== NRC – Flint Chertstone – Tactical Officer ==
The closer they got to the comet, the more intense the vibrations had become from the gravitational resonance from the celestial body. The shear on a ship in full health would be immense on a good day. Yeager had a gaping hole in her lower hull. The SIF was working overtime and a second job to keep them in one piece.
Flint pushed the vessel even closer.
Behind him, he heard the Captain. "Steady on course... On my mark, roll us ninety degrees to port and adjust course to heading zero-zero-zero mark nine-zero."
Backseat pilots... He thought to himself as he concentrated.
They were approaching twenty thousand kilometres. One of the plasma intake vents was showing an amber light indicating it was considering becoming clogged. Deftly, Flint configured the intake's flow rate to belay what it could for those precious moments before they could breakaway from the comet and purge the vent later.
The shimming was becoming more evident the closer they got, and an audible rattling seemed o be coming from almost everywhere no on the bridge.
"Steady... “ Came the Captains voice again...
Ten thousand kilometres!
“Mark. Roll ninety degrees, bearing zero-zero-zero mark nine-zero."
Flint didn't reply as he tapped the control for the preprogrammed manoeuvrer, he held on. The gravitational forces of the comet pulling one way, while the gravitational plating on the deck pulled the other combined with the velocity of the ship as it in astronomical terms, hugged the surface of the comet made the hull scream even more as the inverted manoeuvrer left Yeager's damaged underside exposed to the outer universe as a whole.
On the viewscreen, mountain ranges of rock and ice sped past them in the sky as open space flowed below like the open sea.
The grin on Flint's face could not have been any wider.
