Lucy listened with interest and curiosity to Robin. Faith required a lot of trust. It was good to have a foundation in life. Everybody had a hard time knowing exactly who they were. The freedom to be yourself. Everyone had their own path and Lucy knew she had enough to concern herself with before considering others. She raised the little that remained of her glass of swirling cosmos to add to the toasts.
“To friends, nakama, and linguists.”
Lucy stared wistfully at her glass and uttered something that had been occupying her mind. It was hopefully still over Hally’s head. Lucy wasn’t a big one for leading others astray, unless they were already that way inclined.
“Would really like to find a cunning one to fall in love with, someday.”
Being teetotal had its merits. These mocktails were really good. She wished she’d learnt the value of moderation before college. Couldn’t change or truly overwrite the past, but you could learn, eventually. Robin had very sound reasons and that was something to appreciate. Context gave a lot of clarity.
The Sting had ruined Lucy on The Entertainer, but she could appreciate the nuances of a good piano player. Lucy hated her aptitude for being able to hold onto memories. It felt like somebody had used a permanent marker on the whiteboard of her mind. There were so many ones that hurt a lot and some of those blended with really good ones.
There was the family that you’re born into and then there’s the ones that you find yourself in. Getting to know your colleagues was totally a way to build better relationships. Lucy really appreciated the Senior Officers. There was a lot of social skills she could learn from them. In herself she knew she fitted into the horrible warning category.
