It didn't take more than a few minutes to reach the temporary office belonging to Doctor Robert Gadling. He was a tall man who never seemed to show his age, and as ever he sported a van-dyke beard.
“Mazikeen, my dear. How are you?” He asked raising from behind his desk and dismissing his Midshipman.
“Good. Considering.” Replied Maz.
“Yes. My condolences. Your Father is well I take it?” He moved toward the replicator. “Drink?”
“He's well.” She replied. “And, no thank you. I'm still on GMT”
Given the hour, Gadling ordered himself a scotch. The perk of rank he mused to himself.
“I see you're scheduled to head back to DS9 in a couple of hours.” He said taking his seat again.
“Yes. I booked onto a passenger liner. About an eight week cruise.”
“That's going to be rather dull for you isn't it?.”
“Took me eight weeks to get here. Two days at,” She paused. “Home. Then back out again.”
Gadling smiled. “How about, you cash in your boredom boat and come with me. I have a little side-quest you might be interested in taking part in. I just need an extremely competent pilot, and you'll be back with your Captain Braggins and your Yeager, in about five weeks. And having more fun to bot in the mean time.”
“You mean...”
“Yep, she's fully certified. All mine, and all paid for. So to speak. Just needs a little shake down, and I can't think of anyone I'd rather let fly her on her... Official, maiden flight.”
It was only then that Maz allowed her gaze to fall to the model of a twenty third century Larson class that sat on the desk. Last time she'd seen the actual ship, it had been a work in progress, being restored and updated to the latest specifications internally. Externally it was still the classic design.
Gadling had known it wouldn't take much for him to get Black aboard for this jaunt. As long as she was flying and not just sitting around, she would be in.
And what happened aboard Excalibur, is another story...
