The orders came in suddenly, less than one hour to report. The USS Zephyr would be departing by that time. When Amila received the urgent transfer notice she had a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. It was a nervous energy that she couldn’t pin down. First the order came from Commander Ameen for all Zephyr crew to report to Docking Port Seven. Was he being transferred to? Perhaps there was still a chance they could continue what they started. She had barely made it to the docking port when the next call came to report to the Bridge.
She found her way to the nearest turbolift and tried to shake the uneasiness. The doors were about to close when she saw Commander Keir 77 coming her way. Amila’s arm immediately went up to block the doors from closing. A friendly face. She let out a sigh of relief.
Amila smiled at her friend as Keir stepped into the turbolift. “Bridge.” Amila ordered, setting the turbolift in motion. She then looked at Keir.
“I’m really glad to see you.” Amila tried to not look concerned, as the lift ascended to the command center of their new assignment.
“It’s good to see a friendly face.” Keir replied, though there was something off about the Hermat's answer. Amila gave hir a questioning glance as she tried to read the chief engineer's mood.
Keir seemed to sense Amila was about to ask a question and spoke before she could say anything. “Bad timing.” Hir answer was short. Not that they had time to talk. The turbolift slowed to a halt before Amila could prod further.
Amila took a deep breath and steeled herself for whatever was ahead. It was time for her to bury whatever trepidations she was feeling; there was no room for it on the Bridge. Keir signaled for Ra’an to walk out first, As the doors opened Amila let out a slow and steady breath through her mouth. She held her head high and shoulders back as she stepped forward. The Bridge design wasn’t familiar, but it wasn’t strange. Commander Ameen, clearly the senior officer. Was he the Commanding Officer? Had this been what her gut had been trying to tell her?
Now to get the hard part out of the way.
Amila stepped forward toward the command center, keeping more than a professional distance from the Commander before she stopped to stand at attention. Though she looked in his general direction, she did not make direct eye contact, not quite trusting herself to not to betray something that had been shared between them not that long ago.
“Lieutenant Ra’an reporting for duty, Sir.” She spoke steadily and with seeming confidence, her voice betraying none of the nervous energy she was fighting against.
