Ameen stepped out of his ready room, the door hissing shut behind him. The PADDs were done, the urgent matters addressed for now, and Petty Officer Jensen’s firm advice about getting some rest before they reached Trill echoed in his mind. His shift was, indeed, drawing to a close.
He walked onto the bridge of the Zephyr. The main lights were dimmer now, the familiar soft glow of a ship settled into its warp journey for what corresponded to a night cycle. He saw a few fresh faces at the peripheral stations, the next watch beginning to integrate with those from Alpha shift. The atmosphere was quieter, more subdued than the initial flurry of departure.
His eyes found Lieutenant Commander Keir 77, who was already back on the bridge, standing near one of the aft stations in conversation with Dr. O'Fee and a tall Caitian in a Starfleet uniform – undoubtedly the new medical midshipman, Emery Tyris-McEntyre.
Good, introductions are being made...
Ameen approached them, offering a welcoming nod to the midshipman first. "Midshipman Tyris-McEntyre, good to have you aboard the Zephyr," he said, his tone professional but not unfriendly. "I trust you're settling in. You'll find Doctor O’Fee to be an excellent Chief Medical Officer and a fine mentor, I'm sure." He gave a brief, respectful nod in Evie's direction.
He then turned to Keir, a slight, almost weary smile touching his lips. "Commander," he began, "I see you've met our newest addition to the medical team. I'm about to follow some rather strict advice and head off-duty to get a few hours of rest." He gave a subtle, wry glance. "Yeoman's orders, apparently. Petty Officer Jensen is quite persuasive about the importance of a well-rested CO. Please oversee the watch turnover to the oncoming Beta shift. Ensure they are fully briefed on our current status, course to Trill, and speed of Warp Nine. Alert me immediately to any significant developments."
He then addressed the other officers who had been instrumental since they boarded, including Keir.
"Lieutenant Ra'an, Lieutenant Gath, Ensign Powl, Lieutenant Krandall, and indeed yourself, – Commander Keir along with all personnel from this initial, rather demanding, duty shift: your efforts in getting us underway so efficiently are commendable. Once your respective reliefs for the oncoming watch are fully oriented and have formally taken their stations, and the bridge command has been properly transferred to the Beta shift OOD, you are all to ensure you get proper rest. You've more than earned it after today's rapid transition."
It feels strange to be stepping away so soon, Ameen thought, but the bridge is in capable hands with Keir overseeing the transition, and then the next watch. The entire Alpha team needs to be at their best for the long haul...
With a final nod to Keir, a brief one to Ra'an, and a general one to the bridge crew, Ameen prepared to leave the bridge, confident that the Zephyr was functioning well.
