== Wedding day ==

In the days leading up to the wedding, a visit had been made with Lycians as well as the Athenians, and several science collaborations begun to discuss areas of interest and share information. By the time that the wedding day arrived, biometric data for the Star Fleet guests had been sent to Athenia, and id microchips created and delivered to the ship which were to be attached on the inside of the wrist (or other suitable hairless area of the skin) like a temporary tattoo which would be scanned on entry to the Grand Palace gardens along with biometric scans. These would also keep track of the whereabouts of guests.

The day would involve an informal garden drinks reception before the wedding ceremony, the ceremony itself taking place inside the palace in the Blue Hall, with a formal banquet later and the night ending with fireworks and entertainment in the gardens.

The Titania crew would arrive in batches at the entry cordon to the palace gardens. Each guest would pass through screening and awaiting them was a fleet of self-driving open-top hovercars ready to ferry guests up to the Palace were the festivities would take place.

Flying through the beautiful grounds of the Palace, all manner of trees and shrubbery were visible, ornamental stone buildings, elaborate topiary, flower beds and fountains.

The chirping of avian species could be heard and the eagle-eyed would spot them flitting from tree to tree or swooping through the air above the garden. The sun was pleasantly warm without being stifling. Whether by luck or climate control, the weather was perfect.

The hovercars deposited the guests on a purple-coloured carpet on the south western facade of the palace. The carpet led around the building towards a large and exquisitely manicured lawn where other guests had already gathered and were mingling, dressed in their wedding finery. The Lycians and Athenians had subtly different fashions which the keener more aesthetic eye might notice. Long banquet tables had been laid out with food and drinks. Arches garlanded with greenery and trellises divided the area further. Stone benches were arranged around the periphery, and luscious blooms and gorgeous greenery were everywhere.

Beyond this area, pathways led into the rest of the palace grounds, which were clearly huge. There were holographic signs pointing in the direction of attractions such as “The Herb Garden”, “The Gazebo”, and The Glasshouse.” The signs cycled through what must by Athenian and Lycian languages as well as Federation Standard. One could wander off and get lost in the grounds quite easily. Pathways were adorned with decorative flower-filled urns and stone benches. Lanterns and lights hung from trees which would surely look spectacular at night.

The Palace guards were present in ceremonial garb, and wearing their impressive decorative swords. Otherwise, outside of the entry cordon, the visible presence of security was low key.

The long banquet tables were bedecked with flower arrangements and laden with a selection of food and drink. This included bowls of exotic fruits, trays of brightly coloured sweets, and platters of many different types of hors d'oeuvres. Everything was small and bite-sized. Pressing a haptic interface on each table would bring up a holographic display which described each of the foods and drinks and listed ingredients. As was Athenian custom, there were no alcoholic beverages. There was a wide selection of refreshments though, including sparkling fruit drinks, juices, and herbal drinks laid out on trays. Smartly attired serving staff were also taking trays of drinks around the guests.

The Grand Palace itself was imposing, an architectural style that was reminiscent of byzantine and gothic secular Earth styles, primarily in white, blue and gold colours. Tall thin hexagonal towers were at the four corners of the building and the main part had three tiered levels with open terraces, the middle one was painted deep blue and flecked with gold stars. Smaller domed towers were visible in the central building. Duel stone staircases led up to the first tier, wrapping around the front of the building in a sweeping semi circle.

The trickling sounds from various water features was accompanied by a small string orchestra playing relaxing music.

<<TI/D05 - Crew Quarters<<

His second trip into the Palace and Gardens felt like an old familiar trail to Yaga now. The hovercars made it effortless. After advising fellow crewmates who asked or looked lost, he eventually found a nice respite near the orchestral music and sat down on the edge of a trickling fountain.

Music was a universal math in many ways, and as he opened the tube of charcoals and began sketching the string players on the sketchpad balanced on his knee, he listened to learn the Athenian mode of octaves and keys.

The Captain beamed directly down to the entrance cordon along with the First Officer and a few others, all in pristine dress whites. She immediately checked her surroundings and noted the security arrangements in place and the guards operating the cordon. Everything seemed relaxed and efficient.

She took a deep breath of the air, closed her eyes and allowed herself to enjoy the feeling of a real sun on her face.
The weather was perfect. She had not been looking forward such a formal diplomatic occasion, but suddenly felt more positive, perhaps influenced by the glorious weather or something else.

The Captain looked down at the small microchip 'tattoo' on her wrist before passing through the cordon. Security processing was almost instantaneous and they passed through into the outer grounds of the Grand Palace.

The fleet of open-topped anti-grav cars waiting to chauffeur them to the venue was a nice touch, and allowed views of the picturesque gardens on the short trip. Once aboard, they were taken at a sedate pace allowing them to savour things. The Grand Palace itself soon became visible.

Wow...

She was not easily impressed but this was truly spectacular and had a fairytale quality.

Though she had come to view their attendance at the wedding as a chore, it was hard not to be awed. The setting was magnificent, but it was also a truly a momentous occasion for these two planets. Recently divided in hostility and distrust and now forming a peaceful union, it was a historical landmark that would change things for them forever.

And especially if they choose Federation membership.

Disembarking on a lush purple carpet next to the edifice of the Grand Palace, the garden had been laid out with tables of refreshments and people were mingling.

“Maybe this won’t be so bad... even enjoyable.” She said to Talion.

The prospect of the 17-course banquet was still daunting.

“Though I’m not sure I can make polite conversation for 17-courses during dinner.”

They had received their seating plans, and all the Star Fleet guests were seated next to someone from Athenia and Lycia on either side. Clearly they were going to have to make polite conversation. At times like this she thought it might be a good thing if they did serve alcohol as it would make the time pass easier...

...or perhaps not!

Jane wandered towards the table of drinks. There was a liquid in a beautiful decorative glass dispenser that looked like lemonade and had flowers and greenery floating in it.

I assume I am meant to drink this and not clean my hands with it...

She noticed the haptic display on the table and tapped it to learn the dispenser was filled with a beverage made with fruit and herbs.

She took a glass and half filled it with the chilled liquid. It smelled citrusy and herbal, familiar but not a smell she could name. Taking a glug, she savoured the taste.

Pretty much lemonade but floral...

It was refreshing so she filled up the glass.

A small string orchestra was playing relaxing music.

Getting lost in the gardens seemed like a good idea.

If only...

Lois hated Dress whites! I was not a colour that suited her. She preferred to wear darker colours. But full official functions dress uniform was on the menu, so that’s what it had to be.

She was tempted to place the temporary security bio tattoo on her forehead.

Left check on my bottom may be better? That could be interesting?

Lois finally settled on her right wrist for the bio-ID tattoo. These sorts of things always gave her a feeling of being in a concentration camp, as in many world’s histories attested to prisoners being tattoo for ID purposes Trill, Earth, Falconia, and others came to mind. The fact that it was temporary didn’t make much difference.

Lois arrived in a timely manner with other officers from the Titania and they were assured through security and sent on a pleasant journey in an silent antigrav vehicle. It reminded her of an experience on earth, when with a potential partner, they road together in his ancient 2020 Camaro convertible combustion engine vehicle. The power and the noise. That was a thrill. Much more that the potential partner.

The palace was spectacular, the grounds immaculate, and..

the food… the Food… Hey come on! No alcohol? This is going to be a dull wedding.

Lois headed towards where the music was coming from with non alcoholic drink in hand. She had chosen a savory drink. It tasted something like a Claytons on earth.

Spying another white coated officer she sat and tried to enjoy this wedding. Lois had often dreamed of a fair tail wedding for herself, this seemed as close as she would ever get.

“Lt Mo, how are you? Impressed?” Dr. Lim said gesturing to their surrounds.

The peripheral flash of a fit white uniform taking a seat next to him relaxed his scribbling fingers, and he turned his head to see who it was.

“Lt. Mo, how are you?” Lois asked over her whiskey-colored drink. He thought her spots seemed to match her beverage more than her dress uniform.

“Doctor Lim,” Yaga’s voice was warm, and his shoulder rocked as he leaned towards Lois slightly before resuming his black and white shading.

“Impressed?” she asked of their surroundings.

His hand paused again as he looked up and around. Lois had the kind of classic voice you wanted to be an ice cube and float around in, and it fit the music on the air perfectly.

Pulling his ear lobe as he looked back at her, he seemed to be shaking his head no but answered instead with praise. “It’s all seems about as perfect as a Romulan holo-novel,” his low voice replied. The briefly widening stretch of his eyes back to her seemed to convey his response was a wary flare of sarcasm. He looked back at the musicians, his thumb and index fingering the charcoal stick hovering over the paper like one of the anti-grav limos as he let out a quick breath.

As they arrived, Talion looked around and took it all in. He remained silent as they proceeded to the festivities. He accompanied the Captain, maintaining an official appearance, but trying to keep it relaxed enough that it didn't draw too much attention. He took care not to appear as if he were at attention or being too stiff, but he deliberately kept to one side of the Captain and her walking just enough ahead that she could be seen to be leading them. Until more of the diplomatic environment revealed itself, he would operate on certain defaults for this gathering.

Surprisingly, Talion looked rather natural and almost comfortable in his dress uniform. Experience had taught him how to have it fit so that he could move quite comfortably. For a man who liked to look like a beach bum off duty, his uniforms were always crisp and professional. Being dressed up for the wedding, he cleaned up very well, making a rather dashing second for the Captain and her own finery. They made an impressive pair.

Opting for a drink that was a bit of citrus with a hint of what might have been mint, Alex remained close to the Captain. He took a sip and then simply said in a near whisper to Fields, "Let the games begin..."

Kotho had decided that she would not be a laggard or a wallflower; and she jumped at the chance to accompany the Captain and First Officer beam-down to the planet…she was the senior of the two ACEs of the Chief Engineer, and thus while planet side, Kotho would be Titania’s defacto Chief Engineer….and she was determined to make herself easily accessible to the Commanding officers.

Kotho had assumed that Thorn would (and would like to) accompany Science Officer Killrama and thus, she had called on her other friend that was also on the away team list.

The Lieutenant Junior Grade felt considerable pride in her Class A uniform, a predominantly light gray affair, though with white collar, neck and shoulder panels, and belt, Science Blue lateral stripe at the upper chest and vertical blue stripe down the outside of each pant leg. Just below the jacket’s fastening point, two medals were placed there…a Gold Star and Star Fleet Commendation Medals. Black (polished to a high gloss) boots rounded out ensemble.

Kotho sported her typical dark-brown lion-mane hairstyle and her deeply tanned complexion contrasted nicely with the crisp brightness of the uniform. What was missing of course, and it certainly felt as if she had forgotten something…such as work belt with a hyperspanner kit, an Engineering tricorder, and PADD…as she fidgeted with her hands for some seconds before clasping them behind her back as she strolled about.

Kotho had marveled at the region’s natural and constructed beauty…the Grand Palace itself was an incredible feat of engineering, a massive structure, that almost seemed too lithe and decorative to support its own weight…

…and therein lies the true magic…material science and physical principals, metallurgy, and the like…

And amongst the gardens, topiaries, fountains, and benches, there was a certain flair or aesthetic that was highly reminiscent of many Terran (fantasy) stories involving Elfin and Elfin-like peoples…the ‘world’ of faerie. It was also not lost on the human-looking Klingon how coincidental it is, that a starship named after a literary Queen of the Faeries, had her first mission to a pair of worlds that exhibited faerie-like traits…

…even the ID tattoo was a pleasing hieroglyph-like shape…

“Yea, they look nice…” her colleague and friend Taylor said holding out his left wrist…

“…but for some reason…mine itches like hell.”

Taylor’s wrist with the ID tag-tattoo was indeed, noticeably red…

“Stop scratching at it!” Kotho admonished under her breath.

It was then that Kotho spotted Titania’s CMO with Kurasa’s star Security pupil, the former Middy, now Lieutenant Jay Gee Mo, within easy ear shot of the

“Look…” Kotho indicated the lovely dark-haired Chief Medical Officer…

“…there’s the Doctor Lim, I’m sure she has an ointment or something.”

“Ha!” Taylor’s low, somewhat gravelly voice coughed…

“Truth be told…I find this less of an irritant than the Good Doctor.”

Tamara looked up and turned her head at the man, surprised at the striking and unexpected comment…

…what’s going on there...?

The pair, stopped at the food table, leaving substantial paces for Titania’s Captain and FO to have some space. Taylor procured a small plate and then immediately went after an assortment of the exotic fruit pieces. Kotho decided on a few of the more substantial morsels…basically savory filled pastry bites…

It was the first time Zamha had worn his Class A uniform since graduation. A quick cycle in the sonic shower freshened it up, and he remembered to add his new ribbons.

He took a quick look at himself in the lavatory mirror. Dark green skin, spotless white uniform. The photographer recording his graduation holo had had a terrible time getting the white balance right.

He still felt silly taking the turbolift to go up one deck to get to transporter room 1.

It looked like most of the officers beaming down to the planet had already gone. Well, at least he wasn't part of the crush.

But his mood brightened considerably once he materialized on the surface.

Planet twelve.

He wished they'd allowed tricorders or holocameras.

He noticed one of the guards gesturing to him. "Please step aside. You have something in you pockets I need to examine."

"OH! Of course!" Zamha followed the guard a short distance and reached into his jacket breast pocket, pulling out a loaded hypospray, and handed it to the guard. The display indicated the hypo was loaded with "Selay antivenom 100cc."

"I have never in my entire life needed to defend myself that way, but I always carry the hypo. I'm a nurse, and trained in its proper use. Also, while we're here, who do I need to speak to about special dietary requirements?"

Shione and Jelaya arrived with the Captain's party and moved through the security checkpoint with everything happening as smoothly as predicted by the Athenian Captain.

As with most gatherings Shione's height provided her with an advantage of perspective and as was her habit she carefully perused the grounds and the gathering. However being tall also meant that she didn't normally escape the attention of others and nodded in the direction of Alex, and the Captain as she followed them through the security and onward to the celebration.

She noticed that along with Fields and Talion that Mo, Kotho, Lim, Taylor, and Zamha had arrived, but she closed the distance standing across the table from the Captain and Alex.

She nodded to both speaking at a volume intended for their ears; "It would appear that we are starting to arrive in good order Captain. Would you prefer we move about and mingle or for the time being allow the locals to take note of us first?"

Jelaya squeezed the Hybrid Vulcan's arm; she knew that Shione was also less than comfortable in large gatherings of strangers; especially unarmed; and to distract her she reached for a delicacy that looked like a seafood delicacy and popped it into her mate's mouth, almost catching her by surprise but it did allow the furry engineer to add her own comment to Shione's; quipping,

"Don't mind her Captain; you know how much she loves to be unarmed in a gathering of strangers." Grinning to make it clear her comment was intended to be facetious.

The guard handed back the hypospray. "Of course, sir." he accepted his explanation."All food and beverages are clearly labelled, but your ship has provided dietary information including on potential allergens by individuals, and your ID chip will alert you if you attempt to take something that has been flagged."

He smiled.

Jane looked around the guests who were mingling. The Star Fleet contingent was already attracting attention she noticed. It must be highly unusual for these people to see aliens and might well be the first time for most. The crew made up a diverse contingent from the different Federation worlds and it must be quite the show for the natives...

"Looks like we're going to be an exotic attraction." She said with a half grin.

Jane watched Taylor slyly as he chatted to Kotho and they helped themselves at the table. Then the CoS and her imzadi wandered over.

"It would appear that we are starting to arrive in good order Captain. Would you prefer we move about and mingle or for the time being allow the locals to take note of us first?"

She smiled.

"I think they're already taking good note. It's a wedding.... go mingle. enjoy yourself." She replied. "Just don't do anything sneaky." Her eyes narrowed slightly. She was more disappointed than annoyed with what had reportedly happened on the Security visit. If this had been a first contact situation that might have been an epic fail, and they could all have been going home immediately... or worse.

She despaired at the light in which this potentially presented the Federation.

What were they thinking?

Jane herself was a Security officer by training and former CoS. Security was not the galactic police, not the marines, and not the intelligence service. The job of Security was to keep people safe and to keep the peace, it might involve being all or some of those things some of the time, but, most of all, it was conducted by using your head, and was always best done with a light touch. The use of psychology got you a lot further in preventing and spotting trouble before it happened than subterfuge when it came to diplomatic and first contact missions. In this case, they were guests on a friendly planet not unknown to the Federation. They had to trust to the security provided and they most certainly should not do anything deceptive while guests here.

She understood why this incident had happened. The Copernicus had had some tough first contact missions in recent years, where attempts to make peaceful contact had gone wrong or ended with hostilities. But Star Fleet had to be better than this. This was a not first contact, and there was no reason or evidence to act in an underhand way with these people or treat them with suspicion. The Federation was not a collection of imperialist asshats out to swallow up and impose their dominion over sovereign species.

Al-Mazi looked uncomfortable, which was something she hadn't noticed before about Kurasa's partner.

"Don't mind her Captain; you know how much she loves to be unarmed in a gathering of strangers."

The Captain looked puzzled and cocked her head. She knew very little about Mirak culture, but were they always armed in the presence of any strangers? She wondered if they were an especially paranoid culture or if the Mirak homeworld was really that dangerous. Then she remembered Al Mazi's service record, and that she was actually brought up in San Francisco. This made even more baffled by the comment.. The CoS was grinning, so she assumed this was intended to be a joke, but Jane didn't get it.

The CoS herself had brought a ceremonial sword with her which looked Japanese. This was unlikely to be a Vulcan or Betazoid cultural item and probably an excuse to bring a weapon, though Jane didn't blame her for it.

She considered for a minute if would she have done the same when in Kurasa's position. Back when Captain Godard and then Gloria Dys were COs, going on away missions 'armed for bear' as Gloria used to call it, was frowned upon. In her experience it often didn't make anything safer either. Fire was met with fire. It was almost like some capricious deity, watching from the heavens, was toying with them, ready to manipulate events in accordance with these mortals' best laid plans.

It was a beautiful looking sword, and probably would be a conversation piece, and that was certainly no bad thing when all of them would have to make polite conversation for 17 courses during dinner.

"I think we should definitely mingle." She said. Otherwise they looked like wallflowers.

Kalli arrived on the planet and although she was surrounded by people, she felt very alone. She had never attended an official function in her short career, so she had no idea what was expected of her. Doing her best to just blend in, she simply moved out of the way of others arriving.

Quickly noticing that there were vehicles that were being used, Kalli strolled that direction. That was when she spotted Barjax.

It was hard to miss the large Mirak. At first her heart raced, a smile instantly appearing on her face. Then she realized he might still be angry with her and perhaps not want to talk to her yet. A heavy sigh escaped the young woman as the struggle within her continued.

There was something about them bothering the Captain; despite her reply inviting them to mingle. Maybe it's me?

She was fairly sure it wasn't the sword as she knew that Shione had permission to bring it; but it could have been something about her trip to the planet?

Jelaya was pleased that Shione had brought the Katana. The sword was one of her most highly prized possessions and Jelaya knew from her study of the Samurai culture that Shione did; at least in part; consider it to be profoundly connected to her personal honour. She remembered how devastated she had been when it appeared to have disappeared with the Reciprocity only to be mysteriously returned.

Rather than risk upsetting her mate, Jelaya banished those thoughts from her mind lest the anxiety be passed on through their mate bond. She picked a few items from a nearby tray and offered them to Shione who absent mindedly picked at one and ate it; her head on a swivel as though she was looking for someone or something.

"Relax M' love you're not on duty and besides it's our first chance for a night out since Aashaa was born," It was true the missions along with the  transition to a new ship had kept them both extremely busy and both of them placed a very high value on 'Family time',

Looking around she noticed her fellow Engineer and knowing how uncomfortable Kalil was in new surroundings Jelaya locked her arm around Shione's arm and moved her over to where the young woman was standing looking like she'd rather be anywhere than here,

"Hi Kalil," Jelaya greeted her shy friend, "walk with us and let's take a look around, ok?"

Kalli was staring at Barjax, frozen with indecision, torn between walking over and saying what she needed to or waiting to see if he noticed her and maybe approached her and wanted to talk. Part of her deeply wanted him to do that. She knew it was crazy, but her heart ached for that version to play out.

As Kalli was distracted by her internal dilemma, Jelaya slid up next to her and spoke in that warm and friendly way she had of speaking. Kalli didn't jump, as she was so well known to do, but simply turned to look at her. At first she seemed to then notice that she was not alone in the crowd. After a second, her eyes focused on Jelaya and it registered what she had said. The generosity of the offer struck her and she smiled. She genuinely liked Jelaya, though she had not really gotten to know her well. Kalli was discovering quite a fondness for the Mirak in general.

Giving a single nod to Jelaya, Kalli replied, "Thanks."

She glanced back at Barjax once more before resolving herself to trying to find another moment to speak with him about what was on her mind. Pushing that matter from her immediate thoughts, she turned to focus on what was right in front of her. Kalli was grateful for the social rescue effort of fellow Engineer. Her single word reply left her feeling like she should say more, but her smile and moving next to Jelaya said more.

==fountain by the string orchestra==

Soul-stirring, impassioned, focused. The woman playing the second violin had taken up a reprisal of the moving theme of the serenade passed off from the first seats, who now energetically soared away from it. Still, she was the kite string, the anchor for her orchestral superiors. Her musical pull was the hand that allowed the first violins to dance over the event, strong on the breeze, serpentine musical tail just out of reach above from the listener's grasp. The cello seemed to come to her aid and help strengthen her pull, the first violins wavering high on the wind.

It was entirely Athenian, or at least Busant, and reminded Yaga that the universe held many more undiscovered Ralph Vaughn Williams, Mendelssohns', and Suks.

Finishing his charcoal sketch of the secondary but essential violin player, Yaga signed it with a Starfleet symbol, turning to Lois as he tore the sheet from his sketchpad.

“Remember, Doctor, face the Duke. Kiss the Queen’s hand. And we have only six minutes from the first bell to take our seat before we lose our place in this game of musical chairs,” he offered the thoughtful Trill Doctor.

Before starting their next piece, Yaga wandered into the orchestra, saying hello, praising them for their talent, and giving his charcoal sketch to the violin player before quickly moving on through them.

>>Palace guest arrival courtyard>>

Having spotted his next subject over the musicians, Yaga found a comfortable spot at the bottom of the embrace of the outer stairs that put him in a shrub’s shade behind the hovercar valets. He chatted playfully with the official door-openers and living handrails as they helped the guests off the rotating train of individual hovercars. They joked and laughed together, at least Yaga did, as he drew, and some glanced at his work in progress. While sketching the valets and stylish hovercraft more than the varied riders, his eye noted the passing guests in their splendor—more treats, arriving by magical floating plates to the fairytale wedding feast.

Signing the sketch with the Starfleet symbol once again, Yaga laid it upon the seat of a passing empty hovercar, cycling back to the outer gates to pick up yet another load of party-goers. He strode up the stairs energetically, not running but filled with enthusiasm at a swim in another culture's gene pool.

>>outer Palace steps>>

He passed the cream rising up the stairs to the Palace, but he was far more the butter dasher than the crème à fouetter he filtered through. He wished to immerse his study in the curds of the Busant society, the less fortunate but more enduring workers who made cheese off this event rather than an airy whipping to top off the show.

>>Blue Hall dining tables>>

Finding his seat, which was made far more accessible by the microchip and helpful staff but still daunting given the sheer scale of 500 chairs and place settings, Yaga found a comfortable spot by his newest comrade, the statuesque woman with the Athenian astrolabe. He glanced at his tracking microchip as he drew and imagined smudging a tiny charcoal spot on the woman’s statue wrist to invite her into the feast, but thought better of it. The low-jacking would serve the same humor.
A butler stood ready by one of the many half-concealed servant doors, and Yaga began to sketch him instead. Staff came and went, and the Athenian servant seemed to be ‘one the bench,’ as it were.
If this were a Modern Service, this butler awaited the signal to bring out covered plates en masse. Old Earth Silver Service would have this butler serve each guest off of a large platter in almost ceremonial grandeur. Butlered Service would have the man bring out all the food for his assigned chairs at once and serve them plates or place them on the table before the hungry guests. Kamchatka born Yaga was more familiar with the traditional Russian Service, one that did not transport up the entire feast in an overwhelming display of grandeur but fed the courses out gently, slowly, more like the ongoing serenades of the string musicians outside than a crashing orchestra at the crescendo of a banquet symphony.

As his sketch of the butler grew in detail, he could only guess at the motivations and drive of the Athenian's servitude. In so many cultures, that butler’s seeming peripheral purpose was a coveted and proud career, sought and fought after, yet in so many others, it was merely abject.

Gregariously chatting with any Busant guests who shared or passed his assigned table area, Yaga also made it a point to introduce himself to the butler and ask his name. Finally, he signed the sketch with the Starfleet symbol and deftly set it on a passing tray, high on a waiter’s shoulder, returning to the kitchen like an empty hovercar back to the gate for more.

==GM Input please:
Are the Athenians and Lycians easy to tell apart by their species' physical differences, besides their different clothing, or is Yaga at a loss to tell one planet’s guests from the other?
Besides clothing and demeanor, do the servants appear physically different from the guests?
Are the Busant talkative or hesitant around Titanians?==

== With Kotho ==

“Alright then, perhaps you should have an Athenian or Lycian medic look at it.” Kotho stated…

…in reference to the obvious dull pink rash on and around the temporary security tattoos that the Tatiana crew had been outfitted with.

“An excellent idea…” Taylor agreed, his eyes and head turning to see if a First Aid station was prominently displayed.

There was nothing immediately obvious, amongst the festive and decorative grounds, so Taylor turned his attention to one of the serving staff and asked:

“Excuse me, hi…can you point out a medical or healer person or team, please?”

“Of course…” the immaculately dressed wait individual said…

…and with both hands raised, fingers touching, a direction was pointed out…

…where…?

“I’ve got it.” Kotho said, just as Taylor shook his head in mild embarrassment…

…he finally recalled Athenia’s symbol for the healing arts, and the tent setup save for the symbol, was as innocuous as every other tent.

 “Thanks Lieutenant…” Taylor said…

“…feel free to mingle while I go take of this.”

“Alright…Lieutenant.” Kotho responded in kind.

Her thin smile indicated that she had (likely) taken no offense.

Next, the well cleaned up Science Officer looking sharp in his Dress Whites, took several steps in the direction he wished to go, and then stopped. Taylor had thought he had seen Nurse Zamha on the grounds, and he paused to look around for him…

Second only to Killrama, the Selay was easy to identify amongst the various attendees, his emerald cowled head appeared like a lantern against the white and light gray of the Class A uniform. With purposeful long strides, the lanky Science Officer headed in Zamha’s direction.

He also noted Fields whereabouts…

…Captain Fields…

…with Talion…

It wasn’t that he was jealous of Talion’s proximity to Fields, (slightly) envious maybe, it was just the whole new relationship thing. Fortunately, he was a grown and seasoned adult, and not ruled by the passions that often lead young persons to less than desirable results…

…I wouldn’t go back to my teens for love or money…

…and across the table, Kurasa and her mate, Al-Mazi, had moved away from the COs and towards someone that was just outside of his perception. And then he resumed his path to the Titania medic. And once within easy earshot, Taylor announced:

“Nurse Zamha.”

And once close enough, Taylor showed the medic his wrist with the inflamed, light-red rash amongst and around the tattoo ID…

“I have an allergic reaction apparently…” Taylor began…

“…as we are here, and I think a nice cross-cultural learning experience, would you attend with me as I go seek treatment from the indigenous healing staff?”

Taylor indicated the ‘First Aid’ tent with his other arm…

The FO was taking great care to not say much as they observed their surroundings. Remaining in a loose orbit of the CO, he dared to sample some of the food at one of the tables. He was interested in finding out what kind of spices and seasonings they favored. You could tell a great deal about a culture by the flavors they showcased at such cultural events. The scientist in him was taking in all of the details around him and logging it all away in the back of his mind. He felt that the best possible thing he could do right now was to observe and take notes in order to give the most complete analysis possible when called upon to do so.

He noticed one of Mo's drawings that had been set nearby. It was quite good. The man had artistic skills and a good eye for detail. Before Talion could approach though, the man disappeared, moving like a butterfly from one area to the next and eventually was out of sight. Talion grinned at Mo's wealth of energy and enthusiasm. He remembered having that at one time. He still had energy and the ability to pursue his passions, it was simply that he no longer felt as passionately about his interests. Life had tempered him a bit.

As Kalli slowly made her way around with Shione and Jelaya, she cautiously tested some of the less daring looking snacks available. Still unable to get her mind entirely off of Barjax, she decided to do her best to at least move her brain off on a related tangent.

Stepping closer to Jelaya to speak in a casual and conversational tone, she asked, "What kind of wedding did you and Shione have? Were both of your families able to be there? I hear that lots of weddings within Star Fleet are small because it is so hard getting family together and coordinating things when assigned to a ship. I can't imagine how difficult such things are." She then shook her head slowly and rolled her eyes, "I'm a bit jealous that you actually even have a child on the ship. You guys really have it all right now."

Mo answered the good Doctor after a moment of sketching, “It’s all seems about as perfect as a Romulan holo-novel,” his low voice replied. The briefly widening stretch of his eyes back to her seemed to convey his response was a wary flare of sarcasm. He looked back at the musicians, his thumb and index fingering the charcoal stick hovering over the paper like one of the anti-grav limos as he let out a quick breath

Sarcasm, Mr Mo, I'm surprised . I think it's more like what ancient Terrans described as... Now what was that name? I read it about the phenomena from their early twentieth century history. 'Disney earth' no... Disney ground? no... Disney Land that's it!"

Mo's interest had refocused.

“Remember, Doctor, face the Duke. Kiss the Queen’s hand. And we have only six minutes from the first bell to take our seat before we lose our place in this game of musical chairs,” he offered the thoughtful Trill Doctor as he moved off to converse with the orchestra.

Dr Lim didn't know what to do next.

Food is a good idea...

She began to make her way back to were the food was, thinking as she walked...

It's times like these that I wish I had a partner to share these moments with, but the chance of that is nearly gone. I suppose medicine is my partner now?

Shione was pleased to see Kalil come out of her shell and actually engage in conversation. She knew that Jelaya considered her a friend and a quick check with her Imzadi confirmed that this social activity was a very good sign, and in an effort to expand Ens. Thorn's social circle she chose to speak.

Shione gave the young woman a very warm smile and a gentle squeeze of her shoulder as she happily replied. "Thank you for asking Kalil, we did have a number of issues with getting people to the wedding as it was held on Betazed which you know is quite a distance for many to travel, but to be truthful we were both so ecstatic to have the ceremony that with our focus being so much on each other that we hardly noticed."

She felt Jelaya release a mental breath as the young woman would not have known that Jelaya's family were dead and it would have embarrassed her ~Thank you love, I would have hated to see her retreat back into her shell~

"We took a while between our marriage and conception as we were both busy aboard the Cop at the time, but once we found a suitable male donor we went ahead and she left the ship spending the last months prior to birth on Betazed with my family as they are both Physicians; however." And she paused "If I wasn't a Senior officer it might have been a different story as keeping us together on ship would have been a nightmare."

As she spoke Jelaya spotted a familiar seven foot Leo approaching and reacted as he approached without acknowledging either of the other two present.

Jelaya was proud of more than just Kalil for actually initiating a conversation but also of Shione for stepping in to make herself someone that Kalil might then feel comfortable approaching in the future.

Her mate handled the awkward question about her parents very well and did a surprisingly good job for a...~Gun toting red shirt~ And she got a silent chuckle from Shione at that, but she spotted the gigantic Leo Scientist closing with the trio looking like he was on a mission and indeed just as she stepped up he blurted out a question for Kalil without so much as a proper greeting of the Senior officer talking to her and found herself a bit miffed for her own sake.

I am a full Lieutenant after all; I think a bit of a protocol lesson is called for. She mused silently.

“Kalli, can we talk.” Called Barjax.

Before either of the other two could react Jelaya moved closer to the male and spoke sotto voce to keep the conversation private.

She smiled despite her annoyance at his likely unintended rudeness. "Greetings Ensign Killrama; perhaps you didn't see that Kalil was speaking with two officers both of whom are senior to you. It is considered proper protocol to at least make polite greetings to all present before attempting to end their conversation."

Barjax would recognize the expression on the Onca female's face, as well as her tone; as that of an elder; mildly scolding a youngster; neither angry nor recriminating; simply instructing the younger one in proper manners.

After finishing with the courteous security detail, Zamha proceeded into the grounds, seeing that the present Federation officers were well distributed, not clustered in one area.

“Nurse Zamha.”

Zamha turned to find himself facing Lt. Taylor with another minor emergency.

"Of course, sir," Zamha said cheerfully.  "You know, this is about the fourth time so far I've wished I had my tricorder with me.  Let's get that looked at.  Have you eaten any of the local foods yet?" As they walked towards the medical tent, Zamha started through the standard questionnaire for allergic reactions in alien environments.

== Mo, Ask for GM input when moving locations here - access to the Grand Palace itself may or may not have been possible at this time, doors may have been locked or guards might have prevented anyone entering before the ceremony. For info, dining doesn’t happen in the Blue Hall as that’s the venue for the wedding ceremony. Several dining rooms are located elsewhere for the banquet after the ceremony. I’ll work with this anyway…==

== In response ==

The Lycians and Athenians looked almost identical in appearance, with perhaps the Athenians on average a little shorter, but it would be very hard to discern the origin of any individual from physical characteristics alone. The servants appeared the same as everyone else in this respect.

Everyone Mo spoke to was polite, some were more friendly and talkative than others, the less chatty ones appeared to be busy with duties and keen to get on with work.

Just inside the Grand Palace, one particular staff member, a male with red hair, possibly a footman, wearing a scarlet and blue livery, was very talkative and accompanied Mo through the building asking earnest questions about the Titania and the Captain and he seemed quite interested in the answers.

At one point there was a sound of hushed voices, or you could say forced whispers, from behind a shut door as they passed through one particular state room. It wasn’t possible to make out what the voices were saying. The red-haired footman merely guided Mo on without lingering, enthusiastically explaining the paintings and items of furniture on the way.

On arrival in the green dining room, the red haired footman made his excuses saying he had to be back at work, swiftly disappearing and leaving the Security officer.

A butler came in through a door opposite and seemed slightly surprised to find Mo there sketching. He revealed his name was Yereves. After engaging in polite conversation, the butler looked a little embarrassed before saying ”I do wonder if sir would mind returning to the reception in the grounds? The formal procession to the wedding ceremony will begin there and dinner will not be served for some time. My apologies. If you would walk this way please...” The servant held out his hand in the direction of the exit.

== Outside: for everyone ==

Something of a hush fell on the guests milling around in front of the palace. All eyes were now on the staircase as what must be the royal couples began to descend without any formal fanfare. Unlike all the other guests, they were wearing masks covering their eyes or the top half of their faces, quite reminiscent of Venetian Columbine masks. The musicians continued playing. Servants bowed, and some guest bowed or kissed Queen Ipolita’s hand as the couples passed by.

Queen Ipolita had silver blonde hair and was wearing an off the shoulder cowl neck dress in lapis lazuli. Duke Thesus had long dark brown hair tied back in a pony tail. He wore a peach coloured military uniform jacket which was a more elaborate version of that worn by the Palace Guard but in a different colour. It was decorated with a navy blue sash and silver aiguillettes over the right shoulder. His outfit was completed by a long pleated skirt like a hakama. The more senior royal couple smiled amiably at onlookers and greeted those around them.

The younger betrothed, Lady Herma and Prince Demetrus followed behind. Lady Herma was tall and skinny with highly defined cheek bones and rich chestnut pageboy style hair. She wore an emerald green trouser suit, the jacket seemingly made of soft, puffy feathers. Underneath her open jacket was visible a halter neck top which showed her bare shoulders. A chain belt was slung at a jaunty angle around around her hips, giving her a bohemian air matched by her languid expression. In contrast, the Prince looked a little nervous, dressed in a white leather double-breasted jacket, a shinning golden bird badge on his left shoulder. Demetrus had light brown, short cropped hair. He was slightly red in the cheeks, indicating perhaps some shyness in public.

The royal couples began to mingle with the other guests quite casually and the general chatter around the reception continued as before. The orchestra started to play a more lively tune in 3/4 time.

Zamha optimistically agreed to accompany the Science Officer to the Athenian Medical Tent and along the way, the Nurse said:

"You know, this is about the fourth time so far I've wished I had my tricorder with me.”

…I understand the feeling…

The Selay continued:

“Let's get that looked at. Have you eaten any of the local foods yet?"

“I have, some of the exotic fruit morsels…but the itching began well prior to me eating anything. Undoubtedly a histamine response to at least one of the of the components making up the tattoo.”

And as Taylor and Zamha reached the First Aide tent, Taylor added with a grin:

“My bet is on the adhesive.”

Even in the modern age, the human body could accept a foreign agent one day without incident and the next, an unexpected allergic reaction. It was similar to getting a be sting…an individual gets their very first sting and no issues, and the next time, the body might go into overdrive with a histamine overreaction.

“Hello…” Taylor said to what appeared to be an Athenian (or Lycian) medical professional of some type…

“I’m Lieutenant Taylor, and this is Lieutenant and Nurse Zamha…”

Taylor nodded in the reptilian humanoid’s direction and then the lanky Science Officer lifted his left arm and rotated it to show the inflamed underside wrist tattoo ID site…

“…I would mostly like something to dull the itch…I’m actually looking forward to experience your diagnosis and treatment recommendations.”

Taylor figured that Zamha would be as intrigued as he was, even if the examination and treatment was quick and obvious (like a topical spray, cream or ointment) or possibly something surprising and really unexpected (like a dermal regenerator or some other non-contact device)….

It was about then that Taylor began to notice the festive atmosphere quiet down and he turned his head in an attempt to figure out what was happening…

== GM Input: Taylor has a mild-ish allergic reaction to the tattoo ID. Having a local (Athenian/Lycian) medic take a look and hopefully offer treatment option(s). Have Zamha along to observe the how the Busant system does things like this. ==

==My bad, Captain. I misinterpreted your arrival comment about ‘everyone receiving their table assignments’ and mistook the set banquet tables we passed on the way to the Blue Hall as connected by large open wooden double doors.==

Darwin had fought against the sophistry of natural theory and dogma to suggest species developed and evolved differently when isolated from other members. That the environment could change creatures over time, to meet differing survival opportunities, was hard for many Age of Reflection ‘scientists’ to accept. Deity, man, and beasts were divinely balanced. Yaga wasn’t sure how natural history evolved at all when two planets shared a sun, diurnal rhythm, atmosphere, gravity, climate, and humanoid species so marvelously alike. Appearing far from fraternal, the Lycian and Athenian species were identical twins. It would be more challenging for a philosophy not to pin some divine purpose on such a coincidence.

Astronomer Percival Lowell saw Schiaparelli’s canals on distant Mars as proof of life on that planet. It fired the imagination of Earth and fueled a science fiction. Somewhere in their past, a Busant idealist had put an eye to glass and realized someone occupied their neighboring planet. How long had it taken, from this proverbial Busant Galileo, to clearly visible lights at night, to a radio message, sent and received by technology developed independently and, in cosmological terms, simultaneously? How many years, decades, or centuries had one wondered about the other before they ever knew? Or did one, like Enlightenment explorers, cross the chasm to discover the more primitive other?

Pondering what gods guided the ancient religions of the Busant before science guided them into reaching out to find each other, Yaga followed a conversation at length with the scarlet and blue footman. He was a clever and curious fellow, not unlike many humans and aliens Yaga had encountered. The man could have just as easily been the Duke or the footman or the planet's leading astronomer, save for birth and opportunity.

They discussed the Titania, Yaga's previously meeting the Duke, and Captain Fields' arrival amidst their talk of the passing paintings and furniture. He was engaging, but red hair, much like Inuit logic apparently, was not a royal or god-like gift. They parted ways as mysteriously as they had joined.

Up the ladder of domesticity, the butler subject of Yaga’s sketch seemed surprised, either at being drawn or at just who had wandered into the drawing-room under his charge.

Thanking Yereves at the exit, Yaga could only shake his head in amusement at being escorted out of the Palace for the second time in as many days.

Both times, he had accepted an invitation with a friendly demeanor and left with more questions than when he had entered.

Finding himself in a small crowd on the first tier, at the top of the opposite of the two stairs, they watched the Royal couples make their masked way down from the Palace into the formal Reception area of the Garden. Sketchbook tucked under his arm, Yaga waited until the other Busant around him moved down to follow along with them, and returned to the Garden.

After receiving some refreshments for the third time, with glass in hand, Lois wondered to the front of the Palace. Something of a hush fell on the guests milling around in front of the palace. Lois look around her to see what was going on and notice all eyes were now on the staircase. The royal couple descended the stair case with no fanfare, wearing masks covering their eyes or the top half of their faces. The musicians continued playing. Servants bowed, and some guest bowed or kissed Queen Ipolita’s hand as the couples passed by.

More Disneyland.

Lois had no real knowledge about Disneyland at all. She had only read a paragraph describing the media company and its self-promoting amusement parks and several of its creative ‘movies’, an audio-visual presentation of a book or story. Yet what she had read struck a chord with what she was witness.

Queen Ipolita with her shiny platinum hair and her consort Duke Thesus walked closely by Lois that she could have reached out and touched both easily. In fact Lois moved slightly to take the Queen's hand to kiss it, as Lt Mo had reminded her, before he dumped her for an artistic pursuit, but Queen Ipolita was looking the other way at the time and the moment was lost. Lois only smiled a cheesy grin as they completed their pass and said nothing.

What a horrid loud color for a uniform! Peach with navy blue? You have to be mad or color blind? Our stiff collared dress whites aren’t too bad compared to that! Thank you Star Fleet for being sensible.

Lois then turned her attention to the second couple, Lady Herma and Prince Demetrus. A chain belt was slung at a jaunty angle around her hips, giving her a bohemian air matched by her languid expression.

Now that outfit would look good in black. I’d drop the feathery thing though.

Lois looked at her face and was surprised at how uninterested and unwell she appeared, gaunt, pale, languid, and weak, as if she had delivered a child, or was extremely unwell. That's if Lois’s medical mind was reading the sign correctly.

Something is not right with this young lady.

Looking at the Prince…

If his nose was red as his cheeks, I’d say he has been on the boos! This doesn’t look like a Disney royal couple that lives happily ever after.

The royal couples began to mingle with the other guests quite casually and the general chatter around the reception continued as before. The orchestra started to play a livelier tune in 3/4 time.

Lois with her compassion for those who are unwell took ‘the bit between her teeth’ so to speak, and slowly maneuvered to enable her to introduce herself to Lady Herma, and when her opportunity came, she struck.

“Hello, Lady Herma, I am the Chief Medical Officer of the Federation vessel USS Titania, Lieutenant Lois Lim is my rank and name, but please call me Lois.”

==GM Input please. Lois is attempting to have a conversation with the Lady Herma. In fear of hijacking the character of Lady Herma could you supply her side of this conversation or not? ==

Barjax was excited and a bit confused, he beamed down with several other officers, all dressed in their dress uniforms, he hated them, they seemed uncomfortable. He looked around he spotted Kalli. He wasn’t sure if she had heard him. He noticed that she made her way towards Commander Kurasa and a Mirak Onca, who looked fierce.

He only knew of her in the most casual of ways, He knew there was another Mirak, it’s not that he personally disliked the Mirak Onca, they were a lovely people, but they did have a reputation for dealing with the Dark Arts, some were known for being unsavory in business dealings.  The Once Ambassador to his fathers court was a lovely woman, very pretty and her advisors seemed very nice.

"Greetings Ensign Killrama; perhaps you didn't see that Kalil was speaking with two officers both of whom are senior to you. It is considered proper protocol to at least make polite greetings to all present before attempting to end their conversation." Said the Onca Engineer.

Does this Onca, realize who I’m.

Barjax wasn’t one to get caught up in the pettiness of Mirak Nobility, but he really didn’t need a Onca female butting into his business, not right now. He wanted to talk to Kalli, he knew she was hurting, and he wanted to make sure she was alright.

“Oh, pardon me Lt. Al-Mazi. I meant no disrespect towards you or Commander Kurasa, but I need to speak with Ensign Thorn, it’s urgent.” Said Barjax, as he bowed his head, his tone low and respectful

Kalli was focused on the conversation developing with the wonderful ladies and didn't see that Barjax had indeed noticed her after all and was approaching. Instead, she was imagining the events being described to her. With a bashful grin, Kalli commented, "On Betazed! Is it true that at a Betazoid wedding, everyone is naked, including the guests?" She gave a bit of a blush and then was shifting to the topic of relationships in Star Fleet, "I guess the saying about rank having its privileges is true then. The lesson there being that one should perhaps wait until later in their careers to have such..."

Barjax startled her a little when he spoke. Kalli didn't jump, as she was notorious for doing at such time, but her face did register surprise at hearing the deep voice of the other Mirak. The exchange that followed had Kalli blushing again, but this time more for Barjax than herself. Being very socially awkwark, she instantly recognized him making his own social mistake. Fortunately, both seemed to handle it relatively well.

With a pained expression, Kalli tried to defuse the moment, "Forgive me ladies. I think I might own a small amount of the responsibility for his sense of urgency." She glanced at Barjax and as she summoned more of her resolve, she looked back to the ladies and gave a nod, "He's right though, I'm afraid we do need to speak a moment. Please excuse us. Perhaps I'll catch up to you in a moment."

For once, Kalli was trying very hard to find the right words in a social situation. Although she could have done better, she didn't do a bad job of it. As she turned around to face Barjax, he has stepped a little closer than she had anticipated and she held out a hand to keep from bumping into him. Her hand barely touched his chest and she pulled it a couple of inches away and closed her hand quickly, as if he were hot to the touch. Taking a second to steady herself and focus her thoughts, she braced herself and then reached over and grabbed his paw, leading him a few steps to the side.

Once they were as alone as they were likely to get, Kalli took a deep breath and began trying to say the words she had been going over and over in her own head for the past few days now. She tried looking him in the eyes, but that made her heart begin to flutter and she couldn't focus when she was under his spell like that, so she started speaking to his chest, "Listen, I'm sorry about the other night. I over reacted and behaved badly." She gave a small and embarrassed chuckle, "Come to think of it, most of my behavior that night was new territory for me and...well...I hope you can understand that sometimes humans can be unpredictable in...um...these things."

She realized that her semi-prepared speech was falling apart and she was rambling a bit. Running a hand through her hair as she tried to think on her feet, she gave a sigh and then took another stab at it, "The thing is...after...well...the moment in Sickbay...something clicked for me. I can't explain it, but I suddenly felt something quite unexpected for you. I suppose there could be some fancy explanation for it, but in short, my limbic system went crazy that night and has been ever since. It's embarrassing and I hope you won't be too upset with me about it. I actually had a small chat with Cindy as well and apologized to her as well."

Feeling things were finally going the right direction now, she had some momentum and continued, "I know this is an awkward thing. We both have jobs to do and the ship isn't that big of a place. We're going to bump into each other now and then. I promise to do my best to not make it uncomfortable or anything. Just...um...know that...well, it might take me a little while to not think of you...like that...you know...so..."

Kalli had run out of steam. She shrugged and gave a silly grin as she added, "Sorry, but this is my first time running into this sort of...thing..."

She briefly thought of trying to explain about her world ending when she was only barely 15 years old, but then pushed it aside. There was far too much baggage to drag out with that. She had felt something for the one young man when she was 13 and had kissed him, but that had gone terribly and she had decided to give herself more time before braving those waters again. Then everything ended. Life had been pretty insane until her current life on the ship. She still had not even thought about such things until she had shared that moment in Sickbay with Barjax. He had seemed so vulnerable and in that moment, he wasn't a Mirak and she wasn't a human, they were the same. Just people who were stronger together and were connected on some foundational level that she had never been aware of before. That connection was rare, compelling and precious. It had touched her at the very center of her being and triggered some kind of cascade effect.

Without realizing she was even saying anything anymore, her thoughts had gone to that moment. Kalli had looked up and into his eyes again, losing herself in their depth as she confessed in barely more than a whisper, "It's going to take a little while for me to stop being in love with you."

Having lived in the spotlight of celebrity at one time, Yaga understood it was something of both a magnetic draw and repulsion. From the broadcast coverage the Titania has monitored, he expected more of that behavior. However, here in the Athenian Garden, these Busant seemed charmingly devoid of the ego-stroking paparazzi and who’s-who glad-handing. There seemed to be no amoebic pressing crowd. If you set two-faced metaphor masks aside, everyone seemed entirely familial. The Couples (happy or not seemed debatable) had more air of heads of the household than heads of state. For all the power and security apparatus fused into this political moment, could the Titania be simply crashing a family wedding?

Doctor Lim’s composure as the Royals passed was top-notch officer-standard. Yaga admired the courage, and the moody, beautiful imagery that juxtaposed the down-to-earth Lois with sylph-like Lady Herma was too much to pass up.

Taking up his sketchbook, Yaga began drawing the two talking. The fluid emotions of the two at that moment would be daunting to try to capture.

Shione laughed merrily at Kalil's question; "Actually yes we did do that, which didn't really bother Jelaya as much as I feared it might it might but the number of people present made it less of a concern,"

She shrugged, but disagreed with Kalil's assertion about rank. "Not in our case Kalil, I was a Lieutenant and Jelaya a JG so we simply waited until we had leave coming,"

She watched as Jelaya intercepted the apparently socially uninformed Leo. She wasn't all that knowledgeable in the area of Mirak body language but she had been married to one for years and to her eye he seemed to hold back his original reaction and wisely choose to be respectful.

When he approached Kalil after speaking with both Jelaya and the Engineer she watched as they were about to proceed to a distance to remain private but before they did, she spoke up for the benefit of them both.

"Ensigns;  I have no issues with you both catching up on some urgent private business but please  remember that job number one is representing the Star Fleet and the Federation so please keep your conversation private and then return to mingling with the locals; is that clear; Ensigns?"

After they walked off, she gathered Jelaya's arm in hers and began mingling greeting the wedding guests and making small talk.

As she walked, she noted that Alex was staying with the Captain which eased her concerns for Field's safety; but she did make a point of always keeping the Captain in her field of vision.

Jelaya had gotten them some sort of fruity drink which didn't suit her palate and she noted that she must have 'made a face' when she tried it as one of the Athenians chuckled and added a comment. "It is an acquired taste Commander, one that my husband hopes that I will one day achieve; here try this one,"

"Thank you, yes this is lovely."  She paused and then chose to ask a question that had been on her mind since arriving. "Forgive me if this is a culturally awkward question but I have taken note that many of the place and proper names bear a similarity with an ancient Earth culture and I was wondering if your people might have some connection to Earth in your history?"

Her track record so far hadn't been rosy but she hoped that the question was vague enough to not ruffle any cultural feathers; so, to speak.

== Taylor, first aid tent ==

The appearance of the two Star Fleeters caused heads to turn in the first aid tent. Zamha in particular seemed to be the subject of curious glances.

A first aider in a blue uniform greeted Taylor and examined his wrist visually.

“Looks like some slight irritation. Did you scratch it? Yes... well, just one moment.”

The first aider produced a scan device and waved it over the wrist.

“Taylor, Heston Charles. USS Titania, Science Department, correct?”

He went to a haptic interface and tapped at it for a short while. The information on the screen was in Athenian language.

“Have you suffered from any previous allergies or infections?” He asked looking at the screen. “Aha.... hmm... Well, I don’t see any reason for serious concern. It appears to be a mild localised allergic response... exacerbated by scratching.” That latter sounded a little like scolding.

The first aider then fetched a thin, pen-like tool. “This won’t hurt a bit.”

He pointed the tool at the area of the tattoo and a purple beam appeared which he focused on the irritation. After about 5 seconds it was done.

“That should reduce the inflammation but if this gets any worse you should return just to be safe.”

He put away the pen-like tool into his pocket.

“Is there anything else I can help with?”

== Lim ==

Lady Herma stopped and regarded who had addressed her. “Oh hello. Titania crew... yes. Exquisite of you to attend this jolly occasion.” It was not possible to tell if her tone was serious or mocking, she had that kind of voice. The Athenian offered her hand. “Chief Medical Officer, that sounds fascinating. You must have a lot of work to do with such a large crew or are they all in rude health? Please do walk with me.” She led Lim away from where guests were gathered most densely to a quieter area. “Tell me honestly, are you enjoying the day so far? Do you even celebrate marriages like this in your culture?”

== Kurasa ==

The question was met with puzzlement, “Perhaps it’s a coincidence... or it may be how the translator has translated our language into yours as something familiar?”

Whoever was asked the question seemed equally baffled why it might be so.

One older looking man wearing a long brown robe offered an opinion though: “The Drevardians of the Greve mountains believe that life on both Lycia and Athenia was created by visiting aliens 5000 revolutions ago and that one day they will return to lead us. Their temple is shaped like an enormous landing pad - at least that's the most polite interpretation. Of course, scientists point out that life on the planets is 4 billion revolutions old, but that doesn’t stop belief. You know, there’s a tribe living on an island in the Aiglios sea on Lycia that believe Athenia is made entirely of cake. I suppose they expect all Athenians to be pastry cooks.”

Barjax was excited, he had expected Kalli to scream at him and he was relieved when she bulled him aside, He knew that Cindy was the exact opposite of Kalli. Cindy was bubbly and full of life, but then again Cindy was a Hologram, so she was programmed that way.

Barjax found it unsettling when she began speaking to his chest. "Listen, I'm sorry about the other night. I overreacted and behaved badly." She gave a small and embarrassed chuckle, "Come to think of it, most of my behavior that night was new territory for me and... well...I hope you can understand that sometimes humans can be unpredictable in...um...these things."

Her words made him smile, “Whoa, wait a second. Kalli it was my fault. I should have been aware that Cindy was there, she can be very unpredictable, but…...but now hear me out. Cindy and I have been working on a fully interactive Holographic Data Base about the Mirak culture and civilization. I’m sure she just popped in to ask a question or share a new insight that she discovered. “Said Barjax, his voice low and remorseful.

Barjax looked down at Kalli, he felt a wave of energy wash over him. Kalli was beautiful and Barjax was confused, how can he be attracted to both Cindy and Kalli. Barjax knew that Cindy was a Hologram, but Kalli was a living breathing person and the Captain had a thing about Holograms. Kalli unlike Cindy could be there when he needed a shoulder to cry on, a sympathetic ear.

Kalli then said, "The thing is...after...well...the moment in Sickbay...something clicked for me. I can't explain it, but I suddenly felt something quite unexpected for you. I suppose there could be some fancy explanation for it, but in short, my limbic system went crazy that night and has been ever since. It's embarrassing and I hope you won't be to upset with me about it. I actually had a small chat with Cindy as well and apologized to her as well."

Barjax was surprised by what Kalli said next, "I know this is an awkward thing. We both have jobs to do, and the ship isn't that big of a place. We're going to bump into each other now and then. I promise to do my best to not make it uncomfortable or anything. Just...um...know that...well, it might take me a little while to not think of you...like that...you know...so..."

He smiled and looked down at Kalli, he placed his finger under her chin, tilting her head up, he smiled and said, “You could never upset me, it was as much my fault as anyone’s I should have mentioned Cindy to you, friends shouldn’t have secrets.” He said as he kissed her on the forehead.

When he kissed Kalli he felt a spark run up and down his spine. “Maybe you can help us with the Cultural Data Base.” Suggest Barjax.

Kalli was full of surprises, but her final statement hit him like a phaser on stun, he wasn’t expecting them in the least. "It's going to take a little while for me to stop being in love with you." Said Kalli.

“Well… I…. I…. am…well it’s just that…Why do you have to stop being in love with me? We made a few mistakes; we can start over and try again. “Said Barjax, his voice sounded disappointed and even hurt.

Flying solo (figuratively speaking), Taylor was off with Zamha to get a treatment for his tattoo ID irritation; so, the Star Fleet Engineer thanked the serving staff for the refreshments…

…in her KDF days, serving staff were ignored save to berate an individual for any minor infraction. Kotho much preferred the Federation way and her prior life’s thought and actions in that regard repelled her.

And then, she leisurely pursued a path down the center of the festive adorned avenue towards the Athenian palace. It soon became obvious that something of note was occurring at the front of the palace as the people movement and sounds seemed to evaporate.

Tamara focused her eyes forward and slowed her pace and then stopped…she was able to make out the ornately dressed betroths’ entrance to the pre-celebratory function. The yellow-silver haired woman in the deep, blue dress was…

…Queen Ipolita…

Kotho had memorized the holo-pics of those to be married…

…Duke Thesus…

The dark-brown haired man was mostly visible from the bright salmon colored military jacket. Flashes of the Busant System’s primary light, streaked off of the uniform’s aiguillettes as he moved. Behind the Queen and Duke, were the younger couple…

…Prince Demetrus and Lady Herma…

Even from this distance, Kotho could see that Lady Herma was tall and thin, decked out in a rich green pantsuit. The Prince was dressed in sharp white and had a splash of gold, from a badge design that seemed bird-like.

Almost unconsciously, Lieutenant Junior Grade Kotho had begun to move again, taking a very easy stride. Her ears just made out the chamber ensemble’s new, upbeat tempo in three-four; and with that, Tamara’s pace sped quickly up to match the lively waltz tempo…

== Before their private conversation started... ==

Kalli had been given a mild sort of warning from Kurasa. It dampened the friendly atmosphere they had enjoyed together, but Kalli did understand the meaning behind it as the word Ensigns was emphasized. Feeling a hint of scolding, Kalli simply replied, "Of course, Commander."

== Back to the two Ensigns... ==

Now, with her secret revealed, Kalli felt as if a huge burden had nee lifted from her. Barjax was now struggling for words and his difficulty made her feel less alone in her awkwardness of the moment. She was again reminded of their shared moment of support in the Sickbay. They were so very different, yet in other ways they were also a little alike.

Kalli continued to look him in the eyes and while still blushing a bit, her genuine smile began to come through, "Barjax...you were pretty clear about your family. I can't imagine you bringing me home to meet your parents. Family is extremely important to you and your clan. Even if everything went perfectly and the stars aligned for us, what about children?" She looked at him with a more serious expression and although she didn't name who the quote cam from, she added, "A bird and a fish might fall in love, but where would they make a nest?"

Her look began to turn a little more sad as she hesitantly raised a hand up to his chest. As she slowly placed it against him, the wave of emotion washed over her. The feel of his huge heart pounding could be felt through her entire hand. His pulse was a little faster than she had expected. Her hand moved with his breathing and she simply stood there for a moment, catching her breath as she let the feeling engulf her. She anticipated that this might well ever be the very last time that she allowed herself to enjoy this feeling ever again. Part of her didn't want to walk away from this, but she honestly didn't see that such low ranking people on a ship that were so different could possibly defeat such odds. She also suspected that deep in his heart, he would see her point about family and would choose to let her go. The idea that he might choose her over his entire family and culture were unrealistic.

A tear escaped her and traced a tiny path down her cheek as she offered up, "I don't think that your family would object too much if we were still friends though. I can't promise that I won't still have feelings for you, but I can try to do my best with it."

==Palace Garden Reception, away from densely gathered guests to a quieter area==

Knowing full well some form of Security would be shadowing Lady Herma, Yaga followed along as well, thinking the Doctor deserved as prudent an escort as First Minister Egan’s daughter. She was equally important, at least to the Titanians.

Finding privacy in this tattooed event was a fool’s errand unless you wanted to take a long walk further out into the gardens. Still, Herma displayed some familiarity of the Palace grounds by finding a less crowded area out of the public spotlight. There were perhaps a dozen people scattered around them.

Wandering discreetly along, filling in the bride’s feathered coat in his sketch as he followed, a nook of shade under a blooming bush seemed an excellent spot to continue his drawing of the two women. Half-sitting on the side of the bush’s planter, a sweet aroma wrapped around him before he realized how close he was to the trumpet-shaped blooms.

Using his security training, he was close enough to hear them if they raised their voices but respectfully not close enough to eavesdrop fully. Yaga turned his attention from Herma to Lim. Her spots and hair were easy to charcoal, but the deep look in her eyes left him hesitant. The blank eyes on her face on his sketchpad looked like white sunglasses.

The aroma of the trumpet flowers surrounding him was so rich.

“What are you doing?”

The woman’s voice drew him out of his thoughts like a sunbeam breaking out after a passing cloud.

It was one of the Busant wedding guests, older than him, but not by much. She stood a half-meter away with a rounded crystal glass that contained more fruit than liquid.

“Excuse me?” Yaga asked her. It was actually two women; as a companion, the second guest hung back a meter further to provide her moral support or for fear of Titanians.

The woman’s eyes dropped to his sketchpad, and she took a step up beside him.

Why are you drawing?” she asked with a waft of her snifter at his sketchpad. It was a display of what was becoming the apparent Athenian trait of curiosity.

Turning the sketchpad and holding it higher so she could view it, Yaga’s silent expression freely offered her the option to critique.

Turning her head slightly, with a study of both the drawn and the living Trill, she began to nod.

“It’s her eyebrows throwing you. They are everything to the mood in her eyes.”

With a friendly frown of realization she was correct and appreciation, Yaga resumed his sketching, starting with her eyebrows.

“You must be an artist,” he offered, following her advice.

“In some ways. I’m a reporter for a children’s broadcast. Kythira,” she offered a hand up with palm out in the more traditional Busant greeting.

Yaga paused his sketching and responded in kind. “Kaguyagat Mo.” He leaned out slightly to include her companion, who blushed and took a tentative step closer to them. “Children’s programming? That explains your interest in my drawings.”

“You’re not that rough.” Kythira watched him work on Lois’ eyes. “Wider. Think of them as puppets under those eyebrows.”

“Your Lady Herma is easier.”

“There are about five fashion houses that would vehemently disagree with you,” Kythira suggested with a chortle.

“She looks like her father.”

“You met our First Minister?”

“Fullscreen, and Lady Phila, but only by hails to our Captain. I was introduced to the Duke, though, surprisingly.”

“Lighter on the shading. You’re giving her crow’s-feet she doesn’t have yet.”

Frustrated slightly at not doing Doctor Lim justice, Yaga let out a breath and flipped over a new page in the sketchpad. He offered it to Kythira, who promptly handed him her snifter in exchange and took up the challenge.

“You are Athenian?” Yaga asked, sniffing the drink and still being overwhelmed by the aroma of the shrub flowers instead.

“Lycian,” Kythira explained despite her concentration on her sketching.

With a final inviting glance back to her timid friend, Yaga shrugged and turned his attention to the subjects again and watched the Lycian children’s reporter draw Lois.

Talion continued to observe the event and test a few snacks here and there. The fruits fascinated him, ever the curious scientist. The behavior of the people seemed much the same as the dozens of other cultures he had managed to have at least minor contact with in his past.

At long last, the celebrated couples arrived. Part of him wanted to be almost anywhere else, but most of his brain recognized that it was the crew of his ship that was more on display than the couples. He did his best to smile and look like he was enjoying himself.

Secretly , Alex wondered how much either couple wanted to be married to their betrothed partner. He supposed that it really didn’t matter much. Histories of countless worlds were full of arranged marriages of necessity and not love. He was glad that he had at least briefly found love in life. It had never brought forth any fruit, but perhaps they were doomed from the start. None of it mattered though, it was all in the past. He wondered what the future held for these couples.

At the First Aid tent, Taylor couldn’t help but smile at the attention that his medical colleague was receiving. The emerald shaded, cobra-like features of Nurse Zamha would naturally garner attention from a population that looked much like the high-elves of Earth’s fantasy literature circa the 20th Century.

Taylor’s attention was divided between those observing the Selay (and to a far lesser degree, himself) and the ministrations from the local medic, in blue uniform, who said:

“Looks like some slight irritation. Did you scratch it? Yes... well, just one moment.”

The Titania Science Officer nodded superfluously in the affirmative as the medic had already made their diagnosis. The medic (Athenian? Lycian?) used a scanning device to read the source of his skin irritation and the medic stated:

“Taylor, Heston Charles. USS Titania, Science Department, correct?”

…Charles…? I wish…

“There is an error…” the lanky human said and quicklu added:

“…it should be…Taylor, Heston Cornelius.”

The Science Officer had near instantly decided to be truthful and not let the error (or possible test?) slide. He wasn’t sure if the naming error would be a serious issue or just a minor input error, correct it and move on.

It seemed like not an issue as the medic made various inputs into the device, and Taylor noted the script as Athenian, but understood none of it. The first aider then queried:

“Have you suffered from any previous allergies or infections?”

“None.” The human said.

He had lived a charmed life in that regard, not so much as a bad response from a bee or wasp sting, nor skin allergies from numerous sources.

“Aha.... hmm... Well, I don’t see any reason for serious concern.” The (Athenian?) medic continued:

“It appears to be a mild localised allergic response... exacerbated by scratching.”

Taylor merely nodded with a thin smile. He had figured this out shortly after receiving the tattoo ID and his initial attempts at light and hard rubs, but only nominal relief when he used the edges of his clean and filed smooth, short-trimmed fingernails.

The admonishment seemed to be a play from CMO’s Lim’s ‘bedside manner’ playbook. Taylor’s face formed a grimace when he tried for a forced smile at the medic…

…you’d like Lim…

“This won’t hurt a bit.” The medtech said having fetched a cylindrical, pen-shaped tool.

The device produced a quite visible, lavender light…

woh…!

Taylor’s eyes bulged at the sudden, INTENSE sensation that made the initial itch feel like a light tickle by comparison! The Titania Science Officer called upon internal fortitude to not shout out a number of choice expletives (t would be unseemly, and not very diplomatic) and he kept his arm steady at the high-tech (worthy of Terran Medieval) torture…

What seemed like excruciating minutes, the treatment was over. With a look at his wrist, no, there wasn’t a visual charred mess of his burnt flesh, nor the associated smell of same. There seemed to be a new moment of silence…

…and then the muted perception of reality was broken by the Athenian medic…

“That should reduce the inflammation but if this gets any worse you should return just to be safe.”

Taylor’s eyes re-focused on the tattoo ID and it was plain to see that the redness and localized swelling had been substantially reduced. There was a light tingle and Taylor was more than satisfied with that.

“Is there anything else I can help with?” The first aider asked.

No…” Taylor, Heston Cornelius uttered with an emphasis that he had not intended…

“…this feels much better, thank you. Excellent. I’ll refrain from scratching. Thank you.”

And then Taylor turned around and took a few steps away from the tent and stopped. He would give Nurse Zamha the opportunity to query the medic on the no-physical contact treatment that had just occurred.

It was about then that Taylor kind of noticed some sort of activity at the main staircase of the palace…

== If Zamha approaches Taylor after the treatment, Taylor would ask:

“How long was that beam on? Felt like forever.”

Lady Herma stopped and regarded who had addressed her. “Oh hello. Titania crew... yes. Exquisite of you to attend this jolly occasion.” It was not possible to tell if her tone was serious or mocking, she had that kind of voice.

Lt Lois Lim gave a quizzical expression, she wasn’t sure how to take what Lady Herma meant by her statement ‘attending this jolly occasion.’

An odd way of referring to your own wedding?

The Athenian offered her hand. Lois took the hand of the Lady Herma and shook it politely in the usual Federation manner.

“Chief Medical Officer, that sounds fascinating. You must have a lot of work to do with such a large crew or are they all in rude health? Please do walk with me.”

As they walked, Lois explained briefly that she was the head of a team of officers who catered for the health and wellbeing of the crew.

Lady Herma led Lim away from where guests were gathered most densely to a quieter area. “Tell me honestly, are you enjoying the day so far?

“Yes, very much, it reminds me of some of the fairy tales of the Terran (Earth) culture.” Lim tried not to waffle on and kept her answer short. "But .. er ..uh.. Lady Herma I am aware that this is no fairytale but a day of great significance for yourself and Prince Demetrus as well as for the Lycians and Athenians.

“Do you even celebrate marriages like this in your culture? Asked Lady Herma”

“Yes, most if not all the cultures of the Federation have different ceremonies joining a couple in marriage. Sometimes these marriages are between ruling families and have a political purpose as well as a desire for the couple to live lovingly together, but not all these cultures have life long partnership and others have serval partners at the same time.”

Lois looks puzzled as though she was not sure how far to go with this conversation.

‘Forgive me if I presume to much Lady Herma. A Starfleet an officer would always seek permission to say something of a difficult or delicate nature to a superior officer. Lady Herma, may I speak freely with you... for a moment?”

==GM input please, is Lois given permission to speak freely and state her concern for the welfare and health of Lady Herma?==

Kalli placed her hand to his chest, he felt electricity run up and down his spine. Kalli made him feel real. Cindy was a hologram; she was a collection of force fields and magnetic containment fields, but Kalli was a flesh and blood creature.

"Barjax...you were pretty clear about your family. I can't imagine you bringing me home to meet your parents. Family is extremely important to you and your clan. Even if everything went perfectly and the stars aligned for us, what about children?" She looked at him with a more serious expression and although she didn't name who the quote came from, she added, "A bird and a fish might fall in love, but where would they make a nest?" Said Kalli.

What Kalli said was true, to a point, but she didn’t understand. Family was important to him, yes from the standpoint that when things are hard and life is beating you down, it’s nice to have your family there to support you. His clan was different, while some clans allowed their members to marry the other Mirak species, but that was his clan, not him.

“Kalli, you don’t understand. Yes, my mother and Father are the village High Priest and Priestess and wouldn’t be thrilled with our relationship if we were back on my world, but that’s one of the reason’s I left. I didn’t want to take my father’s place as High Priest someday. I want to be free to marry and be involved with who I want to, not my father or my clan. As far as cubs, I don’t know. It might be possible, it might not who knows, but you are jumping the gun. We don’t know if we are compatible because we haven’t spent any quality time together, we should go on a few dates, take some shore leave together to see if we even fit.” Said Barjax. “But if you feel strongly about us not being together, I’ll understand, but can’t we at least be friends and see where it goes?” Added Barjax, as a small tear rolled down his face.

The words of the large Mirak surprised Kalli a bit. His equally emotional appeal to her plucked at her heart strings and she smiled up at him as she replied, "Really? I thought that it would be unthinkable for you to break with your cultural traditions and obligations like that. I...I..."

For a moment, she was a little stunned. She had been convinced that her feelings for him would only be a burden and she only had the pain to look forward of denying those emotions. Now, quite suddenly, her mind was trying to adjust to the idea that maybe such things were within her grasp after all. Was it possible? Her eyes were drawn back to the tear she had spotted on his own face. They both shared even that right now. Maybe...just maybe...

"...I...would like to try that."  She briefly blushed even brighter than before, but her smile was so wide that she could barely contain it and gave a small laugh at herself and the emotional turn of events.

No longer feeling as shy and awkward, the tension having been dispelled, she tilted her head at him and her smile turned much more playful as she said to him, "Come down here, you big furball."

== Presuming that he bends down or squats down to her level... ==

She then rubbed her face along his muzzle and gave him an affectionate nuzzle, like she had a few nights back. She knew how it had elicited a growling sort of purring response from him then and knew that he had liked it a great deal. It was her first introduction to showing his kind of affection and she rather liked the feel of it as well. She wiped away her own tear and then delicately wiped away his as well. She then wrinkled her nose at him and teased, "My luck, you probably snore." She gave a small giggle and then added, "Come on, we need to try and mingle, like Shione...I mean Commander Kurasa said..." She looked him over and glanced around, "Something tells me that you may be a main attraction around here, but don't worry, I won't make you face the crowds alone."

She spotted the food and drinks and speculated, "We should get you a drink and then see how your skills are at small talk with strangers." She shook her head slowly, "Wow, who would have ever thought I would be deliberately trying to make small talk with strangers."

Kalli had been dreading the entire adventure of coming to the surface, but now she was excited. It was odd enough feeling the gravity of a planet under her feet, but the turn of events that opened up unforeseen possibilities really opened up her eyes and heart now. The universe was once again full of options. She had no idea what might transpire between her and Barjax now...had he said cubs?...she pushed away the thought. She was NOT going to ponder the strange possibility of her giving birth to lion cubs right now. That would all wait until some other day. Right now she had a mission...and a big furry boyfriend to help get through an alien wedding...good heavens...what the heck was the universe going to throw at her next...

== Tag Barjax and all...maybe even find someone to strike up small talk with... ==

Talion was glad to see that more and more of his crew had managed to arrive in one piece and were starting to enjoy themselves. While a few were standing around like a bunch of cadets, others were actively engaging and interacting with the locals. It felt good to see the crew enjoying themselves.

With the celebrated couples now in attendance, Alex dared to step a little closer, prepared to engage, should they approach the Captain or others of the crew. He was feeling a bit protective and perhaps a bit like a parent as he watched over his people.

Off to one side, his eye caught the sight of Barjax speaking with a short crew member. They appeared to be good friends and it made him smile to see that Barjax was making more friends within the crew. The large Mirak stood out and was likely to draw attention, but that wouldn't be any surprise. Zamha was also likely to be of interest to their hosts, but the FO had lost sight of him in the crowd.

For the first time, it struck Talion that he had not checked to see if he had a connection to the ship or not. He tactfully glanced at the device on his wrist, pulling just enough of his cuff back to check the signal strength. He simply wanted to be sure that he had communication with the ship. For the first time in a long time, he was not really worried about his connection with Cindy. She would likely not be of much use in this particular mission. His job did require that he maintain contact with the ship though. If the ship needed to speak with them, he would try to deal with most issues to allow the Captain the ability to not be disturbed, if at all possible. He would bring issues to the Captain if it was unavoidable, but it was his job to filter such things and delegate as required. He had learned pretty quick how important his duties could be in handling the great majority of personnel issues. The Captain needed to focus on the bigger decisions, meaning he needed to deal with as much of the day to day logistics to keep her from being bogged down by every minor crisis that might raise its head.

Talion was actually rather proud of how well his people were doing. The CMO was talking with Lady Herma and holding her own quite well. The security was doing a very nice job of remaining low key and although he didn't expect any sort of serious disturbance, he was impressed to see that there had not even been so much as a friendly family fuss over anything, at least as far as he could tell. It would be nice to have a mission not go all to hell for a change. He was no fan of political entanglements, but he had certainly had more than his chare of difficult or even dangerous missions. For just once, not having casualties to report would really be nice. He was almost looking forward to simply sipping his drink and making pointless small talk.

== GM Input: What is the signal strength of his contact with the ship? His Arm PADD would register both normal comm signal strength as well as his private classified frequency. Their security would have noted it on him in their scans, but he should have had permission to have it with him. He is not performing any scans of any kind with it, though it is capable of performing minor scans, including holo-scans. If it is actively connecting to the ship's comm and data network, he will likely use it to check in with my next post. ==

“No…” Taylor, Heston Cornelius uttered with an emphasis that he had not intended…

"Thank you for the opportunity to observe," Zamha said to the medical attendant/doctor.  Given what he'd read in the data the Athenians and Lycians had transmitted, he'd gotten the impression that the planets were a century or more behind the Federation (much like Selay's locally-produced tech), but what he'd just seen seemed closer to being on par. The diagnostic scanner hadn't choked on what should have been an unfamiliar species, and the emitter the attendant had used seemed like a variation of the dermal regenerator, one that could deal with tissue inflammation rather than only damage. "I hope there will be opportunities to discuss your medical procedures after the ceremony. Your technology seems to be similar to our own."

Zamha waited to give the doctor/attendant an opportunity to respond before rejoining Taylor.

== Tag GM for any response from the physician ==

It was about then that Taylor kind of noticed some sort of activity at the main staircase of the palace…

“How long was that beam on? Felt like forever.”

"Just a few seconds. Why?  Did something unusual happen?"

As they exited, Zamha also saw that all eyes were directed towards the stairs, and the parties descending. "Looks like the wedding party has arrived."

“There is an error…it should be…Taylor, Heston Cornelius."

The first aider looked bemused.

“Are you sure?!” He went back to his computer display. “How unusual... I will change it at once.” He tapped away at the haptic interface for while to correct it.

"Thank you for the opportunity to observe," Zamha said to the medical attendant/doctor. "I hope there will be opportunities to discuss your medical procedures after the ceremony. Your technology seems to be similar to our own."

The medic looked pleased.

“Yes, we’ve been aware of some of your Federation technology for a while of course, but I am certain our Medical Institute would be delighted to answer your questions. They have an excellent museum also, with an exceptional collection of surgical, diagnostic and physiological instrumentation spanning centuries.”

The man looked slightly embarrassed for a moment. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, your Star Fleet medics must be highly skilled with an incredible breadth of knowledge to treat so many varied species. How do you train? It must take many years or do you all specialise?”

The elegant Herma listened attentively as Lim explained about marriage in the Federation.

“Absolutely... Lois was it? Please do, I’d like nothing more.”

They continued to walk in a leafy, less crowded part of the garden.

Interesting it would seem that they actually don't know.

The answer was likely the best one she would receive and she thanked the man nodding in agreement to his solution. "Thank you Elder I am sure you are correct."

With Jelaya on her arm the Titania's Security Chief moved through the crowd engaging in polite small talk and answering any questions regarding the Federation that the guests had for them. Now that she did not have an attentive and annoying Captain of security watching her every move she also paid careful attention to the visible and implied security for the event.

She knew their technological capabilities and with that in mind she was looking for weaknesses.

As they walked Jelaya spotted a familiar face and coming up on his blind side Shione spoke once they closed within confidential conversation range.

Speaking  sotto voce: "Greetings Lieutenant Mo anything to report?"

== First Aid Tent (Addendum/Continuation) ==

Taylor looked at the treated wrist tattoo and inwardly admitted that the treatment had indeed worked. The Science Officer anticipated a return of the itch and eventually was pleased with the not unbearable tingle that remained…

…don’t touch…!

There was the expected interchange between Titania and Athenian/Lycian medics. The First Aider offered up the info for a potential visit to their medical museum and then asked a question (aimed at Nurse Zamha) that certainly caught Taylor’s attention:

“…your Star Fleet medics must be highly skilled with an incredible breadth of knowledge to treat so many varied species. How do you train? It must take many years or do you all specialise?”

It was a great question…

…this system being rather isolated, the medical establishment wouldn’t be expected to have institutional training of the varied humanoid species…let alone non-humanoid ones, of the Federation and peripheral species…

Taylor opened his hand at the Titania medic; non-verbally indicting that Zamha was offered the opportunity to answer the local medic. Taylor could answer, but he was more curious on how the Selay might/would respond…

…good to get perspectives from people not of Earth…

== For clarity on his device, when they had first arrived, their security had initially not been comfortable with detecting some sort of scanning capability in Talion's device. He assured them that it was for holographic scanning, but with the press of a small button, a small array the size of a thumb nail detached from the side of it and he handed it to them. The scanning capability no longer functional, they seemed satisfied after scanning him once more to be sure. ==

As he observed the event, Talion pulled back his sleeve just enough to press a couple of buttons on the edge of the screen. It simply sent a predetermined text only message to the Bridge of the ship. It served to test their communications uplink and also satisfied the requirement to check in when the Captain and so much of the senior staff was off ship. Talion preferred this more discreet method of contact for such minor matters. It would seem rude to unnecessarily talk to your comm badge in such a gathering, when a couple of simple buttons could serve the purpose.

==Palace Garden Reception, a quieter area away from densely gathered guests==

The Lycian reporter Kythira sketched with the tiniest of hand movements. It was as if she was performing needle-point instead of rough charcoal.
"I apologize, Kaguyagat. I’m having the same trouble with her expression as well. It looks like worry, but not quite. What would you Terrans call her facial expression?”

“That’s our Ship’s Doctor, and she’s Trill, not Terran,” Yaga answered with a slow swirling of her snifter. “It almost looks like…concern?”

“Concern, yes. That will do,” agreed Kythira, and her fine detail work became far more large scale and exaggerated as she sketched Lois with a renewed determination.
“What is she so concerned about?”

Taking in a deep breath, and almost coughing at the smell of the trumpet blossoms again, Yaga’s eyes left her sketching to look at the Doctor.
“It is hard to say exactly with Doctors. A hang-nail or a small contusion-bruise are trivial until you have one yourself. Doctors like her wade all day through such crew-members self-diagnosing, often self-treating, their trivial banalities, only to suddenly be roused from a meal or slumber to save a crewmon or the ship by identifying some alien microbe or unknown pathogen brought on board by transporter mishap,” Yaga turned to look at Kythira directly. “Or some away mission to a new planet.”

“Has she saved you?” Kythira asked him without looking back.

“Not yet, but the mission is still young.”

“How do you know you can trust her, then?”

Doctor Lim and Lady Herma began to walk on further into the garden. Coming off the planter side he was half-sitting upon, Yaga stood up fully, and his shoulders stretched back, careful not to spill any fruit from her snifter.
“Space doctors run the gamut from brilliant minds to stitch-n-bandage butchers.”

“Which side is she?”

“Most Federation Doctors are in the middle. From what little I’ve seen of her in our Medbay, I’d say she favored the brilliant side.”

“I’d like to meet her, to give her our sketch. When Lady Herma is through speaking with her, of course.”

“I’ll try. Just don’t bring a pet dog along.”

“Dog?” the second woman asked pointedly, backing up a step again.

Tilting his head to see the woman over Kythira’s sketching hands, Yaga studied the second woman. “It’s a long story.” This woman’s eyes reflected the same emotions as Doctor Lim’s. “Concern,” Yaga pointed to the second woman, his head bobbing.

Kythira glanced over at her companion. “Kaguyagat, meet Kyver Ochora of my home province, Cerigo.”

Using the same Athenian-Lycian hand palm up that Kythira had used to greet him, Yaga tried again to engage with the petite woman.

“A pleasure to meet you, Kyver Ochora. I am Ensign Kagayagat Mo of the Titania.”

The woman held her drink in both her hands, but one began rubbing and stroking the other holding her glass. “Please, call me Palle. There are enough titles around here as it is.”

“She’s not certain she can trust you, as you’re standing under a Brugmansia bush.”

Yaga turned to look at the overly fragrant trumpet blossoms. “Is there something about these flowers?” he asked.

“Superstition says it announces you a deceiving sweet-talker,” Kythira explained. Palle nodded in agreement as her hands stopped their glass-stroking.

“Well, pardon me!” Yaga took a step away from the planter, almost laughing at the irony of catnip getting him in trouble only to find trumpet blossom superstitions could cause an equal reaction to an allergy.

“There no scanner to tell me such pragmatic details,” he apologized to Palle.

She beamed back at Mo and Kythira.

“Please,” Yaga motioned towards the receding doctor Lim and Lady Herma. “Our models have chosen to move further on. Let us follow them at a distance.”

A dozen meters behind the talking pair, the three walked along the path.

“So, which of your names is the title, Kyver Ochora?” Yaga asked the second woman as they passed through leafy shade and warm, brilliant sunny spots.

“Kyver. I am the dimarchos of Cerigo.”

With the fruit-filled snifter lowering to his side, Yaga’s cheek leaned over questioningly into Kythira’s personal space as she finished her sketching.

“Administrator. A governor, a mayor,” Kythira explained, at least, as well as the universal translator could handle. She showed the sketchpad to Palle.

“Kythira said Cerigo was her home province. Are you Lycian as well?”

Slowly nodding as she stole a long look at her friend’s sketching, she nodded again. “I am,” she said before taking a long sip of her drink.

First handing the sketchpad to Yaga, Kythira stooped and began to brush the charcoal off her hands on the grass at their feet.

Yaga studied the drawing of Doctor Lim. “You’re certainly talented, Kythira. You’ve managed to capture an uncertain emotion with a skilled eye. What is the name of your children’s reporting broadcast?

“Spyglass - it’s a hidden village of children that sends out scout reporters to bring back tales and trinkets of other places on Lycia. A simple formula, really,” Kythira explained as she stood back up fully.

“Dear, you’re being modest,” Palle defended Kythira to herself and suddenly became very talkative in her praise. “Spyglass has inspired hundreds of thousands of junior reporter scouts over the past few years.”

Kythira’s lips disappeared into each other to form a line as she took back the snifter from Yaga. “You still haven’t answered my original question, Kaguyagat. Why are you drawing things around the Palace? Are you the Titania’s Artist in Residence or something?”

Yaga caught a glimpse of what seemed to be one of the sword-armed Athenian guards following them. “Oh, no. Music is my thing, really, but charcoal and black-and-white sketches were a way to slow down and admire the details of Athenian life. It keeps my mind from obsessing over security details I have no control over whatsoever.”

“Were you chosen to be here from your fearsome crew?” Palle asked, stepping further away again.

“We Titanians don’t bite, Palle. And please call me Yaga.”

“You have snake people and a giant lion-man from your crew here with you,” Palle offered back, seemingly defensive again.

"Greetings, Lieutenant Mo; anything to report?" Commander Shione called out from behind him. The sword-wielding guard turned out to be his own Chief Kurasa, along with Lieutenant Jelaya.

“And jaguar-women,” Yaga added proudly in response to Pella. “Commander Kurasa. Lieutenant Jelaya. Join us, please! Allow me to introduce Kythira of Cerigo, and Kyver Ochora, the dimarchos of Cerigo.”

Doctor Lim and Lady Herma were a dozen meters ahead and now slowly leaving them behind.

The elegant Herma listened attentively as Lim explained about marriage in the Federation.

‘Forgive me if I presume to much Lady Herma. In Starfleet an officer would always seek permission to say something of a difficult or delicate nature to a superior officer. Lady Herma, may I speak freely with you... for a moment?”

“Absolutely... Lois was it? Please do, I’d like nothing more.”

They continued to walk in a leafy, less crowded part of the garden. They walk in silence for the moment that it took to move further away from the guests so they could speak with some sense of privacy, at least that's what Lois assumed the good Lady Herma was doing, the gravity of this situation slowly dawned on Dr. Lim. She took her time to speak and contemplated the consequence of what she was about to say. This may end up in a diplomatic situation where the Titania may be expelled from Busant system if she wasn't careful. That's where her thinking had brought her.

What the heck! Surely some common concern for a fellow sentient being couldn't cause that much trouble? But probably I'll need to put on my best bedside manner. Ahhh! this is going to be good!... Not!

Lois took a slow glance around her surroundings as they stopped in a more distant spot in the garden. She noticed Lt Mo at a distance, conversing with some guests accompanied by Commander Kurasa and her partner,  Lieutenant Jelaya.

At least I've got some backup if this goes 'tits up'. Lois couldn't remember where she had got that expression, except that she had heard it in her academy days from a Terran.

"Lady Herma, I admit that I am an alien physician with no knowledge of Athenian or Lycian physiology. My experience tells me that there usually is some commonality between bi-pedal species such as you and I or  say humans and my species, Trill. It is out of that experience I speak with the utmost respect. When I first saw you on the stair case with you future husband, I was filled with concern for you. That concern has compelled me to seek permission from you to speak frankly with you about my concern which comes with heart felt compassion. I noticed, as you proceeded through the crowd that physically you seemed to me to be pail in color  and gaunt compared to other  Athenians, which would indicate an illness of some kind in my species and  in most species similar to ours. I also took note of your expression and words of greeting, as we first spoke. You said, 'Exquisite of you to attend this jolly occasion.' That is a very unusual way for a bride to describe her own wedding. To me you did not look happy or remotely jolly about this occasion, your wedding day. So I ask these question out of concern and compassion of you, and you alone. I am bound by oath not to reveal your answers to anyone without your permission, unless doing so would bring physical or mental harm to you or others.  Are you unwell Lady Herma? And if so, can I help in any way? Do you want to be here and marry Prince Demetrus? If not is there anyway I can assist you achieve what you want? I am concerned for you Lady Herma, and I only wish to fulfill my vow as a Federation physician, 'to help those in need and to do no harm.'

Lois final took a breath.

What have I done?  Bet that will put the Trillian feline amongst the avian species! She'll call the authorities now and have me arrested!

Lois stood meaningfully resolute in stature, not wanting to give away her self-doubt, as she awaited a reply from the good Lady Herma.

Zamha thought for a moment. "I only have my own experience to go by. I come from a world that has been a member of the Federation for less than a century, and which lies far out towards the edge of Federation territory."

"At Star Fleet Academy, instruction comprises four Earth years of intensive training, with the goal of producing an officer with a solid foundation in their chosen focus, with the expectation that during their career, they will continue their education as well as gain practical experience while performing their duties under the guidance of their superior officers. For many, it's a never-ending process. Even senior officers get additional training from time to time. But because of its mission of exploration, contact, and discovery, Star Fleet emphasizes generalists within its operational divisions, which I suppose you could consider broad 'specializations', with more specific specialists being assigned according to the needs of individual ships and their missions."

"Outside of Star Fleet, the duration and scope of educational practices varies a great deal. The Vulcans, for example, begin intensive education in early childhood, just as soon as a child develops enough to grasp the concepts being taught. But that idea, beginning education during childhood, and continuing for as long as it takes to achieve the level of education desired, is common on many worlds, in or out of the Federation, but its intensity and depth vary a great deal.  The most advanced subjects require the longest, most intensive instruction.  Specialization generally comes as additional years of education on top of foundational training, though there are exceptions."

"Now, taking my homeworld as an example, our native technologies lag about a century behind the Federation average, and while we educate our children from a young age through early adulthood, we encourage professional or trade specializaion in the latter half. Because of that, when I decided a the age of seven that I wanted to join Star Fleet as an adult, I eventually realized I would need a wider range of instruction than our school system normally provided. I needed to take additional classes in general, non-specialist subjects, as well as obtain Federation instructional materials.  My home city is the location of a Federation consulate, and they're able to provide such materials, as well as providing public access to the Federation's library computer system."

"So I suppose the simplest answer is that more advanced instruction is spread through the primary years of schooling, leading to students who are accustomed to more advanced instruction and who are prepared to learn the advanced subjects they will learn in their secondary schooling."

"But as far as the scope of medical knowledge goes, there are some remarkable similarities among species coming from oxygen atmosphere, water bearing planets. So the amount of knowledge required is not nearly as broad as if we were all completely unique."

"Sorry for prattling on," Zamha apologized, "but I'm just...enthusiastic about the opportunities Star Fleet has given me."
