“ ‘Chief’ ‘s okay.” Art said with a small nod. “d’Tor’an might be too long to say in cases of emergency, where seconds matter. In that case, ‘sir’ will do fine, too. ‘Ma’am’ is acceptable, but,” Art grinned, “just don’t call me a petaQ!”
Looking round as she finished the last quip, and apparently finding her intended target, the Captain of all people, d’Tor’an looked back at Leo with a look of hatred strewn across her face. No, hatred was too strong Leo considered and knowing better than to get involved in whatever their problem was, he didn’t question it.
“Yeah, she can have that effect on people.” The Lieutenant said rather coldly.
“I’m not sure what you mean but that’s none of my business and I’ll stick with Chief or Sir I think.” Leo replied with as neutral a tone as he could muster.
“Enjoy the party.” She said as she shrugged, before motioning to the rest of the crowd. “Duty rosters’ll be out soon.”
Probably pushing his luck, especially given the Chief’s aura of unwillingness to be here, he tried that luck anyway.
“majQa! nej jer Qu’ poH je boq Da qaH!” - Very good! Look forwards work and ally with her Sir! - He pushed out through gritted teeth trying to make the more guttural sounds that the Klingon language required.
Leo’s whole body froze as he decided whether or not speaking Klingon was the right choice but ultimately decided yes, It was a good choice, even if his new boss didn’t like it. He didn't intend to use it all the time, but a bit of practise couldn't hurt and his languages, however basic could prove useful one day. Barely a second had passed since the words had left his lips before he decided not to be her friend at this precise moment, but to at least offer some small semblance of help to her.
“If you don’t want to be here, I can cover and say you had to drag someone away. Maybe cause they couldn’t handle their drink?”
Leo felt at that moment, the conversation was essentially dead. Whether because d’Tor’an wanted to be elsewhere, or his choice of language, he didn’t know but he gave her a small chance to answer before turning to the Midshipman who had been standing to his left, waiting for a chance to jump into the conversation.
“Hiya, I’m Leo and you are… you’re… Sorry, I recognise you from the Academy but I can't remember your name?” He said rather calmly.
Fumble out the way, a chat with the new boss, talking to someone else. I can do this!
