Almost as soon as he started talking, it became obvious that this was not the introduction that the young Midshipman had wanted or expected; Jenny had seen and experienced her fair share of botched introductions, but the younger man seemed to be taking this particularly hard as his words tumbled out of his mouth like a waterfall, simultaneously failing and succeeding in introducing himself to his new Captain.
It won't look good if the kid drops dead from apoplexy on his first day...
The Midshipman stepped back and away from her, having not yet offered his name, and Jenny knew then that there was maybe one more social faux-pas before the man had a complete and total breakdown. With a speed and strength that belied her diminutive size, Jenny snatched the Midshipman's arm and pulled him back the step he had taken to prevent him trying to escape. The grip was not so tight as to injure the taller man, but was firm enough that he also wasn't going anywhere without forcibly extricating himself from her grip.
I doubt assaulting his new CO is on his to-do list, so we should be okay here...
"Chill your beans, kid. It's not the end of the world, your career hasn't come crashing to an end, and as far as I can tell nobody has died. Just breathe and take a moment; they can all wait, I hate working to other peoples' schedules anyway."
Once Alden had suitably calmed himself, Jenny released his arm and stepped back slightly to give the younger man some space.
"Why don't we start again, from the top. Slowly this time, and remember to breathe."
