Jenny breathed a small and silent sigh of relief as they managed to circle the comet without smashing into it. For his first time manning the helm position in such a critical situation, Chertstone seemed to be doing a fairly decent job. Jenny made a mental note to revisit his crew performance evaluations, as attitude notwithstanding, he actually seemed to be a competent pilot. He wasn't in the same league as Jenny herself had been pre-promotion, but he was certainly on a par with Black.
Then everything went to hell. Again.
Shortly after moving past the flailing Wairara ship into second place, the Yeager's engines started to misfire. Rather, the controls themselves seemed to misfire, surging then cutting out in random patterns. The inertial compensators did their best, but the erratic attitude the Yeager's flight was now taking made it difficult to fully stabilise the crew. With the sensors and shields offline as well, they could neither see where they were going, or deflect anything they might run into.
“I’m going to try reversing the polarity of the shield emitters,” Qi was calling out reports from the back of the Bridge. “Hopefully this will push away whatever the comet is sending toward us.”
“I'm going to try to increase or distance from the comet.”
It was a smart move, to try and put as much distance between the ship and the comet as was possible, but Jenny didn't think the comet was the cause. If it had been, this would've happened on the run-in, not the run-out. No, this was why this section of the course was called, according to the translation showing on the screen 'Anomaly Row'. Every second they wasted trying to correct their course was another second losing ground to the Wairara, and possibly the Os'rusa; ship's pride and diplomatic obligations overrode safety in this instances.
"Cut the impulse drive, we'll coast out on momentum. Use visual sensors to navigate if we still have them, otherwise, we keep going straight on."
