Word has gotten out that our first contact with the Wairara will take the form of a race. Almost everybody on the crew is talking about where they’ll be watching from and whether the Yeager’s team will win. It reminds me of the annual watercraft race on Lake Elgin in my hometown. We would sit close to the edge of the water, so the racers would splash us as they went by.
One person who doesn’t seem particularly excited is Mika. She’s clearly a brilliant scientist, but I was hoping that she would let herself have more fun with things. It’s possible that she’s just nervous, and maybe those nerves will wear off once she experiences the thrill of the race. I think I see myself in her a bit. Before I got my own lab, and before the symbiont, I used to keep my head down and do my job. I thought that my youth spent hacking holograms and sneaking into museums, would be looked down upon in Starfleet. Thankfully, it seems I’ve found a crew where those qualities are considered an asset.
