== NRC Lt Shavokh, Vulcan Surgeon ==

It had been agreed that while the patient was on external life support, they would use the time to make him stable and replace the heart with a synthetic one that would allow him to try and recover with less stress on his body. It was well documented that such a device was much akin to having a life support unit installed inside the body and with less for the body to struggle with, it would focus more of the metabolism on healing other injuries. External support seemed to function less in sync than an internal system, though it wasn't entirely clear why those statistics seemed to prevail.

Lt Shavokh was impressed that they were able to have the scan data for the most current model of synthetic heart for humans that was approved for Star Fleet use. She had seen previous iterations and although they had been impressive, this one had subtle improvements that made her feel even more confident in the chances for the surgery to be a success. Nothing was ever certain, but every small advantage in the favor of the patient was another reason to increase hope. The implantation went smoothly and efficiently. Shavokh's attention to detail and precision was typically Vulcan, her focus being as sharp as the instruments being used in her hands.

As they were about to bring it online, Cindy held up a hand. She then indicated that because the other cybernetic implants were still trying to establish control, it would be best to simply allow them to do so. The heart was designed to respond to bothe neurological impulses and those of synaptic implants. The patient might have a better chance of recovery if it didn't have to fight for control of an already beating unit. This would allow it to automatically synchronize. Cindy suspected that the implants were trying hard to stabilize a heart that refused to respond because it had been destroyed. She speculated that the patterns she was detecting were likely from the systems still attempting to do what they were designed to do, as it could detect the other life signs still functioning in the patient.

After a moment of consideration, the surgical team agreed that it would be the best thing to try. If it didn't work, they could always fall back to the external life support system again and try it another way. On Shavokh's signal, they switched off the bypass and allowed a few seconds to see if the patient's new heart would begin to beat on it's own. It was a tense moment as they all waited to see if their patient would survive. He would not regain consciousness, but if all went well, the vitals would begin to improve on their own. Most of the rest of the repair work had been relatively simple. It had only been the heart that had been completely destroyed.

Without realizing it, both Shavokh and Cindy were holding their breath as they waited to see if it had worked or not.

== GM Input please. I guess it is time for the moment of truth... ==
