As the glow of the transporter beam dissipated, the form of the ambassador appeared on the surgical bed. Various terminals sprung to life, showing readouts of the ambassador’s vitals. A cacophony of alarms sounded at once, shattering the peaceful atmosphere of sick bay. The medical team was able to determine the following facts immediately:

• The patient was a human male in his early thirties. He had a series of gold-colored bands implanted along either side of his skull, which appeared to be some sophisticated cybernetic medical device.
  
• The patient had an entry wound near the center of his back, caused by some type of short-burst plasma weapon. Burns could be identified near the entry wound. There was no corresponding exit wound on the other side.
  
• The patient suffered severe trauma to the heart, resulting in massive internal hemorrhaging. As a result, blood pressure and heart rate were both low.
  
• The patient was not responsive and appeared to be in shock. Brain activity was highly irregular.
