Awkwardness turned to interest, then something more as Calleja engaged directly with Hallowette's inquiry about her accent, then went into detail that the hybrid linguist would later describe as 'delicious'.
The uncertainty in her teal eyes about if she should to be party to Mara's airing of grievances about Aeryn's partner dissolved into a subtle smile, then became much more as the amazonian began to speak in her native tongue; the raw sound of her pronunciations, the speed and dictation, as well as the words created or subbed in place of common UFP standard were music to the Bajoran/Trills ears.
Hallowette had to concentrate to understand some of her words, especially as the speed flowed some words into one another. She lost the meaning for a moment and then picked it back up, up, using her knowledge of the root 'english' to fill the gaps and replace it with context - but she had to admit that she likely would struggle if she was immersed in the language with no UT.
And she LOVED it.
Mara continued on, stating her mutual affection for linguistics, though her need for it occupationally differed from Hallowette's natural curiosity, it was little different in the end. Mara Calleja was a language geek too, and that small bit of like minded interest worked to chip away a tiny bit of the forbidding reputation the fearsome security chief carried.
Hally's posture improved as she reengaged, the errant curl she had placed behind her ear sneaking its way back to her forehead as she subtly bounced in her seat with glee, "reH tlhIngan Hol vIjatlhbe'!" (Klingon is such an interesting language!) she said, wrinkling her nose and furrowing her brow as she spoke the guttural words, "Cardassian is as well. My father is a diplomat on Cardassia so it was almost my primary language for a couple of years."
She glanced at Aeryn, her eyes searching her new friend quietly to ensure she felt involved in the conversation, and she moved to eyes to the third redhead at the table, ensuring that Lucy, while quiet for the last bit, was still involved as well.
She then moved her attention back to the much larger woman at the table and continued, "As for Collateral Damage..." she chuckled, "I've heard the rumors. When I got my assignment it seemed people were just as wary about the Artemis as they were excited for me." She laughed. "Just keeps things interesting if you ask me."
The freckled woman then bit her bottom lip, glancing at the table as she considered her next words, looking up at the table as she offered, "Uhm, if you are interested, I'd be happy to speak some Trill or Bajoran for you. I've been told I have a fairly unique accent - I could even teach a few words or phrases if you'd like." The gesture was obviously not made lightly, "You'd have to standby your UT's though, and I understand if that's not something you're comfortable with."
