The abrupt cut-off from Ambassador Vel Junde left a sudden, tense silence on the bridge. One moment they were receiving mission parameters, the next – a black screen and an alarming, cryptic warning. Ameen exchanged a quick, concerned glance with Commander Keir 77, who had just reported all ship's systems ready.
"Well, that was... unexpected," Ameen said, his mind racing. "A delay? Read her dossier carefully? This just went from a VIP escort to something potentially much more complicated."
He turned to Petty Officer Molina at Operations. She had addressed him as 'Captain.' He noted it with a brief internal frown. The title still didn't sit right, felt unearned. He'd made his preference clear to Commander Keir, but correcting a Petty Officer in front of the bridge crew during a critical moment like this wasn't the priority. He'd let it slide... for now.
"Understood, Petty Officer," Ameen said calmly. "No need to re-establish contact just yet. Stand by."
"Thank you for the update, Lieutenant Ra'an." He looked to his Chief Science Officer. "Keep those sensors active. Let me know if anything changes in the system, however minor."
"Commander Keir, your report on ship readiness is noted, thank you." His attention returned to his First Officer. "It seems our 'simple escort' mission might have a few more layers than anticipated."
Highest regard, every request met, handle with care... and now a delay and an urgent warning. The Ambassador had mentioned a dossier on Kestir being sent. That was now priority one...
"Ops," Ameen said, his voice calm but firm, addressing Molina again, "did we receive that dossier transmission from Trill Control before communications were cut?"
Whatever is in that file, it clearly spooked the Ambassador. We need to see it immediately...
He tapped his armrest, a habit when processing new, unsettling information. The "forty hours to Trill" suddenly felt like the calm before a potential storm.
