State of the Site - October 2026
#1
So...it's been over a year since I last posted one of these updates. Whoops. I had intended to do them every two months, but life has a way of life-ing, and these little updates fell by the wayside. Hopefully things have now settled down enough that I can return to semi-regular updates.

So, what has transpired in the last 17 months?

Federation Space Wins Simming Prize

Last June, I was contacted by others in the TrekLit/RPG community regarding writing a little article about our 25 year history. I sadly neglected to actually write this article, or delegate it to anyone else, and that's on me - I'm used to FedSpace's historical "isolationist" leadership not wanting to advertise or discuss the site with other RPG groups, and getting past 20 years of that has proven...difficult.

Despite this lack of communication, I was contacted AGAIN in February of this year to be informed that we had won the 2025 Simming Prize by The Simming League, in memory of Seth Cotis. The citation reads:

Quote:A forum-based club that recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, Federation Space does all the little things that allow a group to not just survive, but thrive long-term. With a useful wiki, helpful hosts, and inspiring leaders, players are able to weave storylines together into different ships, which then blend seamlessly into a cohesive storyline right at home within Trek canon.

The citation and other winners of the prize can be found here.

This award wouldn't be possible without you, the membership. From the newest Middy to the oldest and crustiest of the 20+ year veterans (and they know who they are), every member of this site contributes to the site in an irreplaceable way, and to the community that makes us (in my opinion) a great place to write!

Membership

Artemis: 11 Active (11 PRCs)
Aquila: 9 Active, 1 ELOA (10 PRCs)
Yeager: 7 Active (6 PRCs, 1 SRC)
Zephyr: 9 Active (7 PRCs, 2 SRCs)

Overall, we've increased our membership levels from May last year by four, with the major differences in staffing being in where those people are posting. At 34 active members, not including those on any type of extended leave, we're a lot smaller than we once were but we're still going strong!

As you can see, however, the Yeager is skirting that fine line of what the administration considers "viable". Site policy has been that seven is the minimum number to maintain a viable ship, and that's the policy Autumn and I have stuck with since taking over the full-time running of the site. While I would hate to shut down the Yeager as I enjoy running it as something a bit different to what you'd regularly see on a Star Trek show or RPG, I'm also not above my own rules - ultimately I can run a side-project like I've done in the past if it comes down to the site needing to further contract (some of you may remember my FedSpace 2266 idea from a few years back, for example.)

Current Openings
DH Openings:
Aquila: Chief Science Officer, Chief Medical Officer
Yeager: Chief Medical Officer
Zephyr: Chief Science Officer, Chief Engineer

Non-DH Openings:
Artemis: Security Officer
Yeager: Engineer, Science Officer ,Medical Officer, Engineer, Security Officer
Zephyr: Tactical Officer

Mission Authors and GMs

In short, I need some/more.

This site runs smoothly on the back of well-written mission outlines, and the efforts of dedicated and prepared GMs. As time has gone by and members of either left or taken on new responsibilities outside of the site, the number of GMs has dwindled, as has the number of missions being submitted for approval. I've been trying to keep things going, but there's four crews and only one of me (I am GMing three ships right now as part of a small multi-ship plot), and much as I hate to say it, my creativity wasn't what it once was, and it's showing in my GM posts and the pacing of said plots.

If people wish to investigate the possibility of becoming a GM or Mission Author, please reach out to me via the usual methods!

Closing

We're up a total of four over last May, and while we number only 34 active members, we have a solid core of dedicated players at the heart of this community. To fill our rosters, we need another 12 characters of either Primary or Secondary nature. If one person from every ship were to recruit one person, that would fill 1/3 of those gaps and leave us in a much happier place! If we can't recruit more members, however, I would be more than happy to have some fresh mission ideas and GMs coming in to spice things up a bit!
