The tone of the conversation took an explosive turn, one that was startling to the Bajoran/Trill hybrid, even if perhaps not surprising. Mara had a reputation for a reason, and while Hally had bore witness to a more gentle, intelligent, and perhaps even likable side to the amazonian security chief, the abrupt, aggressive turn of the conversation served to shore up her need to tread lightly around her.
So, to her credit, she sat quietly turning the exchange between Mara and Aeryn, doing her best to stay out of the line of fire, and leaving Miller to defend or respond as she certainly was able to do. Maybe this was some old beef? Maybe Aeryn and Mara had something going on the Sydesh had interfered with? Love had a way of being complicated at the best of times, and betrayal or jealousy could linger long, even after the issue was seemingly put to bed.
But honestly, Hallowette had no idea, and given she had been friends with Miller, oh...about an hour at this point she didn't feel she had any right to involve herself. She did, however, feel bad for her. Hells, she felt bad for Mara - whatever this was about had obviously been painful, or at least frustrating to her enough that she felt justified in addressing it in public. Of course, that could just be because Calleja just saw Hallowette as a significantly minor presence, a bug on the wall to bear witness to her fire then 'fuck' off - to use one of her own words, uniquely human as it was.
Hally had awkwardly lowered her eyes to the empty cup and remains of her dessert while the 'discussion' came to a close. It wasn't until Mara returned the conversation to the subject of language that Hally could be certain she was invited back into the circle.
"Oh..." Hally said, unsure how to really pick things back up while the emotional disarray still lingered at the table. She glanced at Aeryn, looking to make sure she was done responding before she quietly cleared her throat and looked back to Calleja, "Uhm, yeah, I'd love to talk more about language." Her fair cheeks reddened and she reached up to place an errant curl back behind her ear before continuing, "I...uhm...I was telling Commander Miller that sometimes I turn off my universal translator in order to hear the natural patterns of someone's speech. I have always been interested in hearing someone's natural voice, but it wasn't until I served in the youth Diplo Corp that I learned that it can actually help in negotiating or understanding the emotion that another being is attempting to impart. The UT is an amazing tool, but it's just that - a tool."
This is so troxing awkward. Maybe you should just go....
"Uhm, Lt. Calleja, err, Mara..." She felt the heat begin to rise again, and her husky voice broke as she said the large woman's name. "Your natural accent is very unique. I assume you aren't from Earth or one of it's primary colonies?"
