Cassidy turned around, back toward safety. The hardest part of emergency medicine was recognizing a lost cause. He emerged from the flames shortly behind d’Tor’an. Tears stung his organic eye.
“The other crewman was pinned under a bulkhead.” His throat was tight, causing his voice to come out in a strangled rasp. “I’m sorry, she’s too far gone already.”
He glanced down at the body that d’Tor’an had pulled from the debris. They were gone as well. Some part of him wanted to pound the wall and scream, he could feel the anguish rising in his chest, but his training was deeply ingrained. He would complete the triage and grieve later. The security chief and himself were the two crewmen with the most urgent medical need.
“These two have things under control, chief,” Cassidy said, glancing toward Alden and Beinn. “I think you and I are due in sickbay. The faster we treat these burns, the lower the risk of complications.” He shuddered to think of how Manx would react when she saw the two of them.
