Ameen had just finished giving his directives, and already his senior staff were reacting, adapting the plan. It was exactly what he needed to see. He first addressed his first officer, who had leaned in to ask a quiet, concerned question about the dinner seating.
Of course Keir is worried about that. C'had made a direct and unprofessional overture. I can't have my young FO feeling harassed...
"I'll handle the seating chart personally, Commander," Ameen reassured Keir quietly, giving a firm, understanding nod. "Regarding the dinner itself, you will not be required to attend. I need my First Officer on the bridge, commanding this ship, while I... assess our guest. You can have the conn for the duration of the event if you wish. Your concern is noted."
Before he could say more, Lieutenant Ra'an approached from her station, her enthusiasm a welcome change from the tension of the last hour. He listened to her suggestions about the menu and briefing.
Well dang it... I can listen to her talk for hours... Ahem... but this is very good point in any case...
"Yes. An excellent idea, Lieutenant," Ameen said, a genuine smile touching his lips. "A full buffet is much more versatile, and your idea to make the briefing more energetic is sound. You have a green light to proceed with your plans. Get to it."
It seemed, for a moment, like they were getting a handle on things, building a new plan. Then, the comm system chirped, a priority message from Sickbay. Doctor O'Fee's voice was clear and urgent.
[Sickbay to Commander Ameen, it is imperative that the new Host checks in Sickbay, the risk of rejection in a new host is high and there is only a small window of time to avoid anything serious.]
Ameen's expression went from cautiously optimistic to deadly serious in an instant.
Rejection risk. Small window of time. That was it. That was the "urgent medical procedure" the Ambassador had mentioned and the reason for his panic. Kestir isn't just eccentric; he could be medically unstable...
He immediately opened a channel back to Sickbay. "Acknowledged, Doctor. He will be enroute to you shortly."
Closing the channel, he then tapped his combadge.
"Ameen to Lieutenant Gath. I know you just got our guest settled," he said, his voice clipped and all business, "but plans have changed. Doctor O'Fee has identified a critical and time-sensitive medical concern. You are to escort Mediator Kestir from his quarters to Sickbay immediately. Use your discretion, but this is a priority one task. Acknowledge."
He then addressed the bridge at large, his voice leaving no room for doubt. "Mediator Kestir is being escorted from his quarters to Sickbay for an urgent medical evaluation at Doctor O'Fee's request. All departments are to prioritize any requests from Medical until further notice." He paused, then looked to his senior staff. "Commander Keir, Lieutenant Ra'an, we will proceed with preparations for the dinner on the assumption Doctor O'Fee can stabilize the situation. Continue with your planning."
The quiet part of their journey had lasted all of five minutes.
