Just over a week later, the USS Yeager arrived at their destination for First Contact. The ship and its crew were abuzz with the idea and practicality of Midshipman being specifically assigned, and Ian could just silently say he was glad he wasn’t one of them. He was inexperienced enough that he could also have been seen as needing the experience, but he was quite comfortable staying in Engineering.
Besides, the mission was a scientist’s dream, not an Engineer’s. Though Ian was an expert in medical and engineering feats, temporal mechanics was too confusing to be worth his time to figure it out. He was consulted several times on the creation and manipulation of a shuttle’s engines, but he had little interest in investigating what a temporal anomaly would do to his modifications.
At least all this scurrying around meant he got to be close to his Chief Engineer. To look at him, Jadaris was impressive; to speak to him was to be impressed. Ian was careful not to go near Sickbay - the last thing he needed was to embarrass himself again in front of the Chief Medical Officer. Not only was he entranced by his cybernetic implants, he wanted to inspect every inch of them.
It was that thought now that distracted the Ensign from his work, or rather, getting to work. He was about to be late for his shift, and thoughts invaded of the CMO. It was innocent to think of the older man’s right arm, but then the young Engineer thought of how far up those cybernetics went, if they invaded the chest, and how far down the body they went.
His throat was tight, his face was flush, and with his blood pressure starting to rise…
Ian walked right into the Chief Engineer.
