TI/D01 - Ready Room

Jane perused the latest personnel changes to happen in between assignments. They still had some personnel issues to resolve before being sent on next assignment but hopefully they would be back out there soon.

The biggest changes were that two DHs had gone. She was sad to lose CMO Lim especially and wished that they had been able to retain such an experienced officer. But people did move on for various reasons. Morgenson had another posting, the young Security Chief was getting experience elsewhere which she thought was a good thing for such a green officer. He had potential and getting experience of other ships would help him realise it.

The surprise was that the replacement CoS was someone very familiar. Shione Kurasa had left, it seemed anyway, but briefly, and now was transferring back from Philadelphia. Kurasa had been on her crew on Copernicus and then Titania and she knew her well. She wondered what the story was.

The grass isn't always greener I guess...

Shione was an exemplary security officer, but had a tendency to wrap up the CO in cotton wool and that was not something she wanted to repeat. She hoped that the Security officer had loosened up a bit in her time away. Jane understood this urge as a former CoS herself, but if only her officers could understand that she was quite capable of handling herself. Being CO didn't mean you were the Federation President and had to be kept in a box. Jane had enjoyed the freedom of the last mission and intended to repeat it if possible.

Jane opened a channel:

"Fields to Kurasa, please report to my ready room."

Well, that went rather quickly, I thought the Captain was busy

She had only been aboard less than a day, exhausted by the alterations to the assignment she had been initially given. Shione had been assigned to Serran Zan's ship but to make a long story short, the whole assignment became a complete cluster%^$*..

Shione should have been sent back with the Trill officer but for some reason she had been retained, but under the command of Captain Jennifer Braggins. To say that their relationship was oil and water was an understatement and so when the opening back aboard the Titania became available, she was quick to accept it.

That is one person I will never miss, good riddance; she thought

Entering the familiar ready room, she smiled inwardly that very little if anything had changed. Fields was a person of habit, and generally for Shione that was exactly what she preferred.

We didn't always agree but we usually were able to compromise.

Standing to attention, just inside the door, she spoke officially "Lieutenant Commander Kurasa reporting for duty, Ma'am. "

And the added with the slightest of grins "Happy to be back Captain"

It was nice to see the familiar visage enter through the swishing door. Kurasa was amazonian, tall and muscular. Typical security type in that sense.

Jane smiled and rose up to offer a handshake.

"Welcome back, Lieutenant Commander. Help yourself to anything from the replicator and take a seat."

She returned to her own seat.

"I am pleased but a little surprised to see you back so soon..."

Shione nodded in appreciation, "Thank you Captain, I just finished a meal so I am good ", she added and took the proffered seat.

"Thank you, Yes Captain it was quite a surprise for me as well. And it took quite some time to sort it out." She paused gathering her thoughts.

"As you know I was requested to join Captain Serran Zan's command as her Chief of Security and for a short time all seemed well, however for some reason unknown to all aboard, she was called back to Star Fleet command and Captain Jennifer Braggins was assigned in her place.

I remained under Captain Braggins's command for two missions fulfilling my obligations, but when I received news that your ship was once again in need, I felt it was time to move back. "

She paused momentarily before completing her thoughts, "As I am certain you know that each and every Captain does things differently. But after spending what I felt was sufficient time with Captain Braggins I chose to accept the assignment here where I felt that the opinions and input of the Security department were both requested and respected prior to making decisions which affected the security of the crew.

There was no disagreement between the Captain and I. I merely chose to leave just prior to another mission start, giving the Captain time to adjust. Captain Braggins is an excellent and skilled leader, but I chose to return to a command where I believe that my opinion, while not always correct, will at least be consulted by you before you make decisions which affect the Security team as well as the Ship and crew as a whole."

She finished her thought. "I do not believe I am always right, but I know from experience with you Captain that you will at least ask.
And here I am."

Jane listened attentively as Kurasa explained her reasons for returning to Titania.

"Yes, you know me, input is always welcome. Though I may prefer a lighter touch in some respects. I know you always have the safety of the ship and crew in mind."

She moved on.

"Well, if there are any requests, let me know. It is good to have you back."

Jane strode in through the swishing door and stood behind her desk awaiting the arrival of Sothrick and Keti.

Sothrick wasted no time as he was on the heels of the Captian. He wanted to know how to correct his mistake so that this would not slow the progression of finding the new mystery at hand.

He stood ridged (not much of a change for him) at full attention awaiting for the dressing down he was sure was about to happen.

"Captain!" He simply gave.

Not to far behind him was Keti, he knew better than to keep people waiting. He was not really sure what was going to happen, and chose to stay mostly quiet. As he observed how both were situated and stood next to Sothrick, and stood next to him standing at attention. "Captain." He simply said, he was probably in enough trouble.

The two officers arrived and presented themselves.

She folded her arms a paused for a few seconds, unfolding her arms again before leaning forward on the desk.

“I’m sympathetic to the fact that you both have joined my crew from rather different positions and that this new situation will take some adjustment... as will getting used to different way of doing things that is inevitable on a new ship.” She started with a friendly enough tone.  “However, Mister Keti you have twice broken protocol on my bridge in quick succession, despite a verbal warning from me. Once is unfortunate, twice seems like carelessness…” She fixed her eyes on the Science officer. Her voice now more authoritative. “Enthusiasm and ideas are encouraged; suggestions and solutions at all times are very much encouraged. Those suggestions or solutions come to me - or whoever is in the command chair if not me. They do not go through department heads, they do not get directed to others on the bridge. You address the Captain, you make suggestions to the Captain, such as, for example, who might be best on a team... You ask and must get the Captain’s permission.”

She stood up straight again and folded her arms looking between both. "You never bypass the Captain." Her expression was pensive.

Sothrick hadn’t actively contributed to this situation and had been placed in an awkward position by Keti, but it was important that he hear this. It was perhaps not surprising that former Geronimo crew would look to the Security Chief for leadership as their former CO, of course. But Jane would have no breaking with the chain of command, especially on the bridge. The breach of protocol by Keti, completely bypassing her by asking permission from the CoS to send a science team, and then taking it upon himself to decide who was on the team, was serious enough and he seemed to have completely either missed or ignored her earlier warning to address the chair. Jane’s tolerance for breaches of protocol like this was very low. If this happened again, there would be action.

“I assume iI have made myself understood and this will not happen again.” She said neutrally.

"Thank you." The Captain moved around the desk to indicate she was done and they should get back to the situation.

Sothrick stood at the ready as Keti filed in beside him. As the superior officer he assumed whatever the error was he would get the brunt of it and he was ready to except it.

As she began he understood where the Captain irritation was. He, in some ways, dealt with the same when he took over the Geronimo.

He nodded as she finished. His first instinct was to take the blame for Keti and then apologize for letting the infraction happen. Neither was not a good response. He did not want to make Keti's honest mistake greater or undermine her by adding anything more.

Really his only reply and the only reply Keti should have too was,...

"Aye Captain."

He said then seeing that she was dismissive he turned, sharply to take his leave.

The interaction, while not pleasant, did give Sothrick a bit more of a better understanding of his new Captain. It gave him a little more respect for her. He knew of her illustrious career and even though he was eager to get back to being a Captain himself he was appreciative to have the opportunity to learn from another experienced Captain.

Knowing that the Captain was correct in most things, it just brought some inner conflict. He had to stop channeling any useful information through Sothrick, and just giving it to her strait. There might be some consequences, but there definitely will be if he didn't. It was creating an external conflict that had no room on the Bridge,  he also didn't recall sending anyone anywhere without asking her first.

It suddenly occurred to him that he definitely said it wrong, he was talking to the Commander then to the Captain. There was no way for anyone to know it happened that way because he didn't say Captain, if he were to hear the conversation he would have came to the same conclusion. Even though most in Star Fleet didn't understand Bajorans, they did provide brilliant leaders. Before he knew it Keti was standing alone, and had no opportunity to say a word.
