The stars streaked by on the main viewscreen, a silent testament to their swift passage at Warp Nine. Keir 77’s quiet question, after hir light comment about the command chair’s ergonomics, hung in the air.
"Is there something on your mind Captain?"
Ameen registered the title.
Still feels foreign, that. Unearned, given the circumstances...
He offered Keir a small, almost rueful smile.
"Commander will do for now, Keir," he said gently but with a quiet firmness. "I believe one has to truly earn the other title."
I'm not there... not yet...
He then turned slightly in his command chair, his expression shifting back to a more serious, appraising look as he addressed hir question directly.
"But yes, Commander," he continued, his voice calm and measured, "there is indeed. This rapid change of command, the nature of our assignment to Trill, the... unorthodox way this crew was assembled. It presents a unique set of variables." He paused. "Primarily, my thoughts are on ensuring this ship and her crew reach Trill safely, swiftly and ready for whatever awaits us."
He nodded slightly towards Keir's seat.
"As for the FO seating, perhaps we can look into an upgrade or at least some better lumbar support when we have a moment. Comfort is conducive to efficiency, after all." A very faint, dry smile touched his lips. "Perhaps you could put in a word with the Chief Engineer about adjusting your station, eh? I hear s/he is quite resourceful."
A more private discussion is definitely needed to really unpack the broader operational situation with Keir, Ameen decided. The mission, the ship's status, urgent personnel assignments... and yes, his mind added with a familiar internal sigh, there's also that other delicate matter I need to discuss with hir as my First Officer...
"These matters, however, are best discussed more privately. My ready room, if you please, Commander Keir. Let's review our immediate priorities now that we're underway."
As Keir rose to join him, Ameen scanned the bridge. He needed to leave someone in command. His gaze settled on Lieutenant Amila Ra'an at the science station.
She's a Lieutenant, a department head now. I've served with her longer than anyone else on this bridge. Despite the... personal complexities, I know her capabilities. She's sharp, dedicated. I can trust her with the conn.
"Lieutenant Ra'an," Ameen called, his voice regaining its command inflection. Amila turned from her console. "You have the bridge. Maintain course and speed. Alert me immediately to any significant deviations or unexpected sensor readings. I want a close watch on engine performance and structural integrity field fluctuations for this initial leg of the journey. "
Warp Nine in a vessel this age with a green crew requires meticulous oversight. No room for any complacency...
With a final glance at the main viewscreen and a nod to Ra'an, Ameen gestured for Keir. "Commander." He then turned and headed for the door to his ready room, Keir following.
The bridge crew, now under Ra'an's temporary command, continued their duties, the low hum of the Zephyr at warp their constant companion.
