As Mara expressed interest in learning more about Trill, Hallowette felt the familiar warmth of connection begin to rise in the pit of her stomach, especially in the area directly under the bundle of nerves that made up the pouch within her abdomen. Hally had grown up on Trill, had been raised on her mother's culture, and while she hadn't always felt as if she completely belonged among the people there, she had to admit that her childhood had been far more good than bad. Simply being closer to her father didn't make her any more Bajoran than it did Trill.
Memories flooded back as she quickly thought of what phrases and words she felt would best introduce her companions to the culture of her youth - in doing so she he suddenly, and surprisingly, felt a sad yearning for her Mother's people. A feeling she hadn't felt in a long time.
"Oh..." She laughed through a grin that even she thought might have been too large. "I'm not sure I expected you to say yes!"
She sat herself up as best she could, glancing around the room while she composed her thoughts. "Ok, well I'll start with something simple. A few cultural phrases that have a deeper meaning, then we can talk about what it means beyond the words themselves."
As she waited for her new friends to disable their Universal Translators, she gave Robin a quick wave and smile, just to let her know she was getting along famously.
"So..." she said, placing her freckled hands on the table, "Shalora." She said the words easily and warmly. "Shalora." She switched back to Federation Standard, her natural accent almost akin in many aspects to french on Earth. "It means 'Hello'. But it means more than that. It means...'I see you'...and the context is...kind of...'In peace or respectfully met'."
She wrinkled her nose, looking between the two, her teal eyes searching to see how her lessons was being accepted.
"Uhm, goodbye is, 'Torilen', or 'Until the return'."
"Zhael orenhal." she paused letting the words settle in her mind, "It's a saying on Trill. It means, 'Life Remembers.' It's something that I might say to a close friend that I've shared a secret with, or who has given advice. The context is...uhm...the sacred is never truly forgotten."
Her face blushed a bit. "One I've always loved is, 'Lareth thae thalor...' - The stars remember us." She nodded, pausing as she took in a slow breath, "On Trill, as you might glean, memory, history and connection are deeply rooted in our culture. The Symbiotes have influenced us to a level that is almost spiritual - But not in a way that most other species are religious. Like...the Bajoran's faith in the Prophets....it's...different. For the Trill, our bonds with the Symbiotes is more tactile. We ALL know people who are joined. Heck, my Mom was a candidate for Joining. They aren't divine, but they do grant our people a sort of immortality." She thought quietly for a moment.
"Ehlira li zhena seloraen..." she said quietly, "The soul of the symbiote is eternal." She smiled in a coy cockeyed way, "It means, what we do echoes in eternity. Even those of us unjoined. At some point there is a symbiote that will know you, and when they move on, that memory of you does also. It's why we are so devastated when we lose one. It's not just a single life lost, it's hundreds. Thousands."
We...I've not thought of myself as a Trill in a long time.
