The captain stood still as he spoke but Leo could swear there was a look of… upset? disappointment maybe?
Oh no, what have I done wrong?
A small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth while Leo finished a much clearer self introduction. It was definitely better this time, he spoke clearly, he breathed, but the feeling of stupidity was still washing over him from mere moments ago.
Is it too formal? Did I get too relaxed? Shut up! Let the lady get on. You're being a pest!
"Don't worry kid, I've seen worse introductions from graduates way less qualified than you. Lieutenant D'Tor'an is around here somewhere; look for the Klingon who doesn't want to be here, you can't miss her."
What's that supposed to mean? Not really the place for it, sure, but, worse introductions from graduates way less qualified. The thought rolled around his head knocking over every domino of confidence he'd moments ago erected. Shut! Up! Let her get on. His mind argued with it's self.
His introduction complete, she stepped away from him, continuing on her path towards the stage but turned to flash him a smile. A reassuring smile or look of disbelief as to what she had just witnessed, he was unsure.
"Welcome to the Yeager."
Her last words before gently shooing him off actually made him relax. As she walked to the stage, he briefly contemplated who he was, and what he would become, a bumbling fool or someone these people would be proud to serve with but that was a conversation to have with himself at a much later date. Keeping his mouth shut for once, Leo made his way to the bar where a few officers stood talking. Deciding not to make more of a fool of himself for one night, he moved to one end of the bar where there was a promising lack of people, ordered himself some water and looked out into the crowd, keeping his eyes peeled for ‘the Klingon that didn’t want to be here.’
Everyone else is drinking. Why did you order water?
Still perusing the crowd for his new Chief, Leo listened carefully to the captains drawn, but rousing speech about how Starfleet didn’t want or care for the Yeager and despite not being a ship of historic significance, it was going to be. Filled with sarcasm and the odd dig here and there, Leo had a heartfelt moment as the speech finished about the crew being a family, that even though away from their actual families, they would have each other. Leo slumped slightly as the words hit him like a freight train.
The Captain offered anyone else to embarrass themselves upon the stage and like some others, Leo turned his head this way and that to see if anyone else would. After a moment, he sipped his water and continued to look around for Lieutenant D’Tor’an.
