(This post was last modified: 05-17-2025, 06:30 AM by Amila Ra'an.)
Things were changing quickly. Amila was a Starfleet officer, she was trained to accept and adapt to change. And, if it had been just a new ship and a quick reassignment she could adapt. She would be adapted by now. Those things were expected. What had her on edge was the personal complication - her personal feelings about the Commander. And there wasn’t anyone she could talk to about it. Not any time soon at least.
Amila barely glanced up at her station as Keir returned to the Bridge, though her ears were perked. She strained to hear the conversation between Keir and Ameen as they sat next to one another at the command center.
“Something on your mind…”
"Best discussed more privately. My Ready Room…"
Bits and pieces of the interaction floated her way. It didn't help that her back was turned to them.
Then a much louder voice. "Lieutenant Ra'an." Amila was startled from her attempt at eavesdropping when Commander Ameen addressed her directly.
Amila turned sharply from her console. She stood as Ameen told her that he would be leaving the Bridge under her watch. As he finished speaking she nodded solemnly and acknowledged his orders before he and the first officer turned towards the Ready Room.
Once the initial shock of finding Ameen to be the Commanding Officer of this ship had worn off, it had become easier to act normally in front of the audience that were her crewmates. She was still cautious, her energy dampened. He couldn’t afford a misinterpreted smile. Or questions about why he put the newest Chief Science Officer in charge of the Bridge.
As the Ready Room doors closed behind Keir and Ameen, Amila took a look at the command chair where Ameen had been seated and finally afforded herself a small smile. She then looked up at the view screen and its display of distorted streaks of light.
Before she sat back down at her terminal, Amila turned to the tactical arch on her left where Gath and Powl were currently stationed.
“Wild day, huh?” She was sure that she was the only one feeling on edge, still finally saying something felt like breaking the ice.
