The chief engineer shook Cassidy’s hand. The synthetic nerves in his metal arm transmitted the Gorn’s impressive strength, and his equally impressive restraint. Cassidy doubted that Jadaris could shatter his hand, but he could easily disable it, given the proper motivation. Cassidy hoped that he would never give the Jadaris a reason to try.
"Will you be replacing Dr. Beinn over there?" He pointed out the wolf-like officer that was putting away his medical tricorder and taking a seat in the back again. "Even if you aren't, I'm still happy to see someone partially mechanical joining the ship's crew. My half-brother from the family that helped raise me was a cyborg doctor as well, lost both of his eyes in an Academy accident; so if you need engineering's help, just let us know.”
Cassidy blinked. He’d come to work for Dr. Beinn, not to replace him. Then again, Starfleet reassignments tended to come in waves.
It was good to hear that Jadaris had some experience with cyborgs. Cassidy was used to maintaining his own implants, but there were a couple of servos in his back that he couldn’t quite reach.
A Vulcan woman joined the group and introduced herself with a bow. Cassidy returned the gesture, albeit somewhat clumsily. He hadn’t met many Vulcans who indulged in small talk.
The engineer, who was named Ian, let out a giggle as he introduced himself. Pax melted, helpless to stop the his cheeks from going red. He needed a distraction quickly. Luckily, the captain chose precisely that time to begin her speech.
The captain’s speech was rousing, though she seemed to have a chip on her shoulder. Or something to prove, at least. Cassidy didn’t mind, in fact he felt perfectly at home among Starfleet’s outcasts.
As the captain’s speech wound down, Cassidy regained his composure and resumed his conversation with Ian, Jadaris, and T’Lari.
“To answer your question, Jadaris, I’m certainly not planning to replace Beinn unless he leaves willingly. I’ve heard how Klingon promotions work, and I doubt that the San-Tarah are much more cordial in matters of career advancement.”
