Mara had managed to force back the anger that still bubbled through her veins. At some point the fury would need an outlet but until then, the COS felt she could keep her head.

[Givens here. Well, I have more good news to add to your uplifting tale. I've got a mysterious console on the bridge that seems to be of Dominion origin, possibly related to a security system as it involves identifying friend vs foe; I have a hard time thinking that's a coincidence all things considered nor would I consider it standard issue even for a slave ship. If we have an engineer or tech whiz to spare, this might be worth looking over as I don't want to stumble my way through this.]
The Bandaran shook her head slowly.
This just keeps gettin’ worse. Dominion? Fuck me.
She looked over at Ju.
“Han. You’re needed on the bridge. Cap’n Givens has a new challenge for ya. Ekat, go with her.”
So far the word Dominion had only been uttered on a closed channel between Crawford, Givens and Calleja, and Mara wasn’t ready to be the one to speak it to a wider audience just yet.
[Your new best friend and I will be coming aboard shortly. Tear that ship apart and someone tear that damn console apart. I want to know what Klingon smugglers + Dominion technology + slaves equals, preferably before it smacks us in the face.]
“I’ve sent Han to the bridge with an escort,” the Chief replied. “She’s got as good a chance as any of us of gettin’ an answer from that console. And Cap’n Crawford, I wouldn’t advise comin’ aboard, but I also know full well you’re gonna do it anyway. At least come over to the cargo bay so I can make sure you’ve got some back-up.”
There was a faint trace of amusement to Mara’s voice as she spoke. She had learned the hard way not to try to fight the inevitable. Around her the team started to spread out, and there was the odd crash and clatter of metal as the qoH’s cargo was turned upside down.
“Lieutenant.” It was Doyle. “Looks like they were mostly hauling Cardassians in here, and another species not so common that the tricorder knows.” The Midshipman offered the tricorder to the Chief who politely declined.
“I trust ya,” she said simply.
“I’ll get my scans back to the Artemis. The library database might have a better idea of who else they had in here. Most of the blood is older, but there are definitely some newer traces. Unfortunately there are so many different samples that it’s impossible to say how many people were held here.” Rubicon finished her report.
“Good plan and good work. Let’s see what Medical come back with,” Calleja replied with a nod. “Go join in the general destruction takin’ place. Give that row there a particularly good goin’ over,” she added, pointing at a set of barrels. “We went past those earlier and they were shrouded somehow. If anythin’ gives you cause for concern, either use the tricorder to translate the warnin’ labels or call me. I’m fluent in Klingon. Let’s face it, with my accent I’ve got a good headstart.”
Her heart wasn’t in the joke but she was making an effort to lift her mood as she reopened the channel between herself and the two Captains.
“Update. Blood traces are comin’ back as Cardassian and a race that’s not in the tricorder’s database. We’re checkin’ with Medical now.”
