Federal District, Saule City

Planet Riani

The away team arrived onto a bustling city block, populated by a steady stream of people who shuffled busily along a row of brick terraced buildings. A few members of the crowd stopped to gawk at the new arrivals, but none dared to approach them directly. As the senior staff had observed in their briefing, the locals were extremely eclectic in appearance, though virtually all of them had visible cyberware implanted on some part of their body. Most had grey or purple skin, and braids seemed to be a popular choice of hairstyle. Besides that, the Riani hardly seemed to be members of the same species at all.

A cold wind whipped through the corridor, biting at any exposed skin. Above the door to each building was mounted a flag which fluttered in distress, threatening to pull free of its hoist. Each bore the symbol of a minor regional power, most of whom were familiar to Starfleet. As the away team traced the location of the ambassador’s life sign, their eyes were drawn to a shabby looking building at the end of the block. The building’s frayed cerulean flag, which looked more worn than its neighbors, marked this as the Federation embassy.

The away team beamed into the bustling city block, people shuffling in a steady stream in both directions along a row of brick terraced buildings. It remind Brooks why he preferred the country life back home to the city.

Daniel noticed the cyberware implants and it made him have a slight shiver, other than that they seemed the usual population apart from being either grey or purple skinned with a trend in braids seeming to be the hairstyle.

There seemed to be a cold wind blowing along the corridor with the force of it noticable on the flags on the buildings above their heads..

It was interesting looking at the symbols of all the different minor regional powers having a present in the area over each of the buildings. As they moved towards the location of the Ambassador some of the locals stopped and starred at them but it was nothing to worry about as far as Daniel was concerned.

They were drawn to a shabby looking building at the end of the block by the tricorder pinging the Ambassadors life sign. The buildings flag was frayed and in general looked like it could do with a bit of work needed to be done and sadly it turned out to be the Federation embassy.

"At least the building stands out." commented Brooks as they walked over to the door of the building.

"Let's hope it might be a little bit better inside."

As the away team stepped over the threshold into the Federation embassy, they were greeted by a sparsely decorated lobby, about the size of a small apartment. Nobody was present at the receptionist desk along the back wall. The crew heard the creak of a wooden door, followed by a couple of echoing footsteps from a narrow staircase. Before long, they were face to face with Ambassador Weisbrantz.

“Welcome to Riani!” Jonas said, a practiced smile on his face. He shook hands with each member of the team, shooting a weary glance over the crew’s shoulder, toward the street outside. “Please, come upstairs and make yourselves at home.”

The ambassador’s office was more decorated than the lobby below, though it was a bit too small for comfort. A stuffy warmth began to accumulate as the away team filed in. Three mismatched chairs sat on either side of a stately wooden desk. Dim light filtered through a grimy window. The ambassador had accumulated many photos, which were displayed on every wall.

“I apologize for calling you all the way out here with very few details, captain. Riani may be along the Federation’s border, but it’s a long way from the culture you’re used to. I’ve seen some encouraging signs in the past couple of years, but it’s fragile. Frankly, I think the Federation tends to forget how progress is made in developing cultures.”

The ambassador’s smile tensed, deepening the creases around his eyes. Then, his expression grew serious. His eyes still darted around the room, seemingly searching for something.

“In fact, the Federation saw fit to change our approach to Riani. They sent a new ambassador to replace me: Miss Saida Gebrezghi. The problem is that she was meant to check in earlier this week, and nobody has heard from her.”

Lt Thorn felt the eyes on her. They stood out and the locals were a bit wary. Observing the architecture, Kalli followed the others as they moved. She was expecting a bit more formality. This was certainly no red carpet treatment, but she had seen worse. At least this level of dust and dirt was tolerable and even to be expected in such a place.

Keeping here eyes sharp, she kept her hands visible, in hopes that she wouldn't make the people any more nervous about them than they already were. She took note of the devices she saw, or didn't see and was privately evaluating the place and what they had to work with. Listening to the Ambassador, she wondered what the new approach was, but felt it wasn't her place to speak up about such things.

As the away team entered the building Shione drew her tricorder out and scanned for nearby lifeforms, She listened to what the Ambassador had to say and while she was focused on that, Shione sidestepped and whispered quietly to Alex.

"I am curious ir the locals are spying on him and or us; can you do a subtle scan before the CO makes any statements that we do not want strangers hearing?"

In addition to her scans Shione also allowed herself a brief empathic scan of the Ambassador and if any others are she will briefly include them. Not sure what she wlould find she tapped her hip confirming the presence of her phaser.

Alex was a bit annoyed that they had not been warned about any inclement weather, but he had endured worse. He glanced around and took in the landing zone. The place was nothing much of a tourist attraction, but he imagined that the people who called it home liked it.

There was an occasional bit of dirt or a small stone that crunched under his feet, as they headed to what appeared to be their destination. When they entered the building, he was at least glad to be out of the wind. Kurasa was busy with her tricorder and at her request, he casually touched the device on his left forearm and then gave a good look around the embassy, allowing it to scan the entire area. He then had the data transfer to his PADD. Holding it up, he looked it over to see if his tricorder had detected any sensors or devices transmitting within range. Obviously, their comm badges would be detected, but he had no idea what else he might detect. Given they were a technologically advanced people, he expected there to at least be environmental sensors, safety devices and the likes, but he could easily identify those.

Dan was a little bit surprised by the state of their embassy building, which clearly could do with some investment.

"I don't believe there is a handbook on it yet Ambassador so I am inclined to agree with your assessment." replied Brooks as the ambassador’s smile tensed, deepening the creases around his eyes.

Captain Brooks listened and couldn't help thinking that this was very odd and why no one on the other end of the change of Ambassadors had flag up they were missing.

"I'm sure my Chief of Security could make some discreet enquiries into your replacements whereabouts, if that is alright with you Ambassador? May I also ask why the Federation decided to change the approach with this world? As you have said there is many factors and it can be fragile." said Brooks looking at the Ambassador with his icy blue eyes.

Shione nodded to the Captain's mention of the name of the Ambassador's successor and concern over her whereabouts.

"I will check into it Captain."

"Kurasa to Aquila, The replacement ambassador has gone missing Perhaps you could scan to see if you could locate someone of her species?
And if they are scanning you, perhaps raise shields? Your call Commander, Kurasa over."

== For Kurasa ==

The ambassador’s emotions were a tightly coiled ball. Despite his augmentations, his emotional state was clearly human. Fear and desprration were certainly present in abundance, though they were well contained. Kurasa also felt a sense of relief or hope, like a drowning man whose hand had just closed around something sturdy.

== For Talion ==

Talion’s scan would reveal the location of three camouflaged sensors, about the size of a fingernail, placed in discreet positions around the office, with one even being built into the ceiling. They were a relatively sophisticated design, and appeared to be capable of transmitting secure audio and video data to a remote location elsewhere within the same city.

The sensors could be disabled or tampered with easily now that Talion knew their location, though it would take additional effort to do so without attracting the attention of whoever was on the other end.

“The Federation Diplomatic Corps, in its wisdom, appears to think that living on Riani for ten years has made me into something of a native. They still see corruption, society dancing on the edge of war. They’re concerned that this planet has changed me more than I’ve changed it.” He gestured at the implants on the side of his head, as if to illustrate his point.

“I’ve pulled every string available to me to handle this situation quietly. The relationship between our governments is fragile enough as it is. It won’t withstand a scandal like this. Again, I apologize for bringing you into this mess rather blind.”

Ambassador Weisbrantz shifted slightly, looking like he wanted to say more, before he seemed to decide against.

Before the Ambassador could say anymore Velaul's voice came over the commbadges,

[Aquila to Away Team we are attracting a lot of attention up here, all eyes on the planet are on us right now. It appears they want to know us better, or what we are made of.]

Brooks tapped his commbadge, "Brooks to Aquila, just keep everything calm up there. Be as diplomatic as you can be. Brooks out."

He closed the channel and said "Sorry Ambassador, do go on."

“The Federation Diplomatic Corps, in its wisdom, appears to think that living on Riani for ten years has made me into something of a native. Captain Brooks looked at the Ambassador for a moment,

"Don't worry Ambassador, we wouldn't have been sent to assist if the Federation had given up on you. Problem with people sitting behind the desk thousand miles away means they don't actually see what is going on in real time. They only follow reports and the problem with that is when a situation like this as you say is fragile you can't say what you really need to otherwise it could cause a whole new set of problems."

Looking at both Kurasa and Talion he said,

"I am sure we will be able to find your replacement and then we can move on from there."

Dan knew the Ambassador was wanting to tell him more but clearly there was a reason for him holding back some information.

"If there is anything else you like us to do while we are visiting Ambassador let us know, we do have a gift to bring you from the Federation as a mark of respect of your ten years here. I thought you might like to come back to Aquila and have a little bit of a party to celebrate. I will also get one my officers show you around. She is a Ross class vessel and pretty well equipped for all kinds of scenarios."

Talion felt the emotional state of the Ambassador, reading the thoughts and feelings coming from him. They were quite understandable, given what they knew so far about his situation. The problem was that they didn't know enough of the finer details of that situation. He read the tricorder data from his device and glanced around the room. The devices were well hidden and were likely intended more to observe him than for him to observe others. Alex took a moment to transfer the scan data to his PADD and held it out for Kurasa to see, but at an angle that kept the information from the view of the sensors before clearing the screen and turning his attention to the conversation with the Ambassador.

Talion sent a text message to Khasim, [Continue scanning the planet for another human life sign. Until we have coordinates to start from, use us as a focal point and work in a spiral search pattern working outward. You might also scan for residual Federation warp signatures and indications from our impulse engines in the system. A ship should have arrived, but we need to confirm when and where. We also don't know where it went. It may even still be in the system.]

Remaining calm, he offered to the Ambassador, as well as the Captain, "Although I also suggest the ship as a place for you to be able to refresh yourself and give us a proper debriefing, if you feel that might send the wrong message to the people here," he glanced around the room again, "then perhaps we might seek out a place you feel is more appropriate for such a conversation."

He deliberately then gave a look to the Captain that reflected concern as he reached up and briefly scratched once right below his ear, trying to indicate that they were being monitored. He then offered, "Although, a visit to the ship would also allow us a moment to let medical give him an official scan, so that it might put the Federation more at ease about his assignment here while we assist in the situation. The Ambassador has worked long and hard at this assignment and it would seem a shame to let all of that time and effort be overlooked and for someone to start over without at least a good handoff to the next person to take up his noble task. The decade of trust and rapport that he has established is a very important element in a diplomatic process like this."

With a professional smile, he then turned to the Ambassador, "What the Captain said about our ship is true. Perhaps you might at least enjoy a good meal while you help us to understand how we can best help you, Ambassador. You certainly have earned a small taste of home before we get down to the business of how to best be of service to you here. We will most certainly help you to resolve the questions about the replacement they sent."

Talion was trying hard to put his best diplomatic foot forward. The Ambassador would certainly pick up on the efforts that he and the Captain were making to try and get him back to the ship, so they could talk more freely. He wasn't lying, as they were here to help him the best they could. The problem was that they needed him to be able to brief them on the situation and fill in the blanks about the other Ambassador. Without an overt effort that would be detected, he wasn't sure they could establish a secure setting on the planet to do that. He was confident he could jam the signals and even perhaps completely disable the devices, but that would risk sending the wrong kind of message to the people of the planet that, in their paranoid state of mind, might set them off. You had to sometimes be careful with such people, as they were very self-conscious about their relative inferiorities. The fact that there was an active power struggle in place on the planet only served as a blatant example of a need for such caution.

While the others were talking, Kalli was more interested in the Ambassador himself. She was specifically wanting to find out about what sort of implants he had acquired in his stay on the planet. The engineer silently pulled out her tricorder and did a narrow beam scan on the man. She recorded the detailed readings and tried to determine the specific types of technology they were using in their work. She wasn't the expert that Talion was on the subject, but he had taught her a great deal, as part of the drone program that she had become very involved in. She had wanted to understand the various types of interfaces and such and Talion had compared it to the technology they had encountered with the Borg. Kalli hoped that the man hadn't altered himself too much along the way, but she felt that they needed to find out.

The metallic gold bands that ran along either side of the ambassador’s head were the most obvious modifications. This sophisticated piece of machinery seemed to supplement the brain’s recall capacity through a complex interaction with the hippocampus.

Thorn’s tricorder revealed other minor modifications as well, characteristic of a man who had spent a decade in a society that primarily employed cybernetic medicine. For example, a tendon in the ambassador’s left wrist was synthetic in nature.

The ambassador’s eyes softened as the captain extended an offer to join the crew aboard the ship.

“Perhaps another time, Captain. If I leave Riani now, I may not come back. There’s a lot of resistance toward off-worlders, especially among Tanndi’s organized crime families. If word gets out that the Federation has left the planet’s surface, they may push to close the borders once and for all. President Khushku has been able to keep things civil up to this point, but her position is more tenuous than ever.

“Still, your science officer makes an excellent point, I think we should continue this discussion over a meal. There’s a wonderful restaurant less than a kilometer from here. Only a few Federation citizens have had the opportunity to sample Riani cuisine.”

Jonas made toward the door of the shabby office, subtly scratching below his ear as he passed Talion, as if to signal that he knew somewhere they would not be heard.

At the mention of a planned outing on this planet with all of it's technical savvy and complexity was NOT something that the Aquila's Security Chief was keen on and catching the eyes of both the Captain but also Alex both would see Shione's reluctance.

But if it was going to happen she needed to be ready. Stepping slightly apart from the others she tapped her comm badge and spoke in what would clearly some off as someone who was trying to speak discretely.

"Kurasa to Bridge. The Ambassador has suggested that we leave here and go to a local restaurant. Given the technical complexity and preponderance of surveillance I want a transporter lock on all of the away team including the Ambassador and if I should use Commander Velaul's first name in a contact with the ship, please transport us all , Kurasa over."

She returned to the Captain's side and spoke quietly. "The bridge is aware that we might be going out and I have initiated a rescue protocol should this go badly."

Shione had been involved in way too many dangerous away team situations to not have something ready should this all go south on them.

Talion spoke up from the group,

Daniel nodded in agreement, "Yes, I did mention to your friendly neighbors we might take a chance at some shore leave... lets go for a meal to celebrate your ten years here Ambassador."

As the Ambassador lead the way out the office Commander Kurasa came alongside him and said quietly,

"The bridge is aware that we might be going out and I have initiated a rescue protocol should this go badly."

Dan replied just as quietly,

"I certainly hope it won't come to that but it's good to know back up is available."

With the captain’s agreement, the ambassador nodded and squeezed past the away team, leading them out of the cramped office and onto the street where a gust of cold wind greeted them. He moved with purpose, occasionally glancing over his shoulder to ensure that the away team remained in tow. At the end of the second block from the embassy, he turned sharply into an alley.

This street was noticeably grimier and more dilapidated than the area where the team had materialized. A handful of shops lined either side of the narrow corridor, including a clinic that advertised affordable cyberware. The door’s power system was malfunctioning, causing it to twitch in a slightly ajar position. Passersby in this area were more brazen in their gawking at the group. Some openly sneered and whispered to each other as they passed.

“Stay close, not too much further now,” the Ambassador muttered. His tone was relaxed. Empaths among the group could detect that he was not imminently worried for their safety or his own.

After a tense walk, the group arrived at their destination. The restaurant entrance was marked by a fabric divider, reminiscent of a Japanese noren. On either side of the entrance stood a golden statue depicting some kind of bovine animal with a ridged horn. An odd (yet not altogether unappetizing) aroma wafted from the building.

Inside, the restaurant was abuzz with the din of patrons. The lights were a dim scarlet color, which glinted against the ornate decor. A violet-skinned Riani greeted them from behind a counter. The host's sleeves were rolled up to the elbow, showing off a pair of silver-colored implants running along each arm.

“Mister Weisbrantz, it’s so wonderful to see you again,” The host crooned. “Will your friends be joining us tonight?”

“Glad you’re feeling better, Yully. We’ll take the usual room, if you don’t mind,” Weisbrantz replied.

The host nodded, shooting a curious glance at the group before leading them into a private dining room at the back of the restaurant. A waiter brought glasses for each member of the party, then set down a bottle of strong-smelling clear liquor on the table and slid the door shut behind him as he left.

“Now we should be able to speak openly,” Weisbrantz said, sliding into a seat. He left the head of the table open for the captain to sit down.

“Let’s get to the point: our first priority is to find Saida Gebrezghi. I believe that she’s somewhere on Riani, possibly even here in Tanndi. I can’t prove it, but my contacts in the government are spooked. Nobody will meet with me, and there are rumors that something was shot down a couple of days ago." Jonas ran his hands through his red hair, looking tired.

“Concealing life signs is easy, but you can start by looking for the shuttle. It’ll be picked clean by now, but there could be some evidence left behind. Still, even if you find the shuttle, you’ll need to be careful. You’ve seen how overzealous the military can be.

"Please, if you have any questions for me, I’ll do my best to answer honestly.” The ambassador looked at the crew expectantly, taking a long sip from his glass.

Doing her best to simply listen and observe, Thorn scanned discretely as she walked. These people might have developed technology, but they felt like one big black market. There was no cultural pride anywhere. Everywhere she looked she saw signs of desperation and struggle. There was more than just the dirt and dust to the place. You didn't have to be a Betazoid to pick up on the deep distrust in the air.

Lt Thorn gave a confused look, "What would they be spooked about? What possible reason would they have for shooting down the shuttle of an incoming diplomat from the Federation? I don't understand how that could possibly be viewed as a good idea."

Talion noticed the change in the feelings coming from their host. For all of the less savory elements to their surroundings, this man seemed to feel more comfortable here than his office. Still, Talion didn't want to presume anything. He casually reached under his sleeve and pressed a small button on his device again, scanning the establishment as they walked through and into the private room. He was looking for more evidence of monitoring devices.

After listening to the Ambassador, Talion finally asked, "Why would some of the people not want the Federation here? I would think that they were eager for the technology they would have access to. What are they afraid of?"

Throughout the journey to the restaurant; which was something that Shione had wanted to prevent; she kept a tight focus on their surroundings as well as her own thoughts.

Their destination did nothing to assuage the COS's  concerns but the Captain seemed determined so she kept her focus on her tricorder as they entered looking to find any sign of surveillance , and did a sweep of the room before giving Talion a look. Employing the telepathic bond the two shared she passed on a brief message
~We cannot be sure what they are capable of The shuttle has been shot down, but no body. I would prefer that they cannot 'hear' us.~

Walking past Kalli she whispered, "We need to be expecting trouble, give us as much warning as you can."

She approached the Captain and the Ambassador, giving Brooks a look that would communicate to the CO that all things were not so rosy.

"I am afraid that I have some bad news, and she showed the brutal image of the downed shuttle which she had loaded to her padd, to both men, adding: "There was no sign of a body yet we can be sure that someone has her. I understand your reasoning as to why you wish to remain, however as Security Chief it is my judgement that remaining here risks you both."

She paused before addressing the Ambassador, "Sir, with respect why is risking your life worth maintaining contact here? I am not unaware of the possible benefits, but in my professional estimate it may be outweighed by the risk to us and our technology."

While speaking Shione kept a tight focus on all that was around them, paranoia perhaps, but that did not preclude an actual threat.

No monitoring devices were detected. In fact, the private room was actually insulated by a low grade jamming signal. Starfleet communicators were powerful enough to break through, but comparatively weak cybernetic implants were not.

Weisbrantz sighed in agreement with Thorn’s question. “I can only guess why. Things on Riani are tense: nations are on the brink of war. Maybe it was an accident, or perhaps a rogue actor took it upon themselves to break this alliance before it begins. I have faith that President Khushku would not order this, but she may be in an impossible situation if she finds out that it happened under her nose.”

The ambassador turned to Talion next. “It’s true that many Riani are fascinated by Federation technology, the crime families have a pretty good thing going. They’ve made it their mission to fight anything that looks like a threat to their business.”

Finally, he looked at the image that Kurasa presented. From the surface, his face seemed only to go a bit pale, though the empaths would feel the deep pit of dread that had opened up in his chest.

“How unfortunate, though it confirms what I already feared. Is your team able to find a way down to the surface to investigate? We need to move as quickly as possible.”

His eyes softened as he addressed Kurasa directly. “Commander, I understand that I’ve brought you into a mess. I’ve begun to think of Riani as my home, and I won’t leave while I still have hope for it. I believe we can solve this problem without any blood spilled.”

== Apologies, slight correction to the previous post. Weisbrantz's dialog should read:

"While it’s true that many Riani are fascinated by Federation technology, the crime families have a pretty good thing going. They’ve made it their mission to fight anything that looks like a threat to their business.”

Meaning that Federation technology would be valuable to the Riani people, but would also presents a threat to the current power structure of the planet. Please DM if you need additional clarification on anything ==

"Why would some of the people not want the Federation here? I would think that they were eager for the technology they would have access to. What are they afraid of?" asked Commander Talion while Brooks was thinking on what the Ambassador had said.

Kurasa paused before addressing the Ambassador, "Sir, with respect why is risking your life worth maintaining contact here? I am not unaware of the possible benefits, but in my professional estimate it may be outweighed by the risk to us and our technology."

Captain Brooks listened to everything his icy blue eyes checking out the Ambassadors reactions to what was being said,

"From what I can gather if the Ambassador leaves here then chances are the Federation won't have the contact they need, there is several possibilities that who ever has the incoming Ambassador could be using them or forcing them to conform into helping them maybe."

He paused for a moment,

"I am sure the Aquila will be able to scan the surface and find any trace elements of the shuttle, as Kurasa has said we need to make sure you are safe while we are here. We do not want to risk you in this fragile element of this world. I would suggest you take a small security detail from the Commanders team while we investigate this shall we say problem?"

Noting that they appeared to be in a secure room that was employing a mild jamming technology, she turned her tricorder for Talion to see and said, "I think we're relatively clear to speak freely here."

Lt Thorn examined the shuttle data more closely. Then, she silently zoomed out, verifying the coordinates before stating to Kurasa, "I can't help but look at the isolated area this went down in and think that this shuttle might have been deliberately brought down there. If so, that might be a good sign, as they may have intended to capture the pilot and not killed them. It's much easier to destroy a target than to use measured force to bring it down intact."

Talion gave Thorn a nod and agreed, "I concur."

He then listened to the Ambassador and the Captain before speaking in a softer tone, "Suppose that the safety of your family here is also a priority for you, which is only understandable. Naturally, we're concerned about the diplomatic mission here, but that includes ALL Federation citizens. We are dedicated to all aspects of the mission. We're here to help."

He then turned to Brooks, gave a small sigh and a grin that indicated this was not exactly new territory for either of them and said, "So, Captain...your orders?"

A text message came in from Samira on the bridge, transmitted to a PADD on the away team: [K to B: We may have found something. There are vehicle tracks that had been detected near the shuttle. We're tracking them now.]

Jonas nodded appreciatively at the captain’s offer. “Yes, perhaps some extra security would be wise. If you could spare one of your officers for the night, I’m sure my family would sleep much more comfortably. Our apartment has a security system, but some of the most dangerous criminals are also skilled hackers.”

He watched intently as the crew continued to discuss. He looked down at his glass as Talion mentioned that the crew’s duty was to all Federation citizens rather than strictly the diplomatic mission at hand.

“I take your point, Commander,” he said, tugging at his sleeve. “Still, not only do I believe in Riani, I also believe that what happens here matters. The Federation may not see it now, but this region of space will look very different in ten years if Riani makes close allies with the Cardassians rather than with us. They’re limited by the quality of the native dilithium, along with their suspicion of other nations and planets, but some of their technology is beyond anything else in the quadrant.”

The ambassador flushed. He hadn’t meant to deliver such an impassioned speech. As he regained his composure, the door to the room slid open and the waiter whispered something in his ear.

“If you’ll excuse me a moment, it seems someone is trying to reach me. I guess I’m not fully ostracized just yet. Please help yourself to a drink if you’d like. It’s strong, but the flavor is surprisingly smooth.”

Jonas excused himself for a moment, allowing the crew to talk amongst themselves. When he returned, he seemed almost out of breath.

“It seems you’ve made quite an impression, Captain. One of my contacts would like to speak with your crew tonight if you can meet him. He may have information on Saida Gebrezghi’s whereabouts. This padd will get you in. I'm sure I don't need to tell you to be careful.”

Jonas slid the device across the table toward the Aquila crew. The screen depicted an impressive skyscraper hotel in Saule’s commercial district, about 3 kilometers from the team’s present position.

Shione listened with interest to what the Ambassador was saying and was also mindful of Kalli's hypothesis regarding why the shuttle was brought down there; and none of it looked good from a security perspective. Whispering for Talion and Kalli's benefit she added; "I agree it does not pass the smell test."

As the Ambassador pointed out the possible benefits she was also hearing what Samira had mentioned about there being tire tracks, and paused for a moment to gather her thoughts before addressing all the Crew present plus the Ambassador and spoke quietly.

"The tire tracks suggest to me that the shuttle was deliberately brought down there, so that person’s unknown could capture the Ambassador and to be frank it all kinda 'smells' like a trap to me. and if that IS true then we would be risking far more than losing contact with the Riani.

We have 3 senior officers plus the Captain of a Federation starship here on planet and while I do agree with the Ambassador that it IS a viable possibility that this invite is legitimate and safe, it could simply be a part of a larger picture to hold us hostage in order to get what they truly want ;which is, I believe would be our technology."

She paused and the turned to the Captain. "It IS your call Captain but this does feel like it could be dangerous and as your Security Chief I am advising that in the least that you not attend Sir. Clearly the decision is yours, but I would be neglecting my duty if I did not warn you of just HOW dangerous this idea is."

Shione drew a deep breath and added; "However Sir if you do choose to go there the I would suggest that we beam there, but only after we obtain some transporter enhancement to be more certain that we would not end up as their prisoners.

And Ambassador just exactly who is this contact and what can you tell us that might ensure us, of the safety of this team and our Captain? With respect Ambassador I want to know everything you know about this contact including what you know about HIS loyalties and your level of trust in him, Sir."

The Captain would see that Shione was not at all keen about this but was prepared at least for the worst.

There was a message that came on the Padd again, this time it said Urgent Message Star Fleet Only.. Then soon prompting a command code  [Commander Kurasa: Star Fleet Eyes Only... We have twenty four hours to put this to rest, after this time Star Fleet is escalating this to War. Information has arrived that states our Ambassador is in league with the established Crime Families, who might be responsible for the disappearance of the Ambassador Gebrezghi. He is being relieved of duty there, this is in leu of having a formal investigation.]

==Addendum to Shione's post==

While speaking with the CO and the Ambassador; Shione surreptitiously allows the Captain and the Chief Science officer to read the post from Cdr. Velaul, all the time without alerting the Ambassador to what she is doing. The CE is not in a position to witness it at that moment.

Brooks was thinking over the Ambassadors words after he exited and his body language as to what was going on. It wasn't long before the Ambassador returned seeming like he was almost out of breath.

Daniel icy blue eyes looked carefully at the Ambassador, "That is surprising considering we haven't done that much apart from arrive." he said looking over at Kurasa who then asked a few questions before recommending that he should probably return to the ship if any further investigation should be done.

As she did so Kurasa showed Brooks what was on the PADD which made for interesting reading, lucky enough Dan remained poker face due to his experience being a medical officer in not giving away anything to a patient when they were in deep trouble or when he was in the casino playing blackjack.

Captain Brooks looked at the Ambassador as he said,

"Commander Kurasa, I quite agree with your assessment it could quite easy be a trap where the shuttles been brought down. I would suggest you return to the Aquila and formulate a plan on how to attempt a rescue before we go jumping in."

Brooks eyes looked closely into the Ambassadors.

"As for the information may I suggest they speak to Commander Kurasa as she will be leading up the investigation into the whereabouts of the missing Ambassador."

Looking at Kurasa he said, "Bring down extra security to assist you."

Turing to the Ambassador he said,

"I will need to return to the ship and assess things from there, I may in the meantime send my First Officer down. Until then Commander Kurasa will be in charge of this part."

Looking at Talion and Thorn he said,

"Commander Talion will assist the security team, Lieutenant Thorn, return with me."

Looking back at the Ambassador he said,

"With all things considered with your family and how worried you are at stepping off this planet I would say step up security with more then just one of our officers as it probably won't be enough. This seems more fragile then I first expected."

Captain Brooks tap his commbadge and said,

"Aquila, beam myself and Lieutenant Thorn up."

Jonas shrunk slightly as Kurasa questioned him about his contact.

“We’ve never met in person,” he admitted. “I know that they hold a high position in government, and their vision for Riani aligns with the Federation’s ideals. They’ve been working to get someone like President Khushku into office since before we made first contact. I haven’t heard from them since the election, but I’m sure it’s not a coincidence that they’ve chosen this moment to resurface.”

As Brooks outlined the plan, Jonas finished his glass of the strong-smelling liquor. Seeing that none of the crew had helped themselves, he poured a second and downed it in a swift gulp.

“On this matter, I’ll defer to your judgment, Captain. You should be able to use the credentials on that padd to establish a secure transport link with the hotel. It may take some more creativity to reach the crash site undetected and begin your search for Ambassador Gebrezghi, but keep in mind that the Riani are significantly behind the Federation when it comes to starships. I’m sure you have some tricks they won’t have thought of.”

With that, the ambassador stood in front of the door to the restaurant’s dining area. He regarded each member of the away team solemnly.

“I should be getting home to my family. Thank you all, sincerely, for your help. Commander Talion, my apartment is not far from the embassy if you’d like to walk. I’m afraid it will be a bit cramped with multiple guests, but we will make room.”

The Aquila had maintained close tabs on the away team. Despite the planet’s interference, Brooks and Thorn both felt the comfortable sensation of a secure transporter lock as they beamed back to the ship.

As the CO stood and began to move to a better position for beaming out, Thorn also stood, but leaned toward Talion and said in a fairly hushed tone, "Do you need anything, before I leave?"

He understood what she meant, but had to admit that he was a little surprised that she thought to ask. Thorn never offered to part with her karambit, not for anyone. Her asking was a testament to how close they had grown over the years. A respectful and almost fatherly smile came over his face as he replied in the same tone, "I think I'll be fine."

Thorn gave a single nod in return, "Very well, Commander. You know how to reach me if you need anything."

She then moved to stand next to the CO. Seconds later, they vanished in the shimmer of a transporter beam.

As Kalli and the Captain departed Shione turned to Alex and added quietly "I intend to bring down a couple extra security and ask the First Officer if she would like to join them."

Stepping aside she tapped her comm badge

"Commander Kurasa to the bridge. Given the nature of the situation, I would like to request additional security personnel namely; Ensign Mala and Security NCO Taylor Reese to beam down to my location as soon as it is convenient. And should Commander Velaul wish to accompany them. I would request that all arrive with Phasers. We are looking at a potentially troubling trip to meet a senior government official and we could face unknown potential threats, Kurasa over."

As Kurasa was talking to the ship, Talion tried to evaluate Jonas a little more closely. It was rare that he employed his Betazoid abilities, but considered this to be a worthy exception. He had been feeling out the situation rather passively since they beamed down, but now that they were about to move to a different location, he was looking for the non-verbal indications, as well as any unguarded thoughts he might be having. Talion was worried about if this was any kind of a setup or not.

Jonas was currently suspect in the eyes of the Federation. Talion and the crew were duty bound to question his motives and be aware of what was actually going on. They would need to act on behalf of the Federation and to protect as many of those involved as possible (perhaps from themselves), but with priority on members of the Federation.

Talion tapped a couple of buttons and sent the image of the location they would be heading to. The image was sent to his own computer system on the ship, as well as the ship itself, specifically to Science. He knew that the ship's sensors were monitoring them and trying to maintain a lock. He added a simple text that said they were heading to a new location to meet with a contact.

Jonas was overwhelmed by exhaustion, somewhat muting the lingering feelings of fear and desperation that he had displayed throughout the evening. Talion did not pick up any sign that Jonas was intentionally deceiving the crew. His unguarded thoughts were worried about his family’s future.

Jonas cleared his throat. “As I understand it, a security detail will accompany me home? For those of you who are beaming to the hotel, best of luck. I know your responsibility is to Starfleet and to your crew. I trust you’ll act in your best judgment, but do your best to get the information you need without causing a scene.”
