The following morning, after breakfast. Maz having said goodbye to her father, walked once again back down the hill toward the outskirts of the town where the modern transporter hub was located. Mike was standing in the doorway of his butchers shop.
“Will we be seeing you any time again soon?” He asked.
“You mean twenty years was too long?” She quipped back keeping her hands in her pockets against the chilly morning air.
“Here,” He said holding out a brown paper bad containing a sausage sandwich. “For your journey.” But after a pause, he added, “You can stay longer you know. Starfleet has been around for a couple of hundred years now. I'm sure they can do without you for more than two days.”
Maz took the brown bag and pocked it. “And you could come with me and see what's outside this...” She was about to say something she knew would sour her and Mikes new reconnection from last night, so she stopped herself.
“I will stay in touch, this time.” She said.
Mike nodded. “I'll tell you what. I'll walk you the rest of the way.” He said. “Let me get me coat.”
== San Francisco ==
Mike didn't come. She knew he wouldn't. The difference between the near silence of Wincanton to the hustle and bustle of San Francisco was almost deafening in relative comparison despite it being the early hours here, and certainly disorienting for a brief second as she stepped out of the transporter in the warm air.
“Excuse me, Lieutenant Black?” Asked a young Midshipman wearing a support uniform stepping before her.
Maz stopped. “Yes?” She replied. She wasn't in uniform and wasn't expecting anyone else to know she was here.
“Commander Gadling sends his regards, and asked me to escort you to his office when you arrived.”
Hobb? Of course he knows I'm here...
She knew she had a couple of hours before she was due to board her transport from the starbase that would take her back on her several week return journey back to DS9, and obviously, so did Hobb.
Giving a resigned nodd to the young Middy who looked tired from having to wait for her arrival, She said, “Escort away.” Then she held out the still warm wrapped sausage sandwich. “You look like you could use this more than me.”
