixed with no small amount of concern, came to Damian’s full outward expression. He didn’t realize that it was that dire of a situation. However, he was now glad that perhaps he was more on point with his initial triage than he had thought. Sydesh did explain that it might be an overreaction, which muddled things a bit. However, it was best to ensure that Hunter got appropriate care in a timeframe where things could still be treated.

“I won’t lie, this isn’t good. He’s deteriorating in front of us and I don’t think that’s an allergy,” Sydesh spoke lowly, with a classic and rehearsed air of confidentiality.

Coleman had to remind himself that he wasn’t a medical professional, so his opinion on what was happening wasn’t a fully informed one. While he might agree with Beka that the rash didn’t look like an allergy, he didn’t have full knowledge about what an alien induced allergy might look like on someone. Or an alien rash for that matter. The same thoughts came to his mind as he broke eye contact with Beka to look at Hunter. The man didn’t seem to be deteriorating like she had said. But perhaps there was something on the scans that the doctor interpreted as worsening?

“Lieutenant,” her voice brought him back and focused on her, “can I borrow Ensign Okehampton here please?

Sydesh continued, explaining the situation and what she needed, before quickly moving on to contacting the transporter team. It gave him a moment to think on it all, which was needed.

Security is good at investigating, but I’m not sure we are properly trained to do official contact tracing. It would be better to involve other Medical staff for that sort of thing. Though, she might team Oke up with someone. I can’t assume that though.

After Beka had finished with her comm to the transporter room, he spoke up.

“Of course you can borrow Ensign Okehampton. Though, I will warn you that we aren’t specifically trained in all elements of contact tracing. Tracking people down? Following their movements? No problem. But you may want to pair someone up with Natalie who knows the specific medical side of things that may be a requirement for all of this.”

There was a brief pause, as he regarded Hunter, then Natalie, and finally turned back to Beka fully. His concern was obvious.

“Please keep me informed of Crewman Maxwell’s progress. And thank you, Doctor Sydesh.”

He tried to smile through the worry. Damian was genuinely grateful for Beka's help, but he couldn't hide his unease at one his being ill.

Beka nodded.

“I understand,” she replied. “Just having Security expertise in tracking people through would speed things up immensely. Thank you.”

Check me out being all respectful… the redhead thought to herself. It still doesn’t sit right, all this yes sir, no sir bollocks. I have a job to do but I have to make sure I phrase everything correctly or I can look forward to being hauled over the coals again. It’s just… Priorities. I guess I have to do what I have to do in order to get my patient out of here.

“Please keep me informed of Crewman Maxwell’s progress. And thank you, Doctor Sydesh,” Coleman replied, his concern obvious in his voice. Not for the first time, Beka regretted how hard she’d gone after him on someone else’s say-so. She had been wrong and even though she’d apologised profusely she still felt guilty.

“Will do, sir,” Sydesh replied. She turned to Nat, who looked decidedly uncomfortable, and threw a reassuring arm around her roommate’s slender shoulders. “You ready?”

“As I’ll ever be…” the brunette replied.

“Don’t worry, you’ll be fine,” Beka said calmly. She tapped her commbadge.

“Sydesh to Transporter Room. Ready.”

A few moments later, the three of them beamed away to Sickbay.
