When he finally arrived at Star Base 214, Leo didn’t waste any time in locating and transferring himself across to the Yeager. It was still in a repair dock and with no damage to be seen, he thought it would be ready to go at a moment's notice and hurried himself along. As Leo carried his belongings towards the catwalk to enter his new home, he stared out of each passing window and noted to himself that as much as he saw that the ship was of the Pathfinder Class, he also saw that it was somehow different.
What a beautiful ship!
Leo had heard of the Yeager but some things that he heard in the academy were widely considered rumour but some investigating of his own during his journey here showed him just how impressive the ship was, especially in the right hands and despite Starfleet's apprehension to the ship by giving it a very discreet, unceremonious launch and attempting to keep it as an out of sight cargo runner. The crew, he noticed in his study of the ship, were also quite impressive. Mostly transferring from the U.S.S. Philadelphia with a handful of other transfers and a number of newly graduated officers, a couple of whom that Leo recognised, or at least their names.
So, most of them already work in a tight-nit manner, otherwise the captain wouldn’t have kept working with them, and some other new recruits. This is going to be fun, isn’t it?
Leo considered how he would fit in with such an already established family and began to sweat at the idea of possibly not fitting in at all. Captain Braggins alone had an extensive and highly decorated career which by itself made his new captain rather intimidating.
Trust is earned. Loyalty is proven. Friendship is given. Just do a good job, that’s all. You don’t have to be an over achieving hero to make it. And don’t ruffle any feathers. Leo recited internally.
The paragraph from his father’s reply to a message he sent about his graduation, rattled around in his head as he walked across the docking port and into the U.S.S. Yeager. The light bounced off of his ginger hair, giving it an almost pulsing glow as he walked through the starship and he nodded his wordless greeting to the crewman who passed him in the corridor. After locating and having a brief discussion with the quartermaster, Leo found his quarters and dropped his bags by the bed before he checked and corrected his uniform and double checked his new rank pip.
Making his way back through the corridors, his hazel eyes lit up like a child on its birthday as he learnt more and more information from his Padd on his way up to the bridge. The turbo lift opened and the bridge of the Yeager appeared before him and it was a glorious sight. 4 years of training and exams had all come down to this. The first step in his career.
Stepping out of the lift, no one seemed to pay any mind to him until he stepped up to the captain's chair when he suddenly felt like everyone around him had stopped what they were doing and turned to stare at him. He shrugged off the feeling and proffered a Padd to the captain which contained his assignment details.
You're nervous. Remember to breathe and speak clearly.
“Captain Braggins, Midshipman Leo Alden. I am assigned as your new security officer.” He said maybe a little too rushed.
