Federal District, Saule City

Planet Riani

The away team arrived onto a bustling city block, populated by a steady stream of people who shuffled busily along a row of brick terraced buildings. A few members of the crowd stopped to gawk at the new arrivals, but none dared to approach them directly. As the senior staff had observed in their briefing, the locals were extremely eclectic in appearance, though virtually all of them had visible cyberware implanted on some part of their body. Most had grey or purple skin, and braids seemed to be a popular choice of hairstyle. Besides that, the Riani hardly seemed to be members of the same species at all.

A cold wind whipped through the corridor, biting at any exposed skin. Above the door to each building was mounted a flag which fluttered in distress, threatening to pull free of its hoist. Each bore the symbol of a minor regional power, most of whom were familiar to Starfleet. As the away team traced the location of the ambassador’s life sign, their eyes were drawn to a shabby looking building at the end of the block. The building’s frayed cerulean flag, which looked more worn than its neighbors, marked this as the Federation embassy.

The away team beamed into the bustling city block, people shuffling in a steady stream in both directions along a row of brick terraced buildings. It remind Brooks why he preferred the country life back home to the city.

Daniel noticed the cyberware implants and it made him have a slight shiver, other than that they seemed the usual population apart from being either grey or purple skinned with a trend in braids seeming to be the hairstyle.

There seemed to be a cold wind blowing along the corridor with the force of it noticable on the flags on the buildings above their heads..

It was interesting looking at the symbols of all the different minor regional powers having a present in the area over each of the buildings. As they moved towards the location of the Ambassador some of the locals stopped and starred at them but it was nothing to worry about as far as Daniel was concerned.

They were drawn to a shabby looking building at the end of the block by the tricorder pinging the Ambassadors life sign. The buildings flag was frayed and in general looked like it could do with a bit of work needed to be done and sadly it turned out to be the Federation embassy.

"At least the building stands out." commented Brooks as they walked over to the door of the building.

"Let's hope it might be a little bit better inside."

As the away team stepped over the threshold into the Federation embassy, they were greeted by a sparsely decorated lobby, about the size of a small apartment. Nobody was present at the receptionist desk along the back wall. The crew heard the creak of a wooden door, followed by a couple of echoing footsteps from a narrow staircase. Before long, they were face to face with Ambassador Weisbrantz.

“Welcome to Riani!” Jonas said, a practiced smile on his face. He shook hands with each member of the team, shooting a weary glance over the crew’s shoulder, toward the street outside. “Please, come upstairs and make yourselves at home.”

The ambassador’s office was more decorated than the lobby below, though it was a bit too small for comfort. A stuffy warmth began to accumulate as the away team filed in. Three mismatched chairs sat on either side of a stately wooden desk. Dim light filtered through a grimy window. The ambassador had accumulated many photos, which were displayed on every wall.

“I apologize for calling you all the way out here with very few details, captain. Riani may be along the Federation’s border, but it’s a long way from the culture you’re used to. I’ve seen some encouraging signs in the past couple of years, but it’s fragile. Frankly, I think the Federation tends to forget how progress is made in developing cultures.”

The ambassador’s smile tensed, deepening the creases around his eyes. Then, his expression grew serious. His eyes still darted around the room, seemingly searching for something.

“In fact, the Federation saw fit to change our approach to Riani. They sent a new ambassador to replace me: Miss Saida Gebrezghi. The problem is that she was meant to check in earlier this week, and nobody has heard from her.”

Lt Thorn felt the eyes on her. They stood out and the locals were a bit wary. Observing the architecture, Kalli followed the others as they moved. She was expecting a bit more formality. This was certainly no red carpet treatment, but she had seen worse. At least this level of dust and dirt was tolerable and even to be expected in such a place.

Keeping here eyes sharp, she kept her hands visible, in hopes that she wouldn't make the people any more nervous about them than they already were. She took note of the devices she saw, or didn't see and was privately evaluating the place and what they had to work with. Listening to the Ambassador, she wondered what the new approach was, but felt it wasn't her place to speak up about such things.

As the away team entered the building Shione drew her tricorder out and scanned for nearby lifeforms, She listened to what the Ambassador had to say and while she was focused on that, Shione sidestepped and whispered quietly to Alex.

"I am curious ir the locals are spying on him and or us; can you do a subtle scan before the CO makes any statements that we do not want strangers hearing?"

In addition to her scans Shione also allowed herself a brief empathic scan of the Ambassador and if any others are she will briefly include them. Not sure what she wlould find she tapped her hip confirming the presence of her phaser.

Alex was a bit annoyed that they had not been warned about any inclement weather, but he had endured worse. He glanced around and took in the landing zone. The place was nothing much of a tourist attraction, but he imagined that the people who called it home liked it.

There was an occasional bit of dirt or a small stone that crunched under his feet, as they headed to what appeared to be their destination. When they entered the building, he was at least glad to be out of the wind. Kurasa was busy with her tricorder and at her request, he casually touched the device on his left forearm and then gave a good look around the embassy, allowing it to scan the entire area. He then had the data transfer to his PADD. Holding it up, he looked it over to see if his tricorder had detected any sensors or devices transmitting within range. Obviously, their comm badges would be detected, but he had no idea what else he might detect. Given they were a technologically advanced people, he expected there to at least be environmental sensors, safety devices and the likes, but he could easily identify those.

Dan was a little bit surprised by the state of their embassy building, which clearly could do with some investment.

"I don't believe there is a handbook on it yet Ambassador so I am inclined to agree with your assessment." replied Brooks as the ambassador’s smile tensed, deepening the creases around his eyes.

Captain Brooks listened and couldn't help thinking that this was very odd and why no one on the other end of the change of Ambassadors had flag up they were missing.

"I'm sure my Chief of Security could make some discreet enquiries into your replacements whereabouts, if that is alright with you Ambassador? May I also ask why the Federation decided to change the approach with this world? As you have said there is many factors and it can be fragile." said Brooks looking at the Ambassador with his icy blue eyes.

Shione nodded to the Captain's mention of the name of the Ambassador's successor and concern over her whereabouts.

"I will check into it Captain."

"Kurasa to Aquila, The replacement ambassador has gone missing Perhaps you could scan to see if you could locate someone of her species?
And if they are scanning you, perhaps raise shields? Your call Commander, Kurasa over."

== For Kurasa ==

The ambassador’s emotions were a tightly coiled ball. Despite his augmentations, his emotional state was clearly human. Fear and desprration were certainly present in abundance, though they were well contained. Kurasa also felt a sense of relief or hope, like a drowning man whose hand had just closed around something sturdy.

== For Talion ==

Talion’s scan would reveal the location of three camouflaged sensors, about the size of a fingernail, placed in discreet positions around the office, with one even being built into the ceiling. They were a relatively sophisticated design, and appeared to be capable of transmitting secure audio and video data to a remote location elsewhere within the same city.

The sensors could be disabled or tampered with easily now that Talion knew their location, though it would take additional effort to do so without attracting the attention of whoever was on the other end.

“The Federation Diplomatic Corps, in its wisdom, appears to think that living on Riani for ten years has made me into something of a native. They still see corruption, society dancing on the edge of war. They’re concerned that this planet has changed me more than I’ve changed it.” He gestured at the implants on the side of his head, as if to illustrate his point.

“I’ve pulled every string available to me to handle this situation quietly. The relationship between our governments is fragile enough as it is. It won’t withstand a scandal like this. Again, I apologize for bringing you into this mess rather blind.”

Ambassador Weisbrantz shifted slightly, looking like he wanted to say more, before he seemed to decide against.

Before the Ambassador could say anymore Velaul's voice came over the commbadges,

[Aquila to Away Team we are attracting a lot of attention up here, all eyes on the planet are on us right now. It appears they want to know us better, or what we are made of.]

Brooks tapped his commbadge, "Brooks to Aquila, just keep everything calm up there. Be as diplomatic as you can be. Brooks out."

He closed the channel and said "Sorry Ambassador, do go on."

“The Federation Diplomatic Corps, in its wisdom, appears to think that living on Riani for ten years has made me into something of a native. Captain Brooks looked at the Ambassador for a moment,

"Don't worry Ambassador, we wouldn't have been sent to assist if the Federation had given up on you. Problem with people sitting behind the desk thousand miles away means they don't actually see what is going on in real time. They only follow reports and the problem with that is when a situation like this as you say is fragile you can't say what you really need to otherwise it could cause a whole new set of problems."

Looking at both Kurasa and Talion he said,

"I am sure we will be able to find your replacement and then we can move on from there."

Dan knew the Ambassador was wanting to tell him more but clearly there was a reason for him holding back some information.

"If there is anything else you like us to do while we are visiting Ambassador let us know, we do have a gift to bring you from the Federation as a mark of respect of your ten years here. I thought you might like to come back to Aquila and have a little bit of a party to celebrate. I will also get one my officers show you around. She is a Ross class vessel and pretty well equipped for all kinds of scenarios."

Talion felt the emotional state of the Ambassador, reading the thoughts and feelings coming from him. They were quite understandable, given what they knew so far about his situation. The problem was that they didn't know enough of the finer details of that situation. He read the tricorder data from his device and glanced around the room. The devices were well hidden and were likely intended more to observe him than for him to observe others. Alex took a moment to transfer the scan data to his PADD and held it out for Kurasa to see, but at an angle that kept the information from the view of the sensors before clearing the screen and turning his attention to the conversation with the Ambassador.

Talion sent a text message to Khasim, [Continue scanning the planet for another human life sign. Until we have coordinates to start from, use us as a focal point and work in a spiral search pattern working outward. You might also scan for residual Federation warp signatures and indications from our impulse engines in the system. A ship should have arrived, but we need to confirm when and where. We also don't know where it went. It may even still be in the system.]

Remaining calm, he offered to the Ambassador, as well as the Captain, "Although I also suggest the ship as a place for you to be able to refresh yourself and give us a proper debriefing, if you feel that might send the wrong message to the people here," he glanced around the room again, "then perhaps we might seek out a place you feel is more appropriate for such a conversation."

He deliberately then gave a look to the Captain that reflected concern as he reached up and briefly scratched once right below his ear, trying to indicate that they were being monitored. He then offered, "Although, a visit to the ship would also allow us a moment to let medical give him an official scan, so that it might put the Federation more at ease about his assignment here while we assist in the situation. The Ambassador has worked long and hard at this assignment and it would seem a shame to let all of that time and effort be overlooked and for someone to start over without at least a good handoff to the next person to take up his noble task. The decade of trust and rapport that he has established is a very important element in a diplomatic process like this."

With a professional smile, he then turned to the Ambassador, "What the Captain said about our ship is true. Perhaps you might at least enjoy a good meal while you help us to understand how we can best help you, Ambassador. You certainly have earned a small taste of home before we get down to the business of how to best be of service to you here. We will most certainly help you to resolve the questions about the replacement they sent."

Talion was trying hard to put his best diplomatic foot forward. The Ambassador would certainly pick up on the efforts that he and the Captain were making to try and get him back to the ship, so they could talk more freely. He wasn't lying, as they were here to help him the best they could. The problem was that they needed him to be able to brief them on the situation and fill in the blanks about the other Ambassador. Without an overt effort that would be detected, he wasn't sure they could establish a secure setting on the planet to do that. He was confident he could jam the signals and even perhaps completely disable the devices, but that would risk sending the wrong kind of message to the people of the planet that, in their paranoid state of mind, might set them off. You had to sometimes be careful with such people, as they were very self-conscious about their relative inferiorities. The fact that there was an active power struggle in place on the planet only served as a blatant example of a need for such caution.

While the others were talking, Kalli was more interested in the Ambassador himself. She was specifically wanting to find out about what sort of implants he had acquired in his stay on the planet. The engineer silently pulled out her tricorder and did a narrow beam scan on the man. She recorded the detailed readings and tried to determine the specific types of technology they were using in their work. She wasn't the expert that Talion was on the subject, but he had taught her a great deal, as part of the drone program that she had become very involved in. She had wanted to understand the various types of interfaces and such and Talion had compared it to the technology they had encountered with the Borg. Kalli hoped that the man hadn't altered himself too much along the way, but she felt that they needed to find out.

The metallic gold bands that ran along either side of the ambassador’s head were the most obvious modifications. This sophisticated piece of machinery seemed to supplement the brain’s recall capacity through a complex interaction with the hippocampus.

Thorn’s tricorder revealed other minor modifications as well, characteristic of a man who had spent a decade in a society that primarily employed cybernetic medicine. For example, a tendon in the ambassador’s left wrist was synthetic in nature.

The ambassador’s eyes softened as the captain extended an offer to join the crew aboard the ship.

“Perhaps another time, Captain. If I leave Riani now, I may not come back. There’s a lot of resistance toward off-worlders, especially among Tanndi’s organized crime families. If word gets out that the Federation has left the planet’s surface, they may push to close the borders once and for all. President Khushku has been able to keep things civil up to this point, but her position is more tenuous than ever.

“Still, your science officer makes an excellent point, I think we should continue this discussion over a meal. There’s a wonderful restaurant less than a kilometer from here. Only a few Federation citizens have had the opportunity to sample Riani cuisine.”

Jonas made toward the door of the shabby office, subtly scratching below his ear as he passed Talion, as if to signal that he knew somewhere they would not be heard.

At the mention of a planned outing on this planet with all of it's technical savvy and complexity was NOT something that the Aquila's Security Chief was keen on and catching the eyes of both the Captain but also Alex both would see Shione's reluctance.

But if it was going to happen she needed to be ready. Stepping slightly apart from the others she tapped her comm badge and spoke in what would clearly some off as someone who was trying to speak discretely.

"Kurasa to Bridge. The Ambassador has suggested that we leave here and go to a local restaurant. Given the technical complexity and preponderance of surveillance I want a transporter lock on all of the away team including the Ambassador and if I should use Commander Velaul's first name in a contact with the ship, please transport us all , Kurasa over."

She returned to the Captain's side and spoke quietly. "The bridge is aware that we might be going out and I have initiated a rescue protocol should this go badly."

Shione had been involved in way too many dangerous away team situations to not have something ready should this all go south on them.

Talion spoke up from the group,

Daniel nodded in agreement, "Yes, I did mention to your friendly neighbors we might take a chance at some shore leave... lets go for a meal to celebrate your ten years here Ambassador."

As the Ambassador lead the way out the office Commander Kurasa came alongside him and said quietly,

"The bridge is aware that we might be going out and I have initiated a rescue protocol should this go badly."

Dan replied just as quietly,

"I certainly hope it won't come to that but it's good to know back up is available."

With the captain’s agreement, the ambassador nodded and squeezed past the away team, leading them out of the cramped office and onto the street where a gust of cold wind greeted them. He moved with purpose, occasionally glancing over his shoulder to ensure that the away team remained in tow. At the end of the second block from the embassy, he turned sharply into an alley.

This street was noticeably grimier and more dilapidated than the area where the team had materialized. A handful of shops lined either side of the narrow corridor, including a clinic that advertised affordable cyberware. The door’s power system was malfunctioning, causing it to twitch in a slightly ajar position. Passersby in this area were more brazen in their gawking at the group. Some openly sneered and whispered to each other as they passed.

“Stay close, not too much further now,” the Ambassador muttered. His tone was relaxed. Empaths among the group could detect that he was not imminently worried for their safety or his own.

After a tense walk, the group arrived at their destination. The restaurant entrance was marked by a fabric divider, reminiscent of a Japanese noren. On either side of the entrance stood a golden statue depicting some kind of bovine animal with a ridged horn. An odd (yet not altogether unappetizing) aroma wafted from the building.

Inside, the restaurant was abuzz with the din of patrons. The lights were a dim scarlet color, which glinted against the ornate decor. A violet-skinned Riani greeted them from behind a counter. The host's sleeves were rolled up to the elbow, showing off a pair of silver-colored implants running along each arm.

“Mister Weisbrantz, it’s so wonderful to see you again,” The host crooned. “Will your friends be joining us tonight?”

“Glad you’re feeling better, Yully. We’ll take the usual room, if you don’t mind,” Weisbrantz replied.

The host nodded, shooting a curious glance at the group before leading them into a private dining room at the back of the restaurant. A waiter brought glasses for each member of the party, then set down a bottle of strong-smelling clear liquor on the table and slid the door shut behind him as he left.

“Now we should be able to speak openly,” Weisbrantz said, sliding into a seat. He left the head of the table open for the captain to sit down.

“Let’s get to the point: our first priority is to find Saida Gebrezghi. I believe that she’s somewhere on Riani, possibly even here in Tanndi. I can’t prove it, but my contacts in the government are spooked. Nobody will meet with me, and there are rumors that something was shot down a couple of days ago." Jonas ran his hands through his red hair, looking tired.

“Concealing life signs is easy, but you can start by looking for the shuttle. It’ll be picked clean by now, but there could be some evidence left behind. Still, even if you find the shuttle, you’ll need to be careful. You’ve seen how overzealous the military can be.

"Please, if you have any questions for me, I’ll do my best to answer honestly.” The ambassador looked at the crew expectantly, taking a long sip from his glass.

Doing her best to simply listen and observe, Thorn scanned discretely as she walked. These people might have developed technology, but they felt like one big black market. There was no cultural pride anywhere. Everywhere she looked she saw signs of desperation and struggle. There was more than just the dirt and dust to the place. You didn't have to be a Betazoid to pick up on the deep distrust in the air.

Lt Thorn gave a confused look, "What would they be spooked about? What possible reason would they have for shooting down the shuttle of an incoming diplomat from the Federation? I don't understand how that could possibly be viewed as a good idea."

Talion noticed the change in the feelings coming from their host. For all of the less savory elements to their surroundings, this man seemed to feel more comfortable here than his office. Still, Talion didn't want to presume anything. He casually reached under his sleeve and pressed a small button on his device again, scanning the establishment as they walked through and into the private room. He was looking for more evidence of monitoring devices.

After listening to the Ambassador, Talion finally asked, "Why would some of the people not want the Federation here? I would think that they were eager for the technology they would have access to. What are they afraid of?"

Throughout the journey to the restaurant; which was something that Shione had wanted to prevent; she kept a tight focus on their surroundings as well as her own thoughts.

Their destination did nothing to assuage the COS's  concerns but the Captain seemed determined so she kept her focus on her tricorder as they entered looking to find any sign of surveillance , and did a sweep of the room before giving Talion a look. Employing the telepathic bond the two shared she passed on a brief message
~We cannot be sure what they are capable of The shuttle has been shot down, but no body. I would prefer that they cannot 'hear' us.~

Walking past Kalli she whispered, "We need to be expecting trouble, give us as much warning as you can."

She approached the Captain and the Ambassador, giving Brooks a look that would communicate to the CO that all things were not so rosy.

"I am afraid that I have some bad news, and she showed the brutal image of the downed shuttle which she had loaded to her padd, to both men, adding: "There was no sign of a body yet we can be sure that someone has her. I understand your reasoning as to why you wish to remain, however as Security Chief it is my judgement that remaining here risks you both."

She paused before addressing the Ambassador, "Sir, with respect why is risking your life worth maintaining contact here? I am not unaware of the possible benefits, but in my professional estimate it may be outweighed by the risk to us and our technology."

While speaking Shione kept a tight focus on all that was around them, paranoia perhaps, but that did not preclude an actual threat.

No monitoring devices were detected. In fact, the private room was actually insulated by a low grade jamming signal. Starfleet communicators were powerful enough to break through, but comparatively weak cybernetic implants were not.

Weisbrantz sighed in agreement with Thorn’s question. “I can only guess why. Things on Riani are tense: nations are on the brink of war. Maybe it was an accident, or perhaps a rogue actor took it upon themselves to break this alliance before it begins. I have faith that President Khushku would not order this, but she may be in an impossible situation if she finds out that it happened under her nose.”

The ambassador turned to Talion next. “It’s true that many Riani are fascinated by Federation technology, the crime families have a pretty good thing going. They’ve made it their mission to fight anything that looks like a threat to their business.”

Finally, he looked at the image that Kurasa presented. From the surface, his face seemed only to go a bit pale, though the empaths would feel the deep pit of dread that had opened up in his chest.

“How unfortunate, though it confirms what I already feared. Is your team able to find a way down to the surface to investigate? We need to move as quickly as possible.”

His eyes softened as he addressed Kurasa directly. “Commander, I understand that I’ve brought you into a mess. I’ve begun to think of Riani as my home, and I won’t leave while I still have hope for it. I believe we can solve this problem without any blood spilled.”

== Apologies, slight correction to the previous post. Weisbrantz's dialog should read:

"While it’s true that many Riani are fascinated by Federation technology, the crime families have a pretty good thing going. They’ve made it their mission to fight anything that looks like a threat to their business.”

Meaning that Federation technology would be valuable to the Riani people, but would also presents a threat to the current power structure of the planet. Please DM if you need additional clarification on anything ==

"Why would some of the people not want the Federation here? I would think that they were eager for the technology they would have access to. What are they afraid of?" asked Commander Talion while Brooks was thinking on what the Ambassador had said.

Kurasa paused before addressing the Ambassador, "Sir, with respect why is risking your life worth maintaining contact here? I am not unaware of the possible benefits, but in my professional estimate it may be outweighed by the risk to us and our technology."

Captain Brooks listened to everything his icy blue eyes checking out the Ambassadors reactions to what was being said,

"From what I can gather if the Ambassador leaves here then chances are the Federation won't have the contact they need, there is several possibilities that who ever has the incoming Ambassador could be using them or forcing them to conform into helping them maybe."

He paused for a moment,

"I am sure the Aquila will be able to scan the surface and find any trace elements of the shuttle, as Kurasa has said we need to make sure you are safe while we are here. We do not want to risk you in this fragile element of this world. I would suggest you take a small security detail from the Commanders team while we investigate this shall we say problem?"

Noting that they appeared to be in a secure room that was employing a mild jamming technology, she turned her tricorder for Talion to see and said, "I think we're relatively clear to speak freely here."

Lt Thorn examined the shuttle data more closely. Then, she silently zoomed out, verifying the coordinates before stating to Kurasa, "I can't help but look at the isolated area this went down in and think that this shuttle might have been deliberately brought down there. If so, that might be a good sign, as they may have intended to capture the pilot and not killed them. It's much easier to destroy a target than to use measured force to bring it down intact."

Talion gave Thorn a nod and agreed, "I concur."

He then listened to the Ambassador and the Captain before speaking in a softer tone, "Suppose that the safety of your family here is also a priority for you, which is only understandable. Naturally, we're concerned about the diplomatic mission here, but that includes ALL Federation citizens. We are dedicated to all aspects of the mission. We're here to help."

He then turned to Brooks, gave a small sigh and a grin that indicated this was not exactly new territory for either of them and said, "So, Captain...your orders?"

Jonas nodded appreciatively at the captain’s offer. “Yes, perhaps some extra security would be wise. If you could spare one of your officers for the night, I’m sure my family would sleep much more comfortably. Our apartment has a security system, but some of the most dangerous criminals are also skilled hackers.”

He watched intently as the crew continued to discuss. He looked down at his glass as Talion mentioned that the crew’s duty was to all Federation citizens rather than strictly the diplomatic mission at hand.

“I take your point, Commander,” he said, tugging at his sleeve. “Still, not only do I believe in Riani, I also believe that what happens here matters. The Federation may not see it now, but this region of space will look very different in ten years if Riani makes close allies with the Cardassians rather than with us. They’re limited by the quality of the native dilithium, along with their suspicion of other nations and planets, but some of their technology is beyond anything else in the quadrant.”

The ambassador flushed. He hadn’t meant to deliver such an impassioned speech. As he regained his composure, the door to the room slid open and the waiter whispered something in his ear.

“If you’ll excuse me a moment, it seems someone is trying to reach me. I guess I’m not fully ostracized just yet. Please help yourself to a drink if you’d like. It’s strong, but the flavor is surprisingly smooth.”

Jonas excused himself for a moment, allowing the crew to talk amongst themselves. When he returned, he seemed almost out of breath.

“It seems you’ve made quite an impression, Captain. One of my contacts would like to speak with your crew tonight if you can meet him. He may have information on Saida Gebrezghi’s whereabouts. This padd will get you in. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to be careful.”

Jonas slid the device across the table toward the Aquila crew. The screen depicted an impressive skyscraper hotel in Saule’s commercial district, about 3 kilometers from the team’s present position.

Shione listened with interest to what the Ambassador was saying and was also mindful of Kalli's hypothesis regarding why the shuttle was brought down there; and none of it looked good from a security perspective. Whispering for Talion and Kalli's benefit she added; "I agree it does not pass the smell test."

As the Ambassador pointed out the possible benefits she was also hearing what Samira had mentioned about there being tire tracks, and paused for a moment to gather her thoughts before addressing all the Crew present plus the Ambassador and spoke quietly.

"The tire tracks suggest to me that the shuttle was deliberately brought down there, so that person’s unknown could capture the Ambassador and to be frank it all kinda 'smells' like a trap to me. and if that IS true then we would be risking far more than losing contact with the Riani.

We have 3 senior officers plus the Captain of a Federation starship here on planet and while I do agree with the Ambassador that it IS a viable possibility that this invite is legitimate and safe, it could simply be a part of a larger picture to hold us hostage in order to get what they truly want ;which is, I believe would be our technology."

She paused and the turned to the Captain. "It IS your call Captain but this does feel like it could be dangerous and as your Security Chief I am advising that in the least that you not attend Sir. Clearly the decision is yours, but I would be neglecting my duty if I did not warn you of just HOW dangerous this idea is."

Shione drew a deep breath and added; "However Sir if you do choose to go there the I would suggest that we beam there, but only after we obtain some transporter enhancement to be more certain that we would not end up as their prisoners.

And Ambassador just exactly who is this contact and what can you tell us that might ensure us, of the safety of this team and our Captain? With respect Ambassador I want to know everything you know about this contact including what you know about HIS loyalties and your level of trust in him, Sir."

The Captain would see that Shione was not at all keen about this but was prepared at least for the worst.

Brooks was thinking over the Ambassadors words after he exited and his body language as to what was going on. It wasn't long before the Ambassador returned seeming like he was almost out of breath.

Daniel icy blue eyes looked carefully at the Ambassador, "That is surprising considering we haven't done that much apart from arrive." he said looking over at Kurasa who then asked a few questions before recommending that he should probably return to the ship if any further investigation should be done.

As she did so Kurasa showed Brooks what was on the PADD which made for interesting reading, lucky enough Dan remained poker face due to his experience being a medical officer in not giving away anything to a patient when they were in deep trouble or when he was in the casino playing blackjack.

Captain Brooks looked at the Ambassador as he said,

"Commander Kurasa, I quite agree with your assessment it could quite easy be a trap where the shuttles been brought down. I would suggest you return to the Aquila and formulate a plan on how to attempt a rescue before we go jumping in."

Brooks eyes looked closely into the Ambassadors.

"As for the information may I suggest they speak to Commander Kurasa as she will be leading up the investigation into the whereabouts of the missing Ambassador."

Looking at Kurasa he said, "Bring down extra security to assist you."

Turing to the Ambassador he said,

"I will need to return to the ship and assess things from there, I may in the meantime send my First Officer down. Until then Commander Kurasa will be in charge of this part."

Looking at Talion and Thorn he said,

"Commander Talion will assist the security team, Lieutenant Thorn, return with me."

Looking back at the Ambassador he said,

"With all things considered with your family and how worried you are at stepping off this planet I would say step up security with more then just one of our officers as it probably won't be enough. This seems more fragile then I first expected."

Captain Brooks tap his commbadge and said,

"Aquila, beam myself and Lieutenant Thorn up."

Jonas shrunk slightly as Kurasa questioned him about his contact.

“We’ve never met in person,” he admitted. “I know that they hold a high position in government, and their vision for Riani aligns with the Federation’s ideals. They’ve been working to get someone like President Khushku into office since before we made first contact. I haven’t heard from them since the election, but I’m sure it’s not a coincidence that they’ve chosen this moment to resurface.”

As Brooks outlined the plan, Jonas finished his glass of the strong-smelling liquor. Seeing that none of the crew had helped themselves, he poured a second and downed it in a swift gulp.

“On this matter, I’ll defer to your judgment, Captain. You should be able to use the credentials on that padd to establish a secure transport link with the hotel. It may take some more creativity to reach the crash site undetected and begin your search for Ambassador Gebrezghi, but keep in mind that the Riani are significantly behind the Federation when it comes to starships. I’m sure you have some tricks they won’t have thought of.”

With that, the ambassador stood in front of the door to the restaurant’s dining area. He regarded each member of the away team solemnly.

“I should be getting home to my family. Thank you all, sincerely, for your help. Commander Talion, my apartment is not far from the embassy if you’d like to walk. I’m afraid it will be a bit cramped with multiple guests, but we will make room.”

As the CO stood and began to move to a better position for beaming out, Thorn also stood, but leaned toward Talion and said in a fairly hushed tone, "Do you need anything, before I leave?"

He understood what she meant, but had to admit that he was a little surprised that she thought to ask. Thorn never offered to part with her karambit, not for anyone. Her asking was a testament to how close they had grown over the years. A respectful and almost fatherly smile came over his face as he replied in the same tone, "I think I'll be fine."

Thorn gave a single nod in return, "Very well, Commander. You know how to reach me if you need anything."

She then moved to stand next to the CO. Seconds later, they vanished in the shimmer of a transporter beam.

Stepping aside she tapped her comm badge

"Commander Kurasa to the bridge. Given the nature of the situation, I would like to request additional security personnel namely; Ensign Mala and Security NCO Taylor Reese to beam down to my location as soon as it is convenient. And should Commander Velaul wish to accompany them. I would request that all arrive with Phasers. We are looking at a potentially troubling trip to meet a senior government official and we could face unknown potential threats, Kurasa over."

As Kurasa was talking to the ship, Talion tried to evaluate Jonas a little more closely. It was rare that he employed his Betazoid abilities, but considered this to be a worthy exception. He had been feeling out the situation rather passively since they beamed down, but now that they were about to move to a different location, he was looking for the non-verbal indications, as well as any unguarded thoughts he might be having. Talion was worried about if this was any kind of a setup or not.

Jonas was currently suspect in the eyes of the Federation. Talion and the crew were duty bound to question his motives and be aware of what was actually going on. They would need to act on behalf of the Federation and to protect as many of those involved as possible (perhaps from themselves), but with priority on members of the Federation.

Talion tapped a couple of buttons and sent the image of the location they would be heading to. The image was sent to his own computer system on the ship, as well as the ship itself, specifically to Science. He knew that the ship's sensors were monitoring them and trying to maintain a lock. He added a simple text that said they were heading to a new location to meet with a contact.

Jonas was overwhelmed by exhaustion, somewhat muting the lingering feelings of fear and desperation that he had displayed throughout the evening. Talion did not pick up any sign that Jonas was intentionally deceiving the crew. His unguarded thoughts were worried about his family’s future.

Jonas cleared his throat. “As I understand it, a security detail will accompany me home? For those of you who are beaming to the hotel, best of luck. The good options available for the Aquila team to come away from this mission with both Ambassadors alive and with as little of the Federation's technology falling into the hands of the Tanndi were becoming slim at best, but no one ever said the job was going to be easy.

"Good to see you Commander, just give me a moment;" She turned to Alex standing beside her, and spoke  quietly; "Are we being listened to Commander?"

Knowing that Talion would do all that he could was good enough for Shione and she resumed talking but addressed the two Security officer travelling with the FO first ."Jez I want you to contact the ship and have them beam down enough transport enhancers for the entire team, and Taylor I want you over at the door watching and listening in case we have snoops."

With those things taken care of Shione began to explain to all present. "In short form the Tanndi along with the other factions are highly competitive and seem capable of doing almost anything to gain any advantage at all in relation to their competitors. The Ambassador's ship falling into their territory and the tech they have likely taken from the ship is likely something that they planned for. The Ambassador here has explained enough for us to believe that we are ourselves a potential resource as well. We do not know where Saida Gebrezghi is, nor do we know their medical status, but we have been given an invitation to a meeting with someone that our ambassador here believes is a solid source of information, and we have the cooperation of one of his contacts"

Shione held up a Paad and continued "This holds the coordinates of the meeting with this contact is, but I feel we should perhaps do a site to site transport to take us to the Ambassador's quarters first and perhaps Commander you could arrange for a couple of my Security to protect him and his family while we go to the meeting?

Your thoughts Commander?"

Alex replied to Shione, "This room is fairly protected from the local sensors. We should be good for now though."

Once she had briefed the FO, he added, "A transporter signal will be detected. The enhancers will only help us get away, if they try to jam our ship's sensors from beaming us back out of an area. From what I can see, we're cleared to transport within the area, but the remains of the huttle are the only thing outside the allowed area so far."

Commander Tallion then said something that caused Jez to title her head slightly, Jez had to smile when Commander Kurasa said, "Jez I want you to contact the ship and have them beam down enough transport enhancers for the entire team, and Taylor I want you over at the door watching and listening in case we have snoops."  As she planned ahead and brought along a half dozen or so Transport Enhancers, as a just in case. “ Commander Kurasa, I already grabbed a half dozen or so transporter Enhancers  before beaming down.” Announced Jez as she patted her Away Team Backpack. “Oh, Commander I also ordered Crewman Slad keep a transporter lock on all of us, just to be safe.”

Jez could help but look when Commander Tallion spoke to Commander Kurasa, Alex replied to Shione, "This room is fairly protected from the local sensors. We should be good for now though."  Commander Tallion then said something that caught Jez’ ear, "A transporter signal will be detected. The enhancers will only help us get away, if they try to jam our ship's sensors from beaming us back out of an area. From what I can see, we're cleared to transport within the area, but the remains of the shuttle are the only thing outside the allowed area so far."

Jez smiled as she looked at Commander Tallion and tilted her chin as if to say, “ Hello Commander it’s been a while since we last spoke.” There was something familiar in what the Commander had said about the local sensors. Then it hit her.

The Bajorans….!!!

“Excuse me Commander Tallion, I recall reading  back in the Academy  how the Bajoran Resistance fighter used tricorders to jam Cardassian sensors, couldn't we program a tricorder to emit a scattering field to hide us from or at least confuse the local sensors?” Suggested Jez.

Alex grinned at Jez, "Indeed, Lieutenant Mala. In fact, given our technology, it would take little effort to jam the local sensors, but that in itself could be a problem. We suspect that a number of people are very interested in where we are and what we are doing. Thus, if there is suddenly a significant sensor disruption in our area, it is going to be almost like a beacon. It night come in handy, should we need to escape from anyone wishing us harm, but otherwise it will certainly raise suspicion from any local agencies paying attention. You're right to come prepared, but we need to try and be smart about what we do, as well as what we do not do. Good thinking about the tricorder signal though. If it requires it, I am prepared to jam signals and even local communications, but I will try to keep it to a minimum range if that happens. If we make too much of a show of force, it will certainly not help our diplomatic efforts in this mission. Until forced to do otherwise, I suggest a soft hand with these people."

Beno was listening closely to what was being said by both Commanders, and it was great information. The evidence they could gather on the ship would support her theory, one government competing to get a look at their ship. One effort to thwart the other, all while providing extra security to the ship from the other.

"Thank you for the information, I have a feeling that I know who we are about to meet." Beno paused for a second. This was a unique situation that she never thought was possible. Beno even thought about taking the Ambassador home, it might give them a few more answers.

"This is a unique situation that is going to require an equal solution." She tapped her com badge. "Now." Shortly after a small luggage rack appeared with clothes appeared. "I have arranged for appropriate business attire, I think if we are going to be seen in civilian clothing than Military, the jackets will conceal the fact we have phasers. Everyone knows we have them, but they don't need to flash them around. Ladies with me to the washroom to change."

Beno went to the rack and grabbed the suit with her name on it, the others had the tags for the team members. All of them would fit the crew nicely, and they would have the appropriate look for a board room. "Mala and Kurasa you are with me in the washroom to change, guys are next."

Beno went to the Washroom waiting on the other ladies to arrive, and she started to change. The clothes were hugging her curves, but not too tightly. "Kurasa I know this isn't exactly going to make you the most comfortable, and I am also expecting some resistance from Talion as well. Right now I just need you to go along with this, the Civilian clothes will go a longer way to broker a peaceful solution than our Military. We are not about to misrepresent who we are, just softening the message that we carry." The skirt that Beno wore went below the knee slightly, and when she did up the sandal style high heel the strap was behind the ankle.

"I know you have some concerns that need to be brought up, and now is the time to do it. Once we leave this bathroom the window is closed." Kurasa would know everything else that Beno would say after, and counted on her to follow orders.

Feeling that time was important, Talion took advantage of the fact that they ladies were already in another room. He simply grabbed his outfit and began to change. He was quick and efficient. He had almost completely finished by the time they came out. His build was not what one would expect from a scientist. His muscular body fit well enough into the civilian clothing, but that was mostly because it was specifically designed for him by the computer.

Alex took the time to be sure that his Arm PADD was concealed under his sleeve and then activated the holographic cover for it as well. His phaser and other PADD were tucked away. He had a small light that he put into a pocket, along with a small multi-tool, but hadn't felt the need for anything more significant yet. Kalli had offered to leave him her Kerambit, but he hoped it might not come to that sort of thing. He was capable enough, but had a rather strong dislike of violence in general.

Following orders as he heard them, Taylor was happy to be a part of this team.  Going down to the surface with the First Officer and Security Chief was thrilling, whom didn't waste much time with small talk. Her orders came swiftly to keep an open ear and eye, the idea was to keep an eye out for trouble not draw attention to themselves.

Soon after a trolly of clothes appeared with Civilian attire, in there was no doubt a suit meant for him. Right now as it was the women were getting changed first, leaving him to do his job. The key ingredient to doing it low key wax keep it casual, acting like a tourist Taylor was simply observing people not looking at anyone for more than a fraction of a second. Any time after that makes people uncomfortable, even suspicious of intent.

Jez loved Commander Tallion in that he reminded her of a School Teacher, but not in a mean way, but in a I love to challenge my students, kind of a way. She had to laugh to herself when Tallion Said, "Indeed, Lieutenant Mala. In fact, given our technology, it would take little effort to jam the local sensors, but that in itself could be a problem. We suspect that a number of people are very interested in where we are and what we are doing. Thus, if there is suddenly a significant sensor disruption in our area, it is going to be almost like a beacon. “Commander Tallion what you say is true, but what if we made it appear if the interference is natural, rocks can release energy, but not in a way that directly powers devices or is readily usable., but maybe the energy would be enough to confuse their sensors and give us a little privacy. “ Stated Jez , in a matter of fact, but in a respectful tone.

After Jez left Commander Tallion with a possible alternative she followed Commander Velaul and Kurasa to the rack, Clearly whoever on the Aquial selected the clothing was no slave to fashion, The clothes were simple nondescript. Jez grabbed a pair of pants, a light tan in color, and a simple blue tunic. She followed Commander Velaul and Kurasa into the washroom. She was a bit surprised by Commander Velaul’s selection. Jez turned to Commander Velaul and said, “Excuse me, Commander, but is a skirt practical, if we end up in a fight, or we have to travers rough terrain a skirt might slow you down, no?” Maybe function wasn’t as important in this case as it is to blend in with the locals, to not draw attention to themselves.

The only thing that Beno  old think of at this time was the talk, how it was going to go and who they were talking to. Mala on the other hand would have a valid concern about what she wore, there was one factor that she didn’t take into account.

“Those are good thoughts to consider, if things resort in a fire fight like that there is too much at risk. If we need to hike somewhere I am sure a change in clothing can be accommodated.” Chances were good they were not going on that hike, but she would have to be mindful over what was said. The only outcome that is acceptable was the return of their Ambassador, or it could lead to all out war.

“I would rather have these things sit on our hip, and not in our hands.” It was her number one policy when it came to weapons, she really didn’t want to hurt anyone.

Jez looked at Commander Velaul and considered what she said, but Jez was a bit uncertain about what was going on as she wasn’t in the MIssion briefing with the Captain. Was this a rescue mission, or retrieving  the shuttle, did the shuttle have some advanced piece of technology; what was the purpose of them being there?

Would the loss of one shuttle impact the Federation, or would it pose a threat to StarFleet? Why are we here?

“Forgive me Commander, but what exactly is our goal here?” Asked Jez her tone was inquisitive.

Now that Beno was fully dressed she was ready to go, just as soon as the others were. It was a rare treat for to allow her feminine side out, the Uniform wasn't that flattering. Mala also had one last question that had an easy answer

"We are here to find our missing Ambassador, hopefully alive." Beno didn't want to imagine what would happen if she wasn't, the worst case was war, best case only the people responsible are punished. The goal that Beno wanted was for all to walk away as friends, but the reality might be polar opposite.

Leaving the Bathroom she waited for the others to come out as well. She was a little shocked to see one of the men changed already, ordering the other to get changed as well. They didn't have much time, and Beno wanted to get 8t started  "Let's get the Ambassador home first, and then get to the transport sight right after that." Beno put her arm in the arm of Talion. "Care to be my escort?" She asked before she set everything in motion.

Jez was curious as she watched Commander Velaul offer her arm to Commander Talion, like a lady of the Victorian era on Earth. Jez wasn’t sure if they were to pair off, that might look a little suspicious if couples started appearing. Though it might make things appear more natural, happy couples shopping, walking around exploring their city.

Jez was a bit jealous that Commander Velaul had beaten her to Commander Tallion, Jez really liked Commander Tallion, he was handsome, kind and very intelligent There was Taylor Reese, Taylor was handsome, he was handsome, in a kind of boy next door kind of way. Taylor was what Jez imagined Commander Tallion was probably ten or fifteen years ago. Commander Tallion was worldly, a man of the Galaxy. Taylor was a average guy, Jez could picture Taylor in his off time running Holo Programs fighting Knights and Dragons, or Vikings., but then again  she could see him running classic theater like Shakespeare, Chekov, O’Neil or Williams

This would give you a chance to get to know Taylor better.

Jez walked over to Taylor and offered him her arm. ”Shall we.?” said Jez. with a smile on her face.

== For Reese ==

The away team was causing quite a stir among the restaurant’s patrons. They drew more suspicious stares each time the door to the private room slid open. Most were whispering among themselves, but none seemed to be an immediate threat.

== For all ==

“Very well, Commander. We’ll all go to my apartment together,” Jonas said. “Don’t worry, it’s not far.” He led the team outside, back into the cold night.

Jonas moved a bit more slowly than he had before, the events of the day seeming to weigh heavily on him. The streets were emptier, too. A tense calm settled over the group, like they were walking through a graveyard. White mist had settled on either side of the road. It swirled and dissipated as the team passed by.

“I was young when I was assigned to Riani,” Jonas said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I thought I would be here for a year or two before moving onto the next posting. Funny, I wonder what that Jonas would think if he could see me now.”

The ambassador took a sharp right, down a more residential block lined with apartment buildings. Most of the windows were dark, though a few silhouettes peered down from above. Jonas continued to walk in silence, seemingly deep in thought. Finally, he arrived at his destination. Jonas placed a palm on the security terminal and the door clicked open. He grasped the door handle, then froze.

From behind the group came a loud popping sound, accompanied by a flash of yellow light. Jonas fell to the ground in a heap, like a puppet with its strings cut. His eyes were unfocused, his mouth open in shock.

The others finished changing and then the FO surprised Alex by her almost casual approach, taking his arm and asking him to be her escort. He couldn't help but grin at that as he accepted her arm in his, "What gentleman could refuse such an offer?"

For just a brief moment, there was the pang of a memory. So many times, his wife had taken his arm in just such a way. It was an understandable reaction and he quickly forced it to the back of his mind. He would do his best to be present in the moment and remain focused on the mission at hand.

As they arrived at their current destination, Alex barely caught a glimpse of the hesitation by Jonas, but had no chance to react before the sound and flash of light. Talion's reactions finally kicked in and he moved to protect the FO as he gave a firm single word to all, "Down!" He had barely processed that the FO was not the target when he saw Jonas falling. Thinking nothing of his own fate, he stayed low and moved swiftly to Jonas. Alex moved fast for a big guy. When he reached Jonas, he instantly tried assessing his vitals and using his mind to detect the thoughts of the Ambassador, hoping he was only stunned or injured, but not fatally. His second thought, looking to the direction the shot had come from.

The investigation was an ongoing matter and as it proceeded Shione had asked for Security reinforcements to ensure the team had sufficient personnel however when they arrived there had apparently been a decision to change into civilian clothes; perhaps to blend in; she couldn't be sure but Shione felt it was a mistake; but disagreeing with a Senior officer was poor form; so she complied.

Maintaining her gear and weapons accessible she followed the Ambassador's lead through the streets and into his neighborhood , and up to his door and then...from behind the group came a loud popping sound, accompanied by a flash of yellow light. Jonas fell to the ground in a heap, like a puppet with its strings cut.

She heard Talion say "Down, but Shione's reaction was to draw her weapons; set to heavy stun and she looked for a target ready to fire....

"Get everyone inside, Jez go in first, scan the room and be ready to act; Mr Reese stay with me and scan for any energy signatures, but be prepared to fire.
Alex you and the First Officer get inside with the Ambassador, we may be under further fire, we will scan for where the shot came from!"

Of all the mistakes that could be made she would always regret that she hadn't insisted on a site-to-site transport but hindsight was useless and she had a job; namely find out who just shot a Federation Ambassador!

== NPC Reese Taylor NCO==

Changing into his suit, for once he felt like a big shot. Nice clothing that he wouldn't wear very often, just on special occasions. Fortunately they were comfortable to walk in, unfortunately the streets were far from it. There was a tension in the air that Reese could almost taste as it made the hairs on the back of his neck started to stand up, with one blink of the eye it seemed like time started to slow. The yellow beam that went by him gave a bit of a shock, resulting with him spun around phaser in hand ready to fire.

The order came to go inside Reese was walking backwards towards the door, his phaser in his right hand and Tricorder in his left. The tricorder was looking for the power signature of the weapon, Kurasa was keen to have the idea too look for the energy signal. The main principal was down that looked like a targeted hit, from where was the question. The Ambassador knew it was dangerous there, yet looked surprised he was shot.

"Aye Commander." He said with a deep voice, his focus was keeping an eye out on the environment. Anything no matter how slight would catch his attention, both big and small were equally important. Was this targeted? or was someone going to be next?

== For Talion ==

Talion’s empathic sense was to his detriment in this case. As soon as he  Jonas’s mind, he was overwhelmed by a white hot wave of radiating pain. He felt his own heartbeat weaken, like his blood had turned to a thick sludge. His concentration began to slip. Thankfully, he was able to pull back before losing consciousness altogether.

It was clear that Jonas would be dead within minutes without immediate medical intervention.

== For Kurasa ==

Thinking quickly, Kurasa was able to trace the trajectory of the shot back to the upper floors of an apartment building across the street, but she did not see any trace of the attacker in the windows.

== For Taylor ==

Taylor’s tricorder registered a beam weapon on the fifth floor of the apartment building on the opposite side of the street. Another shot did not immediately follow the first one. It seemed that the attacker may have retreated, or they may have been planning their next move.

Thinking quickly which was normally her strength Shione turned to the Security NCO. "Mr. Taylor keep your focus on that window and if you see someone there carrying what appears to be a window you hit them with a heavy stun, that is an order." She added to remove responsibility for whatever could occur from the Non-com.

Kneeling on the other side of the Ambassador's body she noted Alex's apparent distraction but there was no time for that. Tapping her comm badge she spoke.
"Commander Kurasa to Transporter room, Bridge and Medical we need an emergency medical beam out of the Ambassador to Medical, stat! He has been struck in the torso by some form of weapon and without immediate Medical care he will perish, Beam him directly to Sickbay; we have no time to lose; Engage transport now!"

As she spoke Shione reached across quickly and made sure that Alex wasn't in contact with the Ambassador when the transport engaged. adding to him, "Are you alright," she added out of concern.

Fortunately, Alex was experienced in using his Betazoid gifts. He knew the risks of trying to connect too deeply to a person that might be dying. Even with his precautions, he nearly stepped too deeply into the mind of Jonas. The feelings of the dying man were understandable and Alex pulled back almost immediately. Talion was about to tap his comm badge to call for an emergency medical transport, but he could hear that Kurasa was already one step ahead of him.

Alex commented to her, "Good call, he's dying, but I think we might still be able to save him if we can get him onto the ship in time." He then glanced in the direction the shot had come from and tried to offer what he could piece together, "My speculation is that is is likely a plasma weapon, but it is hard to say. His body is reacting to it like it is and I saw only a flash, much like a small plasma bolt and not the length of a beam, but that might have only been my perception. The sound also was more that of a projectile based, but that could just be their level of technology at play."

The whole thing happened so fast, one minute they were taking someone home to this. It has been a while since Beno had been fired at, and in some odd way she missed it. The shot hit the Ambassador hard, and before she knew it he hit the ground. Kurasa was a true asset as a Second Officer.

As he hit the ground, Beno knew a peaceful resolution just became harder. The weapon could have hit any of them, but it hit him. Why was this? As she watched her team sprung into action, Beno knew they were going to be safe. If he dies the whole idea of peace dies with him, that would be the last thing that they want.

"If it was a projectile commander, it might have been a tracer round." From that angle Beno just wasn't sure about the beam, the Doctors later would be able to tell later. Beno was also keeping an eye on the outside, she was looking for the motion of people. If people were to come out, it meant it was all over.

"Commander Kuraesa I believe its time to beam over to the meeting, we are going to get more answers there than here." Beno wanted to get out of there and get answers, or all of this would be for not.

Jez was a little caught off guard when Commander Kurasa ordered her to go in first, "Get everyone inside, Jez go in first, scan the room and be ready to act; Mr Reese stay with me and scan for any energy signatures, but be prepared to fire. Alex, you and the First Officer get inside with the Ambassador, we may be under further fire, we will scan for where the shot came from!"

Jez wasn’t sure if Kurasa wanted her to scan the room with her tricorder, or with her telepathy? So, to be on the safe side she did both. She took out her tricorder and set it for a wide scanning field, she then slowly and carefully opened her mind to the surroundings, Jez could feel her heart beating, her mind open. She turned in every direction. A visual inspection didn’t reveal anything that looked inherently dangerous in the apartment, but then things took a very unexpected turn, the apartment erupted into chaos. The Ambassador had been shot, Jez looked around, had the tricorder missed lifesigns in the apartment, had she not sensed a mind consumed by violence, was she too busy focusing on too many things.

Jez turned to Kurasa, “Commander Should we surround the building, surely the assassin would try to escape the area. Perhaps we can catch them?” Suggest Jez.

As Talion began to hear and see the obvious signs of the transporter engaging, he leaned back and said calmly, "Clear..."

He hated being transported that way, but accepted the reality of it for mission purposes. Once Jonas was gone, he returned to thoughts of his own safety and moved to a position of cover inside the doorway. Glancing around to see if the rest of their team was in one piece, he said to Velaul, "Well, we can't do anything more about him, but what about his family? Do we transport them to the ship for their own protection now? Either way, this isn't a safe place to be and I suggest we beam to the coordinates of that contact as soon as we can. With these people obviously not hesitating to become violent, they don't seem to care about the consequences. This is rapidly becoming less of a diplomatic situation and more of an extraction from a hostile combat zone."

He pulled his phaser out from under his jacket and looked the FO in the eye, "What are your orders?"

As soon as the body disappeared Shione focused on what was happening here and addressed her senior officer regarding her suggestion.

"Even if the assailant didn't run we have two issues; first we are aliens here and do not have jurisdiction and secondly our primary focus is to gather the Ambassador's family as the Commander has suggested and transport them to the safety of the Aquila."

Shione turned and caught the eye of her officer. "However your suggestion was well thought out Lieutenant and if we were able or allowed to chase the assassin I would have approved of your plan."

Turning to the FO she asked, "So shall we gather the family and have them beamed to safety before proceeding Commander?"
If so ordered she and Mala would assist and carry out the transport.

This was the kind of thing that Beno didn't like to do, but under these circumstances she had no choice. They would have to leave them exactly where they were, they just didn't have the time or ability to so. They had to get to that meeting, and they didn't have much time.

"Orders are we transport to the meeting right away, his family are citizens here and are safer here." Her voice meant business with no wiggle room. "Our business here is a lot bigger than them, and we have a very small window to stop what just got put into motion." They didn't have jurisdiction in the area, and removing a citizen even if the father was on the ship might make matters worse.

[Site to site transport five to transport to the co ordinates provided] Beno had no intention of waiting and finding out if there were more surprises waiting on them. The dangers outside could also be waiting for them inside, and who knows what might be at their home. If they had someone there ready to shoot him, chances were good that someone would be waiting there too.

Jez had a funny feeling, what if the Target of the Assassin in fact wasn’t the Ambassador, but the Ambassador’s family. Terrorists would often employ violence at important figures family to get them to do what they want them to. Knowing that the important person would often do anything to keep their families safe.kind of a reverse phycology. It was brilliant, hurt the important figure, and scared the family. The family in return begs the important figure to comply with the terrorists, to avoid the impost figure head from being hurt further. After all how could the important figure ignore the pleas of the wives and children. Oh father please sign the treaty, or give them what they want. It made perfect sense when you think about it.

“Jez looked at both Kurasa and Velaul . “Sir’s, wait a moment. Think about this for a moment. An Assassin who is trained to kill, a sniper would have excellent marksmanship. Wouldn’t he have made a kill shot, the Ambassador would be dead instantly if said Assassin was even remotely good. What if this was a warning, a political ploy, a message to the Ambassador and those who support him, "Do as we say, we got the Ambassador and your next.” Suggested Jez.

Jez let her words hang for a few moments to allow the Commanders to process what she had said. “Now, if I was the Assassin, I would stick around and see if I had been successful. Yes, we don’t have jurisdiction here, but if we can identify the Assassin then we could notify local authorities. What about Commander Tallions Holograms, we could alter her spectral parameters and have her pass as a local and track. Commander Tallion and I could use our abilities to read the crowd and perhaps pick up on the thoughts of the assassin, have his hologram follow the assassin back to the guilty party," explained Jez. “At the very least if we don’t beam the Ambassadors family abroad, should we at least assign an armed detail to watch over them, until we can sort this mess out. Wouldn’t beaming the family away raise suspicion, of whoever did this?” Added Jez.

Alex heard Jez talking about his holograms and spoke up, "I didn't deploy with any drones. As I pointed out, these people likely have multi-spectrum sensors and would see right through a hologram. Odds are, if you want me to deploy anything, it would have to be hardware. The only thing they could reverse engineer from a chassis like Cindy, would be better prosthesis, but they would still have incomplete technology, as they can't duplicate the software needed and can't get it unless I give it to them. Sadly, we would give them that technology if they worked with the Federation, as this is the sort of place I designed it for. Either way, I thought the consensus was against my deploying such assets for this mission." He looked at the FO, "Am I right on that?"

When Commander Tallion mentioned Cindy she recalled how kind she was. Jez was also surprised that Alex didn’t have some high tech slide of hand trick like a mini holo projector in a ring to have Cindy ready in emergencies, after all Commander Tallion was a genius.

“Commander, couldn’t you alter Cindy’s spectral frequency to fool the locals' sensors to allow her to blend in and pass unnoticed?”

Jez couldn’t help but feel uneasy, she couldn’t imagine how the sniper knew that they were going to let alone entering the Ambassadors residence. Someone had to have tipped them off or followed them. Thought Jez.

Before either Velaul or Kurasa could speak, she voiced her idea.” Commanders, Let's hold on for a moment, before we do anything else, let's ask ourselves. How did the sniper know we were heading to the Ambassador's residence? Surely a stranger hanging around a neighborhood would draw the attention of the people in the neighborhood, causing them to call the local Security forces, wouldn’t it. Logic would dictate that a sniper wouldn’t just be hanging around until we showed up, no someone would have to have tipped him off to our arrival.” Stated Jez, her tone matter-of- fact.

Turning to both Alex and Jez; Shione spoke quietly "The first officer has ordered us to be ready for transport and this is her command so alternate solutions are not why we are on planet. The Ambassador is in our sickbay by now and in good hands, prepare to move out.

Lt Mala, please go out and bring Taylor back inside, immediately; we need to be ready for transport,"

Shione drew in a short breath and tapped her comm badge, “Commander Kurasa to Captain Brooks. Commander Velaul has ordered us to prepare to move out, please arrange immediate transport of the Ambassador's family to the ship for their own protection. They could be threatened or kidnapped to leverage us, Kurasa out."

She approached the FO, "Commander; Lt Mala is bringing Petty Officer Reese in and we will then be ready for transport. I have requested that the family be transported to the Aquila for their protection."

Pausing to consider the possible ugly facts, Talion moved inside the residence to confirm the family was in fact still alive and well. The people they were dealing with were willing to drop Jonas at his front door. What were the odds that they had already been here and had already eliminated the family? Phaser at the ready position, but prepared to react, Alex moved to investigate.

== For Talion ==

As the door to the building was still unlocked, Talion was able to proceed inside without any trouble. The atmosphere inside was calm, contrasting the turmoil that had just erupted outside. The dim light of the entryway was enhanced by the flickering glow of a holographic fireplace.

The building was five floors tall and was divided into about a dozen apartment units. A directory near the entrance indicated that the Weisbrantz family lived on the fifth floor. A synthetic wood staircase led Talion upwards. As he approached the landing, the door to Jonas’s unit slid open, where a pale-skinned Riani appeared in the doorway. He was about as tall as Talion, but something about his posture made him seem significantly smaller. Having seen the ambassador’s mind, Talion was able to easily recognize this as Jonas’s partner.

“I heard something outside,” he said, almost out of breath. “Is everything alright?” His eyes were searching Talion for answers. Even without an empathic connection, it was readily apparent that this person knew the answer to their own question on some level.

The padd that the ambassador had given the team flashed to life as it interfaced with Aquila’s transporter. On its screen, the three moons of Riani formed a tranquil design behind the ornate structure of the hotel. The away team was authorized to transport to the reception area of the Three Sisters Hotel when ready.

A glance at posted directory told Talion where he needed to go. Naturally, it was on the top floor. He rolled his eyes and began working his way up. When he arrived, he was glad to be met by the Ambassador's partner and not another assassin. He lowered the weapon, tried to not look threatening and said, "My name is Alex. My friends and I are from the Federation and you need to quickly gather together what you need and we will be taking you to somewhere safe. We have reason to fear for your safety. Jonas wanted us to protect you."

Talion knew that he needed to try and keep the person calm and hopefully have their cooperation in preparing to leave. He also knew that he was not technically lying to them, he just wasn't telling them things that might upset them and delay their departure.

There wasn't much much going on as Reed was pulling back, it was a beam weapon that didn't take a second shot. This kind of thing was common to fire once then move, or their position would be burned. If he was a sharp shooter, he wouldn't take a second shot from the same floor. They would switch floors either up or down, or the consequences would be they would be caught.

He heard the Officers talking about what to do next, either get to the Hotel Meeting or get to the mans family. The choice was made quickly then something different happened. They are going to do what?  Wasn't it just said its safer for them here? Officers!! There was a slight eye roll while he was attempting to keep the scene secure, there was still a lot that could go wrong the longer that they stay there.

The phaser was still in his hand while he collected the package that Taylor had placed down, he was a little confused about what just happened. Were they going to handle the transport of this family, or were they going to go to the meeting?

Directly after the order to transport out happened, Talion went to talak to the family. The Family that was safer on the planet than the ship, still you can't help but to admire the humanity. The look that Beno gave to Kurasa suggested there was a report later, when she was closer to Talion the look was the same. It was clear that she wasn't exactly pleased at this time, now she had to deal with it.

With a calm voice, Beno had to step in. "Hello I am Commander Velaul, yes there has been an incident we are handling." Beno said with a reassuring voice. "There is no danger to be worried about at this time, it would be best if you stay here for now. We need time to make a few adjustments and gain clearances, right now we have an appointment to keep." It would take a little while to make sure they were able to go to the ship, and make sure they had areas that would be comfortable for them.

Beno just wanted the crew to be on the move to the meeting, right now there was no reason to create more panic than they already have. If they cause more than someone might think something is going on, and this was to be prevented.

"Right now its best to not draw more attention to ourselves than we already have,
now we have people waiting." Beno waited for the transport to happen, and get the meeting started.

Talion was a little surprised that the FO followed him up to the 5th floor and turned to address her, "Commander, I thought you were heading to the coordinates for the meeting. This area is no longer safe. I'm not sure Security and I can keep these people safe, given what has happened."

He looked around, trying to assess if anyone else might have line of sight for weapons fire on their position and then realized that the FO had not heard the orders he had been given. He sighed, "Sorry, I just realized you arrived after the Captain had given me my orders. He told me to assist Security...Security he agreed to at the request of the Ambassador. Given what we just witnessed, I"m bound by General Order Six, which states that the request for emergency assistance from Federation citizenry demands unconditional priority from Star Fleet personnel and such personnel shall immediately respond to said request, postponing all other activities."

He paused for a second, then added, "I presumed that was why the Captain assigned me to assist Security, because he anticipated something like this might happen." He paused and didn't move his head, but indicated by the movement of his eyes toward the Ambassador's partner, "Given the...event we witnessed, it is clearly not safe for the Ambassador or his family to remain at this location. Fortunately, Jonas didn't make any reference to General Order Five, as that might have been a bit awkward, but you might want to speak with the Captain, as it certainly looks like he might need to invoke General Order Eleven, at least until we can determine if the other Ambassador is in good health...if you get my meaning...Commander."

Jonas’s partner shook his head and stepped back from the door. His mouth hung open for a moment, struggling to decipher the scene taking place in front of him.

“Whatever you’re not telling me.” He took a sharp breath to steady his voice. “This is my home. This is my children’s home. Jonas told me that he would ask the Federation to let us stay, so unless you’re forcing us to leave — unless Jonas comes here to tell me that we have to go — we are staying right here. We’ve been threatened before. We’ll be okay. This unit’s security system is more advanced than most.” To illustrate his point, he tapped a couple of buttons on a terminal and a force field flashed to life in front of the windows.

The padd in Velaul’s hand chimed. The entire away team felt a reassuring tingle as the transporter began to engage. If Talion were to remove his combadge, his dematerialization would be disrupted. He only had a second to decide. The potential consequences of choosing to stay—against the orders of his commanding officer—hung heavy over his head.

There wasn't much time for talk so Beno acted quickly, plus General Order Six was for Federation Citizens unfortunately he wasn't one. According to official records there was only one Federation Citizen, and he wasn't it. There was a process to go through, and even paperwork to make this man and children a citizen. The process would be easier with a spencer, and because the children were his it would be a package deal.

Reaching for his combadge she took it off, and placed it in his hand. "I have no time to explain I am under higher orders to find out what happened, and this is a lead we can't ignore." Hopefully he was up to date with the information she sent down, they had a very small amount of time.

"No one has to go anywhere, and I know you are safe here but it would help us rest easier with a security sweep." This was a big opportunity that Beno didn't want to miss out on. "It will also go a long way to help the Ambassadors work, knowing his family was going to be ok." Her pace was quicker than normal because she only had seconds at best.

At that second that Beno could feel the transport starting, for this second Beno dropped her guard allowing an large amount of tension flow. As she started to dematerialize Beno stepped back, she had a renewed confidence that they were going to get to the bottom of this.

When they rematerialized, Beno took a second to have her eyes readjusted. Everything at this second was a blur, she wasn't sure who was around and how everything looked around her.

Commander Kurasa ordered Jez to go and get NCO Taylor, Jez left to go get him, she was careful to keep an eye out , just in case the sniper decided to take another shot. Her stomach felt like a knot was forming, she didn’t like they way things were going, A Diplomatic shuttle with sensitive equipement crashes, its occupants disappeared or maybe captured, A sniper shoots the Ambassador, This mission keeps getting stranger and stranger, Every incident brings up dozens of questions. Jez couldn’t help but think that given their proximity to Cardassian Space, that somehow the Cardassians must be involved in some way.

Jez found Taylor, “Hey they are ready to beam out.” Said Jez. Maybe , Jez was overthinking the entire situation, but even without her Telepathic abilities she could tell that things just were adding up, everything just seemed off. Clearly someone knew the shuttle's flight plan, they knew when and where to attack. That meant that someone had to be a traitor.

Jez returned inside, she heard Jonas’s partner say “Whatever you’re not telling me.” He took a sharp breath to steady his voice.

“Commander, might I suggest leaving the family here? Their Security System is impressive, but the children might feel safer and more comfortable in familiar surroundings. Perhaps, I could stay and keep an eye on them?” Suggest Jez.

Several thoughts raced through Talion's mind. He heard what the FO was saying to him, as well as attempting to evaluate the situation. There were other voices trying to give him input as well and fortunately his brain processed the data very rapidly.

The orders from the CO had been to assist the Security Team assigned to Jonas. This plan included his family, but technically the focus was on Jonas himself. He also was uncertain about the legal standing of the family, but they didn't want to leave anyway and he was certainly not going to try and abduct them against their will. There had been an attack, but they appeared to have been satisfied with their target when they shot Jonas. With Jonas being shot and transported to the ship for treatment, his task of protecting him was now null and void. The apartment had a security system and anything that would overcome that would be more than he would be authorized to engage in their defense without starting an interstellar incident. He also realized that if he stayed behind, he would not be assisting anyone, as he would be alone.

In that second, Alex realized that he had to trust that although the FO appeared to have not been briefed on his orders, he obviously had also not been entirely briefed on her orders. As his orders not longer were valid, he had to presume her orders were valid. If either of them were wrong, they would have to figure it out as they went. that was sometimes just how things went in the field. There often came a time when you had to make a decision and go with it.

The FO had taken off his badge and turned it off as she handed it to him. He made his decision, putting his phaser away, turned to the civilian family and said, "You're right. Keep your defenses up for now and remain safe in your home. If Jonas is not in touch with you by morning, someone else will be. My apologies if I scared you, but there is reason to be cautious right now."

The team was transporting. There were still glowing remains of their transporter beams as he turned on his badge once more and placed it back on his chest with a sigh. Alex really hated using the transporter, but sometimes there was no way to get around it. As he suspected, the system reacquired his lock instantly and initiated the still active transport process. At the destination, his arrival was a bit delayed, but it made him simply the last to finish materializing.

Alex looked around the "Commercial District" they had arrived in and tried to take in the details. He silently wondered if any of them would get shot by these locals, or if they only reserved that fate for Ambassadors.

== I think that catches me up and should resolve any loose threads from before. I had limited input to go on, so I decided to wing it. ==

Everyone was transported to the same area with in a safe distance, and she was happy about all of this. There was no one who was in a second location, and now it was time to tell all. "I am not sure how much time we have before we start this meeting, but most everything has changed." She said in a voice that could be heard but not very loud.

"Until recently the focus was on Sadia exclusively, we have to find out where she is and what happened. We hope she is alive and well, best case scenario its an attention grab and this can be resolved peacefully. We have our ship further investigating in every way they can, they narrowed down where the offenders went and what kind of equipment used. I hope that this meeting will net us help to find her. I have sent mission critical information ahead of my arrival, now in order to avoid further conflicts I need to know what you do." This briefing was late, but it wasn't never.

Beno had less than twenty two hours left before the fan gets hit, and she didn't want to be on the receiving end. If this was going to work, they all needed to be on the same page at all times.

Three Sisters Hotel
Commercial District, Saule City
Tanndi Nation
Planet Riani
==

The away team materialized onto the transporter pad on the hotel’s 51st floor. It was calm here, soft music wafting from unseen speakers. The transporter room opened up into a central atrium, where towering holograms of Riani’s three oblong moons floated lazily like ice cubes in a cocktail, surrounded by hundreds of guest rooms below. The upper floors of the building, where the team had materialized, were the executive suites. Moonlight filtered down through a skylight just a few floors above.

The guests on this floor were dressed sharply, in a similar manner to the Aquila’s crew. The Riani here were different from the ones they’d seen on the streets. Their cyberware was more extensive and visibly higher quality, at least for those with an eye for technology. In fact, some of them seemed to be more synthetic than organic. Unlike the Riani in the Federal district, these Riani didn’t pay much mind to the away team.

There were other aliens here, too. A Ferengi businessman was loudly closing a deal on his handheld communicator. An Orion carrying a heavy-looking suitcase slipped into one of the upper suites.

Stepping into the atrium, the away team was greeted by a simple humanoid automaton behind a reception desk. Its faceless gaze turned toward the team and waved politely, beckoning them closer. On the far side of the atrium was a dim restaurant where a few guests were drinking and talking quietly. One man with a chrome jaw was seated at the bar, drinking by himself. Velaul, Talion, and those present on the bridge when Aquila arrived in Riani space would recognize this as General Alukh.

Beaming from site to site Reese found himself in a high-end bar where people had more money than manners, most of them would think that manners was a side dish served chilled. It also made sense to be dressed like this, thankfully he was bald or he might worry about his hair a little. These were the people who would hire him as security, probably pay well too.

"Until recently the focus was on Sadia exclusively, we have to find out where she is and what happened. I have sent mission critical information ahead of my arrival, now in order to avoid further conflicts I need to know what you do." This briefing was late, but it wasn't never.

Reese was listening to what was being said, all while he was scanning the room. He was looking at the activities going on around him, he wasn't looking for threats just what people were doing. These were the kind of people who wouldn't do a lot of things on their own, they would hire someone to do it. The one person in the room who might would be the General drinking at the Bar by himself, at this time he appeared to be the only one who would handle himself very well if things turned south. The rest would have an accident in their pants, or suck on their thumb.

Turning his attention to the person at the front desk, he knew what they wanted. "The Host needs to talk to someone, probably to tell us where we need to go." He wasn't talking to anyone in particular, just who might be listening.

Talion spotted General Alukh, across the atrium and seated at the bar, "I think I see our contact. His being here can't be a coincidence."

Noticing that Coppola was referring to the robot at the desk, he frowned, but commented, "I suppose that visitors might need to check in with them. I suggest that we stay fairly close together."

He didn't want to say much more, as he wasn't in charge of the Team. Having just come from the site of an ambush by an assassin, he was understandably a bit nervous about such a thing happening again. He ran a finger across his scar and thought briefly about the shot that had given it to him.

Beno couldn't agree more with Alex they should stick together, plus if her guess was right the General was the person who sent out the invites. She heard Mr. Reese talk about the host for a second, and came up with something.

"Mr. Reese please announce us to the Host, I am sure he will give us the instructions. Mrs. Kurasa you will make the introductions to the General. Mr. Talion my escort, and Jez I need you on my right." Beno had a feeling that even though the General might not look at anything, but sees almost everything. There was a certain look that Beno was going after, one that most people would understand.

== Sorry, I used the wrong name in my last post. It should have been Reese Taylor. ==

Alex quickly fell back into his role as Beno's escort. He knew it was only a role to play for the optics of it in this strange mission they were on, but it still gave him a small nudge in his subconscious. He realized he knew very little about the social lives of joined Trill. His brain simply reacted to the fact that there was a pretty woman his own age who was on his arm. It gave his heart another pang, remembering the life he had enjoyed briefly. There was certainly an appeal to it that he could not deny, but he didn't know if his brain could ever shift into that gear again. It was something to ponder when he was in the private confines of his quarters and not while needing to keep his head about him on a mission. This was the second time his mind had wandered a little on that topic and he once more forced the thoughts into a dark corner for now.

His mind back on the business at hand, he considered all of the possible variables and how this might go. It was in a public place, so it was less likely that things would get violent again. Killing people was something Alex disliked doing. He was capable of it, but he really hoped it would not come to that. Anytime he had needed to do it, it had not sat well with him and he wasn't sure how his daughter might react if he returned to her with blood on him. He couldn't let that cause him to hesitate though. He would rather show up in front of his daughter with someone else's blood on him than be taken back to the ship dead. That thought helped him put things back into perspective as they began to move.

From the looks of things, the FO had plans on almost everything. The approach of the group appeared to be planned out, all of that was started with his introduction. The Host was waiting for someone to say something, guessing that this is how it was going to start. "Aye." Reese said before he went to the Host Station to get it started.

The small distance between where he was and the Host station wasn't that big, so everyone was within ear shot. Everyone would be able to hear what was going on. "Hello." Reese said while smiling. "We are expected." From how he was acting before, Reese assumed he knew more about it.
