Jez escorted Mike into the Security complex of the Aquila. The Security Officers were well trained and efficient, a testament to Jez’s command style. Just then, a Vulcan crewman approached Jez. “Lieutenant, I completed the inventory of the Hand phasers and contacted Engineering about fixing the Replicator in the Brig, and I need your signature on these field med kits.” Said Sovak. Sovak was the perfect example of Vulcan efficiency. “Oh Sovak, I want you to meet my mentor, Ted…uh, Mike Denton,” Said Jez. Sovak looked at the towering stranger; he had seen many humans, but this Mike was the biggest he recalled seeing. “Oh, you’re Lieutenant Mala’s mentor. She has told us so much about you. I’m honored to meet you, sir.” Said Sovak, with his eyebrow raised. Mike smiled and gave the traditional Vulcan hand-up, thumb-out, and he spread his fingers, "Live long and prosper". Sovak was pleasantly surprised and returned the Vulcan greeting, "Peace and long life," replied Sovak. Mike smiled even more and said to Sovak, “Ish-veh's refreshing tor zhu-tor Vuhlkansu va'ashiv ( It's refreshing to hear Vulcan again) “Mike’s wife T’Sara was Vulcan,” said Jez. Sovak nodded and then returned to duty, clearly impressed by Mike. Mike was impressed that Jez had become Acting Chief Of Security for the Aquila; he hadn’t achieved the position of Chief of Security until his early thirties, but Jez beat him by a decade. He was truly impressed by how the Security Officers seemed to admire and respect Jez. She’s really starting to get on my nerves—Security Chief in her twenties. Jez led Mike to her office; she had a few holoimages of Mike and T'Sara, as well as a few of her friends from her parents' archaeological dig team. “You have really built a first-class Security Team here. I’m impressed.” Said Mike. Mike was truly impressed with Jez; she was a true leader, and the people of the Aquila really seemed to hold her in the highest regard. Mike felt a surge of pride; he taught Jez the Martial Arts, he taught her strategy and tactics, and considering the beating she laid on him, he had done a great job. Mike took Jez by the shoulders and kissed her on the forehead, the way a father would kiss a child. “Jez, I’m so proud of you.” Announced Mike, with a tear in his eye. Jez saw the tears. “Why are you crying?” she said. “I’m not crying, clearly because the environmental controls aren’t set properly; it’s so dry in here. “ Countered Mike. Jez smiled. “Hey, I heard Commander Velaul has something going on in the Holodeck; her parties are amazing. You want to go and check it out?” Suggested Jez. “Alright, sounds better than this overly dry office.” Replied Mike. “And I wasn’t crying.” Added Mike. >> Peace Prevails >>
Jez was still on cloud nine from the celebration they had in Ten Forward after their little after-evaluation by Commander Velaul. Sovak was in the middle of the New Crew Security Orientation, which was finishing up. Yes, it was boring, like watching paint dry, but it was necessary. New crew members needed to know the proper procedures for life aboard the Aquila. The briefing was usually about two hours long, plus another thirty minutes for questions and answers. It covered topics such as what to do during an evacuation, which transporter room to report to, where the escape pods were located, and what areas were off-limits to civilians. It covered a vast array of topics, so, of course, Sovak, being a Vulcan, was both thorough and annoyingly detailed.
It wasn’t that these New Crew Security Briefings weren’t important. It was just that Jez didn’t necessarily enjoy telling overprotective parents that Security didn’t provide babysitting services. That would fall under Family Support Services, particularly Chief Petty Officer Alvish Yizzah. Just as the briefing was finishing up, the computer’s voice came across all decks in a loud, calm, and clear manner: [Attention... Attention... Attention... This is not a drill. All civilian and non-essential personnel are to evacuate immediately. If you are not an active-duty member of the crew, you are to report to an evacuation point immediately. Please follow the flashing arrows and proceed in an orderly manner. If you require assistance, simply say in a clear voice that assistance is required, and the computer will direct the crew to assist you in evacuating. This is not a drill.] “All right, people, you heard that. All Security personnel, report to your evacuation posts. Help all the civilians. Sovak, I want you in the Main Transporter Room,” ordered Jez. “Aye, sir,” said Sovak. Jez turned to Mike. “I’m afraid that means you as well,” she said. Mike smiled. He was so proud of Jez. “Yeah, I know. Keep your eyes open and your head down,” he replied. Jez gave her mentor a small kiss. “I will.” Mike turned and made his way to the nearest transporter room. >> Bridge.>> |
