Ceremony in White

Mika raised an eyebrow when it was suggested that temporal mechanics might be an area of specialty for her. She understood that the mechanics of time should not be tampered with, as even minor changes could have significant consequences, limiting opportunities for exploration. However, she acknowledged that her path could possibly change unexpectedly.

“Do you have any stories from the academy, Mika? Papaver?”

Mika viewed her time at the Academy as a structured education experience. She recognized the importance of the cross-departmental training required for all cadets. Although she did not excel in these areas, she understood that having basic knowledge in various fields could be crucial in life-or-death scenarios. There was one particular area where she struggled despite performing poorly in most cross-training subjects.

“I managed to be one of the few in my class to not save the ship during an engineering class exercise. Understanding the scientific aspects of warp cores is different from applying that knowledge in practice. Perhaps I couldn’t think like an engineer or felt out of my comfort zone. I wouldn’t recommend putting me near a warp core anytime soon. The instructor made sure I didn’t forget that experience.”

While this might not have been a typical revelation, Mika was not embarrassed by it. If she had wanted to pursue engineering, she would have focused on developing that skill. Moreover, her academy history was documented and accessible. Before she could ponder further, she was interrupted by a whistle and a spotlight on Captain Braggins.

Mika didn’t have specific expectations for the commissioning ceremony. Given the ship’s design, she wasn’t surprised that only the Yeager crew attended. This led her to question the necessity of the dress uniform requirement, unless there had been an expectation of external attendees.

It is possible that the Captain had anticipated someone would attend, in an effort to dispel the stigma of being perceived as the lowest of the low, despite her esteemed Medal of Honor. It would not be surprising if she felt disappointed by the lack of attendance, although she may still try to present the situation to her advantage. Alternatively, this interpretation could be an over-analysis, as individuals are inherently complex.

The small speech left Mika uncertain about her feelings. While she did not consider herself an outcast or orphan, she acknowledged a parallel to her current estrangement from her parents. She was gaining a new work family, though they were only shipmates for now. Mika believed that relationships would develop over time through shared service on the Yeager, but that trust needed to be earned.

“Not exactly what I was expecting. Feels like we dressed up nicely for no particular reason.”
