In a stereotypical example of Vulcan logic, Torok failed to understand Amila's rejection of his list. He was quite sure he had double checked his algorithm to ensure that it was precise.
“Wait, you wrote an algorithm that can put a percentage on how people react to a playlist?”
Her tone was that of incredulity. "Certainly, with the vast database of selection present, there was a need to find the most suitable matches quickly."
She took the PADD to look at the list. “That’s not…” Amila’s brow furrowed, then she changed her tone, and nodded encouragingly, “I mean, I love where your head is at. This is a great start, but you can’t put an algorithm on a good time. It’s just something you feel, you know. When it comes to playlists, it should be something that makes you want to sing along, or even dance.”
Torok was taken aback by the question. He surmised that his ability or experience in music and festivities should not be an indication of whether the algorithm was faulty.
"Lieute....Amila. I am afraid I sincerely don't understand. How do you FEEL like you want to sing along or dance. This sensation is alien to me."
She handed the PADD back, and he immediately began check the readouts from his station that were forwarded to his PADD. All seems normal so far.
“What exactly is a ‘positive response’ in your world - your algorithm anyway? Just curious, have you ever sung along or danced to a song?”
Torok was once again stunned by the question. In fact I have not. There was always more time needed for more critical tasks. Exploring music and song has always been a lower priority.
"Let me answer in proper order. Positive response is measurable result that can be observed on a patient scan when listening to the selected musical arrangement. The areas of happiness or pleasure will be active during a positive response. To the latter question...no."
