Mara leant back and listened to the demonstration of the Trill language. She rolled the unfamiliar syllables around on her tongue after each sentence, doing a passable impression of Hallowette’s accent.
The CSO was first to answer.
"I enjoyed learning those Hallowette. I'd love to learn more and eventually become fluent in Trill," Aeryn confessed. "I find it all fascinating, especially when it comes to the symbiotes and the connection they have."
Before Mara could add anything, Robin returned, and she was bearing gifts.
"All right, ladies, I'm back. Sorry, had to deal with some medical stuff that was definitely not for public concern. I brought wings and tacos for everyone." She sat the tray down on the table along with some small paper plates and napkins. "Careful of those tacos on the end unless you're seriously into spice. They're over a million Scoville. I honestly don't even want to be in the same subsector as them."
“Y’know what, you can keep those,” Calleja replied with a laugh. “I don’t know how you still have eyebrows after havin’ them that close. I like spice. I don’t like needin’ a super-cooled toilet seat or where that dermal regenerator would have to go afterwards,” she teased.
The Amazonian woman helped herself to a wing, before turning back to Hallowette.
“Not sure what I was expectin’ from Trill, but I think that was probably it?” Mara said. “Like, the language and the way people phrase things says a lot about the race. Klingon, it’s very very direct. nuqneH! DaH jImej!”
She barked the syllables in an accent that could have come straight from the wrong side of Qo'noS, but the literal translations made her point for her. ‘What do you want’ as a greeting, and ‘I will leave’ as goodbye.
“Compare that with the Trill. Shalora. Torilen. And those phrases. Lareth thae thalor? Almost spiritual. Very reverential. Tracks with what little I do know about the society and how the rituals are all so tightly bound up in it,” Mara continued. “One day I’ll go visit. I’m not remotely spiritual or religious or any of the rest of it myself. But I appreciate those who are. You guys always give me plenty to think about. Sorry, I’m assumin’ you are. With Trill and Bajoran background, I figured it would have come up early and often?”
The Security Chief had realised mid-sentence she’d leapt to conclusions, and possibly the wrong ones, but as attempts to save face go it wasn’t entirely terrible.
