The Wairaran ship's Bridge seemed very well laid-out, which Jenny considered less of a surprise than she might have expected, given their traditions as pilots and engineers. There didn't seem to be any extraneous consoles, no "auxiliary" stations where people who ought not to be on the Bridge could "log in" and be part of the action. In many ways it was reminiscent of a Runabout cockpit or the flight deck of an old Earth airliner. The Wairara themselves also seemed to be on the functional side; little in the way of ostentation, just what they needed to survive and do their jobs well.
[We detect no serious damage to your vessel. You will follow us to the rally point and await instructions.]
Jenny's fingers gripped her armrests, nails digging into the material. The Yeager was trailing debris and they didn't think the damage was serious? As far as Jenny was concerned, any damage caused to her ship was serious; just because she could continue with her mission didn't alleviate that fact. Nor did it change the fact that it had changed her plan for the situation entirely; she was going to have to commit the entire ship now, rather than just a small team.
“You have to appreciate their sympathy.”
Situation being what it was, Qi's deadpan quip cut through the sudden silence like a knife, and Jenny wasn't able to suppress an amused snort as the corners of her lips tugged into something resembling a smile.
[d’Tor’an to Bridge. Two crewmen lost. One male, Engineering, one female… department unknown. Alden and Beinn are staying on scene. Cassidy and I are heading to Sickbay.]
Jenny swore under her breath; she'd held out hope that the two missing crewmen would be found alive, but D'Tor'an's report popped that particular bubble. The fact that the two missing crewmen weren't identified yet suggested the flames and heat had done enough damage to make that impossible visually. They would have to wait for genetic testing to confirm the identities, which would take time given their Chief Medical Officer was apparently returning to Sickbay without the bodies.
Unless...
"Peter, go down to Sickbay. I want you to collect statements from Cassidy and D'Tor'an. What they saw, what they did, everything. Arwen, ping every commbadge aboard. I want to know the owners of any device that does not register as active."
“Should I follow them, Captain?”
A stupid question. A stupid question from a stupid kid in a position he hadn't earned. Jenny shook herself, clamping down on that train of thought quickly, lest it find itself loose and spreading among the crew. Chertstone wasn't everyone's cup of tea, so to speak, but he knew what he was doing and was a decently competent pilot. Whether or not he would learn the dynamics of a starship's Bridge crew remained to be seen, but right now Jenny couldn't afford to be biting his head off. The Wairarans and Mister Tomer might appreciate her piloting the Yeager herself during the race, and it did appeal, but she had other duties.
"Lay in a pursuit course, I want to get nice and close. Let's see what they do if they think we're going to overtake them."
