== Welcome to your holodeck Cadet Streelan!

Read the following information carefully, because it has a fair amount of important information for you.  If you have any questions or difficulties at any time, please contact one of the following people for assistance.  We’d be glad to help you out.

Admiral Taylor: taylor@fed-space.com
Commander Jasal: sforcom@fed-space.net
Commander Allen: allen@fed-space.com

Remember during your time at the Academy that people have responsibilities such as school, jobs, and family, as well as maintaining our site. There are times when we may have to wait longer than we’d like for a reply to a post or a question. Patience and treating each other with respect and dignity are two things that are absolutely required of all members.

On the flip side, the Constitution states that players need to post at least twice a week.  If you find you are unable to keep up due to something coming up in real life responsibilities or you’re just going to be on holiday, please let one of the Admins know.  You can be granted a leave of absence for the length of time you think you’ll be away.  If you don’t let us know and you suddenly disappear, this could end up with you being considered AWOL and eventually removed from the active cadet roster.

Now… with all of that said, let’s get to your character’s bio!

Please begin by posting your bio using the template below. Once posted, your bio will be reviewed by an Evaluations representative. They will post comments for you and suggest any adjustments your bio might require.  Once they approve your bio, you will be assigned an instructor and your adventure will begin!

Federation Space is a written RPG. With that said, we ask that you try to pay attention to spelling and grammar in your posts.  Posts properly formatted are easier and more enjoyable for everyone to read. I strongly recommend you run your bio and any posts you make through a spell check before posting them.

Next are a few resources that can help you as you write your bio:
Be sure to check out playable races here: https://wiki.fed-spa...ry:PRC_Rated.
Our character development page is a great resource to help you fill out your bio form: https://wiki.fed-spa..._Development.
Along with character development is information about the Star Fleet Academy Curriculum, including Majors and Minors: https://wiki.fed-spa...rs_and_Minors.
One last thing, please take time to read and understand our site’s canon page.  This will help you understand what 'Trek' related information is included on our site. https://wiki.fed-spa...le=Site_Canon.
Again, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask!  And as always - have fun!

== Personal History ==

Date of Birth: 25/4/2422
Place of Birth: A local hospital in his hometown on Kaminar
Marital Status: Single
Siblings Name & Ages: N/A; Streelan is an only child, though he sometimes wishes he wasn't.
Mother's Name: Aradela
Father's Name: Artoth
Parent's Status: Deceased; killed as 'incentive' to get the local government to accede to their killers' demands.
Pets: None, he doesn't trust himself to take care of one as of yet.
Best Friend: A relatively short Kelpien girl called Aarva, whom he met in the equivalent of secondary school. The two became friends when he, in a rare spurt of initiative, approached her of his own accord when he saw that she was ostracized by their classmates for her height. The two became fast friends and remain in contact to this day; he talks to her over subspace comms or subspace letter when either one of them isn't available, regularly.

Personal History:

All things considered Streelan had an objectively cushy childhood growing up on the western coast of the continent of In’tar on Kaminar. Living in the local town of Rytan and born to a schoolteacher father and physician mother, he seemed to have a pretty good start in life. His father would teach him the basics of what he needed to know in life  when he could while his mother took care of his health and well-being the best she could and kept him well fed. It was almost the dream combination of parents in anyone’s eyes. His childhood was spent largely buried in books and reading (his father’s efforts) all manner of works, including those from Earth, Andor, Tellar and beyond that still. He discovered early on into childhood (unsurprisingly) that he found books easier to understand than people; at least with books they had a plotline you could follow.

Growing up, he unfortunately found himself being not exactly the best treated among his peers - while he was mild as most Kelpien children tended to be poor Streelan was additionally a shut-in that preferred to sit alone and read or study whatever he pleased over go outside and socialize with the other schoolchildren. This sadly meant that he did not have very many friends, which he didn’t quite mind, frankly. All he needed to do was focus on his studies, at least in his opinion. Knowing this his parents attempted to assist him in socializing by enrolling him in various after-school activities, none of which he was good at - or quite helped with his awkwardness or shut-in tendencies.

While things certainly seemed peaceful on Kaminar, at least at prima facie, they really weren't. While by and large most Kelpiens supported the new joint government, there still remained a portion of society who opposed the idea, believing that the alliance went against the natural order of predator and prey. For many years they remained a small yet vocal group, opposing the governing body of the planet and its decisions, largely not too obtrusive…

...at least, until the day of his 15th birthday. It should have been a normal birthday dinner at a local café,  just himself and his parents. He would've never suspected that the four Kelpiens sitting and talking in the corner seat had antiproton pistols under their clothes and had plans to terrorize the shop. He didn't expect them to pull out their weapons at the height of the dinner crowd and begin firing at the patrons when the café was at its fullest and certainly didn't expect to be hit in the back, the antiproton particles burning a hole through his shirt. He next felt an arm wrap round his throat, fabric soaked with some kind of chemical pressed to his nose, the sharp tang of chemicals up his nostrils…

All went black.

When Streelan next awoke he wasn't in the café anymore. He'd been taken to a house goodness knows where, where he'd been tied at the legs and handa and laid out on the floor with another five Kelpiens - including his parents. The four Kelpiens from before were roaming the room, talking into a communications array. They sounded aggressive and were making demands; to whom he didn't know. And oh, goodness gracious, they were shooting people, perhaps as a threat. He watched with horror as they fired upon and killed three of their hostages. It was horrifying to watch and hear: the screaming, the convulsing and then the horrible, rending silence before the firing started again. Then they moved on to his father, and eventually his mother.

What was a boy his age to do? He clung to his mother fervently, begging their captors to spare her life - but they refused to listen, and soon enough there was a barrel at her head. Streelan was forced to watch as the kidnapper fired, burning a hole through her head and killing her instantly. Streelan barely registered whatever happened next; yet again all went black. The last thing he heard before his head hit the floor was shouting and harsh antiproton fire.

He didn't know how long had passed when he next awoke. Now he was in a hospital gown and the light right above his face was far too bright. At his bedside was a law enforcement officer and a nurse, both of whom were gazing worriedly down at him. The news was given to him simply: he and his parents had been kidnapped as part of a campaign against the local government. Min didn't need the officer to say why they'd started killing their hostages. He could guess why from the context.

Seeing as he had few physical injuries he was discharged from the hospital soon enough and sent to live with his uncle and aunt in the capital city. The days that followed were hardly easy - in fact the proper term would be nightmarish. Literally. It was not uncommon for him to wake at night sobbing and crying and pining for his parents that would never come, having re-lived the entire ordeal of watching, then feeling five people die in nightmare form. During the day he would lay in bed or sit at the breakfast table to eat in complete silence, unconversational except when taken to the hospital for counselling and therapy. His friends would visit sometimes to see how he was, only to find that he had no desire to see or talk to them for the time being.

It would be several months of counselling and therapy and so on later when he was declared reasonably fit to return to school - possibly a mistake, on hindsight. Streelan positively buried himself in his studies, desperate to catch up on all the content he'd missed. He would attend school regularly of course, but everyone could see that he'd changed. Make no mistake, the Streelan they know had been quiet and introverted already; but at least that one had been somewhat conversational. Now he'd become nearly nonverbal, only speaking when called upon or at regular counselling sessions and even then he sounded dead. Outside of class he would hide himself in the school's garden, sitting under a tree with his textbooks open in his lap and studying furiously. Whenever anyone met the young man's eyes he would immediately break contact, turn away and scurry off if he could. At times he would snap at his friends to stop trying to talk to him if they persisted with their efforts - behavior that swiftly tacked the word 'former' onto his friends. Yes, it was harmful and yes, it hurt to push them away but at least the studying and the worry of a test and excelling on such the next week was enough to stave off the dreams somewhat.

It would be the rest of the year of this regular pattern of behavior before Streelan saw that he couldn't possibly go on like this. He nearly had a heart attack when he looked upon his final grades; he'd somehow made it through that year of school but only by the skin of his teeth in spite of all the studying he'd done. Rubbing salt in the wound was the fact that now he had no one's shoulder to cry on save his uncle and aunt's. All his friends had by now stopped contacting him, possibly afraid of another lashing out or being avoided again. For the first time in his life he was nearly truly alone.

He allowed himself the rest of the day to cry over his grades - and then he decided that it was time to rebuild. No matter how long it took.

The next few years to get himself to a semblance of baseline were hardly easy; in fact they were painful to live through and choking, almost. The process started by regaining his classmates' trust - apologising to them, forcing himself to look them in the eyes when they talked to him and even forcing little smiles.  Smiles helped the mood after all. He also began to attend counselling regularly; opening up about the incident was by no means easy of course. Why would it be? Things began slow, especially after graduating from secondary education and moving on to a tertiary institution in the capital city. It was here that he developed a like for athletics; he joined the school track and field team. Thankfully this time his classmates were quite a bit more understanding and willing to give him space where it was due.

Tertiary wasn't quite enough though; Streelan knew he had bigger goals ahead of him to reach for. The idea of going into space and doing good by other people was a noble goal, he reckoned, and Starfleet was where he thought his destiny lay. He departed for Earth aged eighteen, bound for Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. He had a firm goal in mind: to become a tactical officer. He'd realized by now that life was precious, very precious, and that there were likely many, many others like him who'd lost loved ones and had their lives irrevocably changed by it. He wanted to make sure that never happened again, not to him and certainly not to anyone else. No one else should have to suffer through that loss.

Suffice to say that he was a little overwhelmed by the size of the campus upon first seeing it, or the sheer variety of his fellow cadets. Everything was so big and so shiny to him, having come from the equivalent of the suburbs. This time he did make some effort to try and connect with others during the course of his studies; after all he couldn’t stay an island, as his human friends sometimes said. This being said the process was difficult and long, and lasted throughout his tenure of study. When he did interact with others, however, they found him to be surprisingly pleasant to speak with and knowledgeable if a bit (sorry, very) nerdy, if a little formal-sounding and meek.

Otherwise he was an excellent student, once again without too many friends but the few he did have he kept close and dear to him, a practice he continues to keep to this day. It was during the course of his studies that he heard of the stereotype that Kelpiens that had not gone through vahar’ai were meek and mild, and tended to be pushovers, in being terrified of anything and everything. That he did not like - and he made sure that no one had the opportunity to laugh at him for it. He knew of many Kelpiens who remained steadfastly courageous and passionate despite never having gone through that significant change and he wanted to prove that he could be one of them.

As such in addition to his training and studies he took up sporting. Track and field, basketball, even high jump - it wasn’t too common for him to spend his time training for all three for hours on the holodeck. Aside from such endeavors he even spent some time as a student journalist. Plenty of things that'd place him front and center of attention and help him learn to handle it, so to speak.

== Personality ==

Academy Majors: Tactical

Academy Minors: Security

Hobbies & Past-Times: Reading (fiction works are his favorites, in particular books of the mystery and the occasional romance genre, though no cheap plots, thanks), chess (he's only an amateur, though, and plays solely to help him focus and strategize), cooking (though he's not very good at it).

Short-Term Goals: Graduate from Starfleet Academy as a tactical officer

Long-Term Goals: Become a more confident and outgoing version of himself, captain his own starship someday.

Personality: The somewhat commonly held notion that Kelpiens whose ganglia have not yet fallen lack courage has long irritated Streelan to no end. He has known plenty who have fire enough in their bellies, even without going through vahar'ai, and he aspires to be one of those people. In fact it is one of the reasons why he dons a Starfleet uniform. He certainly tries hard to be courageous as he can, only that sometimes simple nervousness or predisposition to flight rather than fight takes over. Despite this he stays rather reserved as he has been since the shooting on his sixteenth birthday; he'd be considered a shut-in by most standards, though he has tried (and continues to try) to break this perception of him. Friends, colleagues and more than friends have all noted that he isn't exactly antisocial, however; he just has a little shell of comfort that he doesn't find it easy to come out of. It should elsewise be noted that he is generally amiable to those he interacts with, remaining just likeable enough while doing so.

Sense of Humor: Streelan doesn't laugh very much; since nearly dying in teenhood he's found very few things funny.

Phobias: Being kidnapped and held at weaponpoint.

Likes: Fruit of all kinds especially strawberries, a good story (told verbally or in book form, it doesn't matter), good hugs

Dislikes: Rudeness, insensitivity, seeing someone alone and ostracized because they are different

Pet Peeves/Gripes: People telling him that he'll 'grow out' of his trauma eventually, inconsiderate others, being stereotyped as timid and a coward.

Bad Habits / Vices: Streelan tends to stutter a bit, when especially nervous. Maintaining eye contact is a bit hard for him as well, though rest assured he tries his best.

Achievements: Streelan considers getting into Starfleet Academy and doing well at all an achievement in and of itself, considering everything he went through.

Disappointments: He wishes quietly that he'd done a little better in that one Federation Standard spelling competition held in his primary school; he was a single letter away from the champion's title.

Illnesses: Streelan suffers from no illnesses, though if you count mental health conditions in this category he still suffers from survivor's guilt and PTSD, having been the sole survivor of the massive shooting that took his parents from him.

Strengths: Arguably mental resilience considering everything he's went through thus far. Streelan is also a hard worker and will spend all the time and effort he needs in order to complete something to the best of his abilities.

Weaknesses: Streelan has difficulty with making friends and forming bonds in general; some part of him feels that it might just be best to not bother at all considering how anyone and everyone could be taken from him at any moment, especially after the incident which changed his life.

Fears: Having those he cares about taken from him, being kidnapped and restrained (more intensely than others), being not good enough as a tactical cadet, chasing those he cares about away.

Prejudices: Streelan has a strong dislike for those who think Kelpiens are cowardly before vahar'ai. He views it as a negative stereotype which needs to be quashed and as such tries to fulfill that role himself.

== Questions ==

Most Painful Experience: The shooting and hostage situation that took the lives of his parents and three other Kelpiens, which he had to witness for himself. He in fact was clinging to his mother's arm when she was shot; he felt her grow cold when it happened.

Best Time: Receiving his acceptance letter to Starfleet Academy informing him that he'd passed the gruelling entrance examination,

Most Crucial Experience: Deciding that he needed to turn his life around and out of the mental slump he'd been put into by the shooting - and thereafter to join Starfleet.

Role Model: Saru, after hearing stories of his life in Starfleet before his subsequent 'death'.

== On account of Streelan's species and his presence in Starfleet, I was asked to separately write something about how the Kelpiens developed following the close of Discovery season 2 such that they might arrive at such a point in societal development pending approval in this same thread. If I've somehow misunderstood what was required of me in this aspect with my following writing please do contact me on Discord! ==

Following the battle with Control, it became clear to the newly opened eyes of both Kelpien and Ba'ul alike that, in this much, much more dangerous universe than either side had ever imagined, they could not afford to stay separate and fight like bitter enemies or predator and prey if either side wanted to survive and not be pushed and kicked around by others who would seek to do just that - and that they might not be so lucky coming out of the next threat to their survival. Though it was not easy for either side to accept, they needed to come together and resolve things, difficult as it might seem.

At first tensions ran high at negotiations; each side distrusted and feared the other. Sometimes meetings would come to abrupt, sometimes violent and occasionally bloody end. As pressing as the need to survive was, how could one expect to dispel centuries of fear and misconception in the span of a few weeks? It would be the final decision of both sides to reach out to the Federation for help, taking up the initial offer of Captain Christopher Pike to assist in negotiating a new balance between both peoples.

It would be a long while of tough negotiations, several headaches and many sleepless nights on all sides of the negotiating table before an agreement, albeit a somewhat wobbly one, was reached between the two races. The Federation would assist with the formation of its new, united government and play a small part in teaching these people how to govern as one - societal change would be up to the Kelpiens and Ba'ul themselves to implement.

Society itself would take a long time to adjust. Many were apprehensive about this new and sudden change. The Kelpiens in particular were afraid at first when Ba'ul walked the roads of their small villages, and the same on the other side when the Kelpiens visited their far more advanced cities. Tensions warmed  eventually, however, thanks to vocal individuals such as Siranna, the sister of late Starfleet officer Saru, took further steps to promote societal cohesion such as cultural exchanges. It was through such change that the Kelpien and Ba'ul's space service began to take shape, training conducted by Siranna and the others who'd fought Control with her, along with suitably trained Ba'ul personnel.

It would only be the near end of the 24th century that tensions settled somewhat at last - and the newly formed Kelpien-Ba'ul Alliance announced its want of membership in the Federation following a planetwide referendum. While society had improved much from when it'd first started out, it was public sentiment that joining up with other like-minded planets - especially Earth - might better teach them how to govern themselves, as well as promote interspecies harmony.

== That is a good start to how we can incorporate the Kelpien's as full members (or at least provisional members) and explain you joining Star Fleet. While I haven't read your bio as I will leave that up to the bio evaluators, from a canon stand point we can now say that the Kelpien's are members of the Federation and you would not require the need for a command level officers recommendation. I will tweak it a little to make it fit with the rest of site canon and then get it added to the wiki. ==

==Good evening, Cadet, and welcome to Federation Space! I'm Lieutenant Varani Shanth, and I'm here to help you with your bio!

First off, I need to make sure that you sent the Kelpian information to the Creative Director via email; this area will go away once you graduate, so we need to make sure they've got it so it can be taken care of.

As for your bio proper, you've got a great one going here, and I have to thank you for giving me a lot more to work with than most cadets do. However, I do need you to trim down your personal history somewhat. The scene you crafted is fantastic, but the place for that is in a subplot while you're an active player, not your history. That part of your bio is meant to give anyone reading it an overview of who you are and what you've done, not a detailed scene. In addition, the history is intended to give you hooks to expand and explore later; the more detailed you make it now, the less chance you have to improvise and explore things later.

So, and I can't believe I'm actually saying this, I need you to trim your history back a bit. Condense the kidnapping to a paragraph or two, but make sure you save a copy of it somewhere. It's really good, and  you'll want to use it later. It just doesn't need to be here. Also, condense your Personality answer. Those questions need to be quick to give the reader an idea of what the character is like; most of what you put is covered in your history in more detail, so there's no need to reiterate the point.

Once you've made these changes, please repost your bio here in full, and we'll continue on. Thank you, and again, welcome!==

He next felt an arm wrap round his throat, fabric soaked with some kind of chemical pressed to his nose, the sharp tang of chemicals up his nostrils… before all went black.

Streelan was taken to a safe house, where he was forced to watch and witness as his kidnappers negotiated furiously with the local government to accept their cause - and kill one hostage every time their demands were refused. In total Streelan was forced to watch the slaughter of four other Kelpiens - including both parents - and might have lost his own life too had the local law enforcement not intervened and taken him to a hospital.

He would spend the next many months a changed boy, mostly silent to the point of nonverbal, listless and unwilling to interact unless he absolutely had to. During this period he understandably lost a good few of his friends, which only served to make his mental health deteriorate more - and it would take nearly being retained in his grade for poor grades to make him realize that things had to change.

The next few years to get himself to a semblance of baseline were hardly easy; in fact they were painful and arduous, full of sessions with counselling personnel and a lot of reflection and regaining the trust of his classmates and peers.  It was here that he developed a like for athletics; he joined the school track and field team.

Completing tertiary education wasn't quite enough though; Streelan knew he had bigger goals ahead of him to reach for.

Everything was so big and so shiny to him, having come from the the suburbs.

That he did not like - and he made sure that no one had the opportunity to laugh at him for it with his performance. Where he lagged behind, he worked hard to bridge the gap.

== Personality ==

Personality: Despite his efforts Streelan is a nervous, introverted little stringbean with a concerning lack of confidence or self esteem who sometimes has trouble looking others in the eye; he hasn't ever been good at making friends and that continues to this day even with extensive help from counselling staff. He continues to try even now, though, and he's somewhat optimistic that someday he'll get better at it, and if he's lucky forge more than just that. That being said as introverted as he is he finds it in himself to be kind and polite whenever he needs to be, and it is through this outlet that he's made his woefully few friends, whom he treasures greatly.

== Questions ==

==Getting better, Cadet! I would ask you to work on the Personality answer again; it's still too long. I see at least three times that you say variations of "trying to improve" there. Please try to get it down to no more than two sentences, and using a semicolon to splice two into one is cheating!  :D

Other than that, I like the work you did on the personal history. It's not as daunting for someone trying to learn about you as it was before, so that's always a plus.

The last thing I need to mention, and I completely missed it when I did my first pass on your bio: your birthdate. You have it listed as April 25, 2422, but 2422 is the current year in-game. Since your age is listed at 22, please correct that to 2400.

That's it! If you can get that personality answer condensed, we should be good to go; just repost your bio here, and I'll give it one last look before turning you over to your full instructor! Good luck, and hope you're doing well!==

== Questions ==

LESSON ONE

== Hello Cadet Streelan .  Welcome to Federation Space RPG (also referred to as Fed Space).  I’m Lieutenant Amelina Whittaker and I’ll be your instructor during your time in the Academy.   Fed Space is a great game and community, and we hope you enjoy it.  If you ever have any questions, don’t ever hesitate to ask here or email me at scullycat34@gmail.com.   I ask you to take time to read and understand our site's canon page.  It's important for you to understand this information.

Before we dive into our first lesson, I want to bring to your attention to a good resource on our wiki that can help you understand your department duties:

With that out of the way, let’s start with Lesson one: Formatting basics

Font Usage and Third Person, Past Tense:

Because Fed Space has players all over the world, we use a standardised set of formatting rules. By using one style, it makes it easier for everyone to follow and understand each other’s posts.

The first thing to know is that we post in third person, past tense.  An example of this would be:

Amelina was so excited to be teaching cadets, that she couldn’t wait to get to the classroom.

NOT: I was so excited to be teaching cadets, that I couldn’t wait to get to the classroom.

The next thing to know is that we use double spacing between paragraphs and between our character’s spoken lines. This means when you write a spoken line with quotation marks “ ”, you would leave a space to indicate a break in the paragraph.  A good rule to follow is ‘When in doubt, double space!’

Character Internal Thoughts:

To show a character’s thoughts and/or to add extra emphasis, we use italics.  When writing a character’s thoughts, it’s acceptable to write in first person.  For example, for my character to show a thought, it would look like:

I can’t wait to visit my Father this weekend, I wonder if I should surprise him or not

To write in italics, just press the i button and begin typing. Your text should show up in italics. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl i (for PC), Command i (Apple) to get italics. When you are finished with your thoughts, simply hit the i button (or keyboard shortcut) again to end the italics.  Please note: If you use your phone or tablet to post, you might be required to use the bulletin board code (bbcode). The bbcode for italics is:  [ i ] Text [ / i ]   (without the spaces).

Showing Emphasis

To make something really stand out in your post, for example, if a character was shouting, use bold text. For example, to show emphasis for my character, this would look like:

Amelina loved to go hiking

The procedure is the same as italics, just press the b button instead of the i. The keyboard shortcut Ctrl b (for PC), Command b (for Apple).  Note: The bbcode for phone users is  [ b ] Text [ / b ]   (without the spaces).

Telepathic Communication

It is rare that a character has the ability to communicate telepathically. In general, telepathy is closely monitored by our Senior and Commanding Officers to make sure it isn’t abused and players are not "super-simming" their character.  With that said, there are a few telepathic races on Fed Space and on occasion telepaths will speak to each other through this unique skill. Telepathic communication is shown like this:

~ Hello, I am speaking directly into your mind. ~

If your character is not telepathic then, in general, you don’t need to worry about this technique, but be aware it exists in case you see crewmembers on your ship or others using it.

Using Communication Badges or Comm Badges

Characters can often receive verbal communications through a communication device, such as a comm badge, from another crew member or the computer.  When receiving a message, you should drop the quotations “ ” and instead use brackets [ ].

For example, if I received a message from another officer, it would look something like this:

          [Commander Allen to Lieutenant Whittaker. Report to Holodeck Eleven immediately.]

If you are the one speaking to somebody through a comm device, you would still use the quotations “ ”.

Out Of Character posting or OOC:

OOC posting is what I’m doing now. OOC text is surrounded by == ==.   You should use OOC when you want to talk to another player and not write it as part of the storyline.  You won’t need to do this in general discussion areas such as your ship’s OOC sections like Crew Announcements as well as in Hailing Frequencies.

Proofing Posts:

When writing a post, it’s important to take time to run your posts through a word processor, like Word.  While word processors won’t find all grammar and spelling errors, they can help find and correct any errors before you post.  Rereading your post can help catch forgotten ending punctuation, too. You don’t need to be a perfect speller or grammar whiz, but taking the time to do this extra step will make it easier for everyone to understand our posts.

Another useful tip when you copy & paste a post over to the site is always select post as plain text as that will eliminate the black background and allow you and us to see & read it more clearly. Also spacing is good too and we usually suggest a one line/sentence gap between paragraphs.

A good way to get the feel of these formatting rules and to get a feel of the site in general is to browse the forums.  Take some time to look at the different ships and station and notice how our players are using the elements listed above.

Feel free to post in our Academy Lounge/Cafeteria/Gardens area.  This will provide you extra practice in using the techniques listed as well as meet other cadets in training.

With all that said, let’s get to some posting!  Your assignment is to respond to my post, and use the formatting elements discussed above.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.  Good luck and of course, have fun!

== Holodeck 11 - 14:00 Hours ==

Following a rather intense training exercise that had taken up most of the morning, the last thing Amelina wanted was to be late for her next cadet who’s final exam had been scheduled for holodeck eleven. So after a quick change and lunch, the brunette instructor arrived outside said holodeck, just before the allotted time. As was her way of doing things, Amelina then entered the currently empty room, before double checking that everything was in place and once satisfied, she waited for her Cadet to arrive.

Streelan didn't like to be late. Lateness was an indication of his attitude towards his training and life in general; it sent a clear signal that he simply didn't care enough for what he did and would do - and as such he did his best to make punctuality a habit of his. He adjusted his uniform and set off for the holodeck ten minutes before the stipulated time at a moderate trot, heading for the holodeck he knew would take some time to reach. I wonder what I'll be doing, he wondered to himself. Perhaps yet another tactical mission. An away mission into a Klingon base perhaps, fighting my way through hordes to get to my mission objective. The thought made him shudder, and his ganglia quiver with a mix of trepidation and anticipation. He'd known this job would be dangerous coming into Starfleet Academy; it was what he'd trained for!

Nevertheless the thought made him nervous - this was his final exam, for goodness' sake. He would need to perform - his graduation depended upon it. Realizing that only served to inflate the little ball of jittery emotion in his ribcage and make him swallow thickly as he rounded the bend, taking him straight to the holodeck at exactly the right time as was disclosed to him.

No turning back now, he thought to himself. You are ready, and you shall show that you are ready. He came to attention before the brunette human officer, tilting his head to meet her eyes given the rather obvious height difference.

"Cadet Streelan reporting as ordered, ma'am!" He declared, holding his gangly, bald head high. Or at least, tried to.

Hopefully he'd made a decent enough first impression.

== A great start Cadet, however I can't see any use of emphasis in your post. If you could use it in your next post that would be great in order for us to proceed ==

LESSON TWO

== Lesson two: Plots, GM Input, and New Content:

We have two types of plots here on Federation Space: the main plot and subplots.

Main plots affect the entire ship and are directed by a Game Moderator (GM).

Subplots are an underlying story that’s being told within the main plot.  A subplot can be run by any player who has received approval by the ship’s CO (or FO).

An example of the difference between the two:  The main plot is about the ship falling under attack by an unknown enemy,  whereas a subplot would be where a character is exploring a new relationship or taking part in a ship celebration.

GMs:

Game Moderators (GMs) guide the ships’ missions along. Every ship has a mission, of which only the GMs of a ship know the mission details.

Your job is to write what your character sees and what their reaction is. The GM will provide any unknowns about the plot.  This input will have significance to the direction of the mission. This is why characters should keep posts open ended on anything that might affect the mission’s direction or outcome.   As your character performs an action, such as performing a diagnostic scan, leave the result of the scan unknown.  The GM will explain what the outcome of the action is.

When you need GM input on something, for example results of a diagnostic scan, one only has to make a request at the end of the post.  The request can look like:

== GM Input, please. ==

Or it can also be a more specific request, such as:

== GM Input:  Result of the diagnostic, please. ==

An example of this would be, == GM input: What are the results of the scan that Amelina ran on the diagnostics? ==

Take a look around at the active ships on Federation Space to see how characters ask for GM input.

New Content feature:

I would like to mention the ‘view new content’ feature on the top right of our forum page.  This tab is a quick and handy way to see who has posted since your previous visit to Federation Space.

Time for more writing!   From now on I will be acting as the GM for you.  In your next post, make sure to use the formatting techniques learned in lesson one and find a way to ask for GM input.

If you need any help, or would like more clarification, don’t hesitate to ask.  ==

== Holodeck 11 ==

Almost as if she had a sixth sense, Amelina stood prepared and ready to welcome her Cadet as the doors to holodeck opened. While she hadn’t taught Cadet Streelan personally until now, Amelina was aware of him and how he was the first Kelpien that she had met. As he approached and attempted to make a good first impression, Amelina smiled warmly, hoping to reassure him that he had.

“ At ease Cadet and welcome to your final exam, if you would like to get ready then we’ll begin”.

Giving Streelan a few moments to mentally prepare himself for what was about to happen, Amelina then instructed the computer to activate the final exam. Disappearing as the room changed around him, revealing the inside of the runabout Tranquillity. Streelan would be the assigned pilot, tasked with retrieving a small group of stranded scientists along with two fellow officers from the USS Haven.

== As discussed and for further clarification, the scenario is a rescue mission by Streelan & two other officers :-)

Your destination is the remote planet Moressa VI, where the scientists were tasked with surveying the landscape for possible colonisation. However they encountered some issues that left them stranded and subsequently reached out for help ==

==Holodeck 11==

Streelan spang into action as soon as the final words of his mission briefing left the lieutenant's mouth, and she vanished from view as the gunmetal grey of the holodeck's interior was painted away and replaced with the runabout instead.  You'll be fine. You can do this - this is what you've spent the previous few years of your life preparing for, he thought to himself. In short, there was no time to worry. He was more than qualified.

To start, he glanced down at the console directly in front of him as he dropped into the pilot's seat, gauging the distance and time that remained between them and Moressa VI - time was of the essence, of course, and he was sure that every member of this away team knew that. Their colleagues' lives were at stake.

"Have we any indication of why the scientists became stranded?" He asked one of the other officers that'd accompanied him. "And what do we know about the planet itself?"

==GM input: the time and distance to Moressa VI from their location and the requested information on the issues faced such that the scientists are stranded, and on the plant itself please!==

LESSON THREE

== Lesson three: NRCs, character usage, and site navigation:
Non-rated characters, or NRCs, are characters used by players as well as GMs to help fill crew gaps in ships. Starships usually have large crews and since we don’t have enough players to fill all those roles, we use NRCs.

We have two types of NRCs: Independent and Temporary.

Independent NRCs are like a Player Rated Character (PRC), in that they get played as their own character. These NRCs are registered and you can distinguish them through their character names. You’ll see something along the lines of Ensign Doe {Allen}, with the PRC character’s last name in brackets at the end. And while these NRCs are similar to PRCs, they are not a second rated character (SRC). They also do not earn points or medals as you would with your PRC.  Also, your PRC must be a Lt [JG] or higher and have the approval of your Commanding Officer to create an Independent NRC.

Temporary NRCs on the other hand, can be created by anyone. They are not as developed as Independent NRCs or PRCs and they do not have bios. They are usually created for quick tasks, and are used for times when you need to post with other players on the ship.

To make a Temporary NRC post, all you need to do is place an OOC notation at the top of the post. You’ll probably see several variations, but they typically look like:

== Lieutenant Vanya Lars,  Temp Security  NRC ==

In the case of both NRCs, you play the character from the NRCs perspective, almost as if you have a second character.  You can only play an NRC that is one rank higher than your own. This means that if you’re an Ensign, you can have NRCs that are Midshipmen, Ensigns, or Lieutenant Junior Grades.

Character Hijacking:
The next element we’re going to cover is character usage. Unless you have permission from the player, you cannot post any speech, thoughts or movements for another character (PRC or NRC) that isn’t yours, unless the character has already done so in game. This is called character hijacking and is not permitted on Fed Space. Some players might not mind, but even minor things such as a nod of a head or a shrug of the shoulders can be considered hijacking.

 For example, if you wrote in your next post that Amelina Whittaker suddenly appeared and started shooting targets, you would have hijacked that character.

Character Movement on Ships
I’m sure you have noticed a ship has multiple threads on it for various locations that a player can post, such as the bridge, sickbay, and security offices.  Oftentimes while on a mission, players travel throughout the ship to accomplish their orders. To help follow the plot when a player is transitioning from one thread to another, they should make a notation at the end of thei post like this:   >> Sickbay >>   The arrows and location found at the bottom of a post tells readers where this character will post next.

When the player makes their next post, the player should make a notation at the beginning of their post like this:   << Bridge <<     The arrows and location found at the top of a post indicate that is where a player has just come from.

The Fed Space wiki offers a great resource to help you out with your posts.  Be sure to spend some time checking it out.  The information on the wiki is also ‘Fed Space canon,’ which can sometimes differ from Star Trek canon, so look there first when you’re researching something.  Don’t feel limited to only looking at the wiki pages for your department, because the other departments will have information, you’ll find it quite useful.

As previously mentioned, Fed Space canon differs slightly from that of Star Trek, mainly because this game happens 40+ years after the Dominion War. Since the Dominion War, there have been many conflicts and wars. It’s been very rocky, but all the history from the start of Year 1 to the last entry on that page have been written and played here on Federation Space.  Make sure you spend some time checking out our site history.

Our Academy pages contain a lot of valuable resources for you as well. Be sure to check them out, especially the New Cadet FAQ while you’re there.

To help you become accustomed to organisation of our wiki, I have a few questions for you to answer:

1. Who is the Chief Tactical Officer of the USS Philadelphia  ?
2. How many types of torpedo are there ?
3. What is the Type II phaser used for ?

So, in your next post, you can either control a Temporary NRC of your own choosing or Lieutenant Lars  and give me the answers to the questions.

Good luck! ==

== Results of GM Input ==

The Tranquillity would arrive at Moressa VI in approximately thirty minutes as the Haven was currently just outside the Moressa System. Given the nature of the mission, it was decided to send a runabout to rescue the scientists and their equipment, but the ship was close by should there be any further problems.

As for the scientists, they haven’t  been able to leave due to losing their shuttle in an unexpected cave-in while drilling for soil samples.

Moressa VI is a typical class m planet, rich in various minerals and two thirds of the planet is covered by ocean. The scientists camp is on the second largest landmass in the north west region of the planet ==

"The cave they were drilling in collapsed in on them and made them lose their shuttle. Serves those bozos right given where they chose to do it." Snickered the young Andorian zhen seated to his right. Her antennae waved about atop her head as she spoke; clearly she found the whole situation highly amusing. "The planet itself? Your run-of-the-mill M-class, two-thirds ocean, one-third land, rich in minerals. Bo-ring. Gimme a Y-class any day." The Andorian then crossed her arms, smirking to herself.

==Back to Streelan==

"Thank you."

The mission seemed easy enough. Reach Moressa IV and get into orbit, scan the planet for the scientists' bio-signatures and equipment and transport them aboard with the on-board emergency transporter before returning to the Haven. No problem - at least at prima facie. Streelan couldn't help but feel like there was a caveat in play somewhere, however. The mission was easy - far too easy for a final exam.

For now, though, their priority was reaching the planet and finding who they'd come for - and they'd have a good thirty minutes to consider the other possibilities. Ignoring the attitude of the officer whom he'd just spoken to Streelan punched in their course and sat back. One thing at a time, he told himself.

"Here is our plan of action." He announced confidently. "Science station, as soon as we enter orbit of Moressa IV, please take us to the away team's last known location and scan the area for their bio-signatures. If and when we locate them stand by to transport them and their equipment aboard if possible. If we encounter any other unforseen circumstances we shall deal with them on the spot. Understood?"

So why did he still feel like they were flying into something far more dangerous than he knew?

Aside from that and a space missing between the temp NRCs name and where the paragraph begins, we'll proceed once you've reposted ==

==I will be writing this response assuming that by 'losing their shuttle' means that it was crushed or badly damaged in the cave-in. If this is not the case I will gladly correct my response accordingly.==

==Ensign Shariva zh'Thann, Temp Science Officer==

==Back to Streelan==

==GM input: his colleagues' responses, please!==

LESSON FOUR

== Lesson Four: Participation Points, Rank, Chain of Command:

Participation Points and Rank:
Participation points are issued on the first of every month.  This system is in place to allow for the progression of ranks.  Once a character earns a certain amount of points, they’ll receive a promotion to the next rank. There are a few caps in place because, let's face it, over time without the caps the site would be overrun with captains and admirals with nowhere for them to go.

To access the monthly points charts, click on the Red Alert thread on our forums page, then Monthly Point Tables.   Read more about participation points, positions, and rank caps in the Federation Space Constitution.

Participation points are awarded by the Commanding Officer (CO) and approved up the chain of command by the Fleet Commander (FC) and finally, the Commander in Chief (CinC). Everyone earns participation points every month, depending on how active a player you are, and can vary between each CO. If you have any questions about how your CO awards points, please go up your chain of command when you are assigned to a vessel.  They will gladly let you know their policy.

Another way for you to earn points is to hold various site positions, such as Department Head (DH), First Officer (FO), Commanding Officer (CO), etc. or through earning medals.  A list of medals and their point values are found on the medals page on the wiki. Medals are typically awarded to players who go above and beyond what is expected on the site.

While we do have a points system in place, it is suggested you don’t play for the sole reason of collecting points or positions.  Your enjoyment will be more if you write and take part in things for the fun of it, and not an attempt to ‘win’.  This community is about writing, growing your character, and being a part of the Fed Space family.

As I mentioned above, there are several ranks you can achieve over time. The abbreviated forms and names are listed below.
Mid – Midshipman
Ens – Ensign
Lt (JG) – Lieutenant (Junior Grade)
Lt – Lieutenant
LCdr – Lieutenant Commander
Cdr – Commander
Capt – Captain
Cmdr – Commodore
RAdm – Rear Admiral
VAdm – Vice Admiral
Adm – Admiral
FAdm – Fleet Admiral

Chain of Command:
The Chain of Command is the order in which you should follow should you require any assistance with an issue or have any questions or concerns in or out of game. There are explanations of each rank provided in our Constitution.

We’ll start from the first person who you would contact and continue from there:
Department Head (DH)
First Officer (FO)
Commanding Officer (CO)
Fleet Commander (FC)
Commander in Chief (CinC)
President

Posting Rates and Leave of Absence:
Fed Space is an RPG that is made of players from all over the world. Because of this, we ask you to have patience with other players, realising that it might take a few days for a reply. As in our Constitution, you should post a minimum of twice a week.

If you find that you can’t make that posting rate, email your DH, FO, and CO and request a Leave of Absence (LOA).  In your email, request you need an LOA, letting them know the reason and when you expect to be back. Doing this can avoid players wondering where you’ve gone to, or you wondering where another player has gone to.  It can also keep you from being considered Absent Without Leave (AWOL), which will cause your account to be suspended.

More questions for you to answer:
1. What is the chain of command for the Tactical  department of the USS Philadelphia ?
2. Where would you find the crew lounge on the USS Titania?
3. What class of ship is the USS Artemis ?
4. Have a look at the active starships on the site. List your top three ship assignment preferences. This doesn’t mean you will be assigned to one of those you list as another ship might be in need of an officer in your department.

After answering the questions, please continue the story, remembering to use proper formatting techniques and requesting GM input. Also continue to use the temp NRCS and as usual, if you have any questions, please be sure to ask.  Have fun!  ==

Both Ensign zh’Thann and their other colleague from Engineering, LT(JG) Max Wilkinson responded positively to the plan and the rest of their journey was uneventful or so they thought as the runabout got closer to its destination. The Tranquillity was about five minutes away from the planet when it struck a gravity well, shaking the ship violently in the process and causing several alarms to sound.

"Ah, crap." The Andorian's antennae twisted sharply inwards as the gravimetric shears pitched her forward, face first, into the console in front of her. "Sir, we appear to be stuck in a gravity well. Of course it's gotta happen." She puffed before asking, "Orders?"

==Back to Streelan==

Well, okay. He should probably have expected this, he thought to himself. Clearly the cadet final exam wasn't going to be as simple as flying towards the planet and picking their comrades up, all nice and easy. As soon as he'd recovered from being thrown from his seat onto the floor by the violent shaking he clambered back into his seat. He knew that escaping the pull of a gravity well wasn't easy for a starship, let alone a tiny little Danube class runabout - but he had to try regardless. The lives of the scientists on Moressa IV and their safe and successful rescue depended upon him.

"Contact the Haven and inform them of our situation." He barked, hands already flying over the helm controls. Well, not so much barked as raised his voice shakily and hope that it sounded authoritative. "All hands, stand by. I will be attempting to engage warp and escape the gravity well while we still can." Or so he hoped. Fingers flying over the controls he tried to turn the runabout about face - and push the small craft to the limits of its warp capability as soon as its nose faced back the way they'd come. He only hoped that it'd be enough.

LESSON FIVE

== Final Lesson:

This final lesson will be a bit different in that we will not be continuing the story, but instead, you will be writing a practice introductory post.

This is a very important post, as it is the very first impression your new crew will have of you. It introduces the crew to your character so they can interact with you as well as provide them an example of your posting style.

Your assignment is to write your post as if it were your very first day reporting to your assignment. Choose a ship on our forums and report to the Commanding Officer on the bridge. Make sure to do your research about the ship you choose, noting who the Commanding Officer is and other details about the ship.  You should also include a description of your character in the post.

Remember to use the techniques learned throughout the past lessons in your post.  There is no need to include an NRC in your post.

Good luck and as always, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. ==

Step one: Bury your head in your new assignment - that is, learn all you can about her and her crew and her missions. Learn about the scope of mission you'll be expecting to see over the next few years. Streelan had done this to an excess, almost, spending a great deal of the past few days (and a few nights, too) studying just that. Hell, bits and pieces of the logs he'd read over still swam in his head.

Step two: Read up on the type of person your new commanding officer is. Streelan had done this diligently, too, picking up and writing down or memorizing any little details he could catch about captain Crawford. What a heart attack he'd had upon hearing that she was apparently the no-nonsense, stern kind of commander; admittedly he'd been hoping for someone more forgiving than she was touted to be, hopefully more tolerant of his bumbling-

Stop it, he'd chided himself. She'll put some fire in your belly yet, which is what you need, isn't it? Sure, working under her might not be easy, but he hadn't spent the last few years of his life working himself raw studying and training only to wig out upon finding that his commanding officer wasn't the mollycoddling sort.

Step three: Walk onto the ship, settle in and find the captain as soon as possible. He'd done that too, nervously sidling into his thankfully empty quarters, deposited his bags, smoothened out his uniform and checked every detail down to the millimeter for imperfection in the mirror. First impressions could make or break him, after all.

So why then was he running slender fingers over his uniform, coaxing away what he thought were little stubborn peaks in the fabric and quivering in his boots? He'd done everything he needed to do and more...

Oh, god, the turbolift doors were sliding open.

Well, this was it. No turning back. He'd come all the way now, and he wasn't about to turn tail and run. One hoof in front of the other. Slowly does it. Biting back jangling nerves and a squicky ball of nerves that'd lodged itself in his throat Streelan made his way out of the turbolift, onto the currently rather quiet bridge, large, round green eyes focusing on the redheaded human woman seated in the commanding officer's chair. One last cursory visual look over himself told him that he was as immaculate as he could possibly be.

Go time. Just do it - and make sure you don't mess this up. He told himself.

"Captain Crawford?" With two slender hands he presented the captain with the PADD containing his transfer orders. "I am midshipman Streelan, hereon transferring to your command, ma'am." The steadiness in which he delivered that statement in the end shocked even himself. Hopefully he'd made a good enough impression.

Please don't kill me. He thankfully did not add.
