Amila’s question was answered. She believed that had Ameen known he was taking this position beforehand that he would have told her. Surely he didn’t mean for her to find out like this. But this wasn’t the place, nor was there time for her to be upset. She reminded herself that it had only been one date. A date with impeccably bad timing. She was certain he would not want to continue what they had started while he was on the cusp of his own command. Still she was happy for him. She really was, but if she took time to think about that, then she might linger on her own disappointment. Instead, Amila focused on maintaining her strict posture and stern expression while she waited to be addressed.
“Lieutenant Ra’an,” Ameen’s voice cut through her racing thoughts and grounded her back on the Bridge. As he appointed her Chief Science Officer, her face showed no affect. A month ago she would have let the Bridge see her enthusiasm, but today she was concerned that even the slightest gesture might be misinterpreted later. Ameen remained unreadable as well. He was stiff with her, more formal than he was with Keir. Still, she found his presence calming, as she always had. She had come to trust his command implicitly, and hearing his smooth and steady voice on the Bridge was a reminder of this.
Amila remained at attention until Powl was ordered to the helm. She then hustled to her own station, saying nothing to the other officers on her way. The Zephyr was an older ship. The interface wasn’t exactly what she was used to, but she could recall working with them in her academy days. It would come back to her quickly enough.
She began looking through the ship’s features and the resources that would be available to her on the mission. “Let’s see what we have here,” she muttered under her breath. She then accessed her department's roster and nodded to herself. Another moment of relief. Lieutenant Keti had been transferred as well. She knew him to be dependable and an extremely motivated and capable officer.
Amila watched Keir leave the Bridge and she spent the next several minutes checking calibrations on sensor arrays, noting past service logs, and testing her access to the proper systems. Then she took a deep breath and checked them again. This was her first assignment with the responsibilities of the Chief Science Officer, and she wanted to be sure she had not missed anything. She turned in her seat to make a report.
Commander. Captain. Protocols say... Her eyes darted around the Bridge, it was busy with activity. This was already weird enough.
"Commander Ameen," she stated when she found an opportunity. She caught his eye for the first time since she'd stepped on the Bridge, her expression stoic and serious. "Science Department reporting in as ready, Sir." She gave Ameen a curt nod and turned quickly back to her station.
