==Coming-aboard subplot for our new arrivals==

==Timeline - 2 weeks following the end of the Philadelphia mission.==

For a ship the size of the USS Jupiter, the guest quarters weren't exactly palatial. With most of the ship's mass devoted to cargo bays, industrial replicators, and other storage systems, the ship was any logistician's dream assignment; a cruise ship or personnel transport, she was not. The replacement crew for the Philadelphia had been assigned quarters aboard for the journey into the Shackleton Expanse, and told to stay there by Captain Khumalo, the ship's gruff and not-likable Captain.

Fortunately the journey itself was only a matter of hours as the Jupiter's Quantum Slipstream Drive allowed it to hurtle effortlessly across the Beta Quadrant in a fraction of the time it would take for a ship to travel at regular Warp speeds. Arriving in the Jateran system alongside the Scott and the Phlox, the Philadelphia appeared as a mere speck against the gargantuan repair ship as the Scott pulled alongside to deliver spare parts to the little survey vessel.

With supplies being rushed to the surface by transporter and runabout, it was going to be a while before the replacement officers were able to disembark...

There had been good news in being assigned to the Philadelphia: instead of two months’ time, the ship that was transporting them now needed to be there ASAP, and so would be using the slip-stream drive. “Here are your quarters,” Captain Khumalo said, “Stay out of the way.” Maggie was pissed until she learned why he was annoyed: it seemed Braggins’ kid had royally effed things up. The Jupiter came up on the Philadelphia and two other ships, there presumably to clean up Jennifer Braggins’ mess.

“Here until they clean the floor…” Maggie mumbled, thinking of this planet as a blown-up kitchen. Indeed, it looked as if a metaphorical gas leak had blown up part of the metaphorical kitchen, and the hospital ship and repair ship were constantly sending shuttles back and forth. She could only imagine that their transporter buffers were working overtime.

There was a whine from the other side of the room, and Mags thought about how she did not envy the logistical nightmare that Khumalo had been “asked” to help with. “Yeah, well,” Maggie said out loud, to the image of the Jupiter’s Captain in her mind, “We need to go for a walk.”

Adorned with a brand-new pink collar and matching leash, Maggie clipped the leash to Piper’s neck, and shrugged. She kind of wanted a look around, anyway.

“Two thousand, seven hundred and ninety... three.” Said Black as she laid back on the cot, in the storage bin she'd been assigned for the trip.

When she'd been given her new orders, she'd just come off of shift aboard the Busan. And then she'd had only four hours to pack before the transfer to the shuttle that was heading back to the nearest starbase. And from that moment till now, she had been hopping on and off of more ships than she had thought possible. She was tired and feeling grouchy. And so she had taken advantage of this latest, and hopefully final leg to try to get some sleep before she arrived at her new posting.

Counting the small holes in the ceiling tile above her head seemed like a good idea. Counting sheep was supposed to make you fall asleep she thought, so counting holes should do the same thing? No.

Was there such a thing as over tired? She wondered to herself in her seemingly solitary confinement.

Three shuttles, one starbase and two starships she'd been on in the last seventy six hours. And the man running this pack pony was the biggest miserable sod she'd met along the way. He was just the kind of officer that if she was under his command, she'd probably have to put in for a transfer anyway just because of the way he'd laid down the law. She'd almost responded, 'Yes Daddy.' in jest when he said they were to remain in their quarters for the trip. But she held her tongue.

There were a lot of people in that final group meeting before they departed, so she never got to really see who was there or if she vaguely recognised anyone in the huddle.

Huffing, she stood up off the cot and stretched before going to the small replicator that could produce nothing bigger that a small coffee and a packet of nuts.

Yey, cuisine. Join starfleet. See the universe.

Her cupboard of a room had no windows. It had probably been built at the cost of refucing cargo space along with several others. And that was probably why Captain Grunpy was not happy shipping people and not cargo.

Ordering the coffee and nuts option for the third time since arriving, Maz pondered her situation again. It's what she did. It's what everyone probably does, she concluded when they're left to their own devices on a long journey. Should she use her given name on this ship or stick with her chosen pseudonym?

Mazikeen was the name her parents had given her. Usually shortened to Maz by herself and her old friends, but after her... Incident. She began using her middle name, Theresa. It was less stand outy. More anonymous than 'Maz the Murderer' which she'd heard while she was awaiting trial. She hadn't liked that one iota, but it had been years now since then. Maybe she could start using her old name again? Or just stick with Theresa. It did work after all.

These were the kind of thoughts that weren't really good she knew. But being alone with you're own mind... She had to get onto another subject.

“Computer. Can you play music?”

[The ships music database has two trillion entries spanning Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Dominion, Typhon Pa...]

“So that's a, Yes. Then?” She said interrupting the possibly ever increasing list.

Briefly, she considered a bit of BreenPop. It was kind of similar to Sinnravian drad just a little less shouty, but what she really wanted to do she thought was maybe have a little dance. Just to get the arms and legs moving after sitting still for so long.

“I fancy something loud. What do you have in the classical section?”

[Please define century for classical music.] Said the Computer.

“I don't know. Twenty First? Random selection?”

There was a bleep and the computer announced. “Random selection. Twenty first century. Now playing: Bentovim, Ayalah. Feelin Good. Please state volume.]

“Loud.”

The sound began to thump from wherever the speakers were. And she didn't care how thin the walls were. Maz was having a dance, and no one could stop her.

To say that the transfer had been rushed would have been an understatement and came with some very strong mixed feelings on Shione's part

Firstly, she would be separated from her wife and daughter, which was going to be hard on all. Aashaa had never been without her two mothers but she was five now and was mature enough to be capable of understanding that there was no option, and that whenever possible they would be together and should the posting at any time prove to be able to accommodate; then they would be reunited.

Secondly Shione was of mixed feelings herself; not having the people she loved with her was going to be tough but it was something that she should have anticipated, but the swiftness of the move was almost breathtaking. The few days they had together flew by and before she knew it, she was on her way to meet the USS Jupiter, but was met by a distant relative with a gift; a cat carrier with S'hiarra's cat George within.

Her sister had spoken to her of the British Shorthaired cat, who had been gifted to her by their Vulcan father, and S'hiarra had discovered that he had some Vulcan traits of his own. She had also had a dog, but there had been an accident and the little Cairn terrier had been killed. The cousin she met told her that George had been off his food ever since and they hoped that a new 'person; might shake him out of the mood he appeared to be in.

Bending down she picked him up and held him face to face, "We're both going to be missing our homes George, but maybe together we'll do alright." After a brief nuzzle, she put him back in the carrier which appeared to have some cat toys, but that would likely be something that Shione could replicate. She thanked her cousin, and shared lunch; catching up on news from Vulcan, before heading for the departure ramp.

Once aboard she went over in her mind the rules that the rather stoic Captain had explained, and resolved that while distractions of socializing might have been appreciated the chance to spend time meditating and getting to know George would likely keep her occupied.

The quarters were adequate, but not sumptuous, but this was a freighter and as such likely as good as could ever be expected. Their first night together Shione allowed George to roam and when she awoke in the morning found him sleeping on her left arm, which as a habit had always been in contact with Jelaya. She was momentarily lost in the emotions of the separation, until the weight of the cat transferred itself up her arm to her shoulder where George then resettled himself. Wiping her face, she leaned in and bussed his forehead before settling back down and sleeping a while longer.

Getting the food ready for them both, using the instructions passed on, and then sharing their first meal filled a short time as did unpacking and getting all of George's belongings spread out got them through to lunch, but before employing the replicator she picked him up, adding as if the cat could understand, "Lets take a look and see if there is a mess hall, shall we?"

Upon opening the door, the cat in her arms she noted movement as a dog led a human woman towards her door apparently out for a walk.

Maggie would see what would look like a Vulcan female cradling a small grey short-haired cat, dressed in casual clothes, but with LCdr pips and a comm badge denoting her status. "Greetings I am Lieutenant Commander Shione Kurasa, and this; ,indicating the cat, "Is George; pleased to meet you."

Emily sat against one of the walls in her "quarters". Quarters probably wasn't the appropriate word for them - broom closet suited it better. She was by no means unused to small spaces or sleeping in one, the Endeavour hadn't exactly been spacious, but this was ridiculous. The Athena's quarters had been a palace compared to this.

She sat down on her bed and laid back onto it slowly. The Forge had been a good ship. Far bigger than the one she was headed to now. Philadelphia may have been newer but a cruiser she was not and Emily didn't know how to feel about the reassignment. She'd just felt like she was getting settled and then was transferred to a new ship with a new crew of people she may or may not get along with and...

Alright, calm down for a second and think.

It would be fine, small ship not many people. Hopefully she could get on with her job without too many interruptions.

Sitting up again, she pulled her jacket off, leaving it on the bed beside her, and looked down at her right arm. The grey steel glinted in the light slightly, her eyes tracing it from her fingers all the way up to just above where her elbow should have been and was now only a joint allowing the arm freedom to move. She flexed the fingers slowly, then, crossing the arm across her chest, flipped open a panel on the side, revealing the inner frame and wiring that kept it going.

Twelve years since I lost this...

She slotted the panel back into place on her arm, deciding to tinker with it later. She laid back down on the bed, staring up at the blank ceiling. After a few minutes, she thought she could hear music through the walls. It was by no means quiet, and after half a minute trying to ignore it, gave up and decided she'd better figure out what it was. She pulled the jacket back on over her shoulders, and walked out of the room. Looking to her right she thought she could make out a woman with a dog down the hallway but the music was coming from the left so that's where she was going. The room two doors along seemed to be the cause of the noise. Best to figure out what it was and hopefully get it to stop.

Raising her left hand, she knocked on the door.

They say that you should dance like no one is watching, and that's exactly what she was doing. Arms raised as she spun and kicked her way around the hutch of a room. The music taking her back to her youth at the music festivals

The tune was a classic that she knew well, but as it reached a pause in the rhythm before the crescendo came, she heard another kind of beat. Not one from the song. More the fast rapping of a hand. Probably attached to someone who was going to tell her to turn it down or off. And that made her stop and sigh.

There's always someone... She thought as she said; “Computer. Mute.”

The sound of silence was more deafening that the ear splitting music had been as she walked over to the door and pressed the stud to open in and receive what she expected to be a dressing down from Captain Grumpy himself knowing her luck.

Instead before her stood a young woman about the same build as she was. Maybe a little heavier set. She had shoulder length golden brown hair, and was probably half of Maz's age.

Probably not a fan of the classics... Probably prefers the modern stuff...

Fixing a smile in an attempt to disarm what she expected to be a complaint, she stood just inside the doorway and said to the girl. “Hi. Can I help you?”

Piper almost dragged her down the hallways; even at seven, she was a strong girl! Mags found herself wondering what had gotten into her dog, only to remember that this was a totally new environment, with new people and new smells to everything, and so of course a herding dog was going to do its best to check out its new surroundings.

“Gee, whiz!” Maggie muttered, still used to holding her tongue due to having a small child, “Could you be any more of a buttface right now?! Oof!” They were now headed down a hallway with music blaring from behind one of the doors, and with no nameplates on the doors, Maggie could only wonder who in the heck could be listening to old Earth music at full blast.

Outside a nearby door to that room was a woman, Vulcan by the look of her ears, holding quite carefully, a grey cat. Maggie wrapped Piper’s leash around her hand once, twice more, shortening the lead of the 40-something-pound dog. The last thing Maggie needed right now was to chase Piper all over the ship, who was in turn, chasing a random person’s free-roaming cat.

“Greetings,” the Vulcan said, “I am Lieutenant Commander Shione Kurasa, and this is George, pleased to meet you.”

Maggie slowed down as they passed the woman, and she couldn’t help giving her the hairy eyeball. Why is she wearing her pips on her civilian clothing? Finding no words, Maggie could only give Kurasa a completely confused expression. I’m just passing you in the hallway, lady. What a f***in’ weirdo.

It was a good thing Vulcans were not directly telepathic.

“Yeah.” Maggie just said in return, continuing to walk her dog. “Hi.” And she kept walking. Now she kept Piper close to her, glad the dog hadn’t reacted to the cat, for safety’s sake. Not that she thought a Vulcan would do anything untoward, but greeting someone by your full rank, showing your rank while in civilian clothing, was definitely ranked on Maggie Weird-Sh!t-O-Meter, even if it was a low score. Wearing a commbadge was one thing, of course, but wearing pips while in civvies? Just weird. Who did that? Lieutenant Command Shione Kurasa, apparently.

Down the hall, she got closer to the music, and a younger woman with dark-amber hair was knocking on what appeared to be the door of the room in question. Loosening the leash slightly as she walked past this woman, Maggie was glad to see a corner coming up, and chose to quicken her step in order to get out of this hallway a little faster.

The music volume increased slightly as the door opened behind her, and the music spilled out into the corridor. Maggie gritted her teeth, wondering now whether Captain Khumalo’s had been for his own good, or her’s. “Hi,” said the woman who was blasting the music. “Can I help you?”

It’s like being back at the Academy, Maggie thought ruefully. Bunch of girls, rooms stuffed together in one section of the ship, one’s being weird, one’s blasting music… I wonder if there’s a Mess Hall on this ship. When do we report for assignment again? There’s gotta be an ETA by now…

== The music was muted... ==

Before the young girl spoke however another person walked in to view. The distraction was enough that it took Maz a couple of seconds to recognise them.

“Hold that thought...” She said holding up a finger before she knelt down on one knee. “Piper! What are you doing here?”

It was about five seconds later that Maz then realized who piper was taking for a walk. Reality sank in a little quicker, and by that time. It was too late.

Maz lifted her gaze up from the black and white mischief maker and up at...

“Commander Murphy.” She paused again as she slowly stood back up straight. “How are you. Ma'am.” She said. Her already slightly squeaky voice considering whether or not to go up another octave.

The woman she spoke to appeared to be put off, and didn't even offer an introduction in return. Shione felt the woman's gaze pan over her and her eyes narrowed.

Hmmn apparently, I don't meet her highness's approval, how unfriendly! But her training allowed her to master her emotions and she refocused on her small gray friend.

George was having issues of his own and was squirming to get distance from the dog. The woman had taken steps to control the dog which Shione appreciated but other than a brief "Hi", that was the extent of her socialization. As she stood there for the moment, she could now hear loud music down the hall and another woman knocking on the door from whence it came.

"Well George I am not going to inflict getting close to that dog on you, so I am sorry, I guess for now you're going to have to stay in the room." Turning around Shione brought her new 'friend' back inside and placed her on the window sill, which was the first place that George had moved to when Shione had let hewer out of the carrier. Placing a couple of the treats that S'hiarra had arranged for; in front off her, and then turned; headed out and down the hall.

As she approached the music was cut off and another woman came to the door , "Hi can I help you?" Well, it seems we have more than adequate gender representation here.

However, when the woman who came out of the room turned to face the one who had passed Shione her face expressed first recognizing the dog?  Piper hmmn, now where have I heard that name?

It wasn't coming to her but she continued further and caught the abrupt change of expression on the fourth woman's face as she not only recognized her but visibly straightened up

“Commander Murphy.” She paused again as she slowly stood back up straight. “How are you. Ma'am.” She said. Her already slightly squeaky voice considering whether or not to go up another octave.

Commander Murphy, and Piper? Without realizing Shione spoke aloud, not at a volume which would carry all that far; but she was surprised enough by the irony of meeting an officer and her dog whom her sister had known, that the reaction to speak was a reflexive one.

"Ah, I have heard of an incredible dog named Piper. My sister spoke of her as the 'fetch' champion from the Sheridan, what a coincidence?"

Shione was pleased to have at least some information to work with, but she was reserved in her demeanor given the first reaction from Murphy.

So, turning to the other two women she introduced herself, "Hi all, I'm Shione Kurasa a transfer from the Titania, pleased to meet you all."

Emily was about to raise her hand again to knock on the door, when the music subsided. She lowered her hand just in time for the doors to hiss open, a woman now standing in the doorway. She looked older than Emily was, with blonde collar length hair. Roughly the same build too, although she looked to be slightly smaller. The woman smiled at her in the sort of smile used to try to put someone at ease - or that she was expecting the complaint and was trying to make it less harsh.

She was about to speak when the woman in front of her seemed startled.

“Hold that thought...” She said holding up a finger before she knelt down on one knee. “Piper! What are you doing here?”

Emily turned to see a dog and a woman walking just ahead of where she was standing. The dog looked like a border collie, but Emily wasn't too sure on that.

Seconds later though the woman, now to her left, stood up again, recognising the woman, calling her Commander Murphy. She wasn't quite sure who Murphy was exactly but got the distinct feeling that the two were acquainted, and likely not in a good way.

"Ah, I have heard of an incredible dog named Piper. My sister spoke of her as the 'fetch' champion from the Sheridan, what a coincidence?" A voice came from behind her.

Emily spun around to see a Vulcan woman, dressed casually apart from a commbadge and the rank pips of a Lieutenant Commander. Rank Pips on civilian uniform? Vulcans...

The woman then turned towards her, "Hi all, I'm Shione Kurasa a transfer from the Titania, pleased to meet you all."

How many people are in these quarters??? I came to ask one person to turn the noise down not to have a chat with half the ship...

Sloane instead decided to stand off to the side, letting one of the others continue, or discontinue, the conversation.

==Whoops! That’ll teach me to post late at night! :P ==

She had almost made it to the corner. The hallway was just starting to round. But, with the music no longer blaring, and the two women’s voices clear as day, it was hard for the Border Collie to miss the call of a dog lover.

“Piper! What are you doing here?” The dog immediately turned around, heading quickly towards Black, pulling the hapless Maggie along behind her. Anything for a bit of attention! By the time they had made it to the woman, Piper in her face, the woman’s expression changed as she clearly recognized who was at the other end of the leash. “Commander Murphy.” The woman spoke, her tone careful. Her entire body language changed, standing up slowly, making sure to stand as straight as she could. “How are you. Ma'am.” Her voice had risen at least an octave and a half from nerves.

Maggie’s eyes narrowed slightly, wondering where in the hell she knew this woman from, and why her presence had such a clear effect on her. She does look familiar… Maggie thought, studying her face. I didn’t have her on Bravo as a greenhorn Middie, did I? Definitely haven’t seen her for a while…

The Vulcan had followed her. Probably lured outside by the previously-intruding music, there now stood four women in the hallway. “Ah, I have heard of an incredible dog named Piper. My sister spoke of her as the 'fetch' champion from the Sheridan, what a coincidence.” Lieutenant Commander Shione Kurasa commented. Piper sure was happy with all the attention she was getting today. “Hi all, I'm Shione Kurasa, a transfer from the Titania. Pleased to meet you all.”

Mags looked around at the other three women, wondering for a shocking second if they were all transferring to the Philadelphia. It seemed the ship was about to get a strong infusion of estrogen.

“Where do I know you from?” Maggie asked Black, speaking carefully. She didn’t want to A, offend the woman, or B, underestimate her. For Black to be acting like she was, Maggie had an idea that their last encounter had not been as friendly as the one they were having now.

Murphy's eyes narrowed as she looked at Maz. The Commander been there almost next to her when she'd pulled the trigger.

Maz could feel herself turning as read as a tactical collar as she flashed on what had happened. Her own personal nightmare that even though she'd had counselling, still haunted her and probably forever would.

At which point, another woman appeared. And she too looked familiar to Maz. She looed from the third woman, back the second, to the first. Down at Piper. Back at Murphy at...

“Ah, I have heard of an incredible dog named Piper.” Said the third woman. “My sister spoke of her as the 'fetch' champion from the Sheridan, what a coincidence. Hi all, I'm Shione Kurasa, a transfer from the Titania. Pleased to meet you all.”

Maz was on the back foot now. Her brain made the connection, S'hiarra? Being a Vulcan security officer she's served with, on the Sheridan. But as she just said her name was Shione Kurasa. A name that meant nothing to her. She was baffled why she'd made that connection.

She said, Sister? Maybe? She looks a lot older if she is. It has been a few years. But we all age. We all... Mature a bit. Possibly.

All that came out of Maz's mouth in response to the statement was. “Er..”

Thankfully. Or rather sounding more measured, Murphy asked; “Where do I know you from?”

Not really a subject Maz would have wanted to bring up surrounded by two seemingly complete strangers.

Theresa Black. Ma'am. We were on the...” she gestured to the dog and at the Kurasa woman because she'd mentioned the ship already. “On the, Sheridan. Briefly. I used to work, security. You probably don't remember me. I was only an ensign back then.”

In her head, she knew that simply the mention of her name and the connection with the Sheridan would be sounding alarm bells to anyone who'd been aboard that day.

Maz allowed her eyes to flick from person to person to hound to person as she waited for Murphy to reply. But at the same time, she noticed that the poor girl who'd originally knocked on the door had backed away form them a little as if she was already sensed the tension and was looking for an exit from this potential dysfunctional group before things happened.

Maz continued to give her small forced smile of I'm being polite.

“Sorry, I missed your name too." She said to the girl. "I thought that Captain Grum... I mean, Captain Khumalo, said we weren't allowed to leave our, quarters?” She quickly added to try to change the subject.

When the officer at the door appeared to be confused by meeting Commander Murphy and recognizing both Piper and the Commander; Shione wondered why but when she made her own connection to the Sheridan, the memory came back.

S'hiarra had spoken fondly of the apprenticeship that a Security Ensign named Maz had provided for her and was always grateful for the lessons the more senior officer had passed on.

However...

The gathering around the dog and the door had refocused the conversation clearly away from the fourth woman and taking care not to get too close to Piper so as not to possibly upset the dog Shone made her way past and with a warm smile; held out her hand to the other as yet unidentified woman.

"Hello, my name is Shione, we haven't had the pleasure. Are you transferring to the Philadelphia as well?"

“Where do I know you from?” Murphy asked, directing the question towards the other Human woman.

They definitely seemed to have met, although Emily couldn't quite figure out whether it was a good or bad relationship.

“Theresa Black. Ma'am. We were on the...” she gestured to the dog and then at the Vulcan woman, Kurasa, who'd mentioned the ship already. “On the, Sheridan. Briefly. I used to work, security. You probably don't remember me. I was only an ensign back then.” She still had the same smile on her face as the one she'd greeted Emily with. Clearly she wasn't too social either.

“Sorry, I missed your name too." Black was looking at her now, "I thought that Captain Grum... I mean, Captain Khumalo, said we weren't allowed to leave our, quarters?”

At that exact same time the Vulcan walked over to her, holding out her hand, "Hello, my name is Shione, we haven't had the pleasure. Are you transferring to the Philadelphia as well?"

Gah! Focus on something else, please.

Emily looked down at the extended hand, not quite sure what to do with it. Made a decision a moment later and shook hands with her, then returned her right arm to her side.
"It's Sloane." She said, looking at Black, "I am transferring to the Philadelphia as well. He did say we shouldn't leave, but who's going to stop us?"

Why didn't I just stay in my quarters...

In response to her question, the woman in front of her, standing in the doorway as casual as could be, now turned bright red. “Theresa Black. Ma’am. We were on the…” The Vulcan was talking too, interjecting, doing what Maggie supposed was the Vulcan version of complimenting Piper, which would have been nice, had Maggie not been in the middle of a conversation. “We were on the Sheridan. Briefly. I used to work security.” Her voice quickened as she continued. “You probably don’t remember me. I was only an ensign back then.”

Oh, the name rang a bell all right. Maggie had had several “interviews” concerning then-Ensign Black’s cold-blooded assassination of an Ambassador they had sworn to protect. In fact, it had been Murphy and Black’s personal duty on the Away Team to protect said Ambassador. When the man had wandered around ten feet away from them, instead of nicely dragging him back like Maggie suggested, Black had shot the man in the head at perfect range. They had been serving under Paul Braggins then, and it satisfied Maggie just a bit to think that Black must have sh@t her pants to see that she was being transferred under (albeit, another) Captain Braggins’ control.

Waiting nervously for Maggie to say something, Black’s eyes passed from person to dog to person, anticipating most likely a reaming out. She had been carted away, of course, never to be seen by that crew again, assumedly, until now. After allowing the moment of shocked silence to pass -what was Maggie to say?- Black turned to address the girl that had knocked on her door. “Sorry, I missed your name too. I thought that Captain Grum… I mean, Captain Khumalo, said we weren't allowed to leave our quarters?”

“Hello, my name is Shione, we haven't had the pleasure. Are you transferring to the Philadelphia as well?” The Vulcan sure wanted to have a conversation with someone, that was for sure.

Now it was Maggie who was taking a step back from everyone. “And we’re all serving on the Philadelphia together…” She stated, fighting to keep her voice even. It wasn’t a question, it was a slow realization, and she gave the approaching Vulcan a side-eye as she said it. Her eyes stayed focused on Black, however, as if the woman was going to once again pull out a phaser and shoot someone in the head.

Thankfully, the Vulcan and the shy girl were now making conversation with each other, which left Maggie free to keep herself from interrogating Black. From what she had heard, the woman had been cleared of her charges, something about being “brainwashed.” However, those rumors? facts? had been hard to accept, especially to someone who was nary two feet away from Black when she had done what she did.

“Didn’t realize Starfleet was –” She began to spit out, her voice full of venom. Maggie managed to stop herself, and found herself fumbling for words. “...didn’t realize Starfleet was…” She had to say it somehow, she supposed. At least her voice was kinder this time. “They took you back?”

Piper, oblivious to the whole conversation of course, at least sensed the sparks flying between Maggie and Theresa, and so went over to bother Emily and Shione instead. She chose one to lean again and rub up against, successfully spreading dog fur all over someone’s pants. Her tongue lolling out of her mouth, she looked up at the other woman, her eyes begging for head scratches.

The atmosphere about the four way Mexican stand-off of a conversation was tense. The young woman introduce herself as Sloane moments after the Vulcan again introduced herself as Shione.

And with Murphy glancing at them while still staring daggers at Maz, she said; “And we’re all serving on the Philadelphia together…” The strain was audible in her voice.

In her head, Maz put two and two together quickly. All four of them were heading to the Philadelphia. She didn't know the other two women, but she knew that Murphy was a Tac officer. And since she was also currently assigned to the department, the sinking feeling in her stomach sunk even quicker.

Ah, dren. She's going to be my DH. I'm frelled.

“Didn’t realize Starfleet was –” Murphy began to say. Each word aimed at Maz, and dripping with venom. “...didn’t realize Starfleet was…”

Maz had seen Murphy take a step back as she realised who she was talking to. And with what Maz suspected was coming next, she too shifted her position a little.

“They took you back?” Said Murphy after what seemed like the longest pause ever and more self control than Maz deserved.

There wasn't anything that she could say in response. The Commander had every right to express how she felt. What had been done was unpardonable. And though she had been acquitted, it was Maz who had to live with it for the rest of her life.

And yet neither had said out loud what had happened between them. It would be obvious to the other two women by now that Murphy must detest Black and she was some kind of pariah to be avoided.

Even now after five years. Maz still asked herself that question. They took you back.

“They did. For my sins.”

Black’s reaction to Murphy, while much the same as Murphy’s reaction to Black, puzzled Maggie just a little. Last she recalled, the woman in front of her was Security, and with the total upheaval of the planet they were in orbit of down below, paperwork had not exactly made it onto her desk with a list of her department. Maggie had no idea Black had switched from orange to red, and was now one of hers.

“They did.” Black replied, her tone matching Maggie’s. It was clear that both women were thinking about what had happened that day, and the aftermath thereof. “For my sins.”

Maggie was dumbfounded. Absolutely speechless. All she could do was stare at Black, and wonder what in the hell had gone down. Clearly Starfleet, in their infinite wisdom, had welcomed her back, for whatever reason or reasons. All Maggie knew was that there had been a trial, and a ruling, and had willingly lost track of the officer she had served with, assuming (wrongfully so) that Black had been in jail up until this moment.

Definitely something I’ll be looking into… It was all Maggie could think, and could think to do, since interrogating -what rank was she now?- Black in the hallway was not an option. “Great.” She replied, almost through gritted teeth. She knew she could not hide her attitude. It was like getting in a shuttle wreck, and then just when you think rescue was coming, it starts to pour acid rain. She had to say something else, especially with the other two people there, plus the dog doing her best impression of an Ambassador.

“Glad to… have you aboard.” It was obvious that the words stuck in her throat, but there wasn’t really much else Maggie felt she could say. She turned to the other two women, desperate now to get out of this conversation. “Guess Captain Cranky Khumalo has never served with women before. We all managed to leave our quarters without his approval.”

Now it was Murphy who was taking a step back from everyone. “And we’re all serving on the Philadelphia together…”

She said it as if she was only now coming to terms with the idea of them all serving together. Emily couldn't read Murphy that well, but she seemed to be fighting to keep her voice at the usual level. A battle she was winning, for now anyway.

“Didn’t realize Starfleet was –” Murphy began to spit out at Black, her voice laced with venom “...didn’t realize Starfleet was…” She started fumbling for words for a minute, then her voice came out again, with a kindness Emily didn't entirely buy. “They took you back?”

What happened between these two? Do I want to know?

Then she felt something rubbing against her leg. Looking down, she found the dog, Piper, leaning against her and getting fur all over her trouser leg. Emily stared at the dog, slightly irritated, not that she showed it, and deciding between telling it off, ignoring it or giving it the attention it seemed to desperately want. Finally, after several moments of it staring back at her like it was begging to be shown attention, she knelt down and raised her left arm to scratch behind its ears gently. The dog managed to distract her from her surroundings so when she stood back up Black and Murphy now both seemed to be looking for a way to change the conversation.

“Guess Captain Cranky Khumalo has never served with women before. We all managed to leave our quarters without his approval.” Murphy said, looking towards them.

I wish I hadn't...

"Hes probably got more important things to worry about." Sloane said, "Whats he going to do about it anyway?" She left it open ended, hoping that would help steer the conversation away from the previous problem.

Shione chuckled at the sentiment of getting away with breaking the Captain's admonition against leaving their quarters, and while she was certain that Captain Khumalo meant what he said, however it was unlikely, she felt so long as they didn't encounter or bother any of his crew. "Well, it is good to meet you. This is my first transfer in over 6 years and so not as used to meeting new officers as I was at the beginning of my career."

There was some form of standoff between Black and Murphy, and it appeared that it dated back to the time that they were both stationed on the Sheridan, but given the intensity of their moods she decided that allowing them to work through this on their own was the wisest choice.

But whatever it was; Murphy did get her anger under control and at least for the moment it seemed she was ready to move on as she greeted Black, albeit with some effort basically cordially, in words anyway; if not in tone of voice.

While she waited for that moment Shione bent down and gave the lovely dog a thorough ear scritch. She missed Asoka, her little Westie, but she was here to do a job that Star Fleet had sent her to do and until she got that job done and or managed to find a way to reunite with her family then she was going to remain focused on this crew.

Piper was enjoying the attention, "Yes you are a beautiful girl, and you would love chasing my little fella around as much as he would love to be chased."

Without looking at anyone she spoke. Talking to pets can be quite therapeutic, she is a gorgeous dog Commander Murphy, you are lucky to have her with you."

As she stood Murphy commented, Shione liked to believe ; wryly: “Guess Captain Cranky Khumalo has never served with women before. We all managed to leave our quarters without his approval.” Murphy said, looking towards them.

Yet another chuckle which she was sure would surprise at least some or all of them. They had likely deduced that she was a pure blood Vulcan, and Vulcan's don't often do that.

As she stood  Sloane added her own take on their predicament;  "He's probably got more important things to worry about." Sloane said, "What's he going to do about it anyway?"

"Well;" Shione breathed; "I would say that as long as we do nothing that interferes in his ship's efficient implementation of it's assigned duties that he will not waste any effort on a few officers talking in the hall, we could however mitigate  even that probability by simply choosing one of our rooms and gathering there."

She turned back to face her original contact, and offered her hand; "It is good to meet you, Commander Murphy ; my sister S'hiarra said that having the opportunity to play fetch with Piper made the atmosphere of her first assignment on the Sheridan much more of a family experience and for that ; I thank you."

She paused; again, looking down at the Collie, and then looking back at the tactical officer, "Do you suppose there is any chance that Piper could get along with my sister's cat George? Before her Cairn terrier died from an illness George and the dog were the best of friends?"

She smiled at each of the other two, "I would be willing to host a get together, if you were all willing, we could simply bring in an extra chair or two, what do you think?

We certainly would benefit from getting to know one another as it seems likely we will be serving together."

“Great. Glad to… have you aboard.” Was all Murphy said after a moment before turning her attention solely to the other two. Maz didn't care one way or the other now that her morning, and probably the rest of her career was now going to be one long drawn out recrimination she suspected.

But while the three others were busy talking, it gave her a chance to observe the Vulcan woman. When she'd first appeared, Maz was sure she'd recognised her. But when she introduced herself, she hadn't recognised the name. But that meant nothing.

Maz was tactical now, but still spent years in security. And there were skills you didn't just let go. Observation was one.

While it had been Maz who had identified Murphy by name, and had asked Sloane for hers. Kurasa had offered hers several times, and had repeatedly used the others in conversation. That in itself was a tell tail of someone who liked to control situations. The repeated use of another's name was a dominance trait.

Sloane seemed to be a little meek by nature. But she hadn't said or done much else to give any more away. She'd backed out of the initial group at the start. And there was something else. She couldn't tell what.

And as Maz knew full well from prior experience, Murphy was not one to be trifled with. Tell the truth, she was surprised their conversation had actually gone so well.

However, it was when the name 'S'hiarra' was said out loud by Kurasa, that was what actually made Maz remember more. The slight giggle the woman had made, seemed off at the time, but memory was a fickle thing. She began searching the face. The lighting wasn't great in the corridor as Maz was still stood in her doorway, but she could just see the black in black of Betazoid eyes.

****! She cursed internally. Vulcans were touch telepaths, but she'd recalled that S'hiarra had once told her she was half Betazoid. And so was presumably her sister.

When she'd been counselled after the trial, she'd been taught some simple mental barriers she could use if she were in the presence of telepaths. And she'd barely ever used them. That she knew of except in the first few months after being returned to duty. It was more of a palliative measure she'd been advised given the nature of the attack on her that had resulted in...

She tried to push the though aside again, but the last few minutes along with the new realisation of a ranged telepath in close proximity, her anthropophobia began to well up.

Retreating a couple of feet back into her hutch and out of sight of the other three, she lent back against the wall and took a controlled breath to steady herself more and focus her minor defences before she considered returning to the corridor.

“Hes probably got more important things to worry about.” The woman with the light brown hair said. What was her name again? Maggie didn’t agree with her, but she also didn’t care what some manner-less man thought of her.

“What’s he going to do about it anyway?” Sloane added, and Maggie smirked in response. She didn’t know what anyone else’s rank was -except Lieutenant Commander Shione Kurasa, of course- but she knew her own rank and prestige could certainly stand up to Captain Khumalo. The man himself seemed poncy anyway.

As it were, Kurasa seemed to be making nice with Piper; maybe the dog would once again smooth everything over between people. “Well, I would say that as long as we do nothing that interferes in his ship's efficient implementation of its assigned duties, that he will not waste any effort on a few officers talking in the hall, we could however mitigate, even that probability by simply choosing one of our rooms and gathering there.”

Kurasa certainly talked like a Vulcan; long-winded as all heck. And it continued.

“It is good to meet you, Commander Murphy. My sister S'hiarra said that having the opportunity to play fetch with Piper made the atmosphere of her first assignment on the Sheridan much more of a family experience and for that, I thank you.”

Maggie had no idea who S’hiarra was, or who Piper had played fetch with however-many years ago, but smiled and said “Sure thing!” either way. Luckily, the Sheridan hadn’t been that long ago, and Maggie was just glad that fetch had been the lasting memory of the dog, and not something she had peed on or chewed on.

And it continued on.

“Do you suppose there is any chance that Piper could get along with my sister's cat George? Before her Cairn terrier died from an illness George and the dog were the best of friends.”

Maggie furrowed her brow; she wasn’t sure Piper had ever met a cat before, and she had been pleasantly surprised enough when she hadn’t reacted to the grey animal in the hallway.

“I would be willing to host a get together, if you were all willing, we could simply bring in an extra chair or two, what do you think? We certainly would benefit from getting to know one another as it seems likely we will be serving together.”

Kurasa had now spoken more in this moment than all the Vulcans on Bravo had spoken to Maggie combined in the last six months. Maggie was beginning to wonder if this lady was more than just Vulcan. She was certainly pushy about making friends. “Yeah…” Mags replied, trying to sound noncommittal. “We’ll see.” There was a pause, a beat, and she felt she had to explain herself. “Piper’s only ever seen holographic cats before. Real life ones are unpredictable.”

Saving her again, Piper barked at a person that was trying to pass by; a crewman with a dirty face, and an armload of equipment. “Sorry, ma’m, sorry, sorry,” he mumbled, squeezing by all four women and the dog. Maggie was quick to grab up the leash, and keep Piper from following the man to his intended destination.

“Piper…” Mags said with a stern voice, causing the collie’s swishing tail to pause. One of her front feet rose off the ground slightly, as if she was thinking of running, and Maggie wrapped the leash around her hand, increasing the tension. “Yeah…” Maggie muttered, not so much to herself as it was in general to those around her, “Maybe we’ll continue our walk…”
