"Likewise Midshipman. I'm glad to see you haven't run away from what Star Fleet Engineering calls the "nightmare" of fusing a Pathfinder saucer and a Yeager hull."

Callan paused for a moment to think of how to reply to the Commander’s question. He had a lot of questions of his own about the Yeager and had been looking over the schematics in fine detail. Where should he begin? Before he could pick some starting point though someone else wanted the Gorn’s attention, then another came over to speak to him as well. It seemed that everybody wanted to speak to the Gorn. This puzzled the young Scot. Was he the only person that was unnerved by this being? The newcomers all seemed to be higher rank than he was, so maybe it was down to experience. Not only was Cal a mere midshipman, but he’d hardly ever left Earth apart from his Academy training. Out here, away from the heart of the UFP, exploring space and encountering the many varieties of life forms, maybe it made meeting a Gorn in Starfleet one more unremarkable thing, like, oh it’s a Tuesday? It was something for Callan to muse over, and right now this room was getting crowded, too crowded for any real conversations, so instead of saying to his new senior officer that he was really interested in the integration of two vessels to make a new one, he stayed quiet. If he were to be working with the commander for the foreseeable he should have plenty of time for ‘shop talk’.

He downed the second glass of whisky and turned to the bar for another refill. Then he found a spot to stand where he was close enough to just about hear the conversation of the group he’d just been with, but could also look around the room at the other strange faces assembled. A sip of his drink and his mind began to wander and wonder where Amethyst was. Doctor Bremner that should be, but he couldn’t help thinking back to how she reached over to hold his hand while they sat in the captain’s office a few hours earlier. He hadn’t known how to react to that, or whether he even should, right there under the gaze of their new commanding officer. No, of course he shouldn’t, so why had she reached out like that? It wasn’t like they knew each other that well. Maybe it was a Betazoid thing, something to do with their empathic abilities, was that how they worked? He was no exo biologist and his knowledge of other species was limited to what he’d learned at the Academy. He was better with engines and warp cores.  He hadn’t known she was Betazoid when they first met on Deep Space Nine, and he’d thought that Betazoids had black pupils, while Amethyst’s eyes were green as the grass in a Highland glen on a summer’s day. Maybe she was only half Betazoid? He didn’t know, but he found himself wanting to find out more about her. He thought some more about her eyes before shaking himself mentally free. This was no time to get soppy either, there was about to be a speech and ceremonial launching of the ship, or something, he didn't know. Still, the young doctor sure was pretty, he thought wistfully.
