The Captain’s stateroom on a Zephyr-class destroyer was a study in efficient, utilitarian design, compact compared to the sprawling quarters found on a heavy cruiser or a Sovereign classed starship, but structured to maximize every centimeter of space. Ameen had customized the standard Starfleet neutral-grey bulkheads, softening the sterile environment with warm, earthy tones, subtle ambient lighting, and physical touches of home.
A shelving unit held an eclectic collection of items: a mechanical watch repair kit with specialized loupes and tweezers, a few data slates, and a framed physical photograph. A small, beautifully detailed scale model of the USS Intrepid sat neatly on the shelf next to the watch repair kit and the framed photograph. Crafted with precise metal plating and bearing the classic Starfleet registry lines of an early heavy cruiser, it was a piece of history and a deeply personal memento. The model was a parting gift from Captain Gabriel Archer, Ameen's very first Commanding Officer, given to him when he completed his initial tour as a junior officer on a ship. It served as a quiet reminder of where he started before he end up in the center chair of his own destroyer. The low hum of the ship’s life support and warp core vibration was masked tonight by the deep, soulful resonance of classic Arabic tarab, the gentle strains of an oud echoing quietly against the bulkheads, and the rich, savory aromas wafting from the compact kitchenette alcove. Ameen had spent the last hour working off-duty, trading standard replicator rations for authentic preparation. Two traditional Syrian dishes sat warming on the counter: a fragrant, herb-infused shish barak in a silky garlic-yogurt broth, alongside a spiced plate of muhammara paired with freshly warmed flatbread. He dimmed the primary overhead optics to a warm amber glow, setting a quiet, relaxed atmosphere away from the rigid demands of the Bridge and First Contact protocols. With the table set for two, Ameen stepped back, smoothing down his navy blue shirt just as the chime at the stateroom door sounded. She's here!... "Come in!" Morad said and the door was unlocked. == Tag Amila (Welcome to dinner!) ==

Amila's eyes darted around the corridor outside of Morad's stateroom until the doors opened for her and she was safely inside. She smiled brightly, though also somewhat shyly when she saw him standing there, his mere presence magnetic. She let out a soft sigh, relaxing into the atmosphere as she took in the relaxed atmosphere and the way his navy shirt softened the edges - the wall between them when they were in uniform.
She took a slow step toward him, her hand out subtly, a slight reach for his. She had worn a lavender dress in a soft, silky fabric that draped below her neckline, and hugged her curves, showing off her waist until it fell loosely around her hips. She'd never been one to wear dresses much, but something about him and this date in particular made her want to wear something special. "Hey, you," she said softly. "Looks like we're finally alone." Her eyes twinkled as she spoke. She knew it had been hard on both of them - keeping a professional distance in public, now that he was the Captain. Though she had to admit, there had been more than once where he had surprised her with as close as he was willing to get, even in the public eye. ==Tag Morad (All the flatbread!)==

Morad’s expression softened instantly at the sight of her, the lingering gravity of the Bridge washing away completely. Stepping forward to meet her halfway across the compact stateroom, he took her outstretched hand, his thumb gently brushing the back of her knuckles.
I didn't realize how much I missed her touch... "We are finally alone," he echoed, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face. He let his gaze linger for a moment, taking in the lavender dress before stepping aside to gesture toward the small dining table. "And trust me, the professional distance was wearing on me just as much. Come in, get comfortable." He led her toward the small table where the deep, resonant notes of the oud continued to drift softly in the background. Pulling out her chair, Morad made sure she was settled before taking his own seat across from her. "I hope you're hungry," Ameen said, reaching over to pick up a piece of the freshly warmed flatbread. He tore off a piece and scooped up a generous portion of the spiced muhammara, offering it to her across the table. "I traded a few favors with the replicator techs to get the ingredients right for this. Let's see if it tastes like home." == Tag Amila (Tastes good I hope?) ==

The way Morad was offering to feed her from across the table made Amila let out a joyful laugh before she leaned in to take a bite. Out of caution she put her right hand under her chin as she pulled away, worried that she might make a mess of the richly colored dip. She savored the sweet and spicy meld of the flavors of the dip. And the flatbread. He'd introduced that to her before, when it was warm like this, it was a treat just on its own.
"It's really good," she said covering her mouth as she spoke, worried that she still had food in her mouth. "A perfect amount of heat, I think a chef might say." "You tell me, does it taste like home?" She watched him with interest as if eating had now become a spectator sport. She loved to watch him when they were together, to pick up on his reactions, to see the way he took in the world around him, the way he looked at her. She used to watch him discreetly from the Bridge, back when she had what she thought was an unrequited crush. Now, she found herself avoiding looking at him altogether when they were on duty. An awkwardness that she was sure that they would grow out of if they were allowed to continue to work together. But she wasn't in a rush for the newness, the novelty of what they had to fade away either.

Morad smiled, a soft, fond look in his eyes as he watched her carefully navigate the spice.
Good, I think she does like it... you can relax and stop holding your breath now, Morad... "Well, any chef worth their salt would be flattered," he said, setting his piece of flatbread down and reaching across the table to gently catch her hand. He gave her fingers a soft squeeze. "And to answer your question... yes, it does. It tastes like family. It tastes like a kitchen that was always too small for everyone trying to move around in it." He stood up smoothly and walked over to the compact kitchenette alcove. He picked up two steaming bowls of the shish barak, the rich aroma of the herb-infused dumplings floating in the silky garlic-yogurt broth filling the air, and brought them back to the table, setting one carefully in front of Amila. "Alright, the true test," he said, taking his seat again and picking up his spoon. "Let's see how the replicator tech did with the broth. Tell me what you think." == Tag Amila (Time for the main course?) ==

"Chef worth their salt?" Amila giggled. "Is that a pun? I thought chef's didn't like it when you added salt?" She teased as she sat up straighter in her seat to watch him watch into the alcove and carry back two dishes.
"This looks different, smells delicious," Amila commented as he placed her dish in front of her. "What did you say this is?" She took her spoon and examined the way the dumplings floated in the creamy broth, taking note of the herbs and spices. "I don't know if you just planned it this way because you're still trying to impress me, or if all Syrian cooking is like this, but I remember this from the Holodeck too. The smells - the spices, everything just seems to ... I don't know, blend well together?" She commented and then smiled shyly. "I don't know if that makes any sense at all, but I don't walk into a Mexican restaurant or a Bajoran restaurant and just have the spices and smells feel almost like a warm hug." She was blushing now, as she realized her spoon was still perched, half in the broth. "I'll stop talking now and eat." She looked down at the bowl and carefully picked up a dumpling and some of the broth with her spoon and brought it to her mouth for a bite. Feeling Morad's eyes on her, she brought her left hand to her face and covered her mouth slightly as she chewed. Her eyes lit up and she nodded in approval at the flavors before swallowing. "Very good. You said the replicator did this, though?" She asked, her ever teasing smile playing on her lips. "I'll have to figure out how to pay my compliments to the chef later." == Tag, she's feeling cheeky lol==

Morad let out a rich laugh at her salt quip, shaking his head with a grin as he took a spoonful of his own broth.
"Guilty on the pun," he conceded, resting his forearms against the edge of the table. "And to answer your question, this is shish barak. Meat-filled dumplings poached directly in garlic-mint yogurt broth. And yes, the 'warm hug' effect is very much intentional. Syrian food is built around comfort, layering garlic, mint, coriander, and pine nuts so nothing fights for attention, it just comes together." She looks exceptionally beautiful in this light... doesn't she... He watched her savor the bite, catching the blush that touched her cheeks when she realized her spoon had been hovering. When she made her teasing remark about paying compliments to the chef later, Morad’s dark eyes flashed with quiet amusement, leaning forward slightly as his gaze locked onto hers. "I'll have you know, the replicator may have synthesized the raw ingredients, but every spice ratio and temperature setting was manually adjusted by hand," Morad pointed out smoothly, a warm, confident smirk touching his lips. "So I fully intend to hold you to those compliments later." He took another bite, letting the comfortable silence and the soft strains of the oud fill the room between them for a heartbeat before speaking again. "So, CSO Ra'an... now that we're off duty, no sensor logs, no bridge alerts, how are you actually feeling after everything that happened?"

Amila nodded in mock seriousness as Morad defended his role in the meal preparation, "I'll have you know, the replicator may have synthesized the raw ingredients, but every spice ratio and temperature setting was manually adjusted by hand," he had pointed out smoothly, a warm, confident smirk touching his lips. "So I fully intend to hold you to those compliments later."
“Mm-hmm,” she agreed, before giving him a playful wink. She reached over and helped herself to more flatbread, and the spiced dip he had given her when she first arrived. The bread and dips he’d shared with her were quickly becoming favorites of hers. Amila was still surprised that she felt so at ease with Morad, sitting with him like this after these last several years of working with him as her first officer and carrying a silent crush on him. Her crush had sometimes made her nervous around him in the past, and she was still cautious, or trying to be. What they had talked about trying to do here wasn't without obstacles. Cautiously optimistic. He had taken another bite of the dumpling dish, so there was a brief moment of comfortable silence between them, the warmth of the shared feelings and the comfort food and soft aromas filling in the quiet, before he reopened the conversation. "So, CSO Ra'an... now that we're off duty, no sensor logs, no bridge alerts, how are you actually feeling after everything that happened?" “Everything?” Amila repeated. She took a sip of water before continuing. “That’s a broad question since so much has happened since we last had a chance to talk like this. But if Chief Science Officer Ra’an is answering, then I’d have to say, I’m still pretty excited about getting a chance to witness First Contact, here on the ship. That was a first for me, as I’m sure you know, since you’ve been present for pretty much most of my career.” “Still feeling a little rough about my position as Chief,” she admitted. “I knew Captain Fields was considering me for the spot on Titania eventually, but I thought there’d be more training, a transition. I’m sure it will come to me - the comfort with it. But, like, I had no concept of how close we were to blowing up over on the Broken Arrow.” “I mean we knew, we were rushing,” she continued. “But even as we were beamed away and I’ve reviewed the aftermath of it, I still don’t think I’ve really processed that. And now that I have people under me.” “How do you do it?” She asked. Her expression was serious, and she was obviously not just asking from one officer with less experience to another more experienced officer, but she was asking with empathy to the person she had strong feelings for - the weight of his position she was only just beginning to understand. ==To the Commander== |
