Keir was used to being in Engineering or at least working on parts of the ship, but here s/he was on the bridge managing reports from the departments and monitoring the ship's progress towards the mission objective, which by their nature were important responsibilities, but very little hands-on interaction required of hir.
It wasn't that s/he couldn't do this job; multitasking was a prerequisite for a Chief Engineer and realized in this instance that it was not that there was too much being asked of hir, in fact quite the contrary.
The responsibilities were greater but in many ways less demanding of hir mentally, which did make Keir wonder how COs managed to keep their focus on the tasks during shifts where they were simply travelling towards a destination or patrolling quiet sectors.
This was going to be something s/he needed to learn.
Noting the time Keir realized it was time for a check in on how the dinner party preparations were going; The team in the mess hall were likely quite busy with every detail and Keir normally would simply leave them to it, but s/he knew that if the Captain asked s/he needed to have something for him.
"Keir to Lieutenant Ra'an. How goes the preparations; anything needed or missing? Just checking in"
