Qi respected that Bowman could share a story about failing at something. Most recent graduates felt embarrassed of their shortcomings. They certainly didn’t brag about them openly.
She must be pretty confident in who she is. I wish I’d been like that fresh from the academy.
Before Papaver could share a story, the captain’s whistle sounded. It seemed that Braggins was quite happy to be an outcast among Starfleet’s ranks. Qi felt strangely comforted. He had always felt slightly self-conscious of his tendency to color outside the lines. Most people didn’t understand his interest in Romulan culture, or translating the languages of the Dominion. Lately, he’d begun to dabble in cryptography, which he doubted would do much to pad his resume. Perhaps the Yeager was truly the best place for him to use those skills.
“Not exactly what I was expecting. Feels like we dressed up nicely for no particular reason.” Mika said as the speech concluded. Qi nodded. He certainly hoped that the next party would be less formal, now that they knew not to expect too many VIP guests.
“Why don’t you take some time to introduce yourself to the crew? This is probably the nicest they’ll look for quite some time. If you’ll excuse me, I need to practice my San-Tarah.”
Qi approached Beinn, who was standing nearby, firing off a common greeting in the canid's native language. His pronunciation was decent enough, though the phrase was a bit too formal considering their friendship, and his posture was far too stiff. The latter point was likely due to the constrictive dress uniform.
“I am glad to share this meal with you, my friend,” he continued in San-Tarah, raising his wine glass.
“That’s as far as I’ve gotten,” he said, switching back to the standard language of the Federation. “I’ve learned a lot of languages, but this is by far one of the hardest. Did you grow up with it, or did you mostly speak Klingon at home?”
